  • A Pot experiment was conducted to study the uptake of $Sr^{90}$ by rice plants in five different types of paddy soils and its distribution in these plants as a function of the age of the rice. The uptake of $Sr^{90}$ by rice plants increased with the growth of the aboveground mass of the plants from the planting period, but $Sr^{90}$ content per unit of dry matter decreased as the organic mass of the plants increased during the vegetative growing period, except for the time of ripening. The content of Ca and $Sr^{90}$ in rice plants was higher in the stem and leaves than in grain parts in general. However, Ca content was decreased in the stem and increased in the grain part with the growth of the rice plant ; but $Sr^{90}$ content was increased in the leaves and decreased in the stem and grain parts.

  • PURPOSES : The rumble strip installed at the highway near the tollgate has the purpose to reduce the vehicle velocity or prevent sleepiness by awakening people to the danger. These rumble strip has different vibration decibel from the rumble strip shapes, resulting in some fatigue damage to human because a driver suffers from a lot of stress and displeasure. In this connection, the objective of this paper is to analyze the vibration decibel perceived by a driver in the vehicle under some conditions. METHODS : The vibration decibel conveyed from the tire can be analyzed. The frequency analysis methods were used according to DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform) analysis, FFT (Fast Fourier Transform) analysis, CPB (Constant Percentage Bandwidth) analysis. But the frequency analysis method in this paper is the 1/24 OCT(Octave) band analysis because of the convenience of the analysis and the overall vibration amplitude along the frequency. RESULTS : By using the results of the vibration decibel after analyzing the 1/24 OCT band analysis, these results can be compared from some conditions (e.g., rumble strip shape, uniform velocity of a vehicle, road condition, mass of a vehicle). As a result, the numerical values of decibel are not directly proportional to the vehicle velocity. CONCLUSIONS : At the condition that a vehicle is passing by the rumble strip, the value of a vibration decibel at the rumble strip of the cylinder shape is smaller than the rumble strip of rectangular shape regardless of the rumble strip depth and width. At the mass condition, the more a vehicle is massive, the more the vibration decibel increases. At the road condition, the vibration decibel at the wet road is smaller than the value at dry road condition.

  • The characteristics of inductively coupled Cl$_2$/BCl$_3$ plasmas during the GaN etching were studied using plasma mass spectrometry by measuring the relative amounts of reactive ions, neutrals, and etch products. GaN etch rates increased with the increase of pressure and showed a maximum near 25mTorr for the pure $Cl_2$ and near 30mTorr for $Cl_2$$BCl_3$. The addition of$ BCl_3$ to $Cl_2$ also was increased GaN etch rates until 50%BCl$_3$ was mixed to $Cl_2$. The GaN etching with pure $Cl Cl_2$ appears to be related to the combination of Cl$_2^{+}$ ion bombardment and the chemical reaction of Cl radicals. In the case of the GaN etching with Cl$_2$/BCl$_3$, in addition to the combined effect of$_2^{ +}$ ions and Cl radicals, $_BCl2^{+ }$ ions appear to be responsible for some of GaN etching even though they do not have significant effect on the GaN etching compared to $Cl_2^{+}$ and Cl. $Ga^{+ }$ , $GaCl^{+}$ , $GaCl_2^{+}$ , and $N_2^{+}$ were observed as the positive ions of etch products, and the intensities of these etch products showed the same trends as those of GaN etch rate. Among the etch products, Ga and $N_2$ appear to be the main etch products.

  • To improve the accuracy of land-cover discrimination in SAB data classification, this paper presents a methodology that includes feature extraction and fusion steps with multi-temporal SAR data. Three features including average backscattering coefficient, temporal variability and coherence are extracted from multi-temporal SAR data by considering the temporal behaviors of backscattering characteristics of SAR sensors. Dempster-Shafer theory of evidence(D-S theory) and fuzzy logic are applied to effectively integrate those features. Especially, a feature-driven heuristic approach to mass function assignment in D-S theory is applied and various fuzzy combination operators are tested in fuzzy logic fusion. As experimental results on a multi-temporal Radarsat-1 data set, the features considered in this paper could provide complementary information and thus effectively discriminated water, paddy and urban areas. However, it was difficult to discriminate forest and dry fields. From an information fusion methodological point of view, the D-S theory and fuzzy combination operators except the fuzzy Max and Algebraic Sum operators showed similar land-cover accuracy statistics.

  • A hydrodynamic separator using natural free energy provided by bridge was operated for the treatment of stormwater runoff. The separator was automatically controlled by using electronic valve which is connected with pressure meter. Normally the separator was opened during dry days, but it was closed after the capture of first flush. The results indicated that the average pressure and the flow rate were directly affected by the rainfall intensity. The pressure was more than 3 meters as the rainfall intensity was above 5 mm/hr. The percent volume of underflow decreased as the pressure and flow rate increased, but the percent volume of overflow showed an opposite behavior. The concentration of total suspended solids (TSS) in underflow increased as a function of increasing pressure while it decreased in overflow. The TSS separation efficiency was evaluated based on mass balance. It ranged from 30% to 90% with the pressure ranging from 2 to 10 meters, and it was proportional to pressure and flow rate. The analysis of water balance indicated that around 13% of total runoff was captured by the separator as a first flush, and this runoff was separated as underflow and overflow with the respective percent volume of 29% and 71%. The pollutants budget was also examined based on mass balance. The results showed that the percent of TSS, $COD_{cr}$, TN and TP in underflow were 73%, 59%, 7.6% and 49%, respectively.

  • The phenolic compounds, antioxidant activity and neuronal cell protective effect of Cirsium japonicum extract were evaluated in this study. High performance liquid chromatography mass analysis showed that C. japonicum was composed of chlorogenic acid, linarin, and pectolinarin. C. japonicum extract showed its antioxidant activity with half-maximal inhibitory concentrations of 567 and $130{\mu}g/mL$ by DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity, respectively. The total antioxidant capacities of C. japonicum via DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP assays were 11.32, 100.15, and $12.76{\mu}g/mL$ trolox equivalents, respectively. In addition, the neuroprotective effect of C. japonicum extract was investigated by measuring cell viability via MTT, LDH and DCF-DA assay using $H_2O_2-damaged$ PC12 cells. C. japonicum extract showed neuronal cell protective effects in a dose-dependent manner. These results indicated that C. japonicum extract has potent antioxidant and neuronal protective effects. Therefore, C. japonicum can be regarded as an effective and safe functional food resource as natural antioxidants, and may decrease the risk of neurodegenerative disorders.

  • This study was carried out to find out the effect of by-product gypsum(phosphogypsum, PG) application on enhancement of turf quality. For the first experiment, 10 ton $ha^{-1}$ PG was applied to 1m${\times}$10m (width${\times}$length) Plots with 4 replicates on a sloping area of fairway where turf(Zoysia japonica L.) was grown. Both top- and sub-soil samples were collected before and after treatment and were analyzed for pH, EC(e1ectrica1 conductivity), Ca and Mg contents. At the same time when soil samples were collected, specific color difference sensor value(SCDSV) that represented chlorophyll contents, fresh and dry weight of the turf were determined to find out the effect of PG treatment on turf growth. SCDSV of turf from PG treated plots measured at 98 and 147 days after treatment were significantly higher than those from control. Considering higher fresh and dry weight of leaf per unit area from PG treated plots than that from control, it was concluded that the elevated Ca and S level of the PG treated plots resulted in vigorous leaf growth of turf. For the second experiment 2, 5 and 10 ton $ha^{-1}$ PG were applied to 1m${\times}$10m(width${\times}$length) Plots with 3 replicates at a closer location as was used for the first experiment to find out the appropriate PG application rate. Before and after treatment soil and plant samples were collected and were analyzed by the same way as the first experiment. The pH of all the soil samples collected from PG treated plots at 38 days after treatment was lower than that from control. This trend changed as time passed. However, the pH of the soil from 10 ton $ha^{-1}$ PG treated plot was lower than that from control during the whole period of the second experiment. SCDSV, fresh and dry weight of leaf from PG treated plots at all 3 rates were higher than those from control for the second experiment. PG application to turf will be beneficial for both mass consumption of by-product gypsum and enhancement of turf quality.

  • The influence of growth regulators (NAA and BA) and sucrose concentrations (0, 3, 5, 7, 9%) on in vitro rapid-propagation of virus-free sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] was investigated with single-node or shoot-tip culture of two cultivars ('Matnami' and 'Shinhwangmi'). The survival rate and growth of shoot-tip explant was also investigated under the presence or absence of light (blue and red LED = 7:3, 150±5 μmol·m-2·s-1 PPFD) during minimal-growth in vitro conservation at 15℃. Vine length, vine diameter, fresh weight and dry weight were enhanced without callusing of explant in the MS medium supplemented with 0.2-0.5 mg·L-1 BA. The growth of single-node and shoot-tip explants were significantly enhanced with the increase of vine length, number of leaf, number of root, fresh weight, and dry weight in the solid medium containing 5% sucrose and 0.2 mg·L-1 BA. Vine elongation of shoot-tip explants were highest in the liquid medium containing 3% sucrose than the solid medium. The survival rate of minimal-growth in vitro conservation was 100% in 5 months under the presence of light (LED, 150±5 μmol·m-2·s-1 PPFD) at 15℃, but the explants in dark condition died in 3 months. The light was absolutely necessary for the in vitro conservation under minimal-growth conditions of virus-free sweet potato plantlets at 15℃, and the high density of explants (10 plantlets per Petri Dish) was increased the efficiency of mass conservation.

  • To improve the productivity of peroxidase (POD) of cell line SP-47 derived from cell suspension cultures of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L) Lam.cv White Star), we optimized culture conditions including the composition and concentration of plant growth regulators and carbon source, and the cell inoculum size. When one g (fr wt) of cells was inoculated into 50 mL TL medium supplemented with l mg/L 2,4-D and 30g/L sucrose in 300 mL Erlenmeyer flask at 25$^{\circ}C$ in the dark (100rpm), the POD activity per g cell dry wt was maximized to be about 6,800 units after 25 days of subculture, which was about 30 times higher than that of intact roots of horseradish plants grown in the greenhouse, but the cell growth was maximum after 15 days of subculture. The protein content per g cell dry wt maintained almost plateau and after 25 days of subculture decreased as culture Proceeded further whereas the POD specific activity (unit/mg protein) was about two times higher after subculture and continuously increased from 12 days to the end of cultures (40 days). The POD isozyme patterns showed almost the same regardless of cell growth stage, but some acidic isozymes were slightly increased after 25 days of subculture. These results indicate that POD activity in suspension cultures of sweet potato is closely associated with cell growth and stresses derived from cell culture renditions and medium depletion. Due to its high POD activity the SPL47cell line seems to be suitable for the mass production of POD.

  • To investigate geomorphic development of alluvial plains and climatic environment change during the late Holocene carbon dating, soil organic carbon analysis and humus analysis of sediments from alluvial plain of Hampyeongcheon basin were performed. The lowest peat layer was formed under warm and humid climates, which is considered to correspond to the Atlantic period in the Holocene. Yellowish brown sandy clay layer was deposited in the natural levee, which we think were deposited in the generally warm and dry climates. The carbon dating age is 1,879-1,532 BC, and this period correspond to the Sub-boreal period in the Holocene. Light brown clay layer is assumed to have been deposited in transitional environment from the natural levee to the back marsh. The climatic environment was warm and humid, which is considered as transitional period from the Sub-boreal to the Sub-Atlantic in the Holocene. Light yellowish brown and light brown clay layer of the upper part are regarded as sediments of the back marsh. Light yellowish brown clay layer was deposited in the cold and dry climates, which is considered to correspond to the Sub-Atlantic period in the Holocene. Light brown clay layer was deposited in the warm and dry climates. The carbon dating age is 211-427 AD, this period corresponds to the Post Roman Warm Period in the Holocene.
