  • Purpose: It is to develop an agricultural three-directional dumping vehicle that can help farmers reduce intensive labor when carrying heavy loads and for easy dumping. In addition, a novel mechanism was applied for controlling the direction of the tilting cargo box by using a single hydraulic cylinder and simple apparatus. The overturning safety was analyzed to provide safe-use ground slope region of the vehicle to be used at upland fields and orchards. Methods: The developed three-directional dumping vehicle was constructed using a cargo box, vehicle frame, driving components, lifting components, and controller. The novel mechanism of controlling the dumping direction involves the operation of two latching bars, which selectively release or collapse the connecting edge between the vehicle frame and cargo box. A multibody dynamics analysis software (RecurDynV8R5) was used to determine the safe-use ground slope area when tilting the cargo box at slopes. A computer analysis was conducted by increasing the ground slope while rotating the vehicle when the cargo box comprised loads of 300 and 500 kg and stacking heights of 40 and 80 cm, respectively. Results: The three-directional dumping vehicle was successfully manufactured, and the cargo box was tilted at $37^{\circ}$ and $35^{\circ}$ for dumping forward and sideways. The latching bars were manually and selectively collapsed with the vehicle frame to control the dumping direction. When forward dumping, the safe-use ground slope was over $20^{\circ}$ in all vehicle directions and loaded conditions. Conclusions: A three-directional dumping vehicle was developed to reduce labor-intensive work in the farming environment. The user can easily control the dumping direction by using the control panel. The vehicle was safe to be used in most of the Korean upland fields and orchards (area over 96%) for the forward dumping.

  • Reclamation of closed dumping grounds is a potential solution to solve land scarce problems. Traditional geotechnical investigations of closed dumping grounds face some problems, such as the emission of hazardous liquids and gases, and the lack of ground information due to the discontinuity between two boreholes. Thus, noninvasive and continuous investigation methods are needed to supplement traditional geotechnical investigations. In this paper, two types of geophysical investigation methods, Seismic Analysis of Surface Waves (SASW) and 2D Resistivity, were carried out to study noninvasive and continuous site investigations for dumping grounds. The two geophysical methods are able to profile the distribution of physical properties of the fill and original materials, by which the extent of the dumping ground can be found and some anomalies in the subsurface can be located. Boreholes were used to assist in locating the dumping material-ground interfaces. The results show that dumping material-ground interfaces obtained from the two geophysical methods are roughly consistent. Moreover, attempt is made in the paper to use the geophysical methods to classify the types of dumping materials. The results show that the classification of dumping materials using the geophysical methods follows the results of the manual sorting of the dumping materials from a borehole.

  • When earth structures such as dykes or embankments are constructed on very soft clay foundation, unexpectedly large deformations of earth structures as well as clay foundation are encountered during and after construction. The final constructed section is composed of a portion of embankment above the existing ground level and that which penetrated into the soft foundation soil. This study is aimed to correctly estimate the shape of earth structures which penetrate some depth into the soft clay foundation. In this study the methods to predict penetration depth and deformation shape of embankment section after dumping of construction material. Model tests were carried out to prove the developed theory and FEM analysis. And when the mat is added, reinforcement effect was markedly noticed.

  • Among many geophysical prospecting methods, GPR(Ground Penetration Radar) and electrical resistivity method have been applied to a open waste dumping landfill for measuring of the site area and depth. The surveying was limited to a boarder of the site and inside area because of the field situation. The data of GPR were recorded by 50MHz antenna, and dipole array was used for electrical resistivity survey in the same survey line for the integrated interpretation. The result of GPR clearly indicated the horizontal boarder of site. However, the data of GPR did not have enough to measure the depth of site clearly. The electrical resistivity method may show the effective information by integrated interpreation. These results coincided with results of the boring test. Therefore, a combination of GPR and electrical resistivity is a good method for surveying of suspective open waste dumping landfill area and it's depth.

  • This paper examined the changes in flow patterns due to a blockage of tidal currents in the sea areas between Incheon North Port and Yeomha Channel when it would be influenced by the construction of the Incheon North Port Yeongjongdo dredged soil dumping ground and Incheon Bay tidal power plant. The numerical simulation was performed for three cases: before and after constructing the Incheon North Port Yeongjongdo dredged soil dumping ground and after the construction of the sea-dyke on the east side of the Incheon Bay tidal power plant. The simulation results showed that the tidal directions and currents velocity were similar before and after the construction of the Yeongjongdo dredged soil dumping ground. After the construction of the East Sea-dyke of Incheon tide power plant, however, the tidal currents patterns changed significantly due to flow blockage toward Gyeonggi Bay. The main flow was formed in the north-south direction, and the tidal currents velocity increased slightly on the downstream areas (A,B,C) of Hodo, which is the entrance of the Ara Waterway. The tidal currents at the mouth(D) of Yeomha Channel decreased significantly. The tidal currents of the west side of Se-eodo and the east side of the sea-dyke were rotary currents. The results of this study will provide basic data for the environmental impact assessment and the operation of the Gyeongin Ara Waterway.

  • Recently, Korea's municipal wastewater treatment plants generated amount of wastewater sludge per day. However, ocean dumping of sewage sludge has been prohibited since 2012 by the London dumping convention and protocol and thus removal or treatment of wastewater sludge from field sites is an important issue on the ground site. The hydrothermal carbonization is one of attractive thermo-chemical method to upgrade sewage sludge to produce solid fuel with benefit method from the use of no chemical catalytic. Hydrothermal carbonization improved that the upgrading fuel properties and increased materials and energy recovery, which is conducted at temperatures ranging from 200 to $350^{\circ}C$ with a reaction time of 30 min. Hydrothermal carbonization increased the heating value though the increase of the carbon and fixed carbon content of solid fuel due to dehydration and decarboxylation reaction. Therefore, after the hydrothermal carbonization, the H/C and O/C ratios decreased because of the chemical conversion. Energy retention efficiency suggest that the optimum temperature of hydrothermal carbonization to produce more energy-rich solid fuel is approximately $200^{\circ}C$.

  • To investigate the causes of ground deformation around the Dogye coal waste depot in Samcheok city, Gangwon Province, we undertook a field survey and performed boring tests and a topographic analysis using maps compiled in various years. The results of boring tests and analyses of ground fractures indicate that the thickness of the soil layer ranges from 9 to 28.5 m and that ground deformation has occurred to the $240{\sim}250^{\circ}$ direction. The topographic analysis revealed that the topography of the site has changed continuously due to the dumping of coal waste. The causes of ground deformation, investigated by both field surveys and the topographic analysis, were the thick layer of soil at this site, the loading weight of coal waste, and the excavation at the lower part of the slope.

  • Steel slag has been considered as an industrial waste. A huge amount of slag is produced as a byproduct and the steel slag usually has been dumped in a landfill site. However the steel slag contains valuable resources such as iron, copper, manganese, and magnesium. Superconducting magnetic separation has been applied on recovery of the valuable resources from the steel slag and this process also has intended to reduce the waste to be dumped. Cryo-cooled Nb-Ti superconducting magnet with 100 mm bore and 600 mm of height was used as the magnetic separator. The separating efficiency was evaluated in the function of magnetic field. A steel slag was ground and analyzed for the composition. Iron containing minerals were successfully concentrated from less iron containing portion. The separation efficiency was highly dependent on the particle size giving higher separating efficiency with finer particle. The magnetic field also effects on the separation ratio. Current study showed that an appropriate grinding of slag and magnetic separation lead to the recovery of metal resources from steel slag waste rather than dumping all of the volume.

  • Dumping of wastes at sea will be strongly prohibited from 2012 by London Dumping Convention. So, finding the method for treatment of food waste at ground is needed urgently. The solution for above mentioned problem is the resource development from food waste leachate by using Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) process. In this research, we try to find out the effect of effluent recirculation and internal return influence on organic removal efficiency and biogas production. Laboratory investigation was conducted for 25 days with only internal recycling, and then, effluent recirculation was performed. As the result of experiments, the organic removal efficiency was above 90%, and the content of methane was 78~80% during operating time. Also, when UASB reactor was operated to over the 3 Q effluent recirculation, there was not 1 N-NaOH consumption any more, therethrough the experiment was economically and stably carried out.

  • Antenna pointing analysis for a geostationary satellite has been performed for using the NORAD Two-Line-Elements (TLE) converted from osculating Keplerian orbital elements. In order to check the possibility of the reception of the satellite signal, the antenna offset angles have been derived for the Communications, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) which carries out weekly East-West and North-South station-keeping maneuvers and twice a day thruster assisted momentum dumping. Throughout the analysis, it is shown that the use of converted NORAD TLE simplifies the antenna pointing related interfaces in satellite mission control system. For a highly eccentric transfer orbit cases, further analysis presents that the converted NORAD TLE from near apogee gives more favorable results.
