  • A permanent-magnet-assisted switched reluctance motor (SRM) having small excitation poles, where phase coils are concentrically wound on the poles and thin permanent magnets are inserted inside the poles, is proposed in this paper. The insertion of permanent magnets into the stator excitation poles has a significant influence on positive torque improvement leading to a boost in efficiency. Three key design parameters such as the thickness of permanent magnets, space between two adjacent permanent magnets, and the width of stator excitation poles are determined during a design procedure in terms of the enhancement of positive torque. Step-by-step design modification and a comparison between the proposed permanent-magnet-assisted SRM and no-permanent-magnet SRM have been conducted by means of static torque comparison along with dynamic performance. The first prototype from steel laminations up to its physical assembly has been constructed.

  • The developed concept of smart flow control based on turbulence scale modification was applied to control a flow around a circular cylinder. The concept was realized using arrays of vortex-generators regularly spaced along a cylinder generatrix with a given step. Mechanical and thermal vortex-generators were tested, the latter having been based on the localized surface heating or plasma discharges initiated with microwave radiation near the surface. Thus depending on a particular engineering solution, flow transport properties could be modified in passive or active ways. Matched numerical and experimental investigations showed a possibility to delay flow separation and, accordingly, to improve the aerodynamic performance of blunt bodies.

  • Control of a biped robot which has compliant ankle joints is dealt in this paper. Simulated version of a human ankle joint is built using springs and mechanical constraints, which gives a flexibility of joint and compliance against the touching ground. The biped robot with compliant ankle joints proposed here gives a good contact between its sole and the ground and makes foot landing soft. As a result, installing force sensors for measuring the center of gravity of the biped becomes easier. A motor to drive an ankle joint is not needed which makes legs light. However, the control problem becomes more difficult because the torque of the ankle joint to put the biped in a desired walking gait cannot be provided from the compliant ankle joint. To solve this problem, we proposed a dynamic gait modification method by adjusting the position of a hip joint. Simulation results for the mathematical model of the SD-2 biped in the Ohio State University are given to show the validity of the proposed controller.

  • Spray coating is a versatile surface modification technology in which coating is built-up based on the successive deposition of micron-scaled particles. Depending on the coating materials, the coatings can meet the required mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and other properties of base materials. Spraying processes are mainly classified into thermal and kinetic spraying according to their bonding mechanism and deposition characteristics. Specifically, thermal spraying process can be further classified into many categories based on the design and mechanism of the process, such as frame spraying, arc spraying, atmospheric plasma spraying (APS), and high velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) spraying, etc. Kinetic spraying or cold gas dynamic spraying is a newly emerging coating technique which is low-temperature and high-pressure coating process. In this paper, overall view of thermal and kinetic spray coating technologies is discussed in terms of fundamentals and industrial applications. The technological characteristics and bonding mechanism of each process are introduced. Deposition behavior and properties of technologically remarkable materials are reviewed. Furthermore, industrial applications of spray coating technology and its potentials are prospected.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of application of microwave energy for the fabrication of polymer/clay nanocomposite. APES/Clay nanocomposites were prepared at 13$0^{\circ}C$ for 30min with various content of clay by melt-intercalation method under classical and microwave heating source. APES/Clay samples were characterized by the means of X-ray diffractometry(XRD), thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA), and rheometric dynamic analysis(RDA). It was found that intercalated or exfoliated state was obtained in the samples according to the condition of organic modification, clay content, and heating source.

  • This paper presents an approach to self-tuning PI control of dynamic plants, based on fuzzy logic application. A fuzzy logic composed of linguistic conditional statements is employed by defining the relations of input-output variables of the controller. In the synthesis of a fuzzy logic controller, one of the most difficult problem is the selection of linguistic control rules and parameters. To overcome this difficulty, self-tuning fuzzy PI controller (STFPIC) with a hierarchical structure in which the fuzzy PI controller is assigned as the lower level and the rule modification and parameter adjustment as the higher level. The rules and parameters are generated by the adjustment of membership function through performance index(PE). In this paper, the algorithm for of the controller performance is estimated by means of computer simulation.

  • The emerging wireless networks require the design of new authentication protocols due to their dynamic nature and vulnerable-to-attack structure. Recently, Wu and others proposed a wireless authentication protocol which is claimed to be an improvement of the authentication protocol proposed by Lee and others which provides user anonymity. In this letter, we show that these protocols have a common flaw and that these protocols fail to provide user anonymity. We also propose a modification method to solve this problem.

  • Air wiping technique is widely used because of easy and efficient coating control in present CGL The coating weight is controlled by nozzle header pressure. strip line speed, and the distance between strip and nozzle. Coating defects are resulted from the unbalance of these control factors and the inaccuracy of coating equipments. We investigates the main cause of coating defects, such as edge overcoating and coating deviation through various experiments. It is found that the edge overcoating is mainly come from nozzle lip type, and the coating deviation is caused by the unbalance of dynamic pressure.

  • One fo the major problems in speech recognition is the mismatch between training and testing environments. Recently, SNR normalization technique, which normalizes the dynamic range of frequency channels in mel-scaled filterbank, was proposed[1]. While it showed improved robustness against additive noise, it requires a reliable speech detection mechanism and several adaptation parameters to be optimized. In this paper, we propose a modified SNR normalization technique. In this technique, we take simply the maximum of filterbank output and predetermined masking constant for each frequency band. According to the speaker-independent isolated word recognition in car noise environments, proposed modification yields better recognition performance that the original SNR normalization method, with rather reduced complexity.

  • When the vibration troubles occur on the ship structure during the sea trial, the rectification work is very restricted because of in-situ limitation. Usually the finite element method is used to improve vibration characteristics of the structure, but it takes lots of time and effort in modeling the structure and adjusting the finite element model in order to consider appropriate boundary conditions of a complex ship structure. Therefore, experimental methods have been in general suggested to obtain proper countermeasures without time-consuming in modeling. In this paper, FRF(frequency response function) synthesis method is applied to estimate natural frequency of the modified ship structure, which is obtained from experimental and numerical methods.
