A bark comprises about 10 to 20 percents of a typical log by volume, and is generally considered as an unwanted residue rather than a potentially valuable resources. As the world has been confronted with decreasing forest resources, natural resources pressure dictate that a bark should be a raw material instead of a waste. The utilization of the largely wasted bark of genus Pinus, Quercus and Populus grown in korea can be enhanced by Knowing its chemical Properties. Specially, uses of bark in mulching, growing media and soil amendment can be enhanced by knowing pH and C.E.C values. In this paper, an investigative study is carried out on the pH-and C.E.C-values. The results may be summarized as follows: 1. Bark is acid in nature, and pH values of bark varying from 3.3 to 4.7, is lower than that of wood.pH value of Pinus is the lowest. 2. Cation exchange capacity of bark is greater than that of wood, silt loam soil, and wheat straw.CEC of bark is 45.7 meq/100gm in Pinus, 41.8 meq/100gm in populus, 37.8 meq/100gm in Quercus.
Jinhae Bay is a typical aquaculture farm with active fisheries. However, it has been contaminated by the development of a major city and industrial area, and has therefore diminished in value as a fishing ground. To preserve the continuing productivity of the ocean, we have to estimate fisheries resources. To analyze the fisheries resources in Jinhae Bay, we evaluated the Fisheries Productivity Index (FPI). The FPI is composed of the Total production ($T_p$), Total amount ($T_a$), and Production of edible protein ($E_p$), nitrogen ($N_p$) and phosphorous ($P_p$). To calculate the FPI, we used Annual statistics on cooperative sales of fishery products data from 1979 to 2004 and the Food composition table. The results of the FPI were as follows. $T_p$ ranged from 70,235 tons to 113,556 tons and $T_a$ ranged from 107,004 million won to 373,776 million won. $E_p$ ranged from 8,124 tons to 13,357 tons, $N_p$ ranged from 1,965 tons to 3,273 tons, and $P_p$ ranged from 168 tons to 276 tons. According to the FPI, maximum fisheries productivity occurred in 1994, when $T_a$, $E_p$, $N_p$ and $P_p$ were at their highest values.
Several clones obtained from Serratia marcescens stimulated E. coli TP2139 (${\Delta}lac, \;{\Delta} crp$) cells to use maltose as a carbon source. The crp gene clone, pCKB12, was confirmed to stimulate the $\beta$-galactosidase activity, by Southern hybridization [31]. The nucleotide sequence of the crp region consisting of 1,979 bp was determined. The sequencing of the fragment led to the identification of two open reading frames: One of these, the crp gene, encoded 210 amino acid and the other encoded a truncated protein. The S. marcescens and E. coli crp genes showed a higher degree of divergence in their nucleotide sequence with 120 changes, however, the corresponding amino acid sequences showed only two amino acid differences. Yet, an analysis of the amino acid divergence revealed that the catabolite gene activator protein, the crp gene product, was the most conserved protein observed so far. Using a crp-lac protein fusion, it was demonstrated that S. marcescens CRP could repress its own expression, probably via a mechanism similar to that previously described for the E. coli crp gene.

In this paper, dynamic stress, strain and deflection analysis of concrete pipes conveying nanoparticles-water under the seismic load are studied. The pipe is buried in the soil which is modeled by spring and damper elements. The Navier-Stokes equation is used for obtaining the force induced by the fluid and the mixture rule is utilized for considering the effect of nanoparticles. Based on refined two variables shear deformation theory of shells, the pipe is simulated and the equations of motion are derived based on energy method. The Galerkin and Newmark methods are utilized for calculating the dynamic stress, strain and deflection of the concrete pipe. The influences of internal fluid, nanoparticles volume percent, soil medium and damping of it as well as length to diameter ratio of the pipe are shown on the dynamic stress, strain and displacement of the pipe. The results show that with enhancing the nanoparticles volume percent, the dynamic stress, strain and deflection decrease.
The purpose of this study is to examine the preparation of medical institutions for medical tourism and its effects. The sample of this study were 99 case which were selected from Korea Health Industry Development Institute list. Data were collected through the mail questionnaire survey from Sept. 15 to Oct. 30 in 2010. The collected data were analyzed using Chisquare test, t-test. The main findings of study are as follows: Using Chisquare test, we found statistically significant differences in resources prepared for medical tourism between hospitals and clinics. In general, hospitals were well prepared in human resources(e.g., proportion of employees with foreign language capability) and physical resources(e.g., helpdesk, brochures) compared to clinics.

Taxonomic notes on the genus Elaphropoda Lieftinck, 1966 (Hymenoptera: Apidae) from Vietnam are presented. Two species of the genus are reported: Elaphropoda percarinata (Cockerell, 1930) was first recorded from Vietnam based on specimens collected from Ha Tinh province in 1998, and is reconfirmed with a specimens collected from Bac Kan province in the Northeastern part of the country in this study, and Elaphropoda khasiana (Schulz, 1906) is recorded from Vietnam for the first time. Redescriptions of the male of E. percarinata and the female of E. khasiana are given with illustrations.
The family Ciidae, commonly known as minute tree-fungus beetles, encompasses approximately 640 species distributed among 43 genera, classified into two subfamilies(Ciinae and Sphidociinae). In South Korea, total 13 species in five genera are known: Cis boleti(Scopoli), C. hieroglyphicus Reitter, C. jezoensis Nobuchi, C. mikagensis Nobuchi & Wada, C. sasajii Kawanabe, C. seriatopilosus Motschulsky, Ennearthron chujoi Nakane & Nobuchi, E. ishiharai Miyatake, E. robusticorne Kawanabe, Neoennearthron bicarinatum Miyatake, Octotemnus japonicus Miyatake, O. laminifrons (Motschulsky), and Xylographus scheerpeltzi Nobuchi. In this study, two Ciidae species, Cis japonicus Nobuchi, 1955 and Orthocis nigrosplendidus(Nobuchi, 1955), are reported for the first time in the Korean Peninsula. Diagnoses of two species, habitus photographs of adult and male genitalia are provided.
Reproductive effort and spawning frequency of the two palaemonid prawns, Exopalaemon modestus and Palaemon gravieri, were investigated. In both embryos of the two species, egg size was larger in E. modestus than in P. gravien but for a given size, number of eggs (EN) was fewer in E. modestus. The statistical results revealed that there were significant differences in egg size and EN between the two species. E. modestus living in freshwater environments had larger and fewer offspring than P. gravieri inhabiting marine environments. These findings are consistent with predictions from r- and K-selections models. Reproductive effort (RE) also was higher in E. modestus, suggesting the possibility for E. modestus to invest larger amount of energy per individual offspring. In the two prawns the ovarian dry weight of females with eyed eggs was significantly higher than those with non-eyed eggs. This indicates that the ovarian maturation occurs during the period between the two embryonic stages, suggesting females being potentially of continuous breeding within a single reproductive period. In the both species brood loss did not occur during the incubation period.
This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant activities and protective effects on PC12 cells of the extract of Epimedium koreanum and its main constituents icariin and icariside I. After screening the seven identified flavonoid glycosides from E. koreanum through DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazyl-hydrate) assay, E. koreanum, Icariin and Icariside I exhibited significant effect on radical scavenging activity. E. koreanum, icariin and icariside I were examined using DPPH, ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) and FRAP (ferric reducing ability power) assay. In all antioxidant assays, E. koreanum, icariin and icariside I showed high radical scavenging activities in a dose-dependent manner. Protective effects against $H_2O_2-induced$ PC12 cells were assessed with MTT assay. The results indicated that cell viability and protection on PC12 cells of icariside I and icariin increased dose dependently. These study results suggest that E. koreanum, icariin and icariside showed high antioxidant capacities and cell protective effects. Icariside I, one of the metabolites of icariin, may be a new and effective flavonoid compound as a functional component.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of mugwort extracts on the blood ethanol concentration and liver function in rats. Sprague-Dawley rats were used, the rats administered with 25% ethanol (5g/kg$.$B.W.) were devided into three groups (CON-E ; 25% ethanol administered to the CON-E) according to the administered ethanol concentration and the levels of administered mugwonts. Mugwont roots extracts were administered via the caudal vein. Ethanol concentration was measured at the time of 0, 1, 2 and 3hr by gas chromatography. GOT(Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase) and GPT(Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase) were measured at the time of 0 and 5hr. Components of each extracts were analyzed by using high performance liquid chromatography. Cell number, GOT and GPT were investigated by using rat hepatocyte culture. Megwort extracts were added at the levels of 1% or 2%. Hepatocyte culture were into five groups according to the addition levels. The results were summarized as follows ; 1. Catechin contents of 8∼10mg/100g and the contents of (-)-epigallocatechin was high in the water extracts. 2. Ethanol degradation efficiency declines in the following order : MDW-E>MOH-E>CON-E. 3. The numbers of rat hepatocytes declines in the following order : 2% MDW-L>1%MDW-L>1%MOH-L>CON-L>2%MOH-L. These results suggest that crude catechin of mugwort extracts may play important roles to degrade ethanol and recover liver function in rats.
