  • This paper proposes a novel dynamically reconfigurable switch for various multimedia applications in hybrid NoC systems. Current NoC systems, which adopt hybrid NoC structure with fixed switch and job distribution algorithms, require designers to precisely predict the property of applications to be processed. This paper proposes a reconfigurable switch which minimizes buffer overflow in various multimedia applications running on an NoC system. To verify the performance of the proposed system, we performed experiments on various multimedia applications running on embedded systems, such as MPEG4 and MP3 decoder, GPS positioning system, and OFDM demodulator. Experimental results show that buffer overflow has been decreased by 41.8% and 29.0%, respectively, when compared with NoC systems having sub-clusters with mesh or star topology. Power usage has been increased by 2.3% compared with hybrid NoC systems using fixed switches, and chip area has been increased from -0.6% to 5.7% depending on sub-cluster topology.

  • In this paper, we propose a multi-threading system to support reconfigurable hardware accelerators on Zynq SoC. We implement high-performance JPEG decoder with reconfigurable 2D IDCT hardware accelerators to achieve maximum performance available on the platform. In this system, up to four reconfigurable hardware accelerators synchronized with SW threads can be dynamically reconfigured to provide adaptive computing capabilities according to the given image resolution and the compression ratio. JPEG decoding is operated using images with resolutions 480p, 720p, 1080p at the compression ratio of 7:1-109:1. We show that significant performance improvements are achieved as the image resolution or the compression ratio increase. For 1080p resolution, the performance improvement is up to 79.11 times with throughput speed of 99 fps at the compression ratio 17:1.

  • This paper describes the architecture and modeling of adaptive and reconfigurable OS in wireless distributed sensor networks. Before initial sensor nodes are deployed in a sensor field, minimum functions including basic OS and routing algorithms are required for these nodes to send request messages for dynamic reconfigurations and receive response messages from a task manager. When the downloading is finished, each sensor node can reconfigure the initial state and be ready to start its functions. By applying this reconfigurable modeling, sensor nodes can be easily deployed in the sensor field and dynamically programmed during a bootstrap process.

  • Reconfigurable array architecture is recently attracting much attention. It is a flexible hardware architecture, which can dynamically change its configuration to execute various functions while maintainning high performance. However, pursuing flexibility and performance at the same time leads to complexity, thereby makes the mapping of applications a difficult process. There have been attempts to use compiler or high level synthesis techniques to solve the problem. In this paper, we propose yet another method, which uses libraries for the mapping to provide an abstracttion of the internal structure and at the same time to reduce the development time and efforts through the automated process. We have selected a JPEG decoder as an example to apply the proposed method. As a result, we obtained about 20% less performance compared to manual mapping but development time is dramatically reduced to less than 1%.

  • We propose a transverse load sensor with reconfigurable measurement accuracy based on a microwave photonic filter in the $K_u$ band, incorporating a polarization-maintaining fiber Bragg grating. A prototype sensor with a reconfigurable measurement accuracy tuning range from 6.09 to 9.56 GHz/(N/mm), and corresponding minimal detectable load range from 0.0167 to 0.0263 N/mm, is experimentally demonstrated. The results illustrate that up to 40% manufacturing error in the grating length can be dynamically calibrated to the same corresponding measurement accuracy for the proposed transverse load sensor, by controlling the semiconductor optical amplifier's injection current in the range of 154 to 419 mA.

  • This paper presents the concept of dynamically reconfigurable space by introducing smart building components. Thanks to the advances in ubiquitous computing and ITC technology, we are able to expect, in the near future, the aspects of future buildings which may transform their appearance and states to perform specific functions. In other words, it is certain that the building space will actively reconfigure itself to accommodate user's needs once we acquire proper technologies. Based on the assumption that building components may not be transformed through the magical process, but change its physical states (e.g. transparency, illumination, display contents, etc.) and functions of embedded devices (e.g. audio, actuators, sensors, etc.), we can envision a dynamically reconfigurable smart space. In order to conceptualize such spaces, critical surveys have been conducted on current works of leading architects. When the room needs to be used as a specific function room, the components need to change theirs states or to behave in a certain manner to create an optimum environment. Our model defines the relationships and elements to describe the mechanism of reconfigurable space. We expect this model provides a conceptual guideline for developing a smart building components based on spatial service scenarios. Therefore, a future smart spaces implemented by integrating various technologies are not designed in deterministic manner, so that spatial functions are expanded without constrained by physical existence.

  • Recently, many researches on RC(Reconfigurable Computing) with highly complex FPGA's and reconfigurable processors have been reported, and even some attempts for commercialization have been successful. In this paper, we introduce the design methodology for implementing DES crypto algorithm on small-capacity FPGA by using its dynamic reconfigurability and a system-level verification technique. Throughout this design project, we could evaluate the effectiveness of this approach, which is the dynamic reconfigurability of FPGAs makes the efficient trade-off between the performance and the cost robustly viable.

  • Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) is an innovative technique to precisely control the phase of incident signals with the help of low-cost passive reflective elements. It shows excellent potential in the sixth generation of mobile communication systems, which not only extends wireless coverage but also boosts channel capacity. Considering that multipath propagation and a high number of antennas are involved in RIS in assisted mega multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, it suffers from severe channel fading and multipath effects, which in turn lead to signal instability and degradation of transmission performance. To overcome this obstacle, this essay suggests an improved gradient optimization algorithm to dynamically and optimally adjust the phase of the reflective elements to counteract channel fading and multipath effects as a strategy. In order to overcome the optimization problem of falling into local minima, this paper proposes an adaptive learning rate algorithm based on Adagrad improvement, which searches for the global optimal solution more efficiently and improves the robustness of the optimization algorithm. The suggested technique helps to enhance the estimate of channel efficiency of RIS-assisted large MIMO systems, according to simulation results.

  • A RMON agent system, which locates on a subnet, collects the network traffic information for management by retrieving and analyzing all of the packets on the subnet. The RMON agent system can miss some packets due to the high packet analyzing overhead when the number of packets on the subnet is huge. In this paper, we have developed a light-weight RMON agent system that can handle a large amount of packets without packet loss. Our RMON agent system has also been designed such that its functionality can be added dynamically when needed. To demonstrate the dynamic reconfiguration capability of our RMON agent system, a simple port scanning attack detection module is added to the RMON agent system. We have also evaluated the performance of our RMON agent system on a large network that has a huge traffic. The test result has shown our RMON agent system can analyze the network packets without packet loss.

  • When we conduct development of a large-size SI project, it is highly necessary to utilize an appropriate application framework which helps to build a qualified software with high productivity in a short period of time. In this paper, we propose the architecture of a dynamically reconfigurable CBD application integration framework that has been used for developing large-scale e-business applications to achieve high development productivity and maintainability. This Integration framework can easily extend its functionalities, and dynamically change its configuration during run time according to the business category, such as applying interaction patterns among main components in software architecture, rules, policies, and environmental parameters. Dynamic reconfiguration has the feature to make applications be easily customized for changeable requirements. Through our application integration framework, huge sizes of contents can be managed according to the business category as well, by keeping configuration informations and huge volumes of source codes. In order to evaluate out application integration framework in terms of performance criteria, we present experimental results of throughputs from the framework by yielding dynamic configuration without any performance degradation.
