Further Specialization of Clustered VLIW Processors: A MAP Decoder for Software Defined Radio

  • Turbo codes are extensively used in current communications standards and have a promising outlook for future generations. The advantages of software defined radio, especially dynamic reconfiguration, make it very attractive in this multi-standard scenario. However, the complex and power consuming implementation of the maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithm, employed by turbo decoders, sets hurdles to this goal. This work introduces an ASIP architecture for the MAP algorithm, based on a dual-clustered VLIW processor. It displays the good performance of application specific designs along with the versatility of processors, which makes it compliant with leading edge standards. The machine deals with multi-operand instructions in an innovative way, the fetching and assertion of data is serialized and the addressing is automatized and transparent for the programmer. The performance-area trade-off of the proposed architecture achieves a throughput of 8 cycles per symbol with very low power dissipation.

A New Hardening Technique Against Radiation Faults in Asynchronous Digital Circuits Using Double Modular Redundancy (이중화 구조를 이용한 비동기 디지털 시스템의 방사선 고장 극복)

  • Asynchronous digital circuits working in military and space environments are often subject to the adverse effects of radiation faults. In this paper, we propose a new hardening technique against radiation faults. The considered digital system has the structure of DMR (Double Modular Redundancy), in which two sub-systems conduct the same work simultaneously. Based on the output feedback, the proposed scheme diagnoses occurrences of radiation faults and realizes immediate recovery to the normal behavior by overriding parts of memory bits of the faulty sub-system. As a case study, the proposed control scheme is applied to an asynchronous dual ring counter implemented in VHDL code.

  • The cavitating flow simulation is of practical importance for many engineering systems, such as marine propellers, pump impellers, nozzles, injectors, torpedoes, etc. The present work has focused on the simulation of cavitating flow past cylinders with strong side flow. The governing equation is the Navier-Stokes equation based on homogeneous mixture model. The momentum and energy equation is in the mixture phase while the continuity equation is solved liquid and vapor phase, separately. An implicit dual time and preconditioning method are employed for computational analysis. The results from the present solver have been in a fairly good agreement with the experimental data and other numerical results. After the code validation the strong side flow was applied to include the wake flow effect of the submarine.

  • The conventional MOX fuel shows adverse controllability in view of its neutronic characteristics such as decreased soluble boron worth and effective delayed-neutron fraction compared to the UO$_2$ fuel. In order to mitigate these disadvantages, we devised a new concept of the hybrid UO$_2$-MOX fuel pellet with dual structure such that its outer annular section contains. UO$_2$ fuel and its inner cylindrical bar contains MOX fuel. The lattice physics code HELIOS was used to evaluate the neutronic characteristics of three different types of fuel pellets ; UO$_2$ fuel pellet, MOX fuel pellet, and hybrid UO$_2$-MOX fuel pellet. Results show that the hybrid UO$_2$-MOX fuel pellet generally has intermediate neutronic tendency between UO$_2$ fuel and MOX which could diminish the problems arising from the use of the conventional MOX fuel.

  • In this paper we studied an integration scheme of some simplex algorithms and some efficient techniques to get the stable solution in linear programming code. And we developed a linear programming package (LPAK) by introducing this scheme and techniques. In LPAK three different algorithms were integrated, which were two primal simplex algorithms using Two phase method and big-M method respectively, and the dual simplex algorithm. LPAK introduces several heuristic techniques in each step of simplex method in order to enhance the stability and efficiency. They were new heuristic methods in structuring initial basis, choosing entering variable, choosing dropping variable and performing reinversion. The experimental results on the NETLIB problems showed that LPAK provided the stable solutions.

  • Computational rotor dynamic analyses of designed composite roller for large LCD panel manufacturing process have been conducted. The present computational method is based on the general finite element method with rotating gyroscopic effects. General purpose commercial finite element code, with special rotordynamics analysis module is applied. For the purpose of numerical verification, comparison study for a benchmark dual rotor model with support bearings is also presented. Detailed finite element models for composite roller with different length are constructed and analyzed considering gravity effect in order to investigate vibration characteristics in actual operation environment. As results of the present study, rotor stability diagrams and mass unbalance responses are presented for different rotating conditions.

  • In this paper, the seismic performance of reinforced concrete braced frames (RC-BF) under far- and near-fault motions was investigated. Four-, eight-, 12- and 16-story RC-BFs were designed on the basis of a code-design method for a high risk seismic zone. Nonlinear static and dynamic analyses of the frames have been performed using OpenSees software. To consider diverse characteristics of near-fault motions, records with forward-directivity and fling-step effects were employed. From the results obtained in the analytical study it is concluded that the used design method was reasonable and the mean maximum drift of the frames under all ground motion sets were in acceptable range. For intermediate- and high-rise buildings the near-fault motions imposed higher demands than far-faults.

  • In this paper, we study the robot controller design using the voice and data communication via CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access) mobile communication network. We design the robot remote controller using the three methods, telephone call speech recognition, DTMF (Dual Tone Multiple Frequency) realization, SMS(Short Message Service) transmission/reception way via CDMA mobile communication network. We investigate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed remote controller which applied to the mobile robot.

  • In this paper, a design of processor IP for TCP/IP protocol stack is described. The processor consists of input and output buffer memory with dual bank structure, 32-bit RISC microprocessor core, DMA unit with on-the-fly checksum capability. To handle the various modes of TCP/IP protocol, hardware and software co-design approach is used rather than the conventional state machine based design. To eliminate delay time due to the data transfer and checksum operation, DAM module which can execute the checksum operation on-the-fly along with data transfer operation is adopted. By programming the on-chip code ROM of RISC processor differently. the designed stack processor can support the packet format conversion operations required in the various TCP/IP protocols.

Combined GPS/GLONASS Relative Receiver DCB Estimation Using the LSQ Method and Ionospheric TEC Changes over South Korea

  • The use of dual-frequency measurements from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) enables us to observe precise ionospheric total electron content (TEC). Currently, many GNSS reference stations in South Korea provide both GPS and GLONASS data. In the present study, we estimated the grid-based TEC values and relative receiver differential code biases (DCB) from a GNSS network operated by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute. In addition, we compared the diurnal variations in a TEC time series from solutions of the GPS only, the GLONASS only, and combined GPS/GLONASS processing. A significant difference between the GPS only TEC and combined GPS/GLONASS TEC at a specific grid point over South Korea appeared near the solar terminator. It is noted that GLONASS measurements can contribute to observing a variation in ionospheric TEC over high latitude regions.
