Drying of granules for tablet formulation is one of the important unit operations. The loss on drying method is traditionally used for this purpose. However, it is a time-consuming method, requiring at least 1 h. Moreover, it is ineffective in monitoring the moisture content of granules during the drying process. In this study, online real-time monitoring of moisture content during the drying process was successfully performed using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. NIR spectra were collected during 15 different drying batches for developing a reliable NIR spectroscopic method. Such a large number of batches were used to develop a more robust partial least squares (PLS) model. NIR spectra collected from 12 batches were used for developing the model that was validated by predicting the moisture content of the samples in the remaining 3 batches. The standard errors of predictions (SEPs) in the measurement of batch 1, batch 2, and batch 3 were 0.52%, 0.57%, and 0.56%, respectively. The online NIR spectroscopic method developed in this study was reliable and accurate in monitoring the moisture content during the drying process.

IIn this study, we have developed drying systems for reducing the error by humidity on measuring particulate matter (PM) in the ambient air with optical particle measuring instruments. Two types of drying systems were designed: drying systems using heating and dilution methods. In addition, 3 types of drying systems using a heating method were designed: Type A (1 hole), B (3 holes) and C (7 holes). After making them, the laboratory and field tests were carried out to evaluate the developed drying systems. As a result, it was shown that the PM concentrations obtained by PM monitoring devices with drying systems agree well with that of the reference devices. Therefore, it could be concluded that the drying systems can be applied to PM monitoring devices for real-time monitoring of the ambient aerosols.
Acquisition of precise information on drying characteristics of wood is indispensable for the improvement of drying schedules and wood quality. Recognition of the exact moisture content at which drying defects such as checks occur during drying with given drying conditions may be essential to reduce drying losses. In this study an image-processing system was combined with a laboratory-scale wood dry kiln for experiments and the surface of tree disk of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) was monitored to investigate the behavior of check formation over all the drying process. This system showed good potential for improving drying schedules and wood product quality.
As the permeability is an important parameter to characterize the ease with which a porous medium transmits fluids, it is usually obtained by fluid flow experiment using core samples. In order to measure the permeability, however, an experimental apparatus is required and it might take long measurement time, especially for tight samples. In this study, the relationship between permeability and porosity as well as drying rate has been investigated to predict the permeability without a series of measuring experiments. Porosity is measured by drying monitoring method, which measures weight variation continuously while drying surface-dried saturated sample, and drying rate is obtained from weight variation ratio with respect to the water saturation. The total of 6 Berea sandstone samples, which have a permeability range of 70 to 670 mD, were used in this work, and a new and empirical equation which could predict permeability of porous sandstone by using porosity and drying rate were obtained through regression analysis.
This study examined the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC), considering the volume change, using wetting curves on the field monitoring data of a wireless sensor network. Special attention was given to evaluating the landslide vulnerability by deriving a matric suction suitable for the actual site during the wetting process. Laboratory drying SWCC and shrinkage laboratory tests were used to perform the combined analysis of landslide and debris flow. The results showed that the safety factor of the wetting curve, considering the volume change of soil, was lower than that of the drying curve. As a result of numerical analyses of the debris flow simulation, more debris flow occurred in the wetting curve than in the drying curve. It was also found that the landslide analysis with the drying curve tends to overestimate the actual safety factor with the in situ wetting curve. Finally, it is confirmed that calculating the matric suction through SWCC considering the volume change is more appropriate and reasonable for the field landslide analysis.
The response surface methodology was performed by central composite design for moisture content, titratable acidity, hunter's color value and organoleptic properties based on drying temperature and time of Citrus, to apply basic data to preparation of dried Citrus. Moisture content, b value and organoleptic color were affected by drying temperature ; That decreased with increase of drying temperature. Titratable acidity was affected by drying time. Organoleptic flavor and taste were affected by drying temperature and time. The optimum drying conditons for organoleptic taste were 67.56$^{\circ}C$ in drying temperature and 8.06 hr in drying time.

The primary purposes of this study are to understand a fundamental aspect of current uniformity around a reinforcing bar (rebar) in cement mortar, and to develop an accurate monitoring method in a wet-dry cycling process with the alternative current (AC) impedance method. Three cement mortar specimens with two embedded rebars were prepared in the laboratory. As a main variable, the distance between two rebars was designed to be 10, 20 and 30 mm with the same thickness of 20 mm. To simulate the corrosion of rebars in concrete structures in a marine environment, three cement mortar specimens were exposed to 15 wet-drying cycles (24-hour-immersion in seawater and 48-hour-drying in a room temperature) in the laboratory. It was observed that the potential level shifted to a noble value during corrosion potential monitoring, which is attributed to acceleration of dissolved oxygen diffusion at the drying process. AC impedance was measured in a frequency range from 100 kHz to 1 mHz on a wet-drying process. A theoretical model was proposed to explain the interface condition between the rebars and cement mortar by using the equivalent circuit consisting of a solution resistance, a charge transfer resistance and a CPE (constant phase element). It was observed that the diffusion impedance appeared in a low frequency range as corrosion of rebars progresses. At the drying stage of the wet-drying cycles, the currents line for monitoring tended to be non-uniform at the interface of rebar/mortar, being phase shift, ${\theta}$, close to $-45^{\circ}$.

To make the germinated buckwheat tea, soluble solid contents, total flavonoid contents and organoleptic properties were investigated under various steaming time and drying temperature. The optimum condition of soluble solid contents were 6.93 min of steaming time and 73.59$^{\circ}C$ of drying temperature. Total flavonoid contents were maximum under the condition of 5.22 min of steaming time and 79.05$^{\circ}C$ of drying temperature. The optimum condition of overall palatability was 6.00 min of steaming time and 77.33$^{\circ}C$ of drying temperature. The optimum ranges of soluble solid contents, total flavonoid contents and overall palatability of the tea were 5.4∼7.0 min of steaming time and 75∼8$0^{\circ}C$ of drying temperature. The values expected in the optimum ranges were also similar to the experimental values.
Drying process in a fixed bed red pepper dryer was modeled and simulated. Drying efficiency describing the effectiveness of energy usage in red pepper drying was defined as a ratio of energy used for moisture evaporation to total energy consumption, and expressed in combination of measurable temperature variables. The efficiency was compared with real evaporative efficiency and tested in the simulated and experimental drying. An overall drying efficiency was derived, and analyzed for various control variables consisting of drying temperature, air recycle ratio and air flow rate. Optimal operation conditions of drying was then searched by Box's complex method by using it as an objective function. Carotenoids retention was simulated and put as a constraint of product quality in the optimization. The optimization results gave that two staged drying operation could improve the ding efficiency compared with single staged drying. As a technique for further energy saving automatic termination of drying appeared feasible by monitoring an exit air temperature from dryer.

The red ginseng is very popular as a health food. It has been manufactured with raw ginseng by the conventional method. But, the yield of the heaven grade ginseng (the best quality red ginseng) among the whole products is around 5-7%, Therefore, the yield should be improved in order to increase economic returns. In this study, a new model of drying system was developed to improve the yield of heaven grade ginseng from 7% to 15% or more. For this system, temperature and relative humidity were controlled by the feedback control system, and a solenoid valve for steam supply and other variables were controlled by the PC. The special features of this system developed are an image processing system for monitoring the red ginseng during the drying process in the drying chamber, and a cylindrical porous tray for holding ginseng that is rotating with the speed of 0-10rpm in the drying chamber and makes uniform drying of red ginseng possible.
