  • This paper describes the feasibility of compacting subgrade layer in thicker lifts than currently permitted as 20 cm. This project involved constructing and testing a full scale test section in highway. Soil stiffness in field was evaluated by a nondestructive testing method, called Geogage. Quality control tests and FE Analysis were also conducted. Typical dynamic compaction roller of 11ton weight is applied for full scale test and a Mohr-Coulomb model and Plane strain condition are used for FE Analysis. The results showed that compaction-induced stress and dissipated energy are mainly depend on depth of soil and it could be possible to increase thickness of a lift.

  • While the pavement design is based on mechanical property such dynamic elastic modulus, the quality of highway subgrade during construction is controled by the optimum moisture content(OMC) and maximum dry density(${\gamma}$$\_$dmax/). However, since the quality control based on the OMC and maximum dry density does not consider the mechanical characteristics, there is a conceptional gap between design and PMS(pavement management system). Therefore, it is necessary to develope a new qualify control system using mechanical property for highway construction in more rational way. To achieve this goal, it is planned to perform various laboratory tests to collect mechanical properties of subgrade soil samples from several highway construction sites and to propose the relationship between dry unit weight (or OMC) and mechanical parameters. In this paper, the experimental data so far obtained are presented and analyzed. In addition, further research plan is presented and discussed.

  • The purposes of this study were 1) to determine the relationship between antigravity control(supine flexion and prone extension) and postural control(static and dynamic balance) by age, 2) to determine the quality of antigravity and postural control, and 3) to determine whether sex difference correlates with differences in antigravity and postural control in young normal children. We tested 120 children aged 4 to 7 years. The study results showed a significant relationship between antigravity and postural control by age. Quality scale measurements(r=0.90) indicated that the children in this study had not yet developed full antigravity or postural control. The study results revealed differences between sexes(f>m in 5 of 7 tests) and a significant relationship by age in antigravity and postural control.

  • The durability of concrete involves resistance to freeze-thaw action, corrosion, permeation, carbonation, chemical attack and so on. Generally, properties of concrete have been well understood under the separate action of these deterioration mechanisms. However, in practice, the degradation of concrete usually is the result of combined action of physical and chemical attack and can be accelerated by the combined action of several deterioration mechanisms. In the present study, to evaluate the combined deterioration by freeze-thaw action and seawater attack, ground granulated blast-furnace slag or silica fume concrete with water or seawater as mixing water was exposed to 300 cycles of freeze-thaw action. Tests were conducted to determined the relative dynamic modulus of elasticity and compressive strength. Furthermore, The MIP analysis were performed on the deteriorated part of concrete due to freeze-thaw action and seawater attack.

  • Electric arc furnaces (EAFs) use bulk electrical energy to create heat in metal refining industries. The electric arc process is a main cause of the degradation of the electric power quality such as voltage flicker due to the interaction of the high demand currents of the load with the supply system impedance. The stochastic models have described the aperiodic physical phenomena of EAFs. An alternative approach is to include deterministic chaos in the characterization of the arc currents. In this parer, a chaotic approach to such modeling is described and justified. At the same time, a DLL(Dynamic Link Library) module, which is a FORTRAN interface with TACS (Transient Analysis of Control Systems), is developed to implement the chaotic load model in the Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). The details of the module and the results of tests performed on the module to verify the model and to illustrate its capabilities are presented in this paper.

  • The GPS receiver developed by KARI for the satellite launch vehicle should operate under severe dynamic environments such as high acceleration and jerk. Several terrestrial tests including the outdoor centrifuge test are planed in order to verify performances of the GPS receiver before flight. This paper deals with preliminary test results of the GPS receiver using a GPS signal generator before the centrifuge test that is a performance test of the GPS receiver using live GPS satellite signals. Test methods of the GPS receiver for the satellite launch vehicle under high centripetal acceleration and jerk utilizing a GPS signal generator are described. The simulation results are also analyzed in this paper.

  • The conventional hysterysis band DTC(Direct Torque Control) strategy have relatively high torque ripple at low speed and variable switching frequency according to motor speed even though it provides a fast torque response with very simple scheme consisted with only two hysteresis band comparators and a switching table for torque and flux control. In this paper, author proposed a new DTC scheme based on the torque slope and reference voltage control. The new scheme can maintain the minimized torque ripple and constant switching frequency. Experimental tests carried out with an 1.5kW induction motor drive system show improved dynamic characteristics and prove the feasibility of proposed strategy.

  • This paper describes real time dynamic tests on the digital distance relay using new digital test system including RTDS(Real Time Digital Simulator) in KEPRI. The RTDS is developed by the Manitoba HVDC Research Centre and consists of specialized hardware and software which allows transients simulation of electrical power systems in real time. From high impedance fault test, it is known that the characteristics of distance reach is influenced by load flow. A detailed discussion of relay test using the RTDS simulator, high impedance faults and test results are included in the paper.

  • The bridge deck section composed of a concrete slab resting on two I-beam girders are known to be susceptible to flutter instability and vortex shedding. Moreover, the cable stayed bridge in construction is more vulnerable to wind rather than in service when the free cantilever construction method is applied. This paper describes the effect of the dynamic wind loads on the bridge during construction and the effect of alternative temporary stabilizing measures. Therefore, a series of wind tunnel tests and numerical analysis were carried out to determine if any countermeasures were required.

  • Within the framework of brake-by-wire technology, this paper presents five types of novel models of electro-mechanical disk brake calipers with self-servo mechanism which provides self-servo effect of boosting a friction force generated between the brake pad and the rotor disk surface. The models have been developed utilizing patent map analysis results of previous invents of electro-mechanical brake calipers. The feasibility of the developed motor-driven brake caliper models have been validated through the dynamic simulation analysis. Among the developed models, the caliper mechanism with separated pressure plate was designed especially in detail and was made as a pilot. The pilot caliper has been installed on the simple test bed constructed with domestic passenger car brake components, and its function and effectiveness have been validated through several types of experimental tests.
