1. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find out the distributional characteristics of dyspepsia according to Sasang Constitution. 2. Methods: The medical records of 108 subjects who have received prescriptions and diagnosis of Sasang constitution from June 2007 to April 2009 at a Korean Medical clinic in Seoul were reviewed. General factors and the frequency of the prescriptions according to Sasang constitution are compared and analyzed. 3. Results: Among the 108 subjects, 57(52.78%) persons were Soyangin, 27(25.00%) Taeumin, and 24(22.22%) Soeumin. The frequencies of the prescriptions of interior and exterior disease were compared. Exterior disease(89.47%) was higher than interior disease in Soyangin and interior disease was higher than exterior disease in Taeumin(88.89%) and Soeumin(91.67%). (p-value<0.001) The most common disease was Mangeum-syndrome(73.68%) of exterior disease in Soyangin, Dry-febrile symptom(88.89%) of interior disease in Taeumin and Taeum-syndrome(66.66%) of interior disease in Soeumin. 4. Conclusion: There were significant differences on the distribution of dyspepsia in interior or exterior disease according to Sasang Constitution.
Objective: The aim of this study was to introduce gastric dysmotility as a common cause in patients with concurrent functional dyspepsia and chronic atrophic gastritis. Method: Dyspeptic symptoms, the Rydoraku score, gastric motility (electrogastrography, bowel sound analysis), gastric mucosa (gastroendoscopy), and blood and blood chemistry were all evaluated. For the treatment method, Pyengwi-san (solution) and Banwhasashim-tang (extract) were used as herbal drugs. Both ST36 electrical stimulation and simple immersion stimulation of CV11, 12, and 13 in the abdomen were applied. Results: Dyspeptic symptoms including indigestion, headache, and insomnia were all relieved. Gastric myoelectrical activity and gastric pyloric function were additionally improved. The condition of the gastric mucosa was changed from atrophic to erosive. Other side-effects of the treatment were not noted. Conclusion: The traditional Korean treatment showed effectiveness in the relief of dyspeptic symptoms and mucosal improvement of chronic atrophic gastritis. Gastric dysmotility is a common cause of the condition being concurrent with both functional dyspepsia and chronic atrophic gastritis without Helicobacter pylori infection.
Objectives: This study examines the effect of Sagunja-tang on functional dyspepsia (FD) through a systematic review and meta-analysis of a randomized controlled trial (RCT). Methods: A search for RCTs that tested the effect of Sagunja-tang on functional dyspepsia was conducted in Medline, Embase, PubMed, CENTRAL, CiNii, CNKI, NDSL, RISS, OASIS, and KISS databases on November 8, 2020, with no limit on the year of publication. A meta-analysis was performed by synthesizing the findings, including total efficiency, clinical symptom score, myosin light-chain kinase (MLCK) level (pg/mL, and gastric half-emptying time (min). RevMan 5.4.1 software was used for data analysis. The quality of the literature was evaluated using Cochrane's risk of bias (RoB) tool. Results: A total of 14 RCTs met the selection criteria. As a result of the meta-analysis, the treatment group had higher total efficacy and MLCK levels (gastric antrum, jejunum) than the control group, and the clinical symptom score and gastric half-emptying time were lower. However, due to the low quality of the included RCT and the small sample size, the results may be slightly biased.
Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a chronic and recurrent upper gastrointestinal symptom that has no organic cause. A 49-year-old male patient positive for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) visited the clinic because of FD and constipation. He received complex Korean medicine treatment, including acupuncture and herbal medicines, from April 14 to July 18, 2022 (27 times) in the outpatient department. Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), Nepean Dyspepsia Index (NDI), FD-related quality of life (FD-QoL), Euro QoL visual analog scale (EQ-VAS), and Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) were used as evaluation tools in this study. Symptoms were relieved after 3 months of treatment, and his QoL improved (GSRS, 15-3; NDI, 110-21; FD-QoL, 52-20 [eating status, 10-3; liveliness status, 12-8; psychological, 1-0; role-functioning status, 18-9]; EQ-VAS, 40-65; NRS, 8-4). The results revealed that complex Korean medicine treatment could alleviate FD and constipation in patients with HIV.
Functional dyspepsia refers to upper abdominal pain or discomfort with or without symptoms of early satiety, nausea, or vomiting with no definable organic cause. In this study, we recognized that dyspepsia was decreased with herbal medication (Banhabakchulchunma-tang) and acupuncture therapy. And we aimed to evaluate the Gastrointestinal Symptoms Rating Scale (GSRS) in these cases. The GSRS indicated that Oriental medicine treatment could be effective in the Functional dyspepsia. And it is helpful in decreasing symptoms of patients and in improving quality of life.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlation between Stomach Qi Deficiency and gastric emptying as measured by abdominal ultrasonography in postprandial distress syndrome (PDS), a subgroup of functional dyspepsia (FD). Methods: Ten patients who met the Rome III diagnostic criteria for PDS and ten healthy controls participated in this study Gastric emptying shown as the half-life of gastric volume ($T_{1/2}$) was measured by abdominal ultrasonography. The degree of Stomach Qi Deficiency was assessed using the scale for Stomach Qi Deficiency pattern (SSQD). In addition, functional dyspepsia-related quality of life (FD-QoL), Nepean dyspepsia index-Korean version (NDI-K), and visual analogue scale (VAS) of distention and fullness were conducted on all subjects. Results: The scores of SSQD, FD-QoL, NDI-K, and VAS of distention and fullness in the patient group were significantly higher than those in the control group (p<0.05). $T_{1/2}$ was also higher in the patient group than in the control group. The SSQD score significantly correlated positively with $T_{1/2}$ in the patient group (r=0.640, p=0.046). However, there was no significant correlation between $T_{1/2}$ and other questionnaire scores in the patient group. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the gastric emptying measured by abdominal ultrasonography could be a quantitative indicator to diagnose Stomach Qi Deficiency in FD patients, especially the PDS subtype.
Objectives: According to Korean Medicine theory, the skin color of LU10 serves as a diagnostic clue to dyspeptic symptoms. The aims of this study were (1) to find the difference of skin color in LU10 region between functional dyspepsia (FD) and healthy control (HC) and (2) to examine the relationship between LU10 skin color parameters and dyspeptic symptoms. Methods: 39 participants (29 FD and 10 HC) have participated in this study. They were asked to complete gastrointestinal scale (GIS), gastrointestinal symptom rating scale (GSRS), Nepean dyspepsia index (NDI), functional dyspepsia-related quality of life (FD-QoL), visual analogue scale (VAS) for dyspeptic symptoms, food retention questionnaire (FRQ) and cold heat questionnaire (CHQ). $L^*$ (luminance), $a^*$ (red-green balance) and $b^*$ (yellow-blue balance) values of LU10 region were calculated through digital images of the participant's hand. Then we evaluated test-retest reliability of $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values of LU10 region. Additionally, we compared $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values of LU10 between FD and HC, and examined the relationship between LU10 color parameters and seven questionnaires scores. Results: Only $L^*$ values in LU10 region were significantly higher in FD compared with HC. GIS scores and the subset scores of NDI had a positive correlation with $L^*$ values significantly. Correlation coefficients of test-retest reliability of skin color measurement of LU10 ranged from 0.871 to 0.936 representing very strongly statistically significant (P<0.001). Conclusions: We confirmed the difference of skin color in LU10 region between FD and HC, and relationship between LU10 skin color parameters and dyspeptic symptoms.
Objectives: This study measured the thickness of the abdominal wall at abdominal acupoints using ultrasonography and then investigated the correlations between the thickness of the abdominal wall and other characteristics of patients with functional dyspepsia (FD). Methods: Thirty patients with FD were enrolled in the study from September 2015 to March 2016. The thickness of the abdominal wall was measured at Shangwan (CV12), Zhongwan (CV13), and the left Liangmen (ST21). In addition, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), duration of FD, and the sternocostal angle were investigated. The severities of spleen qi deficiency and the dyspepsia symptoms were assessed by the Spleen Qi Deficiency Questionnaire (SQDQ) and the Nepean Dyspepsia Index-Korean version (NDI-K). Results: The average thickness of the abdominal wall was $24.66{\pm}6.69mm$ at Shangwan, $21.17{\pm}5.83mm$ at Zhongwan, and $21.72{\pm}5.72mm$ at Linagmen, and there were significant differences between the thickness at Shangwan and Zhongwan (p=0.046). Furthermore, there were significant differences between the thickness of the abdominal wall at Zhongwan and the sternocostal angle (r=0.396, p=0.037). Conclusions: These findings indicate the possibility of estimating the thickness of the abdominal wall by looking at the characteristics of patients with FD, including the sternocostal angle.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to report the effectiveness of Korean medicine in the treatment of functional dyspepsia in a fibromyalgia patient with a history of long-term NSAIDs use. Methods: The patient was diagnosed as a Soeumin, one of the four constitution types in Korean medicine, and treated with herbal medicines such as Seungyangikgibuja-tang and Pyeongjinsunjeom-san. Acupuncture and moxibustion treatment were also performed. The severity of symptoms was assessed using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) of epigastric pain, daily oral intake changes, the Korean Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (KGSRS), the Gastrointestinal Symptom Score (GIS), and the Functional Dyspepsia-Quality of Life (FD-QOL) score. Results: After treatment for 48 days, the severity of epigastric pain decreased from NRS 8 to NRS 0, and daily oral intake was increased. The KGSRS score decreased from 55 to 43, the GIS score was reduced from 18 to 10, and the FD-QOL score also decreased from 69 to 55. Conclusions: This study suggests that Korean medical treatment could be an effective option for treating functional dyspepsia in fibromyalgia patients with a history of long-term NSAIDs use.

Objectives : To evaluate the evidence supporting the effectiveness of Chuna manual therapy for functional dyspepsia. Methods : We conducted search across the 3 electronic databases (Pubmed, CAJ and Oasis) to find all of randomized controlled clinical trials(RCTs) that used Chuna manual therapy as a treatment for functional dyspepsia. The methodological quality of each RCT was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results : Thirteen RCTs met our inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis showed positive results for the use of Chuna manual therapy combined with medication treatments in terms of the efficacy rate when compared to medication treatments alone. Positive results were also obtained, in terms of the efficacy rate, when comparing Chuna manual therapy combined with medication plus specific electromagnetic therapy to medication treatments alone. Conclusions : Our systematic review found encouraging but limited evidence of Chuna manual therapy for functional dyspepsia. However, to obtain stronger evidence without the drawbacks of trial design and the quality of studies, we recommend sham-controlled RCTs or comparative effectiveness research to test the effectiveness of Chuna manual therapy.
