  • The effects of simulated acid rain on the growth and interspecific competition of Echinochloa crus-galli and Digitaria sanguinalis were studied. Changes of growth in height and dry weight were examined and competition between the two species was investigated using the experimental model proposed by de Wit (1960). The experiments were carried out in the greenhouse, and test plants were germinated and grown for 4 weeks and then sprayed with simulated acid rain of pH 5.6, 4.2 and 2.8 for another 8 weeks. In de Wit replacement experiments, the variation of density and the treatment of simulated acid rain showed little effect on the interspecific competition between E. Crus-galli and D.sanguinalis. The ratio diagram, another method to reveal the interrelations between two competing species, always showed the predominance of E. crus-galli in competition, regardless of density and pH. The interspecific competition of the two species, represented by relative yield total (RYT), revealed that intraspecific competition was stronger than interspecific competition in both species. The treatment of simulated acid rain showed little effect on the growth of E. Crus-galli and D. sanguinalis. Height growth of both species did not differ from that of control (pH 5.6), but root/shoot ratio increased with the decrease in pH of simulated acid rain. Growth of tatal dry weight of E. crus-galli and D. sanguinalis was not influenced by the change of pH, except that D.sanguinalis showed a decrease in the total dry weight at pH 2.8 along with a visible sign of white spots on leaves. Physical environmental conditions can exert an effect on the interrelationships between the two species, but this experiment did not show the reversion of competition, and showed that E.crus-gilli was competitively dominant under any environmental conditions given in this study.

  • High density (HD) grains is associated with seedling vigor. Studies were conducted on the relationship of different grain densities and vascular bundle(VB) development and seedling growth. IR58 (indica type) and Unbong 7 (japonica type) were used in this experiment. HD grains had more and bigger VB in the leaf blade and sheath than poor density grain at seedling stage. IR58 had more large VB at the leaf compared with Unbong 7. Higher development of VB in seedling of HD grains can increase transport of assimilate and growth rate. Plant height, leaf number, root growth and dry weight increased with increasing grain density from poor to high. The total area of large VB in the leaf blade and sheath was highly correlated with the dry weight. Higher number and larger area of VB and dry weight can be obtained by using HD grains and these initial advantages can contribute to high yield potential.

  • Background: Ginseng root rot disease, caused by Cylindrocarpon destructans and Fusarium solani is a major cause of replant failure in continuous cropping ginseng. Methods and Results: To control replant injury in soil infected with C. destructans and F. solani, biosolarization was performed by covering the plot with transparent polyethylene film after adding green manure of maize and sunflower for the summer season. Per 10 a, fresh and dry weight of maize was 10.1 and 2.5 tons, respectively, and that of sunflower was 8.1 tons and 1.2 tons, respectively. Mean maximum temperature at 20 cm depth was $33.2^{\circ}C$, $41.5^{\circ}C$ and $41.8^{\circ}C$ in the control, maize-incorporated and sunflower-incorporated plots, respectively. The elapsed time over $40^{\circ}C$ was 36.4 h in the maize-incorporated plot and 77.3 h in the sunflower-incorporated plot. Biosolarization increased $NO_3$ content in soil, while content of organic matter, Ca, and Mg was decreased. Electrical conductivity, $NO_3$ and $P_2O_5$ in soil significantly increased after two years of biosolarization. The number of spores of C. destructans in soil was significantly decreased by biosolarization, and sunflower treatment was more effective than maize treatment in decreasing the number of spores. Root yield of 3-year-old ginseng was significantly increased by biosolarization, however, there was no significant difference between maize and sunflower treatments. Rate of root rot in 3-year-old ginseng decreased to 16.5% with the incorporation maize and 5.0% with the incorporation of sunflower, while that in control 25.6%. Conclusions: Biosolarization was effective in inhibiting ginseng root rot by decreasing the density of root rot disease and improving soil chemical properties.

  • This study was conducted to response the growth, seed yield, nitrogen content and different cation content of two soybean, flooding-tolerant cv. Pungsannamulkong (PNSK) and flooding-sensitive cv. Tawonkong (TWK) when these were subjected to flooding stress at R1 stage for cultivation in paddy field. Flooding, underground water levels (UWL) of 0 cm, 10 cm and 40 cm, was experimented from flowering time to harvest time. The dry matter and seed yield of soybean with UWL of 0 or 10 cm declined in comparison with UWL of 40 cm and these were more reduction in TWK than in PNSK. The amount of nitrogen uptake decreased in higher UWL and there was a high significant relationship $(R^2=0.872)$ between nitrogen content and seed yield at flooding stress. K content of leaf and stem in soybean plants had a small change with UWL but Ca content had a decrease (leaf and stem) or increase (root). Mn and Fe content were increased at higher UWL and were more in TWK than in PNSK.

  • A new sweetpotato variety, 'Daeyumi', was developed by Bioenergy Crop Research Center, National Institute of Crop Science (NICS), RDA in 2008. This variety was obtained from the cross between 'Jinhongmi' and 'Xusju 18' in 2000. The seedling and line selections were performed from 2001 to 2003, preliminary and advanced yield trials were carried out from 2004 to 2005, and the regional yield trials were conducted at six locations from 2006 to 2008. 'Daeyumi' has cordate leaf, green vine and petiole, elliptic storage root, red skin and yellow flesh color of storage root. This variety is also resistant to Fusarium wilt and nematode. The starch value was 25.9%, ethanol yield was 418 L/Ton, which was 7% higher than that of 'Yulmi' variety, and the total sugar content was 2.47 g/100g, dry weight. 'Daeyumi's initial temperature of starch gelatinization was lower, 76.2$^{\circ}C$, and the retrogradation process was earlier than 'Yulmi'. The average yield of storage root was 27.8 ton/ha in the regional yield trials, which was 36% higher than that of 'Yulmi' variety. Number of storage roots over 50 gram per plant was 3.0, and the average weight of one storage root was 152 gram. This variety can be used for the production of bioethanol and starch processing.

  • Stress from excess water is one of the most harmful limiting factor in soybean yield during the wet season under the climate conditions. Soybean is very sensitive to excess water compare to other crops. This experiment was carried out to identify the growth responses for establishing a screening system related to waterlogging tolerance in soybean from 2003 to 2004. The root dry weight accumulation rate of per day for 21 days after waterlogging at V5 stage was the highest in Pungsannamulkong (47~56% of control) and was the lowest in Jangyeobkong (26~27% of control). The nodules dry weight recovery rate was the highest in Pungsannamulkong (83~91% of control), while the lowest in Myungjunamulkong (48~66% of control). After waterlogging, recovery rate of roots was high, which increased the root/shoot ratio of Pungsannamulkong, which also produced significantly more adventitious roots than in Jangyeobkong. The percentage of adventitious roots fresh weight to the total roots fresh weight was the lowest in Myungjunamulkong (14%), while the highest in Pungsannamulkong (38%). This results implies that the water and nutrients absorbing ability of Pungsannamulkong is more higher than that of Myungjunamulkong during late growth period.

  • Due to the climate changes in Korea, the numbers of both torrential rain events and drought periods have increased in frequency. Water management practice against water shortage and flooding is one of the key interesting for field crop cultivation, and groundwater often serves as an important and safe source of water to crops. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of groundwater table levels on soil water content and soybean development under two different textured soils. The experiment was conducted using lysimeter located in Miryang, Korea. Two types of soils (sandy-loam and silty-loam) were used with three groundwater table levels (0.2, 0.4, 0.6m). Mean soil water content during the soybean growth period was significantly influenced by groundwater table levels. With the continuous groundwater level at 0.2m from the soil surface, soil water content was not statistically changed between vegetative and reproductive stage, but the 0.4 and 0.6m groundwater table level was significantly decreased. Lower chlorophyll content in soybean leaves was found in shallow water table treatment in earlier part of the growing season, but the chlorophyll contents were non-significant among water table treatments. Groundwater table level treatments were significantly influenced on plant available nitrogen content in surface soil. The highest N contents were observed in 0.6m groundwater table level. It is probably due to the nitrogen loss by denitrification as the result of high soil water content. The length and dry weight of primary root was influenced by groundwater level and thus the highest length and dry weight of root were observed in 0.6m water table level. This result showed that soybean root growth did not extend below the groundwater level and increased with the depth of groundwater table level. The results of this study show that the management of groundwater level can influence on soil characteristics, especially on soil water content, and it is an important practice of to reduce yield loss caused by the water stress during the crop growing season.

  • Phosphorus (P) is one of the essential elements of the phospholipids that are involved in the formation of plant cell membranes. Phosphorus is highly immobile in soils and is often a limiting nutrient for plant growth. Phosphorus mobility and availability varies with several factors such as application frequency, placement in the soil, and the amount of irrigation or precipitation. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of P applications at level of 0, 146, and 293 $kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ at four mixing depths (0, 7.6, 15.2, and 22.9 cm )on the growth and establishment of Kentucky bluegrass (Poapratensis L.) in a sand-based system.Grass clipping samples were collectedevery two weeks, dried, and weighed. Total root dry weight, root organic matter, and tissue content of P were measured at the end of the study. Leachate was collected weekly and analyzed for total P concentration. No difference was found between application of P to the surface and to the 7.6 cm mixing depth. However, surface application with 146 and 293 kg $P{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ produced 8-10% and 16-20% more P in tissue than subsurface applications, respectively.

  • Two fast-growing clones 65-29-19 and 66-6-8 and two less fast-growing clones 66-14-29 and 66-14-99 were compared at intensively cultured plots to identify what morphological characters are related to fast growth and high biomass yield of Populus alba ${\times}$ Populus glandulosa $F_1$. The plantations were established in the spring of 1982 and 1983 at the Seoul National University nursery in Suweon. Differences in dry matter production were found among two-year-old clones but not, among one-year-old clones. Highly significant correlations were found between total leaf area per tree and total dry weight per tree and between total branch length per tree and total dry weight per tree for two-year-old clones. This relation was more obvious during the late growing season. Morphological characters desirable for producing high biomass identified in fast-growing clones were as follows; high shoot-root ratio, high leaf surface area per tree, long leaf retention period, and many small leaves and compact crown architecture in the upper portion of true crown.
