In this paper, we propose a study is to prepare basic data for integrated health promotion education by preventing dry mouth and dry eyes through lifestyle management. From October 7 to 17, 2022, a total of 516 respondents who voluntarily agreed and responded through a self-written structured questionnaire were statistically analyzed for university students in their 20s across the country. As for the factor of feeling dry mouth among the living habits of the study subjects, the more smoking per day, the higher(8.41±2.041) and very high(7.75±2.927) felt dry mouth(p=.015), and the time spent using smart phones. The shorter this was, the lower(1.16±0.784) and very low(1.83±1.672) felt dry mouth(p=.022). The main factors contributing to dry mouth and dry eyes were dry eyes (odds ratio 3.651, p=.000), and high smoking(odds ratio 0.916, p=.038), and the more you use your smart phone (odds ratio 0.256, p=.004), the more you feel dry mouth. When feeling dry eyes, they felt dry mouth more(odds ratio 4.002, p=.000), and the more they exercised, the more dry eyes they felt(odds ratio 1.600, p=.009). As a result, since dry mouth and dry eyes appear as common inconveniences, it was found that lifestyle management is necessary to maintain and promote a healthy life. Therefore, it is proposed to build an integrated health platform that can improve the quality of life and implement personalized health management programs.
Purpose: The study was performed to compare the difference of non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT) with alignment or steep fitting of soft contact lens in normal and dry eyes. Methods: Total 40 eyes (aged 20~30 years) were classified to the normal (n=20) or dry eye group (n=20) by the diagnosis methods for dry eyes and worn soft contact lens (polymacon material) with alignment or steep fitting. NIBUTs of lens wearers were separately measured at the points of before wearing, immediately after wearing and after stabilization of tear film. Results: With alignment fitting, averaged NIBUT in the dry eye group after stabilization of tear film was not significantly different from that of the normal eye group. However, averaged NIBUTs in the normal and dry eyes had significant difference when measured immediately after lens wearing. However, the number of eyes having NIBUT less than 4.0 second was 30% higher compared to the number of normal eyes with steep fitting when measured immediately after wearing. Some shorten NIBUT in dry eyes with steep fitting was also shown after stabilization of tear film. Conclusions: These results suggest that wearing soft contact lens in dry eyes differently affect tear film compared to normal eyes. Thus, dry eyes need more advertent fitting for contact lens wearing because of unstable tear film.

The purpose of this study is descriptive survey to quality of life by dry eyes experience in university students. The Korean version of the National eye institute visual functioning questionnaire (NEI-VFQ) was used to evaluate the quality of life. As a result of the study, 18.4% of the participants were diagnosed with dry eyes, and 63.2% experienced subjective dry eyes experience. The findings showed that the factors influencing the visual quality of life was wearing glasses, and the explanatory power for this 13.6%. Further research is needed considering the length of wearing glasses, contact lenses and severity of dry eyes.
Purpose: The study was performed to compare the differences in lens rotation, lens movement by blinking and lens centration with alignment or steep fitting of soft contact lens in normal and dry eyes. Methods: Total 40 eyes (aged 20~30 years) were classified into the normal (n=20) or dry eye group (n=20) by the diagnosis methods for dry eyes and worn soft contact lens (polymacon material) with alignment fitting or steep fitting. Lens rotation, lens movement by blinking and lens centration were separately measured immediately after lens wearing and after stabilization of tear film and compared by fitting states of soft contact lenses. Results: With steep fitting of soft contact lens in dry eyes, averaged lens rotation immediately after lens wearing was not significantly different from that of the normal eye group with alignment fitting however, lens rotation after stabilization in dry eyes was significantly larger than that in normal eyes. Any significant difference in lens movement by blinking was not shown in normal eyes. However, lens movement by blinking in dry eyes was increased with steep fitting. The range of lens centration on cornea in normal eyes with alignment fitting was more vertically distributed. On the other hand, the range of lens centration on cornea in dry eyes with alignment fitting was more horizontally distributed. Lens centration was shown to be changed by stabilization of tear film. That is, lens centrations were somewhat vertically widespread immediately after lens wearing and restrictively distributed in horizontal direction, respectively, with steep fitting in dry eyes. Conclusions: These results suggested that lens movements and centration in dry eyes were different from those of normal eyes. Especially, those differences between normal and dry eyes were much bigger with steep fitting of soft contact lenses. Thus, those differences should be considered for the comfortable and safe fitting of soft contact lens in dry eyes.

Background: Dry eye disease (DED) cannot be diagnosed by a single test because it is a multifactorial disorder of the ocular surface. Although studies on various dry eye tests (DETs) in dogs have been reported, standard criteria have not been established except for the Schirmer tear test 1 (STT-1). Objectives: To establish reference values for DETs in dogs with normal STT-1 values (≥ 15 mm/min) and to analyze the correlation between DETs. Methods: The STT-1 was performed in 10 healthy Beagle dogs (20 eyes). After 20 min, interferometry (IF) for estimating the lipid layer thickness (LLT) of the tear film, tear meniscus height (TMH), non-invasive tear breakup time (NIBUT), and meibomian gland loss rate of the upper eyelid (MGLRU) and lower eyelid (MGLRL), were measured using an ocular surface analyzer. Results: Mean values for STT-1, TMH, and NIBUT were as follows: 21.7 ± 3.4 mm/min, 0.41 ± 0.21 mm, and 19.1 ± 9.5 sec, respectively. The most frequent LLT range, measured by IF, was 30-80 nm (11 eyes), followed by 80 nm (5 eyes) and 80-140 nm (4 eyes). MGLRU ≤ 25% was measured in 11 eyes and 26%-50% in 9 eyes; MGLRL ≤ 25% in 8 eyes and 26%-50% in 12 eyes. Besides positive correlation between TMH and NIBUT (P = 0.038), there were no significant associations between DETs. Conclusions: Data obtained in this study provided normative references that could be useful for diagnosing DED and for further research into correlation between DETs in dogs with DED.
Dry eye symptoms can occur by various environmental exposure. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between eye symptom especially dry eye and sunblocks. Study subjects were total 30 (28 male, 2 female) and NIBUT, McMonnies dry eye questionnaire, subjective questionnaire were performed. NIBUT after rubbing sunblocks was decreased compared to that of not-rubbing. Sunblocks C showed the largest difference of NIBUT value and was chosen most uncomfortable sunblocks in subjective questionnaire. Half of the subjects (15) felt eyes discomfort after rubbing sunblocks and showed larger McMonnies dry eye questionnaire score than other subjects. The same result was founded about dry eye suspect criterion. Both showed borderline significant relation(p=0.049, p=0.051). This study suggested that sunblock could cause damage to the eyes and related to dry eye when rubbing sunblock around eyes. Because digital environmental factors could affect stimulus and modify the eyes, a convergence study will be required for additional research.

Purpose: This study was assessed to investigate the change of subjective and/or objective symptoms and the light transmittance of lens caused by the use longer than recommended wearing time of daily disposable circle contact lenses (circle lens) in dry eyes. Methods: Three daily disposable circle lenses made of etafilcon A, hilafilcon B, and nelfilcon A were applied on 30 dry eyes with smaller tear volume than normal eyes in their twenties free from any eye diseases by when subjects complained any kind of discomfort. On the first and the last days of lens wearing, subjective discomfort, blinking rate, lens centration on corneal surface and visible light transmittance of lens were recorded at every case and compared. Results: The circle lens wearers complained subjective discomfort and quit the lens wearing when they wore the circle lens longer than 10 hours even though there were some difference according to the lens materials of daily disposable circle lens. However, around 20% of dry eyes could wear the circle lens made of non-ionic materials longer than 40 hours. Dry eyes showed most sensitive feeling of subjective discomfort against the circle lens made of etafilcon A among three different lens materials. On the last day of lens wearing, the representative subjective discomforts were irritation, stiffness, dryness and tiredness. When the subjects wore circle lens more than the recommended time, blinking rate was significantly increased about 20~30% regardless of lens materials when it compared with the values right after lens wearing. On the last day of lens wearing, the vertical direction of lens centration was shifted to pupil center however, its distribution in horizontal direction was wide compared with the distribution right after lens wearing. Especially, the centration of etafilcon A lens was unstable. Furthermore, the visible light transmittance of 3 different circle lenses in dry eyes has significantly been reduced around 15% averaged. Conclusions: From these results, it was known that the increase of dryness and stiffness caused by overusage of daily disposable circle lens induced excess irritation and decreased visible light transmittance and caused significant more blinking, which provoked lens decentration. It was also revealed that dry eyes showed sensitive reaction subjectively and objectively against the overusage of circle lens made of high water content/ionic lens material even there were some difference of the degree depending on the individual and the lens material. Thus, this research can be suggested as the basic reference for the education about some unexpected problems and the side effect caused by the wearing of circle lens in dry eyes.
This study was conducted to survey the subjective symptoms of workers and users in selected 5 public facility groups(offices, performance halls, private crammers, wedding halls and indoor sports facilities), located in Seoul, Daejeon and Chungnam Province. Overall as subjective symptoms that were worse at public facilities than those usual, following responses appeared: I have a headache, My eyes are dry or feel irritated or itching, I feel eyestrain or my eyes are bloodshot, My nose was stuffy, I have a cough, I feel dry in the throat or inflammation happens, I feel oppressed in the breast or sometimes have difficulty in breathing, My skin gets dry, My skin is itching or has some spots, I feel like vomiting, I feel easily tired or sleep, I lose my concentration and I feel my memory is falling, I feel dizzy, I feel depressed, I feel being sharp and feel tension, I feel muscular pain or stiffness on shoulders, back and neck. Also, we compare with normal subjective symptoms scores and subjective symptoms scores in public facilities. The highest subjective symptoms score in at normal was my skin gets dry(2.35 points) and subjective symptoms score in public facilities was I feel eyestrain or my eyes are bloodshot(2.61 points).

This study aimed to identify the prevalence of dry eye, sleep disorder, depression and factors related to dry eye among the elderly living in the community. Study subjects were 149 elderly, 65 years of age or older from nearby people, acquaintances and community elderly-related centers that researchers could access. Data collection period was from June 1 to August 31, 2021. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, ANOVA, χ2-test, and multiple logistic regression. The results showed that dry eyes in elderly people were statistically significant according to age (χ2=4.50, p=.034), occupation (χ2=7.14, p=.008), chronic diseases (χ2=6.59, p=.010), drugs (χ2=4.86, p=.027), eye surgery (χ2=6.02, p=.014), and sleep disorders (χ2=7.29, p=.007). Multiple logistic regression revealed that dry eyes were associated with sleep disorders (OR=2.45, 95% CI=1.17-5.13). Therefore, for the management and prevention of dry eyes in the elderly, there is a need for nursing intervention and strategy that can find the causes of sleep disorders and improve the quality of sleep.
