  • This paper describes a new voltage recorder for the voltage management of a power distribution line by using a new voltage measurement technique. The RMS(Root Mean Square) voltage measurement for the power line under the assumption of a sinusoidal input voltage is taken by the full-wave rectifier, half-adder utilizing operational amplifier(OP) circuit. A/D converter utilizing a dual slope converter converts an analog voltage signal into a serial pulse. The pulse is counted with a single chip micro-controller, converted with the RMS voltage, and saved into a flash memory. In the last, a new voltage recorder with compact size and multifunction is developed. Also, Voltage Management System that can analyze the stored data via RS-232C cable is developed based on Windows 95 and Visual C++.

  • Offset voltage and drift characteristics of operational amplifier are critical factor to precision AID conversion System. In this study, a method is suggested to design the programmable A/D conversion system which has high resolution and low drift characteristics. First, hardware was designed to reduce the offset voltage of integrator and comparator, and analog switches are connected to reduce the drift characteristics of operational amplifier. And then, a calibration software technique was performed to obtain the stable data from A/D converter. The main advantage of our method is high precision A/D converter can be constructed with low cost and high confidence. Therefore proposed method is expected to be used in the industrial field where a high precision measurement is required.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the turbulence intermittency measuring methods across the boundary layer in the transition region. A single type hot-wire probe was used to measure instantaneous streamwise velocities in laminar, transitional and turbulent boundary layer To estimate wall shear stresses on the flat plate, near wall mean velocities are applied to the principle of CPM. Distribution of intermittency factor is obtained by dual-slope method and compared to the results of four methods,$\'{u},\;\{U}$, TERA and M-TERA method. In these methods, M-TERA shows a good agreement in the near wall region. However, the result of M-TERA method shows that intermittency factor is underestimated in the outer part and outside of the boundary layer and the dimensional constant of M-TERA method should be changed appropriately depending on measuring point.

  • For study on the unsteady wall interference effect, flows around a forced oscillating airfoil in closed test-section wind tunnels have been numerically investigated by solving compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The numerical scheme is based on a node-based finite-volume method with the Roe's flux-difference splitting and an implicit time-integration method coupled with dual time-step sub-iteration. The Spalart-Allmaras one-equation model is employed for the turbulence effect. The computed results of the oscillating airfoil having a thin wake showed that the lift curve slope is increased and the magnitude of hysteresis loop is reduced by the interference effects. Since the vortex around the airfoil is generated and convected downstream faster than the free-air condition, the phase of lift, drag and pitching moment coefficients was shifted. The pressure on the test section wall shows harmonic terms having the oscillating frequency contained in the wail effect.

  • The isolated strips of tortoise intestine are evaluated as a test organ for bioassay of prostaglandin $E_1$. This preparation responded highly sensitively to $PGE_1$ and $PGE_2$ in picogram concentration range. The mean slope and the value of precision index among the doses of 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5ng/ml in final concentration were 37.7 and 0.143, respectively. And this was relatively insensitive to different prostaglandins; $E_1/E_2{\gtrsim}1$, $E_1/A_2{\sim}50$ and $E_1/F_{2\alpha}{\sim}100$, and showed the dual responses to 5-hydroxytryptamine and histamine; initial contraction followed by relaxation. The dose-ratio inducing the relative equal contraction height for $PGE_1$, acetylcholine, caerulein, angiotensin and barium chloride was 0.4 : 50 : 25 : 10 : 100 in this order. These results suggest that the intestinal strips of the tortoise are suitable for bioassay of prostaglandin $E_1$ and $E_2$ between the doses of 0.1 and 1.0 ng/ml level in the tissue extracts.

  • To prevent maloperation during magnetic inrush and over-excitation, a current differential relay for power transformers uses harmonic current based restraining or blocking scheme; it also uses dual slope characteristics to prevent maloperation for an external fault with CT saturation. This paper proposes a current differential relaying algorithm for power transformers with an advanced compensation algorithm for the secondary current of CTs. The comparative study was conducted with and without the compensating algorithm. The algorithm can reduce the operating time of the relay in the case of an internal fault and improve security for external faults.

  • The liberalization of electricity market and environmental concerns are the major driving forces for the development of Distributed Generation (DG). The mode of grid-connected wind power generation is becoming popular and has matured as a reliable DG technology. The voltage generated by the wind generator is stepped up to the higher voltage by the transformers before connecting to the grid. Operating algorithm of the differential relays for transformer protection used in the wind farms need to be modified to take care of the dynamic nature of fault current caused by the intermittent nature of the wind power. An algorithm for the differential relay is proposed in which dual slope characteristics are adjusted with varying fault level situation according to the wind generator in service as well as with the wind speed. A case study conducted for a typical wind farm shows that the proposed method avoids mal-operation of the differential relay in varying wind power conditions.

  • This paper presents a dual-algorithm search method (GWO-GSO) combining grey wolf optimization (GWO) and golden-section optimization (GSO) to realize maximum power point tracking (MPPT) for photovoltaic (PV) systems. First, a modified grey wolf optimization (MGWO) is activated for the global search. In conventional GWO, wolf leaders possess the same impact on decision-making. In this paper, the decision weights of wolf leaders are automatically adjusted with hunting progression, which is conducive to accelerating hunting. At the later stage, the algorithm is switched to GSO for the local search, which play a critical role in avoiding unnecessary search and reducing the tracking time. Additionally, a novel restart judgment based on the quasi-slope of the power-voltage curve is introduced to enhance the reliability of MPPT systems. Simulation and experiment results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can track the global maximum power point (MPP) swiftly and reliably with higher accuracy under various conditions.

  • Objective : Comparing the effects of magnetically controlled growing rod (MCGR) and traditional growing rod (TGR) techniques on the sagittal plane in the treatment of early-onset scoliosis (EOS). Methods : Twelve patients were operated using dual MCGR technique in one center, while 15 patients were operated using dual TGR technique for EOS in another center. Patients' demographic characteristics, complications and radiological measurements such as cobb angle, thoracic kyphosis, lumbar lordosis, T1-S1 range (mm), proximal junctional angle, distal junctional angle, sagittal balance, coronal balance, pelvic incidence, sacral slope and pelvic tilt were assessed and compared in preoperative, postoperative and last follow-up period. Results : Age and sex distributions were similar in both groups. The mean number of lengthening in the MCGR group was 12 (8-15) and 4.8 (3-7) in the TGR group. Two techniques were shown to be effective in controlling the curvature and in the increase of T1-S1 distance. In TGR group, four patients had rod fractures, six patients had screw pull-out and four patients had an infection, whereas three patients had screw pull-out and one patient had infection complications in the MCGR group. Conclusion : There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of cobb angle, coronal and sagittal balance and sagittal pelvic parameters. MCGR can cause hypokyphosis and proximal junctional kyphosis in a minimum 2-year follow-up period. The implant-related complications were less in the MCGR group. However, larger case groups and longer follow-up periods are required for the better understanding of the superiority of one method on other in terms of complications.

  • This paper presents a LLC resonant controller IC for secondary side control without external active devices to achieve low profile and low cost LED back light units. A gate driving transformer is adopted to isolate the primary side and the secondary side instead of an opto-coupler. A new integrated dimming circuitry is proposed to improve the dynamic current control characteristic and the current density of a LED for the brightness modulation of a large screen LCD. A dual-slope clock generator is proposed to overcome the frequency error due to the under shoot in conventional approaches. This chip is fabricated using 0.35 ${\mu}m$ BCD technology and the die size is $2{\times}2\;mm^2$. The frequency range of the clock generator is from 50 kHz to 500 kHz and the range of the dead time is from 50 ns to 2.2 ${\mu}s$. The efficiency of the LED driving circuit is 97 % and the current consumption is 40 mA for a 100 kHz operation frequency from a 15 V supply voltage.
