  • PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of anti-stripping on asphalt mixtures constituting anti-stripping agents. METHODS : Based on the literature review, asphalt mixture added with anti-stripping agents was prepared, and these asphalt mixtures were evaluated for anti-stripping properties for each anti-stripping agent through various lab tests, namely, tensile strength ratio (TSR), dynamic immersion test, uniaxial compression test, and indirect tensile strength test (IDT). The liquid anti-stripping agents used in the lab test were premixed with each asphalt binder (PG 64-22, PG 76-22) before being mixed with the aggregate. RESULTS :The result of the TSR test revealed that the effect of anti-stripping was highest when hydrated lime and liquid anti-stripping agent W were added. The correlation coefficient $R^2$ between the TSR result and cohesion ratio is 0.99, which indicates that the sensitivity of the TSR to moisture damage is reliable from the mechanical point of view. The covering ratio of the asphalt binder to the liquid anti-stripping agent W was determined to be higher than that to the other liquid anti-stripping agents. CONCLUSIONS :It is considered that the improved moisture resistance of asphalt mixture as a result of the use of anti-stripping agents can reduce the incidence of various pavement damages such as portholes caused by stripping, and the performance life of the asphalt road pavement can be prolonged.

  • The purpose of this research is to determine the dynamic Magnus effect data of a spinning projectile in wind-tunnel testing. In the present work, the high-speed wind-tunnel tests for the Magnus effect measurements were conducted on a 155-mm spin-stabilized projectile model in the Agency for Defense Development's Tri-Sonic Wind Tunnel at spin rates about 12,000 rpm. The test Mach numbers ranged from 0.7 to 2.0, and the angles of attack ranged from -4 to +10 deg. The validity of the wind-tunnel measurement techniques was evaluated by comparing them with the previous test results on the same configuration. The experimental results show that fair to good agreement is obtained with resonable accuracy.

  • Three-dimensional continuum modeling of dynamic soil-pile-structure interaction embedded in a liquefiable sand was carried out. Finn model which can model liquefaction behavior using effective stress method was adopted to simulate development of pore water pressure according to shear deformation of soil directly in real time. Finn model was incorporated into Non-linear elastic, Mohr-Coulomb plastic model. Calibration of proposed modeling method was performed by comparing the results with those of the centrifuge tests performed by Wilson (1998). Excess pore pressure ratio, pile bending moment, pile head displacement-time history according to depth calculated by numerical analysis agreed reasonably well with the test results. Validation of the proposed modeling method was later performed using another test case, and good agreement between the computed and measured values was observed.

  • The secondary animation technology for the detailed objects including accessories is being studied and applied to the modern game development. The jiggle-bone deformer is used for 3D graphic tools as a technology to create the animation of these objects, but it is disadvantageous in that the real-time modification is difficult and the graphic developers need much time. The secondary animation can also be realized using a physical game engine, but the cost of animation process increases when many objects in a scene of a game are rendered, and it has a low efficiency. This paper proposes a dynamic jiggle-bone animation algorithm, which can be modified in real time and has the similar effect to the physical game engine. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, tests were conducted with varied number of bones and for the case of one scene with the animation of many jiggle-bones, and the results were adjudged relatively efficient.

  • The floating crane vessel in waves gives rise to the motion of the lifted object which is connected to the hoisting wire. The dynamic tension induced by the lifted object also affects the motion responses of the floating crane vessel in return. In this study, coupled motion responses of a floating crane vessel and a lifted subsea manifold during deep-water installation operations were investigated by both experiments and numerical calculations. A series of model tests for the deep-water lifting operation were performed at Ocean Engineering Basin of KRISO. For the model test, the vessel with a crane control system and a typical subsea manifold were examined. To validate the experimental results, a frequency-domain motion analysis method is applied. The coupled motion equations of the crane vessel and the lifted object are solved in the frequency domain with an additional linear stiffness matrix due to the hoisting wire. The hydrodynamic coefficients of the lifted object, which is a significant factor to affect the coupled dynamics, are estimated based on the perforation value of the structure and the CFD results. The discussions were made on three main points. First, the motion characteristics of the lifted object as well as the crane vessel were studied by comparing the calculation results. Second, the dynamic tension of the hoisting wire were evaluated under the various wave conditions. Final discussion was made on the effect of passive heave compensator on the motion and tension responses.

  • The high temperature properties of vanadium and molybdenum added high silicon ductile iron, so called V-Mo-Si ductile iron, were investigated. The (V,Mo) complex carbides and Mo carbides precipitated at the cellular boundaries of the as-cast specimens. The microhardness of the (V,Mo) carbides were in the range of 553-619, while that of the Mo carbides in the range of 341-390. The thermo-mechanical tests were carried out with a Gleeble system at 700 and $800^{\circ}C$ under vacuum condition. The tensile strengths of the specimen tested at $700^{\circ}C$ with the dynamic deformation rate of 50 mm/sec and those with the static deformation rate of 0.15 mm/sec were 235.7 and 115.3 MPa, while the reduction in area were 23.7 and 22.4%, respectively. At the high dynamic deformation rates, the tensile strength was steeply increased due to promoting the brittle fracture of pearlite in the matrix of the specimens. But the changes of the reduction in area with the deformation rates on the same specimens were negligible. The weight gain of the V-Mo-Si specimens oxidized in the air atmosphere for 6 hours at 800 and $900^{\circ}C$ were 1.1 and 4.1.%, respectively. The cross-sectional microstructure of oxidized specimens consisted of the porous external scale layer grown outside from the original surface, the dense internal scale layer grown into the original surface, the decarburized ferrite layer between the internal scale and the matrix of base metal. The (V,Mo) carbides and Mo carbides formed in the matrix of as-cast specimen did not decompose during oxidation at 900 for 24 hours in air atmosphere.

  • In forest products industry, a variety of nondestructive evaluation techniques are now being used to assess the mechanical properties of structural lumber. Ultrasonic and longitudinal vibration technique are frequently used to assess the modulus of elasticity(MOE) of lumber. The objective of this research was to evaluate the MOE and modulus of rupture(MOR) of small-diameter of Larix log(Larix kaempferi Carr.), using these techniques. In this study, 50 small-diameter logs were nondestructiveively evaluated. The dynamic modulus of elasticity(Eu) of the logs was first evaluated, using an ultrasonic method. After ultrasonic tests, the logs were measured using a longitudinal vibration technique(Ev). Static bending test was then performed on the logs to obtain the static modulus of elasticity(Es) and modulus of rupture of these logs. In general, the dynamic MOE (Ev) of logs was closely co..elated with the stati, MOE for log. Based on the results of these experiments, it can be concluded that small-diameter Larix logs can be successfully evaluated by Ultrasonic and longitudinal vibration technique. The experimental results indicated that the ultrasonic technique is effective to the log, which contains many knots. The longitudinal vibration technique is effective to the log, in which many cracks are included.

  • It is hard to predict the mechanical characteristics of discontinuous stone masonry structures with the use of by the static analysis method, because of irregularity of face stones and also due to randomness of backfill materials. Inversely, one can estimate the mechanical characteristics by comparing the natural frequencies between measured from the field tests and computed from the analytical models. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effectiveness and confidence of the computational modeling method of ancient stone arch bridges in Korea and to find the factors influencing their dynamic characteristics. The results revealed that the rigidity of spandrel walls and backfill materials are the most important factors influencing the natural frequencies of stone arch bridges, which are the critical for the stability of the stone arch structure.

  • Rocking behavior of shallow foundation during the earthquake can reduce the seismic load of the superstructure. The dynamic centrifuge tests were performed to investigate the availability of using rocking behavior for the weathered soil condition. The centrifuge test model was composed of the weathered soil, shallow foundation and single degree of freedom structure. And the accelerations of soil, foundation and structure, and the foundation settlement were measured during the earthquake. From the test result, the seismic load of the structure for the strong earthquake input was reduced by the rocking behavior with foundation uplift and the maximum foundation settlement was less than 0.5% of the foundation width. This shows the potential that the rocking foundation concept can be used in the economical seismic design of foundation for the weathered soil in the future with additional research and verification.
