Guyed masts subjected to turbulent winds exhibit complex vibrations featuring many vibration modes, each of which contributes to various structural responses in differing degrees. This dynamic behaviour is further complicated by nonlinear guy cable properties. While previous studies have indicated that conventional frequency domain methods can reliably reproduce load effects within the mast, the system linearization required to perform such an analysis makes it difficult to relate these results directly to corresponding guy forces. As a result, the estimation of peak load effects arising jointly from the structural action of the mast and guys, such as leg loads produced as a result of guy reactions and mast bending moments, is uncertain. A numerical study was therefore undertaken to study peak load effects in a 295 m tall guyed mast acted on by simulated turbulent wind. Responses calculated explicitly from nonlinear time domain finite element analyses were compared with approximate methods in the frequency domain for estimating peak values of selected responses, including guy tension, mast axial loads and mast leg loads. It was found that these peak dynamic load effects could be accurately estimated from frequency domain analysis results by employing simple, slightly conservative assumptions regarding the correlation of related effects.

It is reasonable to assume that reinforced concrete (RC) structures enter the nonlinear range of response during a severe ground motion. Numerical analysis to predict the behaviour therefore must allow for the presence of nonlinear deformations if an accurate estimate of seismic response is aimed. Among the factors contributing to inelastic deformations, the influence of the degradation of the bond slip phenomenon is important. Any rebar slip generates an additional rotation at the end regions of structural members which are not accounted for in a conventional analysis. Although these deformations could affect the seismic response of RC structures considerably, they are often neglected due to the unavailability of suitable models. In this paper, the seismic response of two types of RC structures, designed according to the Iranian concrete code (ABA) and the Iranian seismic code (2800), are evaluated using nonlinear dynamic and static analyses. The investigation is performed using nonlinear dynamic and static pushover analysis considering the deformations due to anchorage slip. The nonlinear analysis results confirm that bond slip significantly influences the seismic behavior of RC structure leading to an increase of lateral deformations by up to 30% depending on the height of building. The outcomes also identify important parameters affecting the extent of this influence.
In this study, the accuracy and reliability of fully nonlinear method against equivalent linear method for dynamic analysis of soil-structure interaction is investigated comparing the predicted results of both numerical procedures with the results of experimental shaking table tests. An enhanced numerical soil-structure model has been developed which treats the behaviour of the soil and the structure with equal rigour. The soil-structural model comprises a 15 storey structural model resting on a soft soil inside a laminar soil container. The structural model was analysed under three different conditions: (i) fixed base model performing conventional time history dynamic analysis, (ii) flexible base model (considering full soil-structure interaction) conducting equivalent linear dynamic analysis, and (iii) flexible base model performing fully nonlinear dynamic analysis. The results of the above mentioned three cases in terms of lateral storey deflections and inter-storey drifts are determined and compared with the experimental results of shaking table tests. Comparing the experimental results with the numerical analysis predictions, it is noted that equivalent linear method of dynamic analysis underestimates the inelastic seismic response of mid-rise moment resisting building frames resting on soft soils in comparison to the fully nonlinear dynamic analysis method. Thus, inelastic design procedure, using equivalent linear method, cannot adequately guarantee the structural safety for mid-rise building frames resting on soft soils. However, results obtained from the fully nonlinear method of analysis fit the experimental results reasonably well. Therefore, this method is recommended to be used by practicing engineers.

The analysis of dynamic behaviour of rotor system for the rolling piston type rotary compressor considering hydrodynamic force between motor rotor and stator is presented. In addition to considering other dynamic, loads such as large unbalance forces, gas force and bearing force, we consider the hydrodynamic force induced by the compressed fluid flow through the air gap between motor rotor and stator, and improve the analysis of vibration in rotary compressor. The Childs' method which based on Bulk-now and Hirs' turbulent lubrication model is used to calculate the rotordynamic coefficients due to hydrodynamic force of annular clearance in motor air gap.
In this paper, seismic energy response of inelastic steel structures under earthquake excitations is investigated. For this purpose, a numerical procedure based on nonlinear dynamic analysis is developed by considering material, geometric and connection nonlinearities. Material nonlinearity is modeled by the inversion of Ramberg-Osgood equation. Nonlinearity caused by the interaction between the axial force and bending moment is also defined considering stability functions, while the geometric nonlinearity caused by axial forces is described using geometric stiffness matrix. Cyclic behaviour of steel connections is taken into account by employing independent hardening model. Dynamic equation of motion is solved by Newmark's constant acceleration method in the time history domain. Energy response analysis of space frames is performed by using this proposed numerical method. Finally, for the first time, the distribution of the different energy types versus time at the duration of the earthquake ground motion is obtained where in addition error analysis for the numerical solutions is carried out and plotted depending on the relative error calculated as a function of energy balance versus time.
In this paper, a comparison of various random vibration and deterministic dynamic analyses of cable-stayed bridges subjected to asynchronous ground motion is presented. Different random vibration methods are included to determine the dynamic behaviour of a cable-stayed bridge for various ground motion wave velocities. As a numerical example the Jindo Bridge located in South Korea is chosen and a 413 DOF mathematical model is employed for this bridge. The results obtained from a spectral analysis approach are compared with those of two random vibration based response spectrum methods and a deterministic method. The analyses suggest that the structural responses usually show important amplifications depending on the decreasing ground motion wave velocities.

The main purpose of this study is to investigate the dynamic behaviour of containment building in nuclear power plant excited by aircraft impact loading using a lower order 8-node solid element. The yield and failure surfaces for concrete material model is formulated on the basis of Drucker-Prager yield criteria and are assumed to be varied by taking account of the visco-plastic energy dissipation. The standard 8-node solid element has prone to exhibit the element deficiencies and the so-called B bar method proposed by Hughes is therefore adopted in this study. The implicit Newmark method is adopted to ensure the numerical stability during the analysis. Finally, the effect of different levels of cracking strain and several types of aircraft loading are examined on the dynamic behaviour of containment building and the results are quantitatively summarized as a future benchmark.
A Two Mobilized-Plane Model is proposed for monotonic and cyclic soil response including liquefaction. This model is based on two mobilized planes: a plane of maximum shear stress, which rotates, and a horizontal plane which is spatially fixed. By controlling two mobilized planes, the model can simulate the principal stress rotation effect associated with simple shear from different $K_0$ states. The proposed model gives a similar skeleton behaviour for soils having the same mean stress, regardless of $K_0$ conditions as observed in laboratory tests. The soil skeleton behaviour observed in cyclic drained simple shear tests, including compaction during unloading and dilation at large strain is captured in the model. Undrained monotonic and cyclic response is predicted by imposing the volumetric constraint of the water on the drained or skeleton behaviour. This constitutive model is incorporated into the dynamic coupled stress-flow finite difference program of FLAC (Fast Lagrangian Analysis of Continua). The model was first calibrated with drained simple shear tests on Fraser River sand, and verified by comparing predicted and measured undrained behaviour of Fraser River sand using the same input parameters.
A parametric study of the factors controlling static and dynamic denting, as well as local stiffness, has been made on simplified panels of different sizes, curvatures, thicknesses and strengths. Analyses have been performed using the finite element method to predict dent resistance and panel stiffness. A parametric approach is used with finite element models of simplified panels. Two sizes of panels with square plan dimensions and a wide range of curvatures are analysed for several combinations of material thickness and strength, all representative of auto-motive closure panels. Analysis was performed using the implicit finite element code, LS-NIKE, and the explicit dynamic code, LS-DYNA for the static and dynamic cases, respectively. Panel dent resistance and stiffness behaviour are shown to be complex phenomena and strongly interrelated. Factors favouring improved dent resistance include increased yield strength and panel thickness. Panel stiffness also increases with thickness and with higher curvatures but decreases with size and very low curvatures. Conditions for best dynamic and static dent performance are shown to be inherently in conflict ; that is, panels with low stiffness tend to perform well under impact loading but demonstrate inferior static dent performance. Stiffer panels are prone to larger dynamic dents due to higher contact forces but exhibit good static performance through increased resistance to oil canning.
The seismic safety of concrete dams is one of the important problems in the engineering due to the vast socio-economic disasters which may be caused by collapse of these infrastructures. The accuracy of the risk evaluation associated with these existing dams as well as the efficient design of future dams is highly dependent on a proper understanding of their behaviour due to earthquakes. This paper develops an anisotropic damage model for arch dam under strong earthquakes. The modified Drucker-Prager criterion is adopted as the failure criteria of the dynamic damage evolution of concrete. Some process fields and other necessary information for the safety evaluation are obtained. The numerical results show that the seismic behaviour of concrete dams can be satisfactorily predicted.
