Effect of Early Ankle Exercise with Functional Electrical Stimulation on Strength and Range of Motion of Ankle in Patients with Stroke (기능적 전기자극을 이용한 조기 발목재활운동이 급성기 뇌졸중 환자의 발목 근력과 가동범위에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of early ankle exercise with functional electrical stimulation(FES) on spasticity, strength and active range of motion of ankle in patients with stroke. Methods: This study included 21 patients with stroke, who were performed early ankle exercise combined FES. The exercise program comprised 5 sessions of 30 minutes per week for 4 weeks. The spasticity, strength and active range of motion of ankle were evaluated before and after training. The spasticity was measured by modified ashworth scale(MAS), strength of ankle was measured by hand-held dynamometer and active range of motion of ankle dorsi-flexion was measured by goniometer. All data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. Results: Significant differences were observed the subjects for strength of ankle and active range of motion. The results of the study were as follow: strength of ankle was significantly increased subjects(p<.001) and active range of motion was significantly increased subjects(p<.001). Conclusion: Ankle is very important part of body in stroke patients. early ankle exercise with FES is effective for improvement of strength of ankle and active range of motion in patients with stroke. ealry ankle exercise with FES about stroke patient is very useful and effective. It is effective in clinical practice.

Effects of Chronic Electrical Stimulation on Functional Recovery Following Laryngeal Reinnervation in the Rat (흰쥐에서 반회후두신경 손상 후 만성적 전기자극이 후두 기능 회복에 미치는 영향)

  • Background and Objectives : Until now, various attempts have been made fir reinnervating paralyzed vocal cord. Nevertheless, the most cases did not produce satisfactory outcome due to occurrence of synkinesis of larynx secondary to misdirected axonal regeneration. Accordingly, the purpose of this investigation is to learn the effect of chronic electrical stimulation on regeneration of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Material and Methods : Using 20 healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats(250-300g) with normal vocal functions, transections were made on their left recurrent laryngeal nerves and then primary anastomosis were performed under the operating microscope and they were divided into an experimental group and a control group each having 10 rats. After the procedure, for the experimental group, chronic electrical stimulation was carried out until vocal cord movement was functionally recovered. for the control group, only chronic electrical stimulation was not given. Result : In experimental group, the number of functionally recovered rats was two and in control group, that of functionally recovered rate was same. The reorganization of posterior cricoarytenoid muscle motoneuron in nucleus ambiguus appeared in the case of directed reinnervation of recurrent laryngeal nerve. Conclusion : The chronic electrical stimulation does not a direct beneficial effect on the early functional recovery in rats with injured recurrent laryngeal nerve.

  • The use of electrical stimulation in the red meat processing has been inconsistent and the mechanism(s) associated with the improvement of meat quality in electrically stimulated carcass has been disputed. This may reflect an incomplete knowledge of how to optimise the technology and also mirrors the existence of unknown factors. Although it is well established that the stimulation treatment increases the rate of post-mortem glycolysis, other biochemical and biophysical effects have been implicated with the use of this technology. The classical view that stimulation prevents muscle from shortening excessively during rigor development has been expanded to include the possibility that it also results in physical disruption of muscle structure and early 'turn-on' of tenderizing process. However, the interaction of these effects with the acceleration of the rate of proteolysis through activation of the calpain pretense system has not been comprehensively unravelled. This mini-review attempts to examine the current theories about the effect of stimulation on post-mortem muscle.

An Analysis of Research on the Sensory Stimulation in Newborn Infants in Korea (신생아 감각자극에 관한 국내 연구 논문 분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of study was : 1) to analyse the trend of research on the sensory stimulation in newborn in Korea, 2) to suggest direction for further study on the sensory stimulation in newborn and contributing to the use of intervention in newborn. Method: Research studies on the sensory stimulation in newborn were selected from the dissertations, parents-child health. Academic Society Journal, and from Korean Journal of Pediatrcs which were conducted between 1984 and 2002. The total numbers of the studies were 15. These studies were analyzed for 1) time of publication or presentation 2) thesis for a degree or nondegree 3) characteristics of subjects 4) sample size 5) research design 6) type of sensory stimualtion 7) meaurement tool 8) result. Result : 1)The most year of studies were the 1996's~ 2000's. 2) The degree of studies were higher than nondegree. 3) The most characteristics of subjects were the premature infants. 4) The most frequent sample sizes were 11-20. 5) The all research design was nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design in quasi experimental basis. 6) The most type of sensory stimulation was Field massage(tactile and kinesthetic). 7) The measurement tool used all objective tools. 8) The most research data were collected by the measure of the weight, heart rate, behavior state, respiration, stress hormon and positive results. Conclusion: 1) Human sensory stimulation did not seem to harm the infants. 2) several positive effects of sensory stimulation that have been reported previously must be reevaluated. 3) further research will be required large sample size, long-term outcome, individualized stimulation program, early parent-infant contact in order to enhance the development of attachment, to determine the underlying mechanism and theorical frame for these stimulation effect.

  • The effect of alpha1-adrenergic stimulation on cardiac automaticity changes during myocardial development. To illustrate, in isolated tissues from the mature canine heart, alpha1-adrenergic stimulation usually induces a decrease in automatic rate. On the other hand, many early neonatal fibers exhibit an increase in automatic rate In response to alpha1-agonists, which is not seen in the adult.

Validity of the Korean Early Childhood Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (3-6세 유아를 위한 가정환경자극 척도(EC-HOME)의 타당화 연구)

  • Participants in this study to develop the Korean version of the Early Childhood Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment(EC-HOME) were 294 3- to 6- year-old children enrolled in a child care center and their parents. Results were that EC-HOME had sufficient internal reliability : Cronbach's α=.80. Correlation of test-retest ranged from .76~.97. In item-analysis, 9 items with low 'corrected item-total correlation' were removed resulting in 30 items. Factor analysis confirmed 6 factors : 1) Learning Material, 2) Learning Stimulation, 3) Responsivity, 4) Physical Environment, 5) Language Stimulation, and 6) Variety of Materials. Analysis of the relation of children's home environment to their characteristic variances with parents and developmental functioning showed high internal consistency and convergent validity of the sub-scales.

  • The overheated education of preschool child has been an social issue lately. The purposes of this study are to identify housewives' benefits sought of preschool child education commodity. Specific research question are as follows : (1) What are the benefits sought of preschool child education commodity? (2) What are the sub-dimensions of that? For this study, interview data were collected through F.G.I.(Focus Group Interview) of 5 housewives and in-depth interviews of 2 housewives. The interview helped to understand housewives' realities of their preschool child education. For later empirical analysis, the data for 400 full-time housewives with preschool child living in Seoul were also collected. The result of one-way ANOVA showed that the sub-dimensions of benefits sought of preschool child education commodity are composed of 'conformity', 'early stimulation', and 'preparation for school'.

Relationship between nutritional status, psychosocial stimulation, and cognitive development in preschool children in Indonesia

  • The purposes of the study were to analyze nutritional status, psychosocial stimulation, and factors affecting the cognitive development of preschool-age children. This study was conducted in the Village of Babakan, Sub-District of Dramaga, Bogor Regency, West Java. This cross-sectionally designed study was conducted with mothers who had preschool children aged 3-5 years as respondents. Fifty-eight children were included. The distribution of mother's educational level was quite diverse, and the largest percentage (44.8%) had senior high school education. Approximately 78% of the family income per capita was classified into the non-poor category and 22.4% into the poor category. The average mother's nutritional knowledge score was 76.7±2.5 (moderate category). Most of the preschool children (84.4%) had psychosocial stimulation scores in the moderate category (30-45). The nutritional status of children showed that 15.5% were underweight, 5.2% were wasted, 3.4% were severely wasted, and 19% of the children were in the short and very short categories (stunted). The stepwise regression results showed that psychosocial stimulation (P < 0.001), participation in early childhood education (P = 0.002) and nutritional status based on the height index for age (P = 0.028) had a positive and significant effect on cognitive development of the preschool children (adjusted R2, 0.434; P = 0.028).
