  • A Satellite shipping container must afford the satellite a relatively benign thermal, vibration, and particle environment that is oblivious to the extreme temperatures, sand, dust, vibrations and shocks that can accompany the transportation. In this study, we have designed a vibration isolation system of a spacecraft container that will be used to transport a satellite called KOMPSAT (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite) -2 from KARI (Korea Aerospace Research Institute) Taejon to its launch site. To identify the dynamic characteristics of the system, a 1/3-scaled mockup of the container was developed. A large electro-magnetic shaker (Max. 240 KN) was used to excite the mockup, and vibration signals from 20 points were collected for modal tests. Numerical simulations through CATIA 3D Modeling were performed to identify the behavior of isolation springs. The results showed that a simplified model predicts the behavior in a reasonable accuracy. Moreover, the model guides us how to design a full-scaled satellite-shipping container.

  • This research is concerned with the experiments on buckling characteristics of strain energy hinge(SEH) for solar arrays. The dynamic characteristics of the strain energy hinge is very important since it affects the shape and speed of the solar array deployment. The rapid deployment results in overshoot and undesirable residual vibrations. In this study, we carry out a series of buckling experiments to identify the dynamic characteristics of the SEH, which is made of strip measures. Buckling tests were done on the single-plate, double-plate and triple-plate SEH and VSEH. The experimental results show that the SEH has a very complex buckling behavior which can not be coped with theoretically. The modeling problem of the SEH is also discussed.

  • In the paper, a fractional derivative Kelvin-Voigt model describing the dynamic behavior of a special class of fluid viscous dampers, is presented. First of all, in order to verify their mechanical properties, two devices were tested the former behaving as a pure damper (PD device), whereas the latter as an elastic-damping device (ED device). For both, quasi-static and dynamic tests were carried out under imposed displacement control. Secondarily, in order to describe their cyclical behavior, a model composed by an elastic and a damping element connected in parallel was defined. The elastic force was assumed as a linear function of the displacement whereas the damping one was expressed by a fractional derivative of the displacement. By setting an appropriate numerical algorithm, the model parameters (fractional derivative order, damping coefficient and elastic stiffness) were identified by experimental results. The estimated values allowed to outline the main parameter properties on which depend both the elastic as well as the damping behavior of the considered devices.

  • This study is aimed at formulating an empirical equation for the across-wind fluctuating moment and spectral density coefficient, which are needed to estimate the across-wind dynamic responses of tall buildings, as a function of the side ratios of buildings. In order to estimate an empirical formula, wind tunnel tests were conducted on aero-elastic models of the rectangular prisms with various aspect and side ratios in turbulent boundary layer flows. In this paper, criteria for the across-wind fluctuating moment and spectral density are briefly discussed and the results are analyzed mainly as a function of the side ratios of the buildings. Finally, empirical formulas for the across-wind fluctuating moment coefficient and spectral density coefficient according to variation of the aspect ratio are proposed.

  • Intensive experimental investigation has been conducted on the characteristics of model tank with intruded flow. The remaining flow inside tank contribute to the dynamic behavior and further closely related to the stability of vessel as well. To understand the importance of the trapped flow and its dynamic effects a series of systematic tests were conducted using a bench tester that could generate periodic roll motion and also complex motions of combined roll-heave-sway. To accommodate experimental conditions and to create three degree freedom of motions, a bench tester was fabricated and verified. Having similarities in terms of flow trapped inside tank, theoretical approaches for A.R.T. were applied to the study. The major parameters including roll angle, period and flow height were varied in the experiments to obtain the characteristics of model tank.

  • The performance evaluation of existing structures is important to study the safety of those structures with changing the loads over the lifetime of structures. Therefore, this study aims at evaluating the Seong-Su bridge, Seoul, Korea, using structural health monitoring (SHM) system. The static and dynamic tests are used to assess the behavior of the bridge. The statistical and wavelet analyses are used to demonstrate the behavior of the bridge in the time and frequency domains. The previous SHM results are used to assess the bridge performance. The results of this study show that the bridge performance under static and dynamic loads is safe in time and frequency domains.

  • In this study, microstructure evolution and crystallographic orientation are investigated under various deformation conditions in M1 magnesium alloy. M1 magnesium ingot was rolled at 673 K with the rolling reduction of 30%. The compression test specimens were machined out from rolled plate, and then the specimens were annealed at 823 K for 1h. Uniaxial compression tests were conducted at 723 K and under the strain rate ranging from $5.0{\times}10^{-4}s^{-1}$ to $5.0{\times}10^{-2}s^{-1}$ up to a true strain of -1.0. For observation of crystal orientation distribution, EBSD measurement was performed. Occurrence of the dynamic recrystallization and grain boundary migration were confirmed in all case of the specimens. The distribution of the grains is not uniformed in the experimental conditions.

  • This study develops finite element models for seismically-deficient reinforced concrete building frame retrofitted using fiber-reinforced polymer jacketing system and validates the finite element models with full-scale dynamic test for as-built and retrofitted conditions. The bond-slip effects measured from a past experimental study were modeled using one-dimensional slide line model, and the bond-slip models were implemented to the finite element models. The finite element model can predict story displacement and inter-story drift ratio with slight simulation variation compared to the measured responses from the full-scale dynamic tests.

  • Recently much research are has been done into the compositions of lead-free solders. As a result, there has been a rapid increase in the number of new compositions. In the past, the properties of these new compositions were determined and verified through drop-impact tests. However, these drop tests were expensive and it took a long time to obtain a result. The main goal of this study was to establish an analytical method capable of predicting the impact life-time of a new solder composition for board-level flip chips though the application of drop simulations using LS-DYNA. Based on the reaction load obtain with LS-DYNA, the drop-impact fracture cycles were predicted. The study was performed using a Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu solder (305 composition). To verify the reliability of the proposed analytical method, the results of the drop-impact tests and life-time analysis were compared, and were found to be in good agreement. Thus, the new analytical method was shown to be very useful and effective.

  • A vertical test stand based on launcher propulsion system was constructed and several tests for the determination of cyclogram were carried out. To make an accurate estimation, static and dynamic pressures were measured and analyzed. Especially, static pressure measurements using fast response sensors without extension tubes were used to determine operation sequence more evidently. The standard operation times of final valves were determined in cold flow tests with an engine head, and fire formation time in combustion chamber was checked in an ignition test with an ignitor only. On the basis of these tests, ignition sequence was established and combustion test cyclogram was finally determined. According to combustion test, test results were well matched with the determined cyclogram within 0.05 sec.
