Seismic Curvature Ductility of RC Bridge Piers with 2.5 Aspect Ratio (형상비 2.5의 RC 교각의 내진 곡률연성도)

  • Due to the 1989 Loma Prieta, 1995 Hyogoken Nambu earthquakes, etc, a number of bridge columns  were collapsed in flexure-shear failures as a consequence of the premature termination of the column longitudinal reinforcement. Nevertheless, previous researches for the performance of bridge columns were concentrated on the flexural failure mode. It is well understood that the seismic behaviour of RC bridge piers was dependent on the performance of the plastic hinge of RC bridge piers, the ductility of which was desirable to be computed on the basis of the curvature. Experimental investigation was made to evaluate the variation of the curvature of the plastic hinge  region for the seismic performance of earthquake-damaged RC columns in flexure-shear failure mode. Seven test specimens in the aspect ratio of 2.5 were made with test parameters: confinement ratios, lap splices, and retrofitting FRP materials. They were damaged under series of artificial earthquakes that could be compatible in Korean peninsula. Directly after the pseudo-dynamic test, damaged columns were retested under inelastic reversal cyclic loading under a constant axial load, $P=0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Residual seismic capacity of damaged specimens was evaluated by analzying the moment-curvature hysteresis and the curvature ductility. Test results show that the biggest curvature was developed around 15cm above the footing, which induced the column failure. It was observed that RC bridge specimens with lap-spliced longitudinal steels appeared to fail at low curvature ductility but significant improvement was made in the curvature ductility of RC specimens with FRP straps wrapped around the plastic hinge region. Based on the experimental variation of the curvature of RC specimens, new equivalent length of the plastic hinge region was proposed by considering the lateral confinement in this study. The analytical and experimental relationship between the displacement and the curvature ductility were compared based on this proposal, which gave excellent result.

Biomechanical Analysis of Walking and Running after a Surgically Repaired Achilles Tendon Rupture (아킬레스건 파열 수술 후 걷기 및 달리기 운동역학적 분석)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in muscle strength, kinematics, and kinetics between injured and non-injured sides of the leg after Achilles Tendon Rupture surgery during walking and running. Method: The subjects (n=11; age = 30.63 ± 5.69 yrs; height = 172.00 ± 4.47 cm; mass = 77.00 ± 11.34 kg; time lapse from surgery = 29.81 ± 10.27 months) who experienced Achilles Tendon Rupture (ATR) surgery participated in this study. The walking and running trials were collected using infrared cameras (Oqus 300, Qualisys, Sweden, 100 Hz) on instrumented treadmill (Bertec, U.S.A., 1,000 Hz) and analyzed by using QTM (Qualisys Track Manager Ver. 2.15; Qualisys, U.S.A). The measured data were processed using Visual 3D (C-motion Inc., U.S.A.). The cutoff frequencies were set as 6 Hz and 12 Hz for walking and running kinematics respectively, while 100 Hz was used for force plate data. Results: In ATR group, muscle strength there were no difference between affected and unaffected sides (p> .05). In kinematic analysis, subjects showed greater ROM of knee joint flexion-extension in affected side compared to that of unaffected side during walking while smaller ROM of ankle dorsi-plantar and peak knee flexion were observed during running (p< .05). In kinetic analysis, subjects showed lower knee extension moment (running at 2.2 m/s) and positive ankle plantar-flexion power (running at 2.2 m/s, 3.3 m/s) in affected side compared to that of unaffected side (p< .05). This lower positive ankle joint power during a propulsive phase of running is related to slower ankle joint velocity in affected side of the subjects (p< .05). Conclusion: This study aimed to investigate the functional evaluation of the individuals after Achilles tendon rupture surgery through biomechanical analysis during walking and running trials. Based on the findings, greater reduction in dynamic joint function (i.e. lower positive ankle joint power) was found in the affected side of the leg compared to the unaffected side during running while there were no meaningful differences in ankle muscle strength and walking biomechanics. Therefore, before returning to daily life and sports activities, biomechanical analysis using more dynamic movements such as running and jumping trials followed by current clinical evaluations would be helpful in preventing Achilles tendon re-rupture or secondary injury.

EF Sensor-Based Hand Motion Detection and Automatic Frame Extraction (EF 센서기반 손동작 신호 감지 및 자동 프레임 추출)

  • In this paper, we propose a real-time method of detecting hand motions and extracting the signal frame induced by EF(Electric Field) sensors. The signal induced by hand motion includes not only noises caused by various environmental sources as well as sensor's physical placement, but also different initial off-set conditions. Thus, it has been considered as a challenging problem to detect the motion signal and extract the motion frame automatically in real-time. In this study, we remove the PLN(Power Line Noise) using LPF with 10Hz cut-off and successively apply MA(Moving Average) filter to obtain clean and smooth input motion signals. To sense a hand motion, we use two thresholds(positive and negative thresholds) with offset value to detect a starting as well as an ending moment of the motion. Using this approach, we can achieve the correct motion detection rate over 98%. Once the final motion frame is determined, the motion signals are normalized to be used in next process of classification or recognition stage such as LSTN deep neural networks. Our experiment and analysis show that our proposed methods produce better than 98% performance in correct motion detection rate as well as in frame-matching rate.

Analysis of activated colloidal crud in advanced and modular reactor under pump coastdown with kinetic corrosion

  • The analysis of rapid flow transients in Reactor Coolant Pumps (RCP) is essential for a reactor safety study. An accurate and precise analysis of the RCP coastdown is necessary for the reactor design. The coastdown of RCP affects the coolant temperature and the colloidal crud in the primary coolant. A realistic and kinetic model has been used to investigate the behavior of activated colloidal crud in the primary coolant and steam generator that solves the pump speed analytically. The analytic solution of the non-dimensional flow rate has been determined by the energy ratio β. The kinetic energy of the coolant fluid and the kinetic energy stored in the rotating parts of a pump are two essential parameters in the form of β. Under normal operation, the pump's speed and moment of inertia are constant. However, in a coastdown situation, kinetic damping in the interval has been implemented. A dynamic model ACCP-SMART has been developed for System Integrated Modular and Advanced Reactor (SMART) to investigate the corrosion due to activated colloidal crud. The Fickian diffusion model has been implemented as the reference corrosion model for the constituent component of the primary loop of the SMART reactor. The activated colloidal crud activity in the primary coolant and steam generator of the SMART reactor has been studied for different equilibrium corrosion rates, linear increase in corrosion rate, and dynamic RCP coastdown situation energy ratio b. The coolant specific activity of SMART reactor equilibrium corrosion (4.0 mg s-1) has been found 9.63×10-3 µCi cm-3, 3.53×10-3 µC cm-3, 2.39×10-2 µC cm-3, 8.10×10-3 µC cm-3, 6.77× 10-3 µC cm-3, 4.95×10-4 µC cm-3, 1.19×10-3 µC cm-3, and 7.87×10-4 µC cm-3 for 24Na, 54Mn, 56Mn, 59Fe, 58Co, 60Co, 99Mo, and 51Cr which are 14.95%, 5.48%, 37.08%, 12.57%, 10.51%, 0.77%, 18.50%, and 0.12% respectively. For linear and exponential coastdown with a constant corrosion rate, the total coolant and steam generator activity approaches a higher saturation value than the normal values. The coolant and steam generator activity changes considerably with kinetic corrosion rate, equilibrium corrosion, growth of corrosion rate (ΔC/Δt), and RCP coastdown situations. The effect of the RCP coastdown on the specific activity of the steam generators is smeared by linearly rising corrosion rates, equilibrium corrosion, and rapid coasting down of the RCP. However, the time taken to reach the saturation activity is also influenced by the slope of corrosion rate, coastdown situation, equilibrium corrosion rate, and energy ratio β.

Optimization of 3D ResNet Depth for Domain Adaptation in Excavator Activity Recognition

  • Recent research on heavy equipment has been conducted for the purposes of enhanced safety, productivity improvement, and carbon neutrality at construction sites. A sensor-based approach is being explored to monitor the location and movements of heavy equipment in real time. However, it poses significant challenges in terms of time and cost as multiple sensors should be installed on numerous heavy equipment at construction sites. In addition, there is a limitation in identifying the collaboration or interference between two or more heavy equipment. In light of this, a vision-based deep learning approach is being actively conducted to effectively respond to various working conditions and dynamic environments. To enhance the performance of a vision-based activity recognition model, it is essential to secure a sufficient amount of training datasets (i.e., video datasets collected from actual construction sites). However, due to safety and security issues at construction sites, there are limitations in adequately collecting training dataset under various situations and environmental conditions. In addition, the videos feature a sequence of multiple activities of heavy equipment, making it challenging to clearly distinguish the boundaries between preceding and subsequent activities. To address these challenges, this study proposed a domain adaptation in vision-based transfer learning for automated excavator activity recognition utilizing 3D ResNet (residual deep neural network). Particularly, this study aimed to identify the optimal depth of 3D ResNet (i.e., the number of layers of the feature extractor) suitable for domain adaptation via fine-tuning process. To achieve this, this study sought to evaluate the activity recognition performance of five 3D ResNet models with 18, 34, 50, 101, and 152 layers, which used two consecutive videos with multiple activities (5 mins, 33 secs and 10 mins, 6 secs) collected from actual construction sites. First, pretrained weights from large-scale datasets (i.e., Kinetic-700 and Moment in Time (MiT)) in other domains (e.g., humans, animals, natural phenomena) were utilized. Second, five 3D ResNet models were fine-tuned using a customized dataset (14,185 clips, 60,606 secs). As an evaluation index for activity recognition model, the F1 score showed 0.881, 0.689, 0.74, 0.684, and 0.569 for the five 3D ResNet models, with the 18-layer model performing the best. This result indicated that the activity recognition models with fewer layers could be advantageous in deriving the optimal weights for the target domain (i.e., excavator activities) when fine-tuning with a limited dataset. Consequently, this study identified the optimal depth of 3D ResNet that can maintain a reliable performance in dynamic and complex construction sites, even with a limited dataset. The proposed approach is expected to contribute to the development of decision-support systems capable of systematically managing enhanced safety, productivity improvement, and carbon neutrality in the construction industry.

A Study on Yulgok School Scholars' Theory to Study "Daehak(大學, Great Learning)"-Focusing on Horon(湖論) and Nakron(洛論) Scholars' Opinions of Bunyeom(浮念) and Pyeonnyeom(偏念) (율곡학파 학자들의 『대학』 공부론 연구- 부념(浮念)과 편념(偏念)에 관한 호론과 낙론 학자들의 견해를 중심으로 -)

  • In this thesis, based on Yulgok's theory to study "Daehak", it was examined how scholars of Horn and Nakron developed the theory to study "Daehak" regarding Bunyeom and Pyeonnyeom in the context of the history of ideas. The scholars of Horon and Nakron developed Yulgok's theory to study "Daehak" arguing that one could fully recover a saint's mind only after studying Seongeui(誠意, sincerity) to get rid of Aknyeom(惡念, an evil intention), Jeongsim(正心, an upright heart) to control Bunyeom, and Susin(修身, moral training) to control study and Pyeonnyeom. Yet, as scholars of Nakron criticized Horon scholars' argument considering the study of Jeongsim to control Bunyeom as Jeongsi(靜時, calm time), the controversy over the theory to study "Daehak" developed. The scholars of Horon generally insisted that because the method of Seongchal(省察, introspection) suggested in "Jeongsimjang(正心章, Chapter of Upright Heart)" of "Daehak" was not going into Dongsi(動時, dynamic time) and fathoming with Saryeo(思慮, consideration), but releasing it at the very moment of catching the indication of four troubles relevant to Bunyeom, the study on Jeongsim in "Daehak" should be the study of Jeongsi(靜時, calm time) for Jonyang(存養, developing good nature) of the main part of mind. On the other hand, the scholars of Nakron mostly contended that because Sim(心, mind) discussed in "Jeongsimjang" of "Daehak" referred to the whole mind and was not limited to Mibalsim(未發心, mind not manifested yet) of Jeongsi(靜時, calm time), the study on Jeongsim should include Dongjeong(動靜, movements). Yulgok once commented on Lee Yeon-pyeong(李延平)'s study on Mi-bal-che-in(未發體 認) in the same context of the study methods of release at the very moment of light reflection(輕輕照管·輕輕放退). In this respect, study on Jeongsim to control Bunyeom can be separated and belong to the study on Mibal of Jeongsi(靜時, calm time) as the scholars of Horon did. On the other hand, from the aspect that regarding the study on Jeongsim, Yulgok discussed both Jonyang(存養, developing good nature) and Seongchal(省察, introspection) with Mibal(未發, not manifested) and Yibal(已發, already manifested) together, it seems to have no problem to think of Jeongsim as the study including Dongjeong(動靜, movements). There were no different opinions between the scholars of Horon and those of Nakron regarding that there was study of Jeongsi(靜時, calm time) in "Daehak", too. However, while the scholars of Horon usually understood the study of Jeongsim in "Daehak" itself as the study of Mibal in "Jungyong", some scholars of Nakron thought that even though the study of Jeongsim of "Daehak" corresponded to Dongsi(動時, dynamic time), it included the study on Mibal because of the logic of Che-yong-il-won(體用一源). It can be said that the discussion over the study of Jeongsim to control Bunyeom and the study of Susin to control Pyeonnyeom were not limited to the proposal of the methodology to just control Bunyeom and Pyeonnyeom, but developed into the understanding of "Daehak" and "Jungyong" as one system of study.

Design and simulation of hydraulic system for launch vehicle holding device (우주발사체 지상고정장치 유압시스템 설계 및 해석)

  • The responsibility of the vehicle holding device (VHD) is to hold the launch vehicle while it is stayed on launch pad and release the holding mechanism to allow a lift-off of launch vehicle at a moment of lift-off. During a release of the holding mechanism, in order to prevent the Ka doing a doing a doing mode which is vertical oscillation of entire liquid propellant and very severe for vehicle structure, gradual release of holding force is required. Also, a release operation of all 4 VHD should be synchronized very precisely. In this study, to comply the "gradual release and synchronized operation requirement", concept of VHD hydraulic system using an accumulator, pyro valve and orifice to control speed of hydraulic cylinder is proposed instead of using complicated hydraulic components. Then through multi-body dynamic analysis and computational hydraulic analysis, a size of orifice to meet a target speed of hydraulic cylinder is calculated. Through this study, simple and reliable VHD hydraulic system complying requirements is designed.

Effect of Freeze-Thaw Cycles after Cracking Damage on the Flexural Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Beams (균열손상 후 동결융해를 경험한 철근콘크리트 보의 휨거동)

  • The flexural behaviors of two types of beam members exposed to freeze-thaw cycles were evaluated. This study aims to examine the effect of freeze-thaw cycles on the behavior characteristics of reinforced concrete (RC) beams. For the purpose, a part of the beam specimens were damaged until yielding of tension reinforcement was reached, before they were exposed to 150 and 300 cycles of freeze-thaw. Cyclic tests, as well as monotonic tests, were conducted to evaluate the stiffness degradation characteristics when same cycle is repeated. The material tests showed that relative dynamic modulus of concrete exposed to 300 cycles of freeze-thaw moderately decreased to 86.8% of normal concrete, indicating that concrete used in this study has good durability against freeze and thaw damage. The results of monotonic tests showed reduction of flexural strength, ductility and stiffness of the beam specimens exposed to freeze-thaw cycles compared with those of the control speciments. In particular, BDF13 specimens, which had been subjected to artificial cracking damage, did not showed enough flexural strength to satisfy nominal moment required by current concrete structure design code. In the monotonic tests results, BF75 specimens exposed to freeze-thaw cycles showed 10% or more cyclic stiffness degradation. Therefore, it was thought that deformation of concrete in compression have to be considered in design process of members under cyclic load, such as seismic device.

An Adaptive Contention Windows Adjustment Scheme Based on the Access Category for OnBord-Unit in IEEE 802.11p (IEEE 802.11p에서 차량단말기간에 혼잡상황 해결을 위한 동적 충돌 윈도우 향상 기법)

  • The study aims at offering a solution to the problems of transmission delay and data throughput decrease as the number of contending On-Board Units (OBU) increases by applying CSMA medium access control protocol based upon IEEE 802.11p. In a competition-based medium, contention probability becomes high as OBU increases. In order to improve the performance of this medium access layer, the author proposes EDCA which a adaptive adjustment of the Contention Windows (CW) considering traffic density and data type. EDCA applies fixed values of Minimum Contention Window (CWmin) and Maximum Contention Window (CWmax) for each of four kinds of Access Categories (AC) for channel-specific service differentiation. EDCA does not guarantee the channel-specific features and network state whereas it guarantees inter-AC differentiation by classifying into traffic features. Thus it is not possible to actively respond to a contention caused by network congestion occurring in a short moment in channel. As a solution, CWminAS(CWmin Adaptation Scheme) and ACATICT(Adaptive Contention window Adjustment Technique based on Individual Class Traffic) are proposed as active CW control techniques. In previous researches, the contention probabilities for each value of AC were not examined or a single channel based AC value was considered. And the channel-specific demands of IEEE 802.11p and the corresponding contention probabilities were not reflected in the studies. The study considers the collision number of a previous service section and the current network congestion proposes a dynamic control technique ACCW(Adaptive Control of Contention windows in considering the WAVE situation) for CW of the next channel.

Structural Analysis of a Suction Pad for a Removable Bike Carrier using Computational and Experimental Methods (탈착식 자전거 캐리어용 흡착 패드의 실험 및 전산적 방법을 활용한 구조해석)

  • As the suction pad-supporting bike carrier attached to a car may be subject to an excessive dynamic load due to random vibrations and centrifugal forces during driving, its structural safety is of great concern. To examine this, the finite-element method with a fluid-structure interaction should be used because the pressure on the pad bottom is changed in real time according to the fluctuations of the force or the moment applied on the pad. This method, however, has high computing costs in terms of modeling efforts and software expense. Moreover, the accuracy of computation is not easily guaranteed. Therefore, a new method combining the experiment and computation is proposed in this paper: the bottom pressure and contact area of the pad under varying loads was measured in real time and the acquired data are then used in the nonlinear elastic finite-element calculations. The computational and experimental results obtained with the product under development showed that the safety margin of the pad under the axial loading is relatively sufficient, whereas with an excessive rotational loading, the pad is vulnerable to separation or a local surface damage; hence, the safety margin may not be secured. The predicted contact behavior under the variation of the magnitude and type of the loading were in good agreement with the one from the experiment. The proposed analysis method in this study could be used in the design of similar vacuum pad systems.
