Application of structural health monitoring in civil infrastructure

  • The emerging sensor-based structural health monitoring (SHM) technology has a potential for cost-effective maintenance of aging civil infrastructure systems. The author proposes to integrate continuous and global monitoring using on-structure sensors with targeted local non-destructive evaluation (NDE). Significant technical challenges arise, however, from the lack of cost-effective sensors for monitoring spatially large structures, as well as reliable methods for interpreting sensor data into structural health conditions. This paper reviews recent efforts and advances made in addressing these challenges, with example sensor hardware and health monitoring software developed in the author's research center. The hardware includes a novel fiber optic accelerometer, a vision-based displacement sensor, a distributed strain sensor, and a microwave imaging NDE device. The health monitoring software includes a number of system identification methods such as the neural networks, extended Kalman filter, and nonlinear damping identificaiton based on structural dynamic response measurement. These methods have been experimentally validated through seismic shaking table tests of a realistic bridge model and tested in a number of instrumented bridges and buildings.

  • This paper presents a numerical method to simulate ductile tearing in cracked components under high strain rates using finite element damage analysis. The strain rate dependence on tensile properties and multiaxial fracture strain is characterized by the model developed by Johnson and Cook. The damage model is then defined based on the ductility exhaustion concept using the strain rate dependent multiaxial fracture strain concept. The proposed model is applied to simulate previously published three cracked pipe bending test results under two different test speed conditions. Simulated results show overall good agreement with experimental results.

  • In this study, cyclic triaxial tests were carried out with the coarse granular materials used in Korean railway infrastructure (reinforced trackbed, gravel of transition zone, upper subgrade of railway) and Young's modulus for the target materials in small strain level were suggested. And the result of elastic modulus suggested in this study is expected to be effectively applied to dynamic analysis of the railway embankment structure using similar material, since the grain size distributions and unit weight of the material tested in this study are specified in Korean Railway Design Criteria.

FOFIS : Forest Fire Information Systems (FOFIS: 산불 정보 시스템)

  • The main purpose of this paper is to design and implement forest fire information system (FOFIS) for effective prevention of forest fire using GIS, database, 3-D graphics, and simulation techniques. In contrast to conventional fire information systems that are mostly based on the 2-D graphics and analytic modeling approaches, we have proposed the cell-based modeling approaches, i.e., spatial, data, and simulation modeling approaches. The cell-based spatial modeling is proposed by eliminating the cliff effect of the typical elevation model so that it can provide realistic 3-D graphics of the forest fire. The cell-based data modeling of geography, meteorology, and forestry information is also proposed. The cell-based dynamic modeling for forecasting of the fire diffusion is developed using the variable structure modeling techniques. Several simulation tests of FOFIS performed on a sample forest area of Chungdo, Kyungsangbukdo will demonstrate our approaches.

  • In the article 16 of the domestic rolling stock crashworthiness regulations, the collision acceleration level during collision accidents should remain under the maximum 7.5g and the average 5g. By the way, the accelerations obtained in crash simulations and tests contain many kinds of high frequency components due to numerical oscillations or noisy signals. So, this paper aims to develop reliable post-processing methods to filter high frequency oscillations and extract the rigid body motions of passenger rail cars. For this study we used the 1-dimensional dynamic model of KHST (Korean high-speed train), and evaluated acceleration data at the driver's area in the first power car and the passenger area in the following trailer.

  • In the previous study, an improved QRD (QR Decomposition)-ILS(Iterative Least-Squares) method is proposed to estimate the structural parameters at the element level using response data alone without using any information of excitation measurements for the assessment of local damages and deterioration in complex and large structural systems. But for a complex and large structural system, where response measurement at every dynamic degree of freedom(DDOF) is not possible, the absence of some observation points of responses and its effect on the proposed SI method must be studied In the paper, a QRD-ILS technique that utilizes the known intact stiffness information estimated based on the visual inspection, field measurements and/or NDT tests is proposed to identify local damages of fracture critical members using measured responses only at limited DDOFs. A numerical example is used to illustrate the application of this technique. The results indicate that the proposed SI technique is very simple but efficient, since no input information are required with only limited observations.

  • A Binary Decision Diagram (BDD) is a graph-based data structure that calculates an exact top event probability (TEP). It has been a very difficult task to develop an efficient BDD algorithm that can solve a large problem since it is highly memory consuming. In order to solve a large reliability problem within limited computational resources, many attempts have been made, such as static and dynamic variable ordering schemes, to minimize BDD size. Additional effort was the development of a ZBDD (Zero-suppressed BDD) algorithm to calculate an approximate TEP. The present method is the first successful application of a BDD truncation. The new method is an efficient method to maintain a small BDD size by a BDD truncation during a BDD calculation. The benchmark tests demonstrate the efficiency of the developed method. The TEP rapidly converges to an exact value according to a lowered truncation limit.

Brâncuşi Endless Column: A Masterpiece of Art and Engineering

  • The Endless Column by Constantin Brâncuşi is "the most radical sculpture in the history of classic modernism", "the only one of modern times that can be compared with the great Egyptian, Greek and Renaissance monuments". It "is not only an artistic masterpiece, but also an extraordinary feat of engineering", the greatest example of collaboration between a sculptor and an engineer. This article illustrates the path that led the artist to conception of the column, its planning and construction, the investigations on preservation of the monument and its restoration, the aerodynamic tests in the wind tunnel, the modeling of the wind and the structure in virtue of which the aeroelastic instability, dynamic response and fatigue life were investigated. The conclusions discuss the column's role in the panorama of the great works of modern engineering.

East Asian five stock market linkages (아시아 주식수익률의 동조화에 대한 연구)

  • The study examines common component existing in five Asian countries from 1991 to 2007. To do this, the daily stock market indices of Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines were used. Using a Vector Autoregressive Model this paper analyzes causal relations and dynamic interactions between five Asian stock markets. The findings in this study indicate that level of five Asian stock markets' stock return linkages are low. First, from the statistics for pair-wise Granger causality tests, I find Granger-causal relationship between Korea and Indonesia and between Malaysia and and Indonesia. Second, from the results of response function and the statistics of variance decomposition, I find that week shocks to Korean stock market return on Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines stock market returns. The results indicate increased Asian stock market linkages but the level is very low. This implies that the benefits of diversification within the five Asian stock markets are still existed.

  • Recrystallization behavior during ingot-breakdown process of Alloy 718 was investigated with finite element analysis and experimental approaches. In order to analyze microstructural changes during the cogging process of an Alloy 718 ingot, the side-pressing and heat treatment tests were performed at different temperatures and ram speed. From the side-pressing and heat treatment test results, it was found that microstructural changes during hot forging of Alloy 718 ingot greatly influenced on a close interaction between dynamic and static-recrystallization behaviors. A recrystallization model of Alloy 718 was used to predict the complex microstructural variation during continuous heating and forging processes of the cogging, and the predicted grain size and its distribution were compared with the actual cogged Alloy 718 billet.
