Knudsen number is the ratio of molecular mean free path versus mm thickness and the criterion to determine the flow form. When its value is lower than 0.01, the flow can be assumed to has no slip boundary condition. And in the case that the value is between 0.01 and 10, then the flow has slip boundary condition at both the adjacent walls. The condition of the air flow between the rotating journal and top foil in the air foil bearing is determined by the rotating speed and load, and the Knudsen number is also varied by those values. Because the molecular mean free path is variable to the pressure and temperature, more exact formulation is necessary to understand and analyze the flow regime. In this study, the analysis considering Knudsen number formulated with those variables (pressure, temperature and mm thickness) was executed. The approximate value was examined using the equation to confirm whether the flow has the slip or no-slip boundary condition. From the analytic investigation, it was decided to range approximately 0.01 to 1.0 and the flow can be supposed to have the slip boundary condition. Under the condition of the slip flow, the static characteristics of the air foil bearing were examined using modified Reynolds equations. The results were compared with those considering no slip condition. It shows that the slip condition makes the flow decelerates and the load carrying capacity decreases compared with no slip condition. And as the bearing number and eccentricity ratio increase, the load carrying capacity also increased at both the cases. From this result, it can be supposed that the bearing torque also increases. In the analysis of the dynamic characteristics, the perturbed Knudsen number was taken into consideration. Because the Knudsen number is expressed as the terms of each variable, the perturbed equation can be simply derived. The results of both cases considering and not considering Knudsen number were compared each other. In the case of the direct terms of the stiffness and damping coefficients, the difference between both cases was little and increased as the bearing number and eccentricity ratio increased. And the cross terms have less or more differences.

The rural labor force has gradually been decreasing due to the decrement of the farm population and the increment of the aging population. To solve these problems, it is necessary to develop and study autonomous agricultural machinery. Therefore, analyzing the dynamic behavior of vehicles in an autonomous agricultural environment is important. Until now, most studies on agricultural machinery, especially on ground vehicle dynamics, have been done by field tests. However, these field test methods are time consuming and costly with seasonal restrictions. A research method that can replace existing field test methods by using simulations is needed. In this study, we did basic research analyzing the effect of the travelling speed of a tractor on tire slip using simulation software. A tractor simulation model was developed based on field conditions following a straight path. The simulation was done for three ranges of speed: 20 - 30 km/h (considered the normal travelling speed range), 6 - 8 km/h (considered the plow tillage speed range) and 2 - 4 km/h (considered the rotary tillage speed range). The results of the simulation show that the slip ratio and slip angle values tended to increase as the traveling speed range of the tractor decreased. From the simulation results, it can be concluded that at low tractor speeds, it becomes more difficult to control the vehicle path. In future research, simulations will be done with various work environments such as a curved path as well as with various friction coefficient conditions, and the simulation results will be experimentally verified by applying them to an agricultural tractor.
The purpose of this study were to evaluate the dynamic characteristics of the portable slipmeters with respect to actual slipping and to compare their output with those of force platform. The selected slipmeters were commonly used devices for slipperiness measurement in situ floors. Their output quantity represented force (BOT-3000), loss of energy(British pendulum striker) and angle of inclination(English XL). The validity of these devices was studied with respect to actual slipping using a force platform. The precision of these devices was also evaluated with force platform. Based on dynamics of human subject behavior when slipping during normal walking, the all devices tested in this study showed poor performances: low built up ratio, low normal pressure, and long contact time prior to slip. Nevertheless, their results reasonably correlated with those calculated from the ground reaction forces generated by the operation of the selected slipmeters on the force platform although the absolute values of COF from these three devices could be quite different. Also the results showed good repeatability under the some test conditions.
A differential case equipped with LSD(limited slip differential) has several advantages over a normal type for rear wheel drive vehicles. Specially, the torque distribution can be done between left and right drive wheel in the state of limited slip differential. Also although LSD types are very various according to operating type, medium and torque distribution, a multi-clutch type is generally applied to rear wheel drive vehicles. So, this study presents the analysis of design parameters for development of a friction plate for multi-clutch type LSD using vehicle road test, the simulation of analytical model and the development of vehicle dynamics model by a benchmark product. According to this investigation, the design parameters which are pre-load of coil spring, friction plate and contact area quantity, friction coefficient and TBR(torque bias ratio) for a friction plate are derived from experiment and simulation and consequently, vehicle dynamics model has been constructed for the development of friction plate for multi-clutch type LSD.

The slip-weakening model developed by Ohnaka and Yamashita is extended over the breakdown zone by equating the scaling relationships for the breakdown zone and the whole rupture area. For the extension, the study uses the relationship between rupture velocity and radiation efficiency, which was derived in the theory of linear elastic fracture mechanics, and the definition of fmax given in the specific barrier model proposed by Papageorgiou and Aki. The results clearly show that the extended scaling relationship is governed by the ratio of rupture velocity to S wave velocity, and the velocity ratio can be determined by the ratio of characteristic frequencies of a Fourier amplitude spectrum, which are corner frequency, fc, and source-controlled cut-off frequency, fmax, or vice versa. The derived relationship is tested by using the characteristic frequencies extracted from previous studies of more than 130 shallow crustal events (focal depth less than 25 km, MW 3.0~7.5) that occurred in Japan. Under the assumption of a dynamic similarity, the rupture velocity estimated from fmax/fc and the modified integral timescale give quite similar scale-dependence of the rupture area to that given by Kanamori and Anderson. Also, the results for large earthquakes show good agreement to the values from a kinematic inversion in previous studies. The test results also indicate the unavailability of the spectral self-similarity proposed by Aki because of the scale-dependent rupture velocity and the rupture velocity-dependent fmax/fc; however, the results do support the local similarity asserted by Ohnaka. It is also remarkable that the relationship between the rupture velocity and fmax/fc is quite similar to Kolmogorov's hypothesis on a similarity in the theory of isotropic turbulence.

The focal plane image stabilization for a satellite camera is one of the an effective method which can increase the satellite camera's image quality by removing the motion disturbance of a focal plane. The objectives of this article are to introduce the concept of the focal plane image stabilization and determine the best driving conditions of the actuator for the response and thrust. Under various driving condition the experiments have been performed to investigate the response and thrust characteristics of the piezoelectric driven stick-slip actuator of the focal plane image stabilizing device. From experiments, the best driving frequency and duty ratio for the magnesium slider are 70 kHz and 27%, respectively.

The extended slip-weakening model was investigated by using a compiled set of source-spectrum-related parameters, i.e. seismic moment Mo, S-wave velocity Vs, corner-frequency fc, and source-controlled high-cut frequency fmax, for 113 shallow crustal earthquakes (focal depth less than 25 km, MW 3.0~7.5) that occurred in Japan from 1987 to 2016. The investigation was focused on the characteristics of stress drop, radiation energy-to-seismic moment ratio, radiation efficiency, and fracture energy release rate, Gc. The scaling relationships of those source parameters were also investigated and compared with those in previous studies, which were based on generally used singular models with the dimensionless numbers corresponding to fc given by Brune and Madariaga. The results showed that the stress drop from the singular model with Madariaga's dimensionless number was equivalent to the breakdown stress drop, as well as Brune's effective stress, rather than to static stress drop as has been usually assumed. The scale dependence of stress drop showed a different tendency in accordance with the size category of the earthquakes, which may be divided into small-moderate earthquakes and moderate-large earthquakes by comparing to Mo = 1017~1018 Nm. The scale dependence was quite similar to that shown by Kanamori and Rivera. The scale dependence was not because of a poor dynamic range of recorded signals or missing data as asserted by Ide and Beroza, but rather it was because of the scale dependent Vr-induced local similarity of spectrum as shown in a previous study by the authors. The energy release rate Gc with respect to breakdown distance Dc from the extended slip-weakening model coincided with that given by Ellsworth and Beroza in a study on the rupture nucleation phase; and the empirical relationship given by Abercrombie and Rice can represent the results from the extended slip-weakening model, the results from laboratory stick-slip experiments by Ohnaka, and the results given by Ellsworth and Beroza simultaneously. Also the energy flux into the breakdown zone was well correlated with the breakdown stress drop, ${\tilde{e}}$ and peak slip velocity of the fault faces. Consequently, the investigation results indicate the appropriateness of the extended slip-weakening model.
To understand fluid dynamic forces acting on a structure subjected to two-phase flow, it is essential to get detailed information about the characteristics of two-phase flow. Stratified steady and unsteady two-phase flows between two parallel plates have been studied to investigate the general characteristics of the flow related to flow-induced vibration. Based on the spectral collocation method, a numerical approach has been developed for the unsteady two-phase flow. The method is validated by comparing numerical result to analytical one given for a simple harmonic two-phase flow. The flow parameters for the steady two-phase flow, such as void fraction and two-phase frictional multiplier, are evaluated. The dynamic characteristics of the unsteady two-phase flow, including the void fraction effect on the complex unsteady pressure, are illustrated.

The design of noncomposite construction for skew bridges with large skew angels has been often checked because composite construction may cause large stresses in the bridge deck. In this study, the analytical model considered dynamic behaviors for noncomposite skew bridges was proposed. Using the proposed analytical model, the effects of interactions between the concrete deck and steel girders such as composite construction, and noncomposite construction on the dynamic characteristics of simply supported skew bridges were investigated. A series of parametric studies for the total 27 skew bridges was conducted with respect to parameters such as girder spacing, skew angle, and deck aspect ratio. The slip at the interfaces between the concrete deck and steel girders may bring about longer vibration periods that result in the reduced total seismic base shear.
In this study, electronically controlled automatic transmission adopted on a subcompact model in the market was modelled, and the driving performances of the transmission were simulated with the models. Kinetic and dynamic models of working components are established. The driving simulation program is developed with those models, and the various driving conditions are analyzed. With the results, the dynamic behaviour of the engine and the automatic transmission is easily understood. Especially, the transient performances of torque converter and clutches are deeply analyzed. Skipping the vehicle road test by using this analyzing tool, we can expect the cost down and the reduction of the development period of automatic transmission.
