Level and Origin of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Sediments from Ulsan Bay, Korea

  • Surface sediments(0~5 cm) were sampled from 22 stations in Ulsan Bay, one of the most highly industrialized regions in Korea, in November 2000. The sediment samples were analyzed for their polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon(PAH) content using a gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometer detector(GC/MSD). The total PAH concentrations in the sediments varied from 14 to 7108 ng/g dry weight with a mean value of 1052 ng/g dry weight. The level of carcinogenic PAHs ranged from 6 to 2396 ng/g dry weight with a mean value of 433 ng/g dry weight. The highest PAH concentrations in the sediments from Ulsan Bay were found at Station U8, whereas the lowest levels were observed at Stations U2 and U 17. The PAH distribution exhibited a decreasing gradient from the inner basin to the outer bay. The predominant contributors to the aromatic ring groups of the 16 PAHs were four- and five-ring groups, such as fluoranthene, pyrene, benzo[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzor[b]fluoranthene, benzor[k]fluoranthene and benzo[a]pyrene, while two- and three-ring aromatics, like naphthalene, acenapthylene, acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene and anthracene, only exhibited a low concentration. The molecular indices for phenanthrene/anthracene and fluoranthen/pyrene were used to Identify the origin of the PAH contamination in the sediments. The results indicated that the PAH contamination in Ulsan Bay was mostly Pyrolytic in origin with a Petrogenic input adjacent to Ulsan and Jangsuengpo harbor.

Response of Soybean to Elevated $\textrm{CO}_2$ Concentrations and Temperatures at Two Levels of Nitrogen Application

  • Effects of ambient and elevated $\textrm{CO}_2$ and high temperature, and their interactions with zero and applied nitrogen supply (NN-no nitrogen and AN-applied nitrogen) were studied on soybean (Glycine max L.) in 2001. In this experiment, elevated $\textrm{CO}_2$ (650 $\mu\textrm{mol}.\textrm{mol}^{-1}$) and temperature (+$5^{\circ}$) increased total dry mass at final harvest by 125% and 119% and seed weight per plant by 57% and 105% for NN and AN plants, respectively. Although the influence of temperature and temperature x $\textrm{CO}_2$ were not significant, the influences of $\textrm{CO}_2$ concentration and temperature x $\textrm{CO}_2$ concentration were significant on total dry weight and seed weight, respectively. In particular, seed weight per plant was increased, while weight per one hundred seed weight was decreased with elevated $\textrm{CO}_2$ and temperature. The N supply increased biomass and seed weight per soybean plants. The results of this study suggest that the long-term adaptation of soybean growth at an elevated $\textrm{CO}_2$ concentration and high temperature might potentially result in a increase in dry matter production and yield.

증발기의 압력강하에 대한 상대습도의 영향 (Effects of Relative Humidity on the Evaporator Pressure Drop)

  • It is well known that some key parameters, such as evaporating temperature, refrigerant mass flow rate, face velocity and inlet air temperature, have significant influence on the evaporator performance. However performance studies related to a humid environment have been very scarce. It is demonstrated that the refrigerant mass flow rate, heat flux, water condensing rate and air outlet temperature of the evaporator significantly increase with air inlet relative humidity. As the air inlet relative humidity increases, the latent and total heat transfer rates increase, but the sensible heat transfer rate decreases. The purpose of this study is to provide experimental data on the effect of air inlet relative humidity on the air and refrigerant side pressure drop characteristics for a slit fin-tube heat exchanger. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of inlet refrigerant saturation temperature of 7 $^{\circ}C$ and mass flux varied from 150 to 250 kg/$m^2$s. The condition of air was dry bulb temperature of 27$^{\circ}C$, air Velocity Varied from 0.38 to 1.6 m/s. Experiments Showed that air Velocity decreased 8.7% on 50% of relative humidity 40% of that at degree of superheat of 5$^{\circ}C$, which resulted that pressure drop of air and refrigerant was decreased 20.8 and 8.3% for 50% of relative humidity as compared to 40%, respectively.

위성의 개념설계 절차 (Conceptual Design Procedure of Satellites)

  • 위성의 전력계, 질량, 비용 등과 같은 형상 요소들의 개략적인 제원 도출은 본격적인 위성개발 전 반드시 수행되어야 할 중요한 과정이다. 본 논문에서는 최근 개발된 국내외 위성 개념설계 도구들의 주요한 특징들을 조사하고, 이를 바탕으로 초기 개념설계 절차를 정리하였다. 위성 개념설계는 탑재체와 임무에 근거하여 필요한 전력을 추정하고 위성운용에 필요한 태양전지판과 배터리와 같은 전력계를 추정한다. 다음으로 기존 위성들의 데이터베이스를 기반으로 탑재체질량에 따른 전체 위성 및 주요 서브시스템의 질량을 결정한다. 비용 역시 복잡한 계산 없이 기존 위성들의 데이터베이스를 바탕으로 대략적인 추정이 가능하다.

GROUNDWATER RECHARGE ESTIMATION USING ARCGIS-CHLORIDE MASS BALANCE APPROACH

  • Groundwater recharge is defined in an addition of water to groundwater reservoir. Recently, many people have been moving to the Edwards aquifer and urban and agricultural industry have been expending. Hydrologists and water planning managers concern about insufficient groundwater amounts and irrigation water price variability. In this paper, I focus on estimates of local recharge volumes and quantify preferential flow through GIS technique. Chloride Mass Balance (CMB) and hydrochemical components have been widely applied to recharge rate and evaluate flow paths. The CMB method is based on relationship between wet-dry chloride deposition data and Rainfall data. These data are manipulated using ArcGIS. Especially, hydrochemical concentration distribution is good index for groundwater residence times or flow paths such as $[Mg^{2+}]/[Ca^{2+}],[Cl]$ and log$([Ca^{2+}]+[Mg^{2+}])/[Na^+]$. Well information such as hydrological-hydrochemical data are imported into ArcGIS and manipulated by interpolation techniques. For each potentiometric surface and water quality, point data are converted to spatial data through each Kriging and Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) techniques.

마찰감쇠기가 있는 블레이드디스크의 강제진동해석 (Forced Response Analyses of a Bladed Disk with Friction Dampers)

  • 블레이드 디스크에는 진동 저감을 위해 종종 마찰 감쇠기가 같은 부가적인 감쇠 요소가 부착된다. 마찰 감쇠기가 있는 블레이드 디스크의 강제 진동 해석 시스템이 개발 및 검증되었다. 비선형 진동 해석 방법인 다중 조화 방법과 주기 구조물의 효율적인 해석을 위한 주기 경계 조건이 사용되었으며 집중된 구조 비선형성인 마찰 감쇠기가 있는 구조물의 거동을 모사하기 위하여 가상 질량법으로 얻어진 모드 형상이 사용되었다. 이러한 모드와 일반적인 고유 모드의 상대적인 수렴성이 비교되었다.

완주지역의 VOCs 배출특성에 따른 공단지역과 일반지역의 기여도 분석 (VOCs Emission Characteristics and Mass Contribution Analysis at Wanju Industrial Area)

  • Concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) measured from the local industrial sources in Wanju industrial complex during June $2007{\sim}January$ 2008. The samples were collected from the primary sources (6 emission points) in 4 major factories in Wanju industrial complex as well as two general sources in Wanju County to elucidate the abundances of speciated VOCs and their spacial and temporal distributions depending on source bases. Industrial sources are as follows; fabricated metal manufacture, motor vehicle manufacture, rubber and plastic manufacture, and chemical manufacture factories. Two general source samples were collected from gasoline gas station and dry cleaning shop in urban area. In order to understand the near source influence at receptor, samples from the two receptor sites (one is at center of the industrial complex and the other site is at distance residential area downwind from the center) were collected with sample canister, and analyzed by using GC/MSD. The concentrations from different sources were compared and discussed. The mass contributions of the speciated VOCs to total VOCs measured from industrial sources and ambient ai r at two receptors were presented and discussed.

석회석 광산의 암반 분류에 적용된 RMR, Q-system, GSI 간의 상관성 연구 (A Study of the Relationships among RMR, Q-system and GSI Applied to Classify Rock Mass of Limestone Mine)

  • 석회석 광산 갱도 내 22 곳의 측정지점을 선정하여 RMR, Q-system, GSI와 같은 암반분류법을 적용하였다. SRF와 $J_w$를 1로 한 수정 Q(Q')와 지하수 조건을 '완전 건조'로 하고 불연속면의 방향 보정을 '0'으로 한 수정 RMR(${RMR_{89}}^{\prime}$)도 계산하였다. Q-기본 RMR, Q-최종 RMR, ${GSI-RMR_{89}}^{\prime}$, GSI-Q' 간의 상관관계를 분석한 결과 ${GSI-RMR_{89}}^{\prime}$ 의 상관성이 가장 높은 것으로 나타났다. 계수비를 기초로 파괴 변형률을 구했으며, 대부분의 측정지점이 '낮은 파괴 변형률' 등급에 속하는 것으로 나타나 안정한 것으로 평가되었다.

Optimization of radiation shields made of Fe and Pb for the spent nuclear fuel transport casks

  • Recommendations are given to improve the efficiency of radiation protection of transport casks for SNF transportation. The attenuation of ${\gamma}$-quanta of long-lived isotopes 134Cs, 137mBa(137Cs), 154Eu and 60Co by optimizing the thicknesses and arrangement of layers of Fe and Pb radiation shields of transport casks is studied. The fixed radiation shielding mass (fixed mass thickness) is chosen as the main optimization criterion. The effect of the placement order of Fe and Pb layers in a combined two-layer radiation shield with an equivalent thickness of 30 cm is studied in detail. It is shown that with the same mass thicknesses of the Fe and Pb layers, the placement of Fe in the first layer, and Pb - in the second one provides more than twofold attenuation of ${\gamma}$-quanta compared to the reverse placement: Pb - in the first layer, Fe - in the second. The increase in the efficiency of attenuation of ${\gamma}$-quanta for TC with combined shielding of Fe and Pb is shown to be achieved by designing the first layer of radiation shielding around the canister with SNF from Fe of the maximum possible thickness.

Mucosa-Associated Lymphoid Tissue Lymphoma of the Labial Minor Salivary Glands: Case Report

  • A 74-year-old female presented with a complaint of dry mouth, continuous spontaneous burning sensation in the tongue, and asymptomatic submucosal soft tissue mass on both sides of the lower labial mucosa. She refused to undergo total excision of the mass due to concern about the possibility of complications such as nerve damage because of the large size of the mass. As her clinical features and magnetic resonance imaging indicated the possibility of Sjögren's syndrome, a biopsy of the minor salivary gland of the right lower lip was performed. Consequently, she was diagnosed with mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. Although the patient had typical signs and symptoms of Sjögren's syndrome, the histopathological result of MALT lymphoma made it impossible to determine whether the patient had a history of Sjögren's syndrome. For patients with risk factors for MALT lymphoma, such as Sjögren's syndrome, a biopsy of the labial minor salivary gland with immunohistochemical staining can be helpful in the diagnosis of not only Sjögren's syndrome but also MALT lymphoma.
