  • We used the Braun-Blanquet method to study coastal dune vegetation of South Korea. Coastal vegetation was monitored in thirty sites from April 2004 to September 2005. Seventeen plant communities were classified into five groups as follows: A. Two associations of herbaceous sand dune plants in Salsoletea komarovii Ohba, Miyawaki et Tx. 1973 (Calystegia soldanella community, Lathyrus japonicus-Calystegia soldanella community), B. Twelve associations of herbaceous perennial sand dune plants in Glehnietea littoralis Ohba, Miyawaki et Tx. 1973 (Carex pumila community, Elymus mollis community, Vitex rotundifolia-Elymus mollis community, Ixeris repens community, Elymus mollis-Ixeris repens community, Lathyrus japonicus community, Messershmidia sibirica community, Glehnia littoralis community, Carex kobomugi community, Calystegia solda-nella-Carex kobomugi community, Ishaemum anthephoroides community, Zoysia macrostachya community), C. One association of shrubby perennial sand dune plant in Viticetea rotundifoliae Ohba, Miyawaki et Tx. 1973 (Vitex rotundifolia community), D. One association of shrubby perennial sand dune plant in Rosetea multiflorae Ohba, Miyawaki et Tx. 1973 (Rosa rugosa community), E. The naturalized community (Diodia teres community).

  • The Okjukdong dune in Daecheong Island attracts national attention because of its unique landscape that is not covered by vegetation. However, there has been little knowledge on the timing of the dune formation, associated wind regime, and conservational strategies. In this study, we used OSL dating and grain size analyses to reveal the history of the dune development. In addition, we analyzed the wind regime in the dunefield which is surrounded by artificial coastal forest. The fine sand at Okjukdong underlain by a colluvial gravel layer indicates that the dune has been developed since at least 5 ka. Aeolian sands were found to be deposited around 700 years ago. The dunefield appears to have been severely eroded 30~60 years ago. The dune landscape has been destroyed after constructing a windbreak forest around the dunefield. The sand seems to be moving south and north with the season.

  • This study is to see the recovery effect of the Deltacon method by investigating the amount of sand deposition, the topographical cross section and the vegetation structure; and to derive the effective recovery method of coastal erosion area. The target areas of this study include Jinri coastal dune, Bajireum coastal dune and Seopori coastal dune in Deokjeok-do Island, Ongjin-gun, Incheon. In order to assess the current status of the coastal erosion area recovery, the soil profile structure map was prepared on the site and then the amount of sand deposition within 1m was calculated indoors. The vegetation recovery status of the costal erosion area was assessed via the analyses of the topographical profile structure and the plant community structure, and we aim to derive the effective recovery plan of the Deltacon method with the results. With the Deltacon method, structures with ductile material, special non-woven fabric bags filled with soil and vegetation can be performed therefore the structuralstability and prevention of sand erosion can be achieved. The amounts of sand deposition of Bajireum coastal dune, Seopori costal dune and Jinri costal dune were calculated $0.98{\sim}2.54m^3$, $1.02{\sim}2.96m^3$, and $0.27{\sim}0.75m^3$, respectively, and it is considered that the costal erosion recovery is actively performed for Bajireum costal dune and Seopori costal dune. The analysis results of vegetation structures by topography show that the installation of the send collecting net in steep areas has been highly effective and the Deltacon-constructed target areas have been restored to vegetation and the costal dune, which is similar to the natural dune. The investigation of the plant community structure in Deokjeok-do Island costal dune, Incheon displayed similar research results of the existing costal dune flora and confirmed the emergence of Lathyrus japonicus, Carex kobomugi, Elymus mollis, Vitex rotundifolia, and Calystegia soldanella and others. In order to carry out further effective recovery with the Deltacon method, improvements to rootage of herbaceous vegetation are needed in areas without foredune herbaceous vegetation, and continuos maintenance & management monitoring of connected windbreak forest to costal dunes are also necessary.

  • The results of this research on the diversity, zonation of vegetation and micro-topography by TWINSPAN classification and DECORANA ordination, executed with Sinduri coastal dunes of Korea, are as follows: The vegetation and micro-topography of coastal dunes formed a noticeably clear zonation structure. The beach in the direction of the coastline saw a lot of appearance of Salsola komarovi and the primary dune was dominated by Elymus mollis. Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii and Carex pumila formed a colony at flat area of the sand hills and Calamagrostis epigeios was widely distributed at the wet slack. The secondary dune was dominated mostly by Ischaemum anthephoroides and Imperata cylindrica var. koenigii, and it showed an aspect of the distribution of Vitex rotundifolia and Rosa rugosa. while the hinterland hillside in the direction of inland was dominated by Robinia pseudo-acacia and Pinus thunbergii. However, Carex kobomugi, known as the pioneer species of the coastline-bound areas at the coastal dune, dominantly occupied the secondary dune of the rear side and continentally-inclined Miscanthus sinensi and Oenothera biennis of naturalized plant were irregularly spread over the whole of the coastal dune, so the stabilization of micro-topography seemed to be uncertain. Particularly, Miscanthus sinensis was predicted to be changed into dominant species of the primary dune, and secondary dune and slack having a commonly high species gathering inclination with the more progress of stabilization of the coastal dune. The expansion of sand hill wetlands and roads located between the primary dune and secondary dune was judged to have an effect on the zonation structure of plant distribution.

  • Coastal landforms such as sand beach and coastal sand dune are changing dynamically, and the research about them is being conducted. Conventionally the leveling method has been applied to measuring heights of dynamic morphological surface in coastal landforms. We applied the photograrmmetric method which was not considered to measure the heights on coastal sand dune’s profile to calculating the heights of coastal sand dune; that is, the heights of unknown points on coastal sand dune’s profile was reckoned from the digital photographs’stereo pairs through bundle adjustment and backward transform of collinearity condition equation. we used six GCPs to perform bundle adjustment. After backward transform the error of heights between surveyed value and computed value was estimated around 10cm. In general, the pole is not adamantly fixed on the surface of coastal sand dune because of its softness, and then the disturbance of coastal sand dune adjoining surveyed area can be made in small area. Digital photogrammetry can solve the problem which conventional leveling method has, and be replaced it.

  • Sand-concrete is being researched for potential usage in construction in Saharan regions of Algeria, because of shortage in coarse aggregate resources. This research work deals with the effect of dune sand, available in huge quantities in these regions, on the properties of flowing sand-concrete (FSC) prepared with different proportions of dune and river sands. Mini-cone slump test, v-funnel flow-time test and viscosity measurements were used to characterize the behaviour of FSC in fresh state. The 28-day compressive strength was also determined. Test results show that an optimal content of dune sand, which makes satisfied fresh and hardened properties of FSC, is obtained. Moreover, the obtained flow index (constant b) calculated by the help of power-law viscosity model is successfully correlated to the experimental results of v-funnel flow time.

  • To find the best way to distinguish sand dunes from urban building and rural patches, textural analysis has been performed in Kimnyeong sand dune, Jeju. An aerial photo was re-sampled into one-meter. Homomorphic filters were applied to the original sub-scene and then high-pass filtered one. The entropy filtered one proves to be the best extraction method after high pass filtered-homomorphic filters in urban areas. The spectral values of sand dune area were similar to open land in rural area. In contrast, the texture values of sand dune area are more homogeneous than those of open land in rural area.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the land-use changes in the coastal areas using system dynamics modeling and to provide directions for effective management to maintain coastal dune areas. This research process consists of four steps: First, we built the basic model based on the causal loop diagram which was analyzed the land-use change of Sindu-ri Coastal Dune. Second, a time series land-use change map using Arc Map was established. Third, the validity of the basic model was tested. Finally, three simulations were performed for the cut over area($100,000m^2/y$, $150,000m^2/y$, $200,000m^2/y$) of windbreak for maintaining the coastal dune areas. Simulation of the basic model showed that the area of the coastal dune will be consistently decreased. Based on the simulation, if windbreak were cut down $150,000m^2/y$, windbreak area will be restored to the target area in 2019. This study has the limitation which the simulation is progressed with a limited variable: area. Therefore, the modeling of coastal dune should be reflected various variables in the further study.

  • Two surveys were conducted in January 2006 and September 2007 with multibeam echosounder to investigate the dune shape, migration rate, and bedload transport rate using dune-tracking method on an offshore sand ridge at southern Gyeonggi Bay. The migration rates of dunes range from 1.8 $myr^{-1}$) to 56.0 $myr^{-1}$), at the upper northwestern side of sand ridge towards the southwest direction and from the center of the sand ridge towards the northeast direction respectively. Large (i.e. length 10-100 m) dunes show faster migration (0.3-23.4 $myr^{-1}$) ) than very large (i.e. length > 100 m) dunes because larger dunes have required a larger volume of sediments to be displaced. The decreases in dimensions and migration rates of dunes from the center of sand ridge to the lower part of southeastern side on the sand ridge can be ascribed to the decrease of sandy sediments availability, tidal currents with depth, and the coarsening of surface sediments from the crest of the sand ridge to the trough. Bedload transport rates on the basis of migration rates and dune dimensions decrease from 74.5 $m^2yr^{-1}$) at C transect to 35.6 $m^2yr^{-1}$) at R-02 transect.

  • A sedimentation study of the Cheonripo intertidal beach sands and its related coastal dune sands, Cheonripo, Seosan Gun, Choongcheong Namdo, Korea has been carried out based on a series of several summer time field surveys. Each subenvironment in the Cheonripo coastal zone, that is, intertidal sand beach and coastal sand dune, could be differenciated in terms of textural parameters. The coastal dune sands are finer than the intertidal beach sands in mean grain size, and the sorting of dune sands is relatively poorer than that of intertidal beach sands. However, the skewness of intertidal beach and dune sands is commonly positive. Such textural parameters are characteristically differentiated on scatter diagrams. A series of megaripple bedform observations for 6 tidal cycle periods(August 13, 14 and 15, 1990) are interpreted to find out migration pattern of bedforms and its related sand migration. Such migration natures are shown on the tables and figures.
