In order to predict the effects of droplets distributions such as number density and droplets size on group combustion characteristics and flame structure for liquid fuel sprays, modifications of group combustions model were made by changing the droplets distributions from uniform to non-uniform. Various droplets distribution models were adopted in this analysis to examine the effect of number density distribution on combustion characteristics and the difference between uniform and non-uniform droplets size distributions for a spherical droplets cloud. As results of present study, hollow droplets could with outer concentrating distribution has shorter total combustion time compare with the case of solid droplets cloud with inner concentrating distribution. Uniform droplets size distribution model predicts the shorter total combustion time compare with non-uniform droplets size distribution model, and the uniform droplets size distribution model may be used to predict the total combustion time for the droplets cloud containing larger initial size of droplets.

The objective of present study is to understand the interaction of burning droplets in air stream for various droplet arrangement. The unsteady combustion of linearly arranged droplets with a convective flow has been studied numerically. The droplets with spacing of $5R_0\;to\;40R_0$ horizontally and with spacing of $4R_0\;to\;16R_0$ vertically are studied. The effects of Reynolds number, horizontal spacing, and vertical spacing on the interaction of burning droplets are examined. The results indicate that the droplet burning behavior is influenced by Reynolds number and relative location of droplets in the array. The interaction of droplets is increased for arrays with smaller droplet spacing. The vaporization of droplets in the array is varied with both horizontal and vertical spacing exponentially.

Generated agri-chemical droplets by orchard sprayers are evaporated regenerated and transported along wind streams. The droplets are deposited to targets after changing their sizes, affecting the retention of droplets. An orchard sprayer, designed for spraying grapevines was studied on the spatial distribution of droplet size. The experimental variables were spray direction (0, 22.5, 45, 67.5 and 90˚), distance(2.5, 3.0 and 3.5 m) and fan speed (2,075 and 3,031 rpm). Droplet sizes were converted and analyzed from spray stains, sampled using water sensitive papers. The number median diameter (NMD) increased with an increase of the distance due to disappeared fine droplets (<50 ㎛): however, the volume median diameter (VMD) decreased due to shrunken large droplets (>100 ㎛). Fast fan speed delivered large droplets to 3.5 m, but the spatial distributions of NMD and VMD were not uniform. Slower fan speed decreased the possibility of evaporation and drift; therefore, plenty of droplets were maintained up to 3.0 m. The upward blasting distance was limited within 3 m, but the limit to the ground level was extended to 3.5 m. Concentrated wind and droplets to the ground level should be redistributed to upper canopy direction, leading more uniform deposits. High speed wind and system pressure should be avoided because of generating fine droplets, which would be disappeared and drifted away.

In this study, the behavior of water or nanofluid droplets impacting upon a hot surface was investigated by visualization of impacting phenomena with time-delayed photographic technique. Changing the mass ratio of nanofluid and the temperature of the heated surface, the characteristics of the spreading behavior and the diameter of spreading liquid film was compared between water and nanofluid droplets. The impacting droplet spreaded as a liquid film after impact and nanofluid droplets spreaded more widely than water droplets. After reaching the maximum diameter, water droplets shrinked more than nanofluid droplets. Based on this, the heat transfer area from a hot surface to impacting nanofluid droplets would be wider than that of impacting water droplets. Considering individual impacting droplet only, spray cooling using nanofluid would be better than using water.

An experimental study was conducted on the film boiling of nanofluid droplets at a surface temperature range of 300 to 500℃. The nanofluid was made by mixing pure water with copper oxide powder of diameter of 80 nm. The initial volume of the nanofluid droplet ranged from about 21 to 44 ㎕, and the volume, base diameter, and time were measured during the evaporation process. It was found that nanofluid droplets evaporate faster as the surface temperature increases. Also experimental results showed the droplets evaporate quickly at the beginning of evaporation, but as the volume of the droplets decreases, the evaporation rate gradually slows down, and this trend becomes stronger as the surface temperature increases. In addition, the evaporation rate of nanofluid droplets was slightly faster than that of pure water droplets, this was believed to be because the contact area of nanofluid droplets increased.

The purpose of this experiment is to understand the distribution of coal particles inside CWM droplet which is believed to be a very important factor controlling the flame stability. CWM slurry is atomized by an air assisted twin fluid nozzle. An experimental rig is designed and fabricated. The mean size of coal particle distribution in CWM slurry, atomizing air pressure, coal particle loading in slurry and sampling position inside spray are main experimental variables. The atomized CWM droplets are sampled on the thin white layer of magnesium oxide by the emergency sampling shutter. The sampled coal particles on magnesium oxide layers are collected into test tubes and dispersed completely by Ultra-Sonicator. The size distribution of coal particles inside droplets are measured by Coulter Counter. The presence of coal particle inside the impressions of droplets on magnesium oxide layer are investigated by photo technique. There are quite many droplets which do not have any coal particles. Those are just water droplets, not CWM droplets. The population ratio of droplets without coal particles to toal number of droplets is strongly affected by the mean size of coal particle distribution in slurry and this ration becomes bigger number as the mean size of coal particles be larger. The size distribution of coal particles inside CWM droplets is not even and depends on the size of droplet. Experimental results show that the larger CWM droplets has droplets has bigger mean value of particle size distribution. This trend becomes more evident as the atomizing air pressure is raised and the mean size of coal particles in CWM slurry is bigger. That is, the distribution of coal particles inside CWM dropolets is very much affected by the atomizing air pressure and the mean size of pulverized coal particles in CWM slurry.

Particle-reinforced metal matrix composites via the Osprey spray casting process were fabricated by injecting second phase particles of $Al_2O_3$(＜$40{\mu}m$) and W($6{\mu}m$) into the spray of Cu droplets, and the thermal behaviors of the composite droplets during flight were considered theoretically on the basis of mixing modes between the Cu droplets and the reinforced particulates injected. It was found that the W-injected spray is comprised of particle-embedded droplets, and the $Al_2O_3-injected$ spray comprises particle-attached droplets. From the predicted results of the thermal behaviors of the composite droplets and preforms produced, it is concluded that the thermal behaviors of the composite droplets during flight, and during the subsequent deposition are strongly influenced by its mixing modes between the reinforced particulates and Cu droplets during flight.

Recent publications reported the self-propelled jumping of coalescing dew droplets on superhydrophobic surfaces [1-2]. We further investigated the initial growth, coalescence, and removal by self-propelled ejection of nano and microscopic water droplets on the superhydrophobic surface of lotus leaves under condensing conditions. By using a high-speed digital camera mounted on an optical microscope, we have found: (1) sub-micrometer droplets form and grow on nanoscale waxy hairs; (2) growing droplets coalesce rapidly upon contact, but never jump off the surface unless the diameter of merged droplets exceeds ${\sim}15{\mu}m$; (3) the diameter and direction of jumping droplets are very narrowly distributed, centered at $20-30{\mu}m$ and ${\sim}20$ degrees from the surface normal, respectively. We present a rationale for these observations on the basis of: (a) the hierarchically rough surface structure on nano- and micro-scales; (b) its chemical composition; and (c) the balance among competing forces of cohesion (surface tension), adhesion and gravity.

This study was experimentally performed to investigate flow characteristics of spray droplets in the wind tunnel. Behavior of the spray droplets in the pipe was observed and the deposition rate of droplets on the surface of pipe as liquid film was measured. The experiments were carried out for a variety of parameter, such as velocity of feed air, spray angle of nozzle, and diameter of droplet. From the visual observation of the spray droplets in the pipe and the measurement of deposition rate on the pipe, the general understanding of droplets behavior for desuperheater was provided.

This study investigates spray characteristics before and after wall impingingment of gasoline spray in suction air flow. For this study, a rectangular model intake port was made of acrylic glass, and suction air was generated by using the forced air blower contrariwise. The injector for this study was a pintle-type port gasoline injector in which an air-assist adaptor is installed to supply assisted air. A PDPA system was employed to simultaneously measure the size and velocity of droplets near the wall. Measured droplets are divided into "pre-impinging droplets"with positive normal velocity and "post-impinging droplets"were negative normal velocity for the suction flow. The velocities, size distributions and Sauter mean diameter(SMD) of pre-and post-impinging droplets for varions injection angles and air-assists are comparatively analyzed.
