  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of calcium hydroxide and glass ionomer cement fillings on the levels of $LTB_4$ and $LTC_4$ in experimentally inflamed rat dental pulp. The dental pulp in the mandibular incisor of wistar rat was irritated by cutting a 5mm deep hole in the dentin with a twist drill bur of 0.5mm diameter, without cooling. The cavities were filled with calcium hydroxide(light-cured) and glass ionomer cement(light cured). The untreated pulp served as control tissue specimen. After cavity preparations, the rat with or without various treatment were sacrificed in various time by decapitation. The dental pulp tissue were carefully removed and the concentrations of $LTB_4$ and $LTC_4$ were determined by radioimmunoassay. And pulps were examined histologically to observe inflammatory feature. The result were obtained as follows : 1. The inflammatory features of pulps were observed microscopically in all experimental groups. And degree of inflammation was decreased with time. 2. The concentrations of $LTB_4$ and $LTC_4$ for all experimental groups were significantly higher than those for control group 6 hours after cavity preparation(p<0.05). 3. The group filled with calcium hydroxide was the lowest, and the group filled with glass ionomer cement, the group of irritation in that order showed increased concentrations of $LTB_4$ and $LTC_4$ 6 hours after cavity preparation. In the concentrations of $LTB_4$, significant differences among 3 groups were noted(p<0.05). 4. The group filled with calcium hydroxide was the lowest, and the group filled with glass ionomer cement, the group of irritation in that order showed increased concentrations of $LTB_4$ and $LTC_4$ 24 hours after cavity preparation. And there were statistically significant difference in concentrations of $LTB_4$ between the group of irritation and the group filled with calcium hydroxide(p<0.05). 5. The group filled with calcium hydroxide was the lowest, and the group filled with glass ionomer cement, the group of irritation in that order showed increased concentrations of $LTB_4$ and $LTC_4$ 48 hours after cavity preparation. But no statistically difference was found (p>0.05). 6. The concentrations of $LTB_4$ and $LTC_4$ in all experimental groups were highest level at 6 hour after experiment and decreased as time progresses(correlation coefficient>0.8).

  • Purpose: We describe a new and simple technique for arthroscopic fixation of tibial intercondylar eminence avulsion fracture using bioabsorbable pins in skeletally immature patients. Operative Technique: Diagnostic knee arthroscopy is performed using anterolateral and anteromedial portals. Fracture debris and blood clot are debrided to expose the injured site well. The fragment is reduced with the probe and fixed temporarily with a 1.1-mm diameter K-wire that is inserted percutaneously from the anterosuperior aspect of the knee joint. The drill guide is introduced into the joint and the fragment is secured by bioabsorbable, poly-p-dioxanone 1.3-mm pins inserted from different angles. The pins are 40 mm in length. The knee is placed in a long leg cast in extension for 4 weeks to assure that full extension is obtained. Conclusion: Arthroscopic fixation of an tibial intercondylar eminence avulsion fracture using bioabsorbable pins is not a technically demanding, suitable method that ensures fracture healing and restores the stability of the joint.

  • To investigate the velocity structure in the central and southern parts of the Korean peninsula, a 299-km NW-SE seismic refraction profile KCRT-2008was obtained across major tectonic boundaries. Seismic waves were generated by detonating 250 ~ 1500 kg explosives at depths of 50 ~ 100 m in eight drill holes located at intervals of 21 ~ 113 km. The seismic signals were detected by 4.5 Hz geophones at a nominal interval of 500 m. The first-arrival times were inverted to derive a velocity tomogram. The raypaths indicate several mid-crust interfaces including those at approximate depths of 2 ~ 3, 11 ~ 13, and 20 km. The Moho discontinuity with refraction velocity of 7.7 to 8.1 km/s has a maximum depth of 34.5 km under the central portion of the peninsula. The Moho becomes shallower as the Yellow Sea and the East Sea are approached on the west and east coasts of the peninsula, respectively. The depth of the 7.6 km/s velocity contour varies from 31.3 km to 34.4 km. The velocity tomogram shows the existence of a 129 km wide low-velocity zone centered at 7.2 km depth under the Okchon fold belt and Gyeonggi massif and low-velocity(< 5.4 km/s) rocks in the Gyeongsang sedimentary basin with a maximum thickness of 2.6 km

  • Domestic hydraulic drifters till now have been developed by benchmarking products from overseas leading companies. However, they do not have excellent impact performance as they are not suitable for characteristics (large flow rate and low pressure) of Korean hydraulic drill power pack, and therefore, research on the optimum design has not made much headway. This study performs multi-objective function optimization for hydraulic drifters whose capacity has been redesigned to deal with the large flow rate, and also with the help of this function, it aims to improve impact power and reduce supply and surge pressure. A summary of the research study is as follows: First, we set goals for improving impact power, supply pressure, and surge pressure, and then perform multi-objective function optimization on them. After that, we secure the reliability of the optimized analytical model by comparing the test results of the prototype built by the optimized design with the analysis results of the analytical model. This study used SimulationX, that is the hydraulic system analysis software, and EasyDesign, which is a multi-objective function optimization program. Through this research, we have achieved the results that satisfy the goal of developing high power drifters suitable for Korean type hydraulic drills.

  • Cases of TBM tunnelling have been consistently increasing worldwide. In many recent subsea and urban tunnelling projects, TBM excavation has been preferably considered due to its advantages over drill and blast tunnelling. Difficult ground conditions are highly probable to appear in subsea and urban tunnels because of the shallow working depth and alluvial characteristics. Under the difficult ground conditions, ground reinforcement measures should be considered including grouting, while it is of great importance to select the optimal grout material and injection method to cope with the ground condition. The benefits from TBM excavation, such as fast excavation, increased safety, and reduced environmental impact, can be achieved by applying appropriate ground reinforcement with the minimum overrun of cost and time. In this report, various grouting methods were reviewed so that they can be applied in difficult ground conditions. In addition, domestic and international cases of successful ground reinforcement for difficult grounds were introduced for future reference.

  • Purpose: This paper aims to clarify the problems and to examine the improvement methods by investigating the management condition of local-designated cultural property of which management is relatively poor in comparison with state-designated cultural heritage. Method: In order to grasp the management situation of the local-designated cultural heritage, a research on cultural heritage management situation and problems will be carried out with 35 cultual heritages in Goryeong-gun. Also, the improvement methods about the property type vulnerability on the basis of interview with cultual property managers, fire-fighting officers and civil servants, etc. Results: Local cultural heritages were investigated to be very vulnerable to the fire of wooden buildings, the theft of movable cultural heritages, and the effects of wind and water damage. It is because cultural heritages are scattered over wide areas fundamentally. As the result, it has difficulty in the patrols of police officers and fire fighters, and in the situation that it lacks disaster monitoring and CCTV for countermeasures to replace them, electronic security including fire hydrant, sensors, etc and fire extinguishing facilities and so on. It is difficult for local governments managing local-designated cultural heritages to enhance their management systems directly due to their lack of budget and manpower. Conclusion: In order to strengthen disaster and safety management system for the cultural heritages designated by local governments, they have to clarify disaster countermeasure task of fire fighting, police, and cultural heritage managers prepare their manuals, and systematize them through disaster drill mainly in local autonomous governments. Also, so as to establish a surveillance system every day, they have to enhance the community for local cultural heritage manage consisting of local volunteer fire departments, local voluntary disaster prevention organizations, volunteers, etc.

  • The media in the undersaturated zone is defined as the uppermost layer of the water table at which the groundwater is unsaturated or saturated discontinuously. The properties of the unsaturated zone can affect the reduction of contaminants that flow from the lower part of soil to the water table. In recent, there have been problems in evaluating groundwater contaminations vulnerability because weighted value for permeability is given, regardless of anisotropy and heterogeneity in the unsaturated media. Geological media have various ranges of permeability. When applying the weighted value, representative of permeability for grain sizes standardized, to construction of contamination vulnerability, it will produce more exaggerated result than the case that considers unsaturated geological properties. In this study, we performed laboratory column tests considering two sets of the unsaturated layers in order to investigate the permeability in anisotropic unsaturated zone with anisotropy. On the basis of the tests, average permeability coefficients were calculated considering the properties of unsaturated media obtained from drill cores in the field. The final contamination vulnerability map constructed shows that the contamination vulnerability map applying the properties of geological media of the unsaturated zone coincides much better with the results measured in the field, compared to the case of contamination vulnerability considering the weighted value in the unsaturated zone.

  • The year 2018 is the $50^{th}$ anniversary of scientific ocean drilling. Nevertheless, we know more about the surface of the moon than the Earth's ocean floor. In other words, there are still no much informations about the Earth interior. Much of what we do know has come from the scientific ocean drilling, providing the systematic collection of core samples from the deep seabed. This revolutionary process began 50 years ago, when the drilling vessel Glomar Challenger sailed into the Gulf of Mexico on August 11, 1968 on the first expedition of the federally funded Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP). DSDP followed successively by Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (old IODP), and International Ocean Discovery Program (new IODP). Concerning on the results of scientific ocean drilling, there are two technological innovations and various scientific research results. The one is a dynamic positioning system, enables the drilling vessel to stay fixed in place while drilling and recovering cores in the deep water. Another is the finding of re-entry cone to replace drill bit during the drilling. In addition to technological innovation, there are important scientific results such as confirmation of plate tectonics, reconstruction of earth's history, and finding of life within sediments. New IODP has begun in October, 2013 and will continue till 2023. IODP member countries are preparing for the IODP science plan beyond 2023 and future 50 years of scientific ocean drilling. We as IODP member also need to participate in keeping with the international trend.

  • Tremex fuscicornis (Siricidae), known as the xylophagous horntail, and Leucospis japonica (Leucospidae), known as the parasitoid wasp, are wood-boring wasps belonging to the order Hymenoptera. These insects are interesting sources of biological inspiration for the development of drilling mechanisms. To study the biomimicry aspects, the morphological characters of the ovipositor of T. fuscicornis and L. japonica were analyzed using a stereoscopic microscope, a field emission scanning electron microscope, and an optical microscope. There were many differences in the ovipositors between the two species, such as shape, length, surface structure, and arrangement of the teeth. Evenly arranged teeth were developed at the tip of both the dorsal valve and the ventral valve of the ovipositor of T. fuscicornis and looked like a rotating drill bit. In contrast, in L. japonica, the teeth, which looked like a saw, were found only on the ventral valve. Moreover, the tip of the ovipositor of T. fuscicornis was symmetrically divided into four parts, while that of L. japonica was divided into three parts having a 2:1:1 ratio. However, in the case of T. fuscicornis, after the 14th tooth, four parts melded into three parts maintaining a 2:1:1 ratio, and a dovetail joint was found on the horizontal cross-section of the ovipositor that allowed vertical movement for making a hole. These morphological differences of the ovipositor may be due to the insects' lifestyles and phylogenetic distance. Finally, zinc was commonly found at the tip of the ovipositors of both species, a probable result of ecological adaptation created by drilling wood.

  • The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effect on medical application and convergence for the efficient disaster responses in the massive radiological events by comparison of two types of survey-meters(hand held survey-meter and transportable portal monitor). In the simulated radiation disaster drill, twelve participants randomly wore a personal protective equipments (PPE) with twelve check source. We measured participants to detect five real radioactive sources of the twelve check sources, using two types of survey meters. The primary outcome was the measuring time. The secondary outcome was the sensitivity and specificity of the detection of the real radioactive source. The average time by the hand held survey meter was 231.9 ± 116.6 seconds, and the time by transportable portal monitor was statistically shorter 8.690 ± 1.667 seconds. There was no difference in the sensitivity and specificity between two survey meters. The transportable portal monitor survey meter was considered to have medical application and play an important role in radiological disasters.
