  • When structural design of a tall building is conducted, reduction of wind-induced lateral displacement is one of the most important problem. For this purpose, additional dampers and vibration control devices are generally considered. In this process, control performance of additional devices are usually investigated for optimal design without variation of characteristics of a structure. In this study, multi-objective integrated optimization of structure-smart control device is conducted and possibility of reduction of structural resources of a tall building with additional smart damping device has been investigated. To this end, a 60-story diagrid building structure is used as an example structure and artificial wind loads are used for evaluation of wind-induced responses. An MR damper is added to the conventional TMD to develop a smart TMD. Because dynamic responses and the amount of structural material and additional smart damping devices are required to be reduced, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is employed in this study. After numerical simulation, various optimal designs that can satisfy control performance requirement can be obtained by appropriately reducing the amount of structural material and additional smart damping device.

  • The purpose of this study is to verify the transfer function of input acceleration and output control force by linearizing a velocity-dependent damping term of Liquid Column Vibration Absorber (LCVA). Analytical and experimental research is conducted to identify natural frequency, damping ratio and participated mass ratio of LCVA with various section ratios of vertical and horizontal areas. Findings obtained experimentally by the shaking table test are compared with analytical findings using optimization technique with constraints. The results indicate that the level of liquid and section ratio of LCVA affect the characteristics of damping ratio and mass ratio. Damping and mass ratio increase as the section of vertical column of LCVA decreases, due to turbulence in the elbow of LCVA.

  • Wireless mesh network technology with transmission speeds similar to wired and wireless technology means to build, compared with wired networks, building a more efficient network to provide convenience and flexibility. The wireless mesh network router nodes in the energy impact of the mobility is less constrained and has fewer features entail. However, the characteristics of various kinds due to network configuration settings and the choice of multiple paths that can occur when the system overhead and there are many details that must be considered. Therefore, according to the characteristics of these network routing technology that is reflected in the design and optimization of the network is worth noting. In this paper, a multi-path setting can be raised in order to respond effectively to the problem of the router node data loss and bandwidth according to traffic conditions and links to elements of the hop count evaluation by using a genetic algorithm as a workaround for dynamic routing the routing metric for wireless mesh network scheme is proposed.

  • In this paper, we propose an optimal interest point extraction method to support shape-base image classification and indexing for image database by applying a dynamic threshold that reflects the characteristics of the shape contour. The threshold is determined dynamically by comparing the contour length ratio of the original shape and the approximated polygon while the algorithm is running. Because our algorithm considers the characteristics of the shape contour, it can minimize the number of interest points. For n points of the contour, the proposed algorithm has O(nlogn) computational cost on an average to extract the number of m optimal interest points. Experiments were performed on the 70 synthetic shapes of 7 different contour types and 1100 fish shapes. It shows the average optimization ratio up to 0.92 and has 14% improvement, compared to the fixed threshold method. The shape features extracted from our proposed method can be used for shape-based image classification, indexing, and similarity search via normalization.

  • Sewerage Treatment Plants(STPs) are complexes systems in which a range of physical, chemical and biological processes occur. Since Activated Sludge Model(ASM) No.1 was published, a number of new mathematical models for simulating biological processes have been developed. However, these models have disadvantages in cost and simplicity due to the laboriousness and tediousness of their procedures. One of the major difficulties of these mathematical model based tools is that the field-operators mostly don't have the time or the computer-science skills to handle there models, so it mainly remains on experts or special engineers. In order to solve these situations and help the field-operators, the $KM^2BM$(K-water & More-M Mass Balance Model) based on the dynamic-mass balance model was developed. This paper presents $KM^2BM$ as a simulation tools for STPs design and optimization. This model considers the most important microbial behavioral processes taking place in a STPs to maximize potential applicability without increasing neither model parameter estimation nor wastewater characterization efforts.

  • In this study, asphalt paving filler, which satisfies the KS standards, were prepared from industrial by-products, such as fly ash generated from thermal power plants, cogeneration ash generated from cogeneration plants, and desulfurized gypsum generated from the flue-gas desulfurization process. The properties of the prepared mixed filler and the existing limestone filler were compared through laboratory tests for preparing asphalt mixture using each filler. In addition, asphalt pavement field tests were conducted using the limestone filler and mixed filler. The dynamic stability, Marshall stability, tensile strength ratio, saturation, porosity, and flow value of the asphalt mixtures used in the field test were evaluated, as was done in the laboratory test. The laboratory and field construction test results revealed outstanding tensile strength ratio, Marshall stability and dynamic stability when using the prepared filler than for the existing limestone filler. Through optimization of the mixing design, the possibility of developing fillers, which the characteristics of the existing limestone filler, was confirmed.

  • In this study, the VCB(Vacuum Circuit Breaker) has been developed using the Recurdyn that is widely used on multibody dynamics analysis. The VCB consists of three main circuits with the VI(Vacuum Interrupter) and the main frame with the operating mechanism. This analytic model is validated by comparing the simulation results and the experimental results. Generally, in order to reliably cut off the breaking current, the opening speed of the VCB after contact separation has to be a 0.9~1.1m/s. Therefore, the study of the design parameters of the VCB is needed. To improve the opening velocity, Taguchi design method is applied to optimize the design parameters of a VCB with a lot of linkages. In addition, to evaluate the improvement of the operating characteristics, the simulation results are compared with the Recurdyn and experimental results with improved prototype sample.

  • Base-isolation of a primary structure generally decrete the seismic response of its own and the secondary structure. It may cause an adverse effect on the seismic response of secondary system when the system is submerged and subject to a considerable hydrodynamic effect. In this paper, it is shown how, and how much, the base isolation of the primary structure can affect the secondary system response in extreme cases through dynamic analysis of a simplified coupled model for a submerged secondary system and a base-isolated primary structure. As an aseismatic design approach to reduce the response of the submerged system, optimization of the fluid gap, which controls the hydrodynamic mass effect, is performed. As an alternative approach in case where the control of fluid gap is unrealistic, application of base isolation to the submerged system is suggested. Effectiveness of various combinations of the primary base and secondary base isolations are compared.

  • Elliptical bearings are widely used for large steam turbines owing to their excellent load carrying capacity and good dynamic stability. Power loss in bearings is an extremely important parameter, especially for high turbine capacities. Optimization of operation conditions and design variables such as bearing clearance and bearing length can reduce the power loss in elliptical bearings. Although changes in the oil supply method have served to increase the efficiency of the tilting pad journal bearing, it has not explicitly improved elliptical bearings. In this study, we verify the static characteristics of an elliptical bearing by changing the direction of oil supply. We evaluate the bearing power loss and bearing metal temperature, and compare the bearing performance and reliability in different test cases. The direction of oil supply is $90^{\circ}$ (9 o'clock) and $270^{\circ}$ (3 o'clock) when the rotor rotates in a counterclockwise direction. We use an elliptical bearing with an inner diameter and active length of 220.30 and 110.00 mm, respectively. Bearing power loss and bearing metal temperatures are measured and evaluated by rotor rotational speed, oil flow rate, and bearing load. The results reveal a 20 reduction in the power loss when the direction of oil supply is 90. Furthermore, the oil film on the upper part of the bearing has a high temperature when the direction of oil supply is $90^{\circ}$. In contrast, when the direction of oil supply is $270^{\circ}$, the oil film on the upper part of the bearing is relatively cold.

  • Although there has been substantial research on the squeal noise for the automotive brake system, robust design issues with respect to control factors equivalent to design variables in optimization, noise factors due to system uncertainties, and signal factors designed to accommodate a user-adjustable setting still need to be addressed. For the purpose, the robust design applied to the disk brake system has been investigated by DOE (Design of Experiments) based Taguchi analysis with dynamic characteristics. The specific goal of this methodology is to identify a design with linear signal-response relationship, and variability minimization. The finite element models of the disk brake assembly have been constructed, and the squeal noise problems have been solved by complex eigenvalue analysis. As the practical robust design to reduce the brake squeal noise, material properties of pad, disk, and backplate, thickness and geometry of pad are selected as control factors, material properties of pad and disk, and the contact stiffness have been considered as noise factors, and friction coefficient between pad and disk is chosen as a signal factor. Through the DOE based robust design, the signal-to-noise ratio and the sensitivity for each orthogonal array experiment have been analyzed. Also, it has been proved that the proposed robust design is effective and adequate to reduce the brake squeal noise.
