Importance of Backscattering Effects in Ballistic Quantum Transport in Mesoscopic Ring Structures

  • We have found that in the ballistic electron transport in a ring structure, the junction-backscattering contribution is critical for all the major features of the Aharonov-Bohm-type interference patterns. In particular, by considering the backscattering effect, we present new and clear interpretation about the physical origin of the secondary minima in the electrostatic Aharonov-Bohm effect and that of the h/2e oscillations when both the electric and magnetic potentials are present. We have devised a convenient scheme of expanding the conductance by the junction backscattering amplitude, which enables us to determine most important electron paths among infinitely many paths and to gain insight about their contributions to the interference patterns. Based on the scheme, we have identified various interesting interference phenomena in the ballistic ring structure and found that the backscattering effect plays a critical role in all of them.

Pathogenic effects of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus isolates in swine tracheal ring culture

  • Pathogenic effects of 29 different porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome(PRRS) virus isolates were investigated in swine tracheal ring(STR) cultures by examining their effects on the ciliary activity of STR. Inhibition of ciliary movement and destruction of the tracheal epithelium were seen between 72 and 96 hours postinoculation(PI). Virus replication was demonstrated by examining viral infectivity of the supernatants from the STR cultures. PRRS virus antigen in macrophages was detected by a streptavidin-biotin complex(ABC) immunoperoxidase method. Of the 29 PRRS virus isolates, 8 isolates were classified into pathogenic, and the remaining 21 isolates were determined as mildly pathogenic or apathogenic viruses. These results suggest that STR examination may be used as a method for predicting pathogenic variability of PRRS virus isolates.

  • The frictional behaviors of Cermets/Cr-Ceramics and Cu-Al coatings of piston ring were investigated. Friction tests were carried out by pin-on-disk test and materials properties of coating layer were analyzed by nano indentation tester. Higher friction coefficient was obtained at harder coating with rougher surface. In case of hard-coating, the scratch depth, width and pile-up height had close relationship with indentation hardness. So the scratch width, depth and pile-up height increases with decreasing friction coefficient. But in case of soft-coating, the friction coefficients are strongly dependent on the morphological characteristics after nano scratching more than indentation hardness.

  • The acid-promoted cleavage of the E-and Z-isomers of 1-phenyl-6-neopentyl-1,3,4-trimethyl-1-silacyclohe x-3-ene(II) under various conditions gave clean and nearly quantitative formation of the ring-opened 2,3,7,7-tetramethyl-5-(X)silyl-1-octene products (X=OMe, Cl, OH). The possible mechanism for the formation of the ring-opened products was suggested that the initial protonation of II at C-4 would give a carbocation oriented so that they are ${\beta}$ to the silicon atom, and the subsequent nucleophilic attack at silicon would give rise to the observed products (VI, VII, VIII).

Uterine Cervix Metastasized from Signet Ring Cell Adenocarcinoma - 1 Case Report - (자궁경부에 전이된 반지세포암종 - 1례 보고-)

  • This study is a report about a specific patient whose primary stomach adenocarcinoma metastasized to uterine cervix adenocarcinoma. A thirty-nine year old female patient was initially diagnosed as having metastatic adenocarcinoma in the supraclavicular lymph node. Upon further examination, she was diagnosed with stomach adenocarcinoma. 8 months later, a cervix punch biopsy was performed. The stains used for examination were H&E stain, PAS stain, Alcian blue stain, Mucicarmine stain, Papanicolaou's (Pap.) stain, and as immunohistochemical stains, cytokeratin 7 and 20 were done. In the H&E stain, the tumor cells showed prominent and eccentric nuclei, thin nuclear membrane in abundant mucous cytoplasm, and cylinder shape. In the PAS stain, intracytoplasmic mucin vacuoles were stained with pink, and in Alcian blue and Mucicarmine stains, intracytoplasmic mucin vacuoles were stained with blue and red. As in the above results, she was diagnosed with undifferentiated adenocarcinoma. As found on the cytologic smear preparation of the uterine cervix stained by Papanicolaou's stains, the background was relatively clear, the number of malignant cells was relatively low, and large and eccentric nuclei in abundant cytoplasm were observed. Upon observing the tissue preparation of the uterine cervix biopsy by H&E stain, a clear background, large and eccentric nuclei, and a signet ring cell types were observed, and the number of malignant cells were fewer than in the primary uterine cervix adenocarcinoma. The vacuoles in cytoplasm were observed. The nuclear membrane and chromatin were thick and very rough, and upon observation by cytokeratin 7 and 20 of immunohistochemical stain, the tumor cells indicated a positive rate of 70% and 20%, respectively. According to these results, also she was diagnosed with metastasized uterine cervix adenocarcinoma. In summary of the results of pathologic findings on stomach biopsy and cytologic, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical finding on uterine cervix biopsy, the adenocarcinoma of her uterine cervix could assert the adenocarcinoma of signet ring cell type that was metastasized from the primary undifferentiated adenocarcinoma in stomach.

Base-Catalyzed Rearrangement of Some 1,3-Oxathiolane Sulfoxides: Mechanistic Viewpoint of the Sigmatropic and Elimination Reactions

  • Rearrangements of 1,3-oxathiolane sulfoxides 8 and 9 in the presence of base are described from a mechanistic viewpoint of sigmatropic and elimination reactions. In the presence of triethylamine the (Z)-sulfoxide 8 gave the corresponding thiolsulfinate 10 by way of dimerization of the sulfenic acid intermediate 2 at room temperature while the (E)-sulfoxide 9 was recovered even after refluxing in ethyl acetate by the reversal of the [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement of the sulfenic acid 4. Triethylamine promoted the developing charge separation in the transition state of the sigmatropic rearrangement of the (Z)-sulfoxide 8 to facilitate the ring opening to the sulfenic acid 2. The reason for more facile ring opening of the (Z)-sulfoxide 8 in comparison with the corresponding (E)-sulfoxide 9 is attributable to the differences in the reactivity of the hydrogen adjacent to the carbonyl group. Triethylamine was not strong base to deprotonate the carbonyl-activated methylene hydrogen of the (E)-sulfoxide 9 but enough to catalyze the sigmatropic process of the sulfoxides. The sulfenic acid 2 dimerized to the thiolsulfinate 10 while the sulfenic acid 4 proceeded the sigmatropic ring closure. In the presence of strong base such as potassium hydroxide, the elimination reaction was predominant over the sigmatropic rearrangement. In this reaction condition, both sulfoxides 8a and 9a gave a mixture of the disulfide 12, the isomeric disulfide 14, and the sulfinic acid 13. Under the strong alkaline condition an elimination of activated hydrogen from the carbon adjacent to the carbonyl group to furnish the sulfenic acid 2a and the isomeric sulfenic acid 18. The formation of the transient intermediate in the reaction was proven by isolation of the isomeric disulfide 14. The reactive entity was regarded as the sulfenic acid rather than sulfenate anion under these reaction conditions.

  • Let R be a commutative ring with identity and M a unital R-module. We give a new generalization of exact sequences called e-exact sequences. A sequence $0{\rightarrow}A{\longrightarrow[20]^f}B{\longrightarrow[20]^g}C{\rightarrow}0$ is said to be e-exact if f is monic, Imf ≤e Kerg and Img ≤e C. We modify many famous theorems including exact sequences to one includes e-exact sequences like 3 × 3 lemma, four and five lemmas. Next, we prove that for torsion-free module M, the contravariant functor Hom(-, M) is left e-exact and the covariant functor M ⊗ - is right e-exact. Finally, we define e-projective module and characterize it. We show that the direct sum of R-modules is e-projective module if and only if each summand is e-projective.

GROUP GRADED TYPES OF BÉZOUT MODULES

  • In this paper, we introduce two group graded types of $B{\acute{e}}zout$ modules, namely graded-$B{\acute{e}}zout$ modules and weakly graded-$B{\acute{e}}zout$ modules, which are two $B{\acute{e}}zout$ versions in Graded Module Theory. We investigate the relationship among the three types of $B{\acute{e}}zout$ modules, the ordinary $B{\acute{e}}zout$ modules and the two graded types of $B{\acute{e}}zout$ modules. Also, we study the structure of these new $B{\acute{e}}zout$ modules along with different properties; for instance, "A graded-$B{\acute{e}}zout$ R-module, with R being a Noetherian ring, is Noetherien iff it is gr-Noetherian".

Two Approaches to Introducing Abstract Algebra to Undergraduate Students (추상대수학 강좌의 두 가지 접근 방법)

  • There can be two different approaches to introducing Abstract Algebra to undergraduate students: One is to introduce group concept prior to ring concept, and the other is to do the other way around. Although the former is almost conventional, it is worth while to take the latter into consideration in the viewpoint that students are already familiar to rings of integers and polynomials. In this paper, we investigated 16 most commonly used Abstract Algebra undergraduate textbooks and found that 5 of them introduce ring theory prior to group theory while the rest do the other way around. In addition, we interviewed several undergraduate students who already have taken an Abstract Algebra course to look into which approach they prefer. Then we compare pros and cons of two approaches on the basis of the results of the interview and the historico-genetic principle of teaching and learning in Abstract Algebra and suggest that it certainly be one of alternatives to introduce ring theory before group theory in its standpoint.
