Effects of Early Feed Restriction on Growth, Fat Accumulation and Meat Composition in Unsexed Broiler Chickens

  • The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of early feed restriction on growth, fat accumulation and meat composition in unsexed broiler chickens. Five hundred 7-day old unsexed broiler chickens were distributed into ten treatment groups with 5 pens of 10 broilers each group. One group was fed ad libitum as the control group and other nine groups were fed 25% ad libitum for 3, 6 or 9 days, 50% ad libitum for 3, 6 or 9 days, and 75% ad libitum for 3, 6 or 9 days, respectively. Thereafter, they were fed ad libitum to 56 days of age. The present results showed that broilers showed compensatory growth when they were restrict-refed. Feed conversion ratio was significantly lower in broilers fed 25% ad libitum for 9 days (p<0.05). Triglyceride concentration of serum was significantly lower in restricted unsexed broilers (p <0.01), whereas cholesterol concentration was not significantly different. Abdominal fat was significantly lower in broilers fed 25% ad libitum for 9 days, 50% ad libitum for 3 days and 75% ad libitum for 6 or 9 days (p<0.05). Moisture and protein contents of meats were not significantly affected. Ash content of meat was significantly higher in restricted broilers. Fat content of meat was lower in broilers fed 25% ad libitum for 9 days, 75% ad libitum for 3 to 9 days. In conclusion, broilers showed compensatory growth when they were restrict-refed at an early age. In order to achieve the success of early feed restriction (namely reduce fat accumulation and improve feed conversion ratio with comparable body weight at market age), unsexed broilers should be fed at level of 25 ad libi=tum for 9 days starting at 7 days of age.

  • 작물 초기생육에 대한 저선량 방사선의 효과를 보고자 벼, 콩, 들깨 종자에 저선량 $^{\gamma}$선을 조사하여 발아율과 초기 생육을 관찰하였다. 저선량 $^{\gamma}$선에 의한 작물의 생육초기 효과는 한정되었으나 작물과 생육특성에 따라 적정 선량은 다르게 나타났다. 벼종자의 발아율은 2Gy조사구에서, 유묘초장과 생체중은 0.5Gy에서 가장 높았으며,대두종자의 발아율과 유모생육은 4Gy에서 가장 양호하였다. 들깨종자의 저선량 $^{\gamma}$선 조사에 의해 생육이 다소 불량하였으나 발아율은 2Gy에서, 유묘초장과 생체중은 1Gy에서 증가효과를 나타내었다.

The Plasma Level of Insulin-like Growth Factor-I (IGF-I) in Relation to Mammary Circulation and Milk Yield in Two Different Types of Crossbred Holstein Cattle

  • The objective of the present study was to determine the plasma level of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in relation to mammary blood flow and milk yield including biological variables of relevance to milk synthesis in two different types of crossbred Holstein cattle at 3 different stages of lactation. Eight heifers were 87.5% HF and eight 50% HF animals were selected for the experiments. The three stages of lactation tested were: early lactation (30 days postpartum), mid-lactation (120 days postpartum) and late lactation (210 days postpartum). Animals in each group were fed a concentrate and rice straw treated with 5% urea as the source of roughage throughout the experiments. In early lactation, mammary blood flow and milk yield of 87.5% HF animals were significantly higher than those of 50% HF animals. In mid- and late lactation, both mammary blood flow and milk yield showed a proportional decrease from the early lactating period of 87.5% HF animals. The trends for persistency were observed in 50% HF animals as for udder blood flow and milk yield throughout the experimental periods. The plasma glucose level of the 50% HF animals was significantly higher than those of 87.5% HF animals in both early and mid-lactation. The concentrations of arterial plasma free fatty acids ($C_{16}\;to\;C_{18}$) were higher in 50% HF animals as compared with 87.5% HF animals in all periods of study. In early lactation, the concentration of plasma growth hormone (GH) of 87.5% HF animals was higher than those of the 50% HF animals, thereafter the mean level of plasma growth hormone declined in both mid- and late lactation. The concentration of plasma IGF-I of 50% HF animals was significantly higher than those of 87.5% HF animals in all stages of lactation. There were no differences among stages of lactation for the levels of plasma IGF-I, insulin and growth hormone in 50% HF animals. In 87.5% HF animals, the plasma levels of both IGF-I and insulin were lower in early lactating period while it showed an increase during mid- and late lactation. The present results indicated that the regulatory role for the higher mammary blood flow and milk yield during lactation in 87.5% HF are not mediated via the higher level of circulating IGF-I. Differences in mammary blood flow and milk yield between 50% HF and 87.5% HF animals are in part due to a higher concentration of circulating growth hormone. The lower level of circulating growth hormone in 50% HF animals would be regulated by higher levels of IGF-I, free fatty acid and glucose in plasma.

RUMEN DEGRADABILITY OF ITALIAN RYEGRASS (Lolium multiflorum, L) HARVESTED AT THREE DIFFERENT GROWTH STAGES IN SHEEP

  • This experiment was carried out in order to evaluate the chemical composition and rumen degradation characteristics of Italian ryegrass harvested at three different growth stages, i,e. pre-blooming, early-blooming and late-blooming. Degradation values were obtained by incubation of the samples using the nylon bag technique on the rumen of sheep fed a normal diet (Timothy hay with 200 g/d concentrate per head) for 12, 24, 36, 48 and 72 hours, respectively. Neutral detergent fiver (NDF) content was highest at late-blooming (64.4%) while no difference was found among the pre-blooming and early-blooming (49.4% vs 48.3%). However, acid detergent fiber (ADF) content markedly increased from 30.0% at pre-blooming to 35.4% and 46.4% at early-blooming and late-blooming, respectively. Lignin and silica contents also increased as advancing maturity of the grass, Rumen degradation of dry matter (DM) significantly reduced (p < 0.05) as advancing maturity of the grass. Ruman degradation cellulose and ADF at pre-blooming were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those of early-blooming and late-blooming. However, no significant differences were observed among the early-blooming and late-blooming. With advancing maturity, rumen degradation of NDF and hemicellulose significantly reduced (p < 0.05) at the incubation times.

DISCRIMINATION OF EARLY MATURING PADDY RICE CROPS USING MULTI-TEMPORAL SAR IMAGES

  • This study was begun to classify the paddy fields by the rice varieties and to monitor the temporal change in rice growth using SAR backscatter coefficients $({\sigma}^{circ})$. For nine fine-beam mode images of Radarsat-1 SAR, a growing period time-series of backscatter coefficients was set up from April to October in 2005, and was compared with the field-measured rice growth parameters such as LAI (leaf area index), plant height, fresh and dry biomass, and water content in grain and plant for 45 parcels in Dangjin-gun, Chungcheongnam Province, South Korea. The average backscatter coefficients for early-maturing rice varieties (13 parcels) were ranged from -18.17dB to -6.06dB and were lower than for medium-late maturing rice varieties during most of the growing season. At around the heading stage (July 30) for early-maturing rice, both rice crops showed the highest backscatter coefficient values and the difference was the greatest before harvesting early-maturing rice. The temporal difference in backscatter coefficients between rice varieties was expected to play a key role to identify early-maturing rice fields. On the other hand, comparison with field-measured rice growth parameters showed that the backscatter coefficients decreased or stayed on the plateau after heading stage even though the growth of rice canopy advanced.

숙기별 사일리지용 옥수수의 생육 및 수량변화 (Variation of Growth and Yield of Silage Corn According to Maturity)

  • This study was carried out at Crop Experiment Station in 1993 and 1994. The objective of this study was finding out variation of growth and yield of corn according to maturity. Hybrids of corn used in this study were early maturing corn Comet80, Elite90, Royaldent IOOT, Royaldent T$\times$llO, P3525, P3394, medium maturing corn Royaldent 120T. and late maturing corn Jungbuok, P3144W. G4743. Stalk height, leaf number, ear weight, stover weight, and TDN yield of early maturing corn were linearly increased with prolonged maturity in 1993 growing season. Leaf number, and stover weight of early and late maturing corn were linearly increased with prolonged maturity in 1994 growing season. But ear weight of late manuring corn was not increased as much as that of early manuring corn with prolonged maturity. Increase of total DM and TDN yield of late maturing corn was due to stover weight increase compared with ear weight increase of early maturing corn. Leaf number and stover weight were highly correlated with silk (Growing Degree Days) GDD.

지역별 잣나무 차대검정림의 초기생장에 미치는 미기후의 영향 (Effects of Local Climatic Conditions on the Early Growth in Progeny Test Stands of Korean White Pine)

  • 본 연구는 경기도 가평, 광주, 그리고 충청북도 영동에 식재된 잣나무 차대검정림을 대상으로 미기후가 잣나무 초기생장에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위하여 수행하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 지역별ㆍ임령별로 평균 흉고직경, 평균 수고, ha당 흉고단면적, ha당 재적 등의 임분통계량을 측정ㆍ요약하였으며, 이에 근거하여 10년 생부터 20년 생까지 10년 간의 초기생장에 대한 임분변수별 연년생장량을 파악하였다. 환경요인으로서 각 차대검정림의 지역별 미기후 조건이 생장에 미치는 영향을 분석하기 위해 지형기후학적 방법과 공간통계 기법을 사용하였다. 이상과 같이 얻어진 연도별 기후 추정치에 근거하여 임목생장에 영향을 미치는 30개의 기후지수를 각 차대검정림별로 추정하였다. 최종적으로 이들 30개의 기후지수와 각 임분변수별 연년생장량 간의 상관분석 및 회귀분석을 통하여 국지기후가 잣나무 생장에 미치는 영향을 파악하였다. 지역별 잣나무의 초기생장은 경기도 가평과 광주의 순서로 우수하였으며, 충청북도 영동은 매우 저조한 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 지역별 생장특성은 각 연구 대상지의 미기후와 밀접한 관련을 가지고 있는데, 기온이 낮고 높은 습도를 유지하는 지역이 잣나무 생장에 적합한 것으로 분석되었다. 특히 상관분석과 임분 변수별 생장을 추정하기 위해 도출된 최적 회귀식에 채택된 기후지수를 보면 잣나무의 초기 생장에 결정적인 영향을 미치는 미기후 조건은 낮은 기온인 것으로 판명되었다.

Response of Feeding Amino Acids Supplemented Cottonseed Meal on Growth Performance and Digestibility of Early Weaned Cow Calves

  • This study was designed to examine the response of feeding early weaning diets without and with amino acids supplemented cottonseed meal on growth performance and digestibility of early weaned cow calves. Fifteen 14-21 days old cross bred cow calves were randomly allotted to three experimental diets. Diet A comprised of milk replacer and concentrate feed whereas two isocaloric and iso-nitrogenous early weaning diets viz., B and C were prepared without and with lysine and methionine supplemented cottonseed meal, respectively. These early weaning diets were used as substitute of milk replacer for calves. Calves were placed in individual cages and fed twice daily for a period of 60 days. Daily feed intake, feed refused and weekly weight gain was recorded. Two digestibility trials I and II were performed at 5th and 9th week of the experiment, respectively. During the digestibility trial I, calves were fed on ad libitum basis whereas in trial II, calves were fed at 90% of their voluntary DMI. Feed, orts and feces samples were collected, weighed daily, composited, subsampled and analysed for DM and CP. Results indicated that weight gain of calves was (p<0.05) higher on diets A (0.63 kg/d/calf) and C (0.64 kg/d/calf) compared to calves on diet B (0.57 kg/d/calf). Significantly (p<0.05) less daily DMI was observed on diet A (1.48 kg) compared to early weaning diets B (1.70 kg) and C (1.72 kg). The feed efficiency was (p<0.05) better on diet A (2.33) compared to diets B (2.95) and C (2.65). The economic efficiency was noticed to be better on diets B and C compared to diet A. In trial I, digestibility of DM and CP of diet A was (p<0.05) higher than diets B and C. Whereas in trial II, digestibility of DM and CP of diet A was (p<0.05) less than diets B and C. It was concluded that early weaning diet based on lysine and methionine supplemented cottonseed meal produced better weight gain and feed efficiency compared to non-supplemented cottonseed meal based diet.

  • This study empirically examined the relationships between the growth stage of ventures and their business characteristics such as KSFs, environmental attributes, CEO roles, and utilization of external resources, based on data from 2,515 Korean ventures. ANOVA results of this study revealed that 1) Key success factors appeared different across the different growth stage of Korean ventures. Financial resources were most critical in the early stage of growth, while the foreign technology licensing appeared to be most important for the success of ventures at later growth stage; 2) As the Korean ventures grew, their environments became more dynamic and hostile; 3) Strategic and external activity roles of top management were critical in younger ventures, while roles for marketing and production were important in older ventures; and 4) Utilization of external resources were more frequent at the later stage of ventures than at the early stage of growth. Based on the research, this study offered several managerial, theoretical, and policy implications.

분산분석법을 이용한 AZ31 합금의 피로균열성장에 미치는 시편두께 효과 평가 (Evaluating the Effect of Specimen Thickness on Fatigue Crack Growth in AZ31 Alloy Using ANOVA)

  • This study aims to assess the effects of specimen thickness (ST) on fatigue crack growth in the early stages of crack propagation and near failure in magnesium alloys. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) method was adopted because fatigue crack propagation in magnesium alloys exhibits statistical behavior. The equality of variance test and residual diagnostics were performed on the grown cracks to confirm the validity of ANOVA by verifying the normal distribution and mutual independence of the residuals and their homoscedasticity. ANOVA confirmed that ST heavily impacts crack growth; i.e., when ST is smaller, cracks grow faster in the early crack propagation stage and break more quickly before the formation of larger cracks. We found that ST significantly affects fatigue crack growth in the early crack propagation stage and near the failure stage in magnesium alloys. The regression model was also used to predict crack formation near the failure stage.
