Concrete structures often present volumetrical changes particularly due to thermal and moisture related shrinkages. Volumetric instability is detrimental to the performance and durability of concrete structures because structural elements are usually restrained. These restrained shrinkages develope tensile stresses which often results in cracking in combination with the low fracture resistance of concrete. Early-age defects in high-performance concrete due to thermal and autogenous deformation shorten the life cycle of concrete structures. Thus, it is necessary to examine the behavior .of early-age concrete at the stages of design and construction. The purpose of this study was to propose a shrinkage models of VES-LMC (very-early strength latex-modified concrete) at early-age considering thermal deformation and autogenous shrinkage.
The main purpose of this study is to evaluate early age thermal stresses and to estimate the risk of thermal cracking in the footings of Hyungsan bridge. In this study, stress analyses are performed for several construction stages using the computation of temperature distributions. The stress analysis results show that, not using the embedded pipe cooling, placing the concrete at once for each footings may cause sever thermal cracking. So, the structures should be constructed with one horizontal construction joint. Then the height of each lifts were determined to be 1.50 meters. Using various time intervals between lifts, temperature and stress.
Abutments in Kumdang bridge are massive concrete structures of which total height is l0m, length is 30m, and width is 7m. Therefore, there is every probability that early age thermal cracking such as hydration heat occur. We measure heat of hydration, strains of rebar, and stresses of concrete abutment during construction. Using analysis of measuring data, we examine thermal stresses, and make use of results as method which control thermal cracking. Finally, we develope thermal stress analysis program which have pre/post processor to be easy of accessing and the usefulness of that is estimated through comparison of results.
Development of high-strength concrete and improved durability has brought new opportunities to the construction industry. However, some attention was given to characteristics of such concrete, in particular with respect to their cracking sensitivity. It has been argued and demonstrated experimentally that a low water/cement ratio concrete undergoes shrinkage due to self-desiccation. This so-called autogenous shrinkage cracking is a major concern for concrete durability. One possible method to reduce cracking due to autogenous shrinkage is the addition of expansive additive. Tests conducted by many researches have shown the beneficial effects of addition of expansive for reducing the risk of shrinkage-introduced cracking. This paper aimed at forecasting deformation of high strength cement paste with expansive additive for early age.
In massive hardening concrete structures, early age thermal cracking due to the heat of hydration may occur. There are many massive structures in Incheon bridge project and they have to be carefully treated to prevent thermal cracking. In this paper, an example of analyzed and measured results of hydration heat of pile caps in the Incheon bridge project was represented. Finite element simulations were carried out before casting and curing method was determined using the analyzed result. Sensors were installed before casting and temperature and strain of concrete was measured during curing. Gathered data were compared with the analyzed data and selected control method to prevent cracking was verified. Analyzed result gave good agreement and very few cracking could be found.

Thermal cracks are cracks that commonly form at early ages in mass concrete. During the concrete pouring process, the elastic modulus changes continuously. This requires the time domain to be divided into several steps in order to solve for the temperature, stress, and displacement of the concrete. Numerical simulations of thermal crack propagation in concrete are more difficult at early ages. To solve this problem, this study divides crack propagation in concrete at early ages into two cases: the case in which cracks do not propagate but the elastic modulus of the concrete changes and the case in which cracks propagate at a certain time. This paper provides computational models for these two cases by integrating the characteristics of the extended finite element algorithm, compiles the corresponding computational programs, and verifies the accuracy of the proposed model using numerical comparisons. The model presented in this paper has the advantages of high computational accuracy and stable results in resolving thermal cracking and its propagation in concrete at early ages.
This study investigated the applicability of insulation curing method with double layer bubble sheets to the man concrete subjected to cold weather. Temperature history of the mass concrete indicated that the highest temperature of center section was exhibited at $34^{\circ}C$ while the that of surface section was $25^{\circ}C$. Difference between center and surface was shown to be less $10^{\circ}C$ when the temperature of center section was peak section, and thereby associated temperature cracking index was calculated 1.5, and occurrence probability of temperature cracking was 5%, so there was no temperature cracking caused by internal restraint. No temperature crack was observed by naked eye. It was clear that early frost demage and temperature cracking could be restrained due to reducing temperature difference between inner part and outside in the case double bubble sheets applied to insulation curing method in cold weather. The maturity of mass concrete is higher than outside about $72\sim89^{\circ}$ DD, so it was demonstrated to prevent early frost demage and ensure strength excellently. Insulation curing method with double bubble sheets was more economic than heating curing method.
