This study identified the materials and construction methods of 'Old Wall' in 13 villages which were designated as National Registered Cultural Heritage at the time of designation and examined the their structural changes based on field survey. The results are as follows: First, the 'Old Wall' consisted of 10 Soil-Stone Wall and 5 Stone Wall. At the time of designation, Stone Wall, which was built irregularly by dry-construction of natural stones, is similar in shape, but Soil-Stone Wall showed difference by the construction method of making used stones, joints, and faces. Second, the study extracted the changes of 'Old Wall' by repair and examined the changes of construction methods as well as the substitution and addition of materials of structure. The wall-roof was built with cement roof-tile and asbestos slate which have the advantage improve durability and cost-effectiveness. In addition, tile-mouth soil was added to korean traditional roof-tile to prevent rainwater from flowing in. Besides, to improve constructional convenience, the natural stone of the wall-body was replaced with blast stone, float stone and cut stone. Cement block, cement brick and cement mortar were frequently used to repair as well. As Soil-Stone Wall was transformed from irregular pattern-construction to comb pattern-construction and wet-construction was changed to dry-construction, it caused landscape and structural problems. Also, the layer of cement mortar applied to wall-foundation blocked the flow of rainwater that was induced by dry-construction of natural stones. Third, the study regarded that the problem with the repair of 'Old Wall' may occur as it is located in living space, because the owner of the wall could repair for the minor damages without technical knowledge. In addition, it is difficult for repair companies in charge of maintenance of Cultural Heritage to supply local materials, and it is differential construction specifications are not applied.

Attention has increasingly focused on the pollutant load discharged from rural area since the enforcement of total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) in korea. As one of the methods to control the inflow of pollutant load during wet weather events, local governments are attempting to apply non-point source control facility. To design those facilities appropriately, it is essential to understand the runoff characteristics of pollutants such as TSS, $BOD_5$, $COD_{Cr}$, TP and TN. In the paper, the quantitative analyses for pollutant runoff characteristics were examined in a small rural watershed with the area of about 53 hectares. For a dry weather day and wet weather events, variation patterns of dry weather flow and runoff characteristics of wet weather flows were monitored and investigated. The runoff model using XP-SWMM reflecting the landuse types of the watershed in detail was simulated to perform the sensitivity analyses for several factors influencing on their hydrograph and pollutographs. As a result, for the case of medium and small rainfall events (i. e. total rainfall of 35.8 and 17.5 mm), the impervious area including green house, roof and road which covers relatively low portion of total area (i. e. 16%) caused substantial first flush and the majority of total runoff load. Therefore, it has been concluded that the runoff characteristics of each pollutant and distribution of impervious area should be considered for the establishment of the control strategy of non-point pollutant runoff at a rural area.
The technology of fluidized bed to use dry sorbent can be new technology that reduce the operating cost and make efficient operation. Therefore, this study investigated $CO_2$ control by dry sorbents with operating variables in a fluidized bed, compared with fixed bed for $CO_2$ adsorption capacity and pressure drop, and presented the $CO_2$ adsorption capacity of activated carbon, molecular sieve 5A, molecular sieve 13X, and activated alumina. As the results of this study, the basic data could be achieved for operation of fluidized bed process, and fluidized bed process presented relatively high $CO_2$ adsorption capacity and low pressure drop with the increase of gas velocity. In addition, molecular sieve 5A showed 1.1~3.0-fold later breakthrough point and 1.1~2.7-fold higher adsorption capacity than the other dry sorbents.

The objective of the present study is to establish a straightforward mixture proportioning procedure for structural lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC), and evaluate the selection range of the targeted dry density of concrete against the designed concrete compressive strength. In developing this procedure, mathematical models were formulated based on a nonlinear regression analysis over 347 data sets and two boundary conditions of the absolute volume and dry density of concrete. The proposed procedure demonstrated the appropriate water-to-cement ratio and dry density of concrete to achieve the designed strength decrease with the increase in volumetric ratio of coarse aggregates. This trend was more significant in all-LWAC than in sand-LWAC. Overall, the selection range of the dry density of LWAC exists within a certain range according to the designed strength, which can be obtained using the proposed procedure.
Dry and wet test methods established by Korean industrial standards to estimate opening size of 3 types of geotextile which are widely used for filter of plastic drain board in Korea are performed to evaluate characteristics of the test methods and to compare the test results. Judging from test results, dry method is a relatively poor test, having lots of problems causing many errors but a simple-quick test. Wet method is a very specific test avoiding many of the problems of dry method such as electrostatic charges, trapping in the geotextiles and so on. However, one of wet test methods, KS K ISO 12956, takes long time to complete a test and is too strict to handle loss of granular material. Generally, opening size of a geotextile by wet test method is smaller than that of dry test method. Especially, opening size by KS F 2126 which is called hydrodynamic method but at present is not used anymore is similar to or smaller than that by KS K ISO 12956 method.

Various problems regarding the wet floor method such as its complicated process and waste of thermal storage have been raised, but the usage of dry floor recommended for long-life housing has declined due to lack of confidence on the performance of dry floor. The purpose of this study is to secure the credibility of dry floor. Under this purpose, this study considered precedent studies and established directions to secure the performance of long-life housing infill, and thus, 9 performance items (Impact sound, Smoothness, thermal comfort, sensation hardness while walking, falling safety, impact resistance, local compression load, local strength and strain at heating) were drawn. In addition, the experiment was carried out for 5 performances except for legal performance, some dry floor performances and whole spatial performance. As a result, an appropriate result from all performances except was obtained. The performance of dry floor was verified for each item from these results and it is expected to use such results as basic data on dry floor in the future.
The glacial tills and shales in Midwestern states of the USA often show strength degradation after construction. They are often in need of applying soil modification techniques to remediate their strength degradation with weathering process. This study investigated the weathering durability of these natural soils and biopolymer treated soils by comparing direct shear test results for wet-dry and wet-freeze-thaw-dry cycled specimens. The tests showed that untreated glacial tills maintained only 62% and 50% initial shear strength after eight wet-dry cycles and eight wet-freeze-thaw-dry cycles, respectively. These untreated soils could not withstand by themselves after 16 weathering cycles. The same soils treated with 1.5% (by dry weight) food-grade Xanthan gum maintained 140% and 88% initial shear strength of untreated soils after 16 weathering cycles for wet-dry cycles and wet-freeze-thaw-dry cycles, respectively. The same soils treated with 1.5% (by dry weight) Gellan gum maintained 82% and 60% initial shear strength of untreated ones after 16 weathering cycles, respectively. Similar results were obtained for crushed shales, manifesting that the biopolymerization method may be adopted as a new eco-friendly method to enhance the weathering durability of these problematic soils of glacial tills and shales.

A recent earthquake on the Korean Peninsula caused much damage to masonry buildings, and research on performance evaluation has been underway. A masonry building is generally constructed using wet construction and is affected by temperature, which reduces the efficiency of the construction. In this study, we propose a dry construction technique for assembling concrete blocks without using mortar and evaluated its performance through experimental and analytical research. To evaluate the performance, experiments were carried out for the prismatic compressive strength, direct terminal strength, and diagonal tensile strength of the dry construction wall. The adequacy of the cross section shape was also reviewed through FEM analysis. The results show that the compressive strength and diagonal tensile strength could exert a certain intensity or higher. Furthermore, the H-type module of a key block acted as a shear key for the entire concrete block, which resulted in excellent shear strength performance. In addition, the shape and thickness of the main block have a major effect on the strength performance of each block. Therefore, an optimal shape and the proposed dry construction method could be applied to replace the wet method by studying the construction or seismic performance of the proposed method.

A novel dry and wet deposition collector, which can overcome the several problems such as water evaporation cartridge cracks and high costs founded in the previous collector systems, has been constructed. ENVI-18 SPE adsorption cartridge has been used to measure atmospheric deposition of polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). A surrogate surface, consisted of water and methanol, was filled in the dry deposition funnel to simulate dry deposition onto water surface. A water supply system in order to compensat evaporation of the surrogate surface was used and it was consisted of a piston pump, a tubing pump, a overflow tube and a chamber system. A novel water vaporizing system to supply water onto the wet SPE cartridge system with a constant flow rate was developed. The novel water vaporizing system, consisted of a vacuum pump, a water supply reserviour and tube and a mini space heater, could prevent the PAHs adsorption cartridge cracks occurred in the previous collector and effectively adsorb PAHs. The novel dry and wet deposition collector showed a good adsorption, desorption, and recovery rates of PAHs. By reducing the number of pumps used and employing polypyopylene (PP) instead of teflon as a material of collection funnel, the total construction costs were much reduced as compared with the previous dry and wet deposition collectors.
A prototype of a Concrete-Faced Rock-fill Dam (CFRD) was constructed to evaluate the behavior of the materials in each zone within the dam. The tested materials, selected based on their grain size distribution, were used in constructing the prototype dam with layers of variable thickness, settlement ratio, and water content. We investigated the suitability of various values of hydraulic conductivity, water content, dry unit weight, and settlement ratio for zones within the dam. The test results revealed the relationships between the number of passes and the dry unit weight, between the dry unit weight and the settlement ratio, and between the settlement ratio and the number of passes. This paper focuses on the relationship between hydraulic conductivity and the number of passes. The results of the present analysis could be used to establish reasonable compaction standards for materials used in dam construction.
