This study was carried out to estimate drying schedules of Larix Leptolepis and Pinus koraiensis by oven-drying at $100^{\circ}C$ which aimed to elucidate the characteristics such as current moisture content, drying process. initial check, collapse, internal check and drying rate during drying following each board thickness (2, 3. 4, 5, 6cm). the results were summerized as follows; Current moisture content of each board showed a rapid drying curve with the decrease of board thickness. At 20% moisture content, the drying rate of Larix leptolepis was higher than that of Pinus koraiensis and the drying rate of boards was lower with the increase of board thickness. From the estimated drying schedules. the initial conditions of drying of Larix leptolepis had to be milder than those of Pinus koraiensis and the boards thickness of 5cm, 6cm had to be most mild conditions.
This study was carried out to estimate drying schedule of Fagaceae four species grown in Kangwon-Do by oven-drying at $100^{\circ}C$ which aimed to elucidate the characteristics such as current moisture content, drying process, initial check, collapse and internal check during drying following each board thickness (1.5cm, 2.5cm, 3.5cm, 4.5cm). The results were as follows; Current moisture content of each board showed a rapid drying curve with the high initial moisture content of board. With the high initial moisture content, the incease of board thickness and the slowness of changing rate of moisture content, species took long to do drying. Also, the initial conditions of drying had to be mild condition with the increase of board thickness.
This study was carried out to estimate drying schedule of Fagaceae four species grown in Kangwon-Do by oven-drying at $100^{\circ}C$ which aimed to elucidate the characteristics such as current moisture content, drying process, initial check, collapse and internal check during drying. The results were summerized as follows ; Current moisture content of each board showed a rapid drying curve with the hight initial moisture content of board and species with the high initial moisture content took long to do drying. Appearance of checks for Quercus variabilis were extremely severe and estimated schedule was $T_5-C_2$. The shrinkage rate of grain direction was in the order of tangential direction > radial direction > longitudial direction and the shrinkage rate of oven-drying at $100^{\circ}C$ was bigger than normal shrinkage rate.
This study was conducted to develop a new drying technology in order to quickly and massively dry bamboo tubes without crack and check. The bamboo tubes with the diameter of 45 mm - 68 mm had been impregnated in the solution of PEG-1000, and then were dried under room temperature and high temperature, respectively. The cracks occurred on all control specimens while no cracks were found on PEG treated specimens during drying at room temperature due to effect of PEG restraining the circumferential shrinkage of bamboo tube. But the drying period of this method was too long (200 days) compared to 10 hours of kiln drying. During fast high temperature drying, cracks occurred on all control specimens, but no cracks were found on PEG treated specimens, which could be accounted for more solidified PEG due to higher drying temperature and faster drying rate, and the tension set formed on the surface of bamboo tube in the early stage of drying owning to high drying temperature and low relative humidity. Thus, it is advised that PEG treated bamboo tube should be fast dried at high temperature in order to not only prevent crack or check in short drying period but also increase the dimensional stability of the products made of bamboo tubes.

This study aims to evaluate applicability for the continuous drying process using saturated and superheated steam for large-square timber. During drying of the boxed heart square timber, changes in moisture content were examined through the slices of the surface, inner and core layers. The results showed that there was a large moisture content difference between the surface and inner layers during saturated steam drying and between the inner and core layers during superheated steam drying. However, despite the moisture content difference between the layers, no surface check occurred, and an internal check occurred only near the pith or juvenile parts of the wood. The maximum value of the drying stress of the dried larch boxed heart square timber, calculated from the elastic strain of the slice and the tangential elastic modulus of the larch, was 1.30 MPa. The tangential tensile strength of the larch was estimated at 5.21 MPa under temperature and moisture content conditions when drying stress was at a maximum. That is, in the continuous drying process, the saturated and superheated steam did not generate a check in the surface because the drying stress of the wood did not exceed the tangential tensile strength. In further studies, the superheated steam drying conditions will need to be relaxed to suppress the occurrence of internal checks. Such studies would make the continuous drying process using saturated and superheated steam available for the drying of large-square timber.
This study was executed to find the applicability of press drying of tree disk by investigating the shrinkage and drying defect and to form appropriate model by comparing the actual moisture content(MC) and internal temperature in respect of drying time with calculated values based computer simulation to which was applied finite difference method. In press drying disk, heating period, constant drying rate period maintained plateau temperature at 100$^{\circ}C$ and falling drying rate period were significantly distinguished. Actual MC and internal temperature were analogous to those calculated at comparing points. Heat transfer model formed by Fourier's law using specific heat of moist wood and conduction coefficient considering fractional volume of each element of wood cell wall, bound water, free water and air showed applicability as basic data to developing heat expansion, shrinkage and drying stress during press drying. Also mass transfer model formed by Fick's diffusion law using water vapor diffusion coefficient showed applicability. Longitudinal shrinkage was developed by pressure of hot press and tangential shrinkage was restrained by hygrothermal recovery. The heart check, surface check and ring failure were occurred differently in species, but V-shaped crack didn't develop.
This study was executed to test the possibility of replacement for domestic Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis) for hardwoods and to acquire the information about the effects of drying temperature on internal temperature, moisture content and drying defects. In high-temperature drying, internal temperature increased rapidly to boiling point, immediately after that point the internal temperature rising rate was reduced. In the case of drying at temperature of $125^{\circ}C$, internal temperature could reach at boiling point in a very short time. Moisture content in high-temperature drying showed constant drying rate period and first period of falling rate drying together in 4 hours since experiment begun. There was no strong correlation between initial moisture content and final moisture content. Average drying rate at $115^{\circ}C$, $120^{\circ}C$ and $125^{\circ}C$ was 1.42%/hr, 1.88%/hr and 2.02%/hr, respectively; the case of drying temperature of $125^{\circ}C$ showed most rapid drying rate. Drying rate of $125^{\circ}C$ was so rapid that it showed more severe shrinkage, bow, collapse, end check, and internal check development than in other drying conditions. The result of this study showed the strong possibility of high-temperature drying for Japanese larch, and to dry Japanese larch optimally, dry bulb temperature should not exceed $120^{\circ}C$.
Acquisition of precise information on drying characteristics of wood is indispensable for the improvement of drying schedules and wood quality. Recognition of the exact moisture content at which drying defects such as checks occur during drying with given drying conditions may be essential to reduce drying losses. In this study an image-processing system was combined with a laboratory-scale wood dry kiln for experiments and the surface of tree disk of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) was monitored to investigate the behavior of check formation over all the drying process. This system showed good potential for improving drying schedules and wood product quality.
The characteristics of radio-frequency/vacuum drying Japanese larch boxed heart round logs with 150 mm and 210 mm in diameter and 2,500 mm in length, subjected to compressive loading, after the pretreatment of kerf were investigated. The results of this study were as the follows: The drying time of about 120 hours~130 hours was needed from green to about 15 percent of moisture content. The gradient of final moisture content for all specimens was very gentle in both longitudinal and transverse directions owing to dielectric heating. The surface checks seriously occurred although the occurrence extent of surface check for the kerfed specimens was slight compared with that for the control specimens because drying stress was relieved by kerf. The occurrence of surface checks for the L-specimen was more serious than that for the S-specimen.
Timbers of 14 by 14 cm, 2.4 m long, were dried in a vacuum kiln to investigate vacuum drying characteristics using three types of heating methods, conduction heating with hot plate, the radio frequency (RF) heating and the combination of both (hybrid heating). Average drying rate is the highest for the hybrid heating and the lowest for the RF heating. Average specific energy is the highest for the RF heating and the lowest for conduction heating. Transverse moisture content distribution of dried timber revealed the convex profile for both conduction and the hybrid heating and moisture content increased from one face to the opposite face for the RF heating. Moisture content distribution along the length of timber increased from the end to the middle of timber length for conduction and the hybrid heating and decreased from the end to the middle of timber length for the RF heating. End- and surface checks for conduction heating were severer than the other heating methods. No internal check occurred in any heating methods. Drying characteristics of conduction heating showed in-between trend of the RF and the hybrid heating.
