In this research, in order to study insulation effect of commercial XPS and recycled PE aggregates for prevention of frost heave in the roadbed of railroad track from the freezing temperature, model tests were carried out in the large freezing room. For this, thermal conductivities were measured for various dry densities, water contents, temperatures and mixing ratios of PE aggregates. From the tests, it can be seen that thermal conductivities of roadbed decrease with the increase of the ratio of mixed PE aggregates. However it was sensitive to the changes of temperature and water content due to the amount of water in the voids. From the model test of railroad track, it can be seen that the time to reach $0^{\circ}C$ was longer for XPS than that for the PE aggregates. Also the test shows best insulation effect can be achieved when XPS board was installed above the PE aggregate layer rather than the opposite order.

This paper describes the experimental studies carried out to determine the properties of fresh and hardened concrete with Recycled Plastic Waste (RPW) as a partial replacement material for fine aggregates. In the experimental study, RPW was used for replacing river sand and manufactured sand (M sand) aggregates in concrete. The replacement level of fine aggregates was ranging from 5% to 20% by volume with an increment of 5%. M40 grade of concrete with water cement ratio of 0.40 was used in this study. Two different types of RPW were used, and they are (i) un-activated RPW and (ii) activated RPW. The activated RPW was obtained by alkali activation of un-activated RPW using NaOH solution. The hardened properties of the concrete determined were dry density, compressive strength, split tensile strength, flexural strength and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV). The properties of the concrete with river sand, M sand, activated RPW and un-activated RPW were compared and inferences were drawn. The effect of activation using NaOH solution was investigated using FT-IR study. The micro structural examination of hardened concrete was carried out using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The test results show that the strength of concrete with activated RPW was more than that of un-activated RPW. From the results, it is evident that it is feasible to use 5% un-activated RPW and 15% activated RPW as fine aggregates for making concrete without affecting the strength properties.

In order to drive on road safely, the type of road design and construction is basically needed to optimize driver's safety and vehicle performance. Although the heavy traffic highways were built by reflecting these factors, the national highways and local roads have still taken a lot of problems. In this study, we analyzed the behavior characteristics of a vehicle according to the speed variation of the vehicle using the PC-Crash program for the traffic accidents reconfiguration at GULUN interchange located Hongcheon in Gangwon Province. the conditions outlet surface of the road for analysis were dry road surface, wet road surface and icy road surface. As a result, we identified the fact that the friction coefficient of road surface and the speed of vehicle affected to vehicle behavior characteristics of outlet shape in GULUN interchange, and showed the possibility that we can verify a problem about road design through to this simulation in advance.

The Wonhyo Tunnel on KTX railroad line is a section of latest concerns from domestic environmental NGOs, which focus on potential destruction of ecosystem or the like due to ever-depleted swamp water at about 300m upward from the tunnel under construction. As a result of study, out of all swamps in the vicinity of the tunnel, it was found that Mujechi 1st and 2nd swamps have been getting smaller in their area little by little since 50 years ago primarily under the influence of eroded streams around lower swamp and even ever-increasing annual mean temperature. As the result of monitoring about swamp before work, it was found that swamp water depends absolutely on amount of rainfall. Besides, the results of monitoring during work also didn't show any leakage generated in the tunnel during and after excavation works with regard to a wheat field swamp in the most vicinity of the tunnel (80m away). On the other hand, it was found that the range affected by ground water sink in tunnel section without grouting process amounted to about 100m around the tunnel, which indicates that such ground water sink has no significant impact upon most of swamps near the tunnel. As the result of testing by two well tracer test around swamps, it was noted that swamp water didn't run out from the bottom of swamp even with adjacent ground water level sunk in factitious ways. And the results of physical survey showed that swamp kept saturated even in dry season when ground water level becomes lower than the bottom of swamp. Therefore, even supposing that ground water level becomes sunk due to tunnel works, it is estimated that the water level of swamps would be still kept owing to impervious layer(peat beds).
Generally CSOs (Combined Sewer Overflows) are regarded as one of the most serious nonpoint pollution source in the urban watershed, Particularly, the water quality of the Oncheon stream is seriously affected by CSOs because the capacity of interception sewer system connected to the Suyoung wastewater treatment plant is too small to intercept most storm water discharges. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of nonpoint source on an urban stream with regards to combined sewer system and separate sewer system using GIS (Geographic Information System) and SWMM (Storm Water Management Model), and to provide an insight for the management of urban stream water quality. In order to consider the effect of CSOs on the receiving water quality, the flow divider element in SWMM was applied. The model calibration and verification were performed by the measured data of quantity and quality on the Oncheon stream. The quantity data acquired from the Suyoung wastewater treatment plant were also used for this procedure. In case of separate sewer system, the modeling results showed the increased tendency in streamflow compared with the combined system in dry weather, In addition, the water quality is remarkably improved in rainfall events at the separate condition. The results imply that the construction of separate sewer system should be taken into first consideration to restore the quality and quantity of water in urban streams.

This aim of study was to investigate the characteristics of discharge of pollutants as well as the correlation between flow rate and water quality constituents in a combined sewer system according to the characteristics of rainfall. For the loading rates for each pollutant, the median concentrations of all pollutants except T-N was increased when a CSO took place. The loading rates of BOD, COD, SS, T-N, T-P, Cu and Zn at the CSOs were 328-1255, 25-129, 83-2009, 4-12, 14-51, 5-11 and 5-13 times higher than the DWF (Dry Whether Flow), respectively. Especially, SS loading rate was found to be highest in all pollutants. On the other hand, the range of the first flush coefficient, b for water quality constituents such as BOD, COD, SS, T-N, T-P, Cu and Zn were 0.537-0.878, 0.589-0.888, 0.516-1.062, 0.852-1.031, 0.649-0.954, 0.975-1.015 and 0.900-1.114, respectively. In term of correlation between flow rate and pollutant concentrations, SS concentration was highly correlated to flow rate. However, there was an inverse correlation between EC (Electrical Conductivity) and flow rate because of the high dilution of flow rate. In case of correlation between pollutants, there was a high correlation between SS and T-P.

Pond ash is a mixture of mostly coarser fly ash and bottom ash. The recycling rate of pond ash is low because pond ash is mixed with seawater and deposited in ponds. The pond ash is also subjected to natural weathering over a period of time. In this study, we investigated whether pond ash can be used as a raw material of geopolymers, without any purification process or through a minimal purification process. In addition, we investigated whether synthetic basalt made by adding foaming agent to geopolymer or casting it into a mold can show the surface of the natural basalt as it is. The highest 7-day compressive strength in geopolymers from pond ash without purification process was 26 MPa. The highest 7-day compressive strength in geopolymers from pond ash with impurities removed through dry sieve analysis was found to improve to 80 MPa. On the other hand, synthetic basalt made with geopolymer was shown to be more advantageous aesthetically when produced by casting it in a silicone mold rather than by adding a foaming agent. Non-purified pond ash can be made into geopolymers having low strength. Pond ash purified by sieving can, without use of an aggregate, be made into geopolymer having high-strength. Also, it is possible to produce synthetic basalt with the same appearance as natural basalt and sufficient strength for commercialization. This process will contribute to the mass consumption and recycling of pond ash.
The Taechong Dam completed in 1980 is a composite dam at which a junction was formed partly by butting the core against the end face of the concrete gravity section and partly by the core overlapping the upstream face of the concrete. In order to evaluate the performance of the junction, the interfaces between the concrete dam and core of the embankment dam were well instrumented with total pressure cells and piezometers. A nonlinear incremental finite element analysis simulating its construction behaviour was carried out under plane strain conditions. Material parameters for the core are determined from triaxial tests on the specimens, sampled in the quarry site and compacted to the field dry density at the field moisture content. Material parameters for the filter, transition materials and the rockfill are estimated from literature. When compared with the earth pressures measured at the interfaces, the analytical results show good agreement in the core, however, there are some discrepancy in the shell. A nonlinear model for pore pressure response is used successfully to predict the pore pressures at the interface in the core.
With the increasing number of underground projects, the problem of rock-water coupling catastrophe has increasingly become the focus of safety. Grouting reinforcement is gradually applied in subway, tunnel, bridge reinforcement, coal mine floor and other construction projects. At present, cement-based grouting materials are easy to shrink and have low strength after solidification. In order to overcome the special problems of high water pressure and high in-situ stress in deep part and improve the reinforcement effect. In view of the mining conditions of deep surrounding rock, a new type of cement-based reinforcement material was developed. We analyses the principle and main indexes of floor strengthening, and tests and optimizes the indexes and proportions of the two materials through laboratory tests. Then, observes and compares the microstructures of the optimized floor strengthening materials with those of the traditional strengthening materials through scanning electron microscopy. The test results show that 42.5 Portland cement-based grouting reinforcement material has the advantages of slight expansion, anti-dry-shrinkage, high compressive strength and high density when the water-cement ratio is 0.4, the content of bentonite is 4%, and the content of Nano Silica is 2.5%. The reinforcement effect is better than other traditional grouting reinforcement materials.
The influence of subsequent curing on the performance of fly ash contained mortar under steam curing was studied. Mortar samples incorporated with different content (0%, 20%, 50% and 70%) of Class F fly ash under five typical subsequent curing conditions, including standard curing (ZS), water curing(ZW) under 25℃, oven-dry curing (ZD) under 60℃, frozen curing (ZF) under -10℃, and nature curing (ZN) exposed to outdoor environment were implemented. The unsteady chloride diffusion coefficient was measured by rapid chloride migration test (RCM) to analyze the influence of subsequent curing condition on the resistance to chloride penetration of fly ash contained mortar under steam curing. The compressive strength was measured to analyze the mechanical properties. Furthermore, the open porosity, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), x-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were examined to investigate the pore characteristics and phase composition of mortar. The results indicate that the resistance to chloride ingress and compressive strength of steam-cured mortar decline with the increase of fly ash incorporated, regardless of the subsequent curing condition. Compared to ZS, ZD and ZF lead to poor resistance to chloride penetration, while ZW and ZN show better performance. Interestingly, under different fly ash contents, the declining order of compressive strength remains ZS>ZW>ZN>ZD>ZF. When the fly ash content is blow 50%, the open porosity grows with increase of fly ash, regardless of the curing conditions are diverse. However, if the replacement amount of fly ash exceeds a certain high proportion (70%), the value of open porosity tends to decrease. Moreover, the main phase composition of the mortar hydration products is similar under different curing conditions, but the declining order of the C-S-H gels and ettringite content is ZS>ZD>ZF. The addition of fly ash could increase the amount of harmless pores at early age.
