The application of double-skin composite wall should meet different layout plans. However, most available research focused on the rectangular section with uniform axial compression. In this research, the structural behavior of double-skin composite wall with L section was studied. Due to the unsymmetric geometric characteristics, the considered loading condition combined the axial compression and biaxial bending. Five specimens were designed and tested under eccentric compression. The variables in the test included the width of the web wall, the truss spacing, the thickness of the steel faceplate, and the thickness of the web wall. The test results were discussed in terms of the load-displacement responses, buckling behavior, stiffness, ductility, strength utilization, strain distribution. Two modern codes were employed to predict the interaction between the axial compression and the biaxial bending. The method to calculate the available bending moment along the two directions was proposed. It was found that CECS 159:2004 offers more suitable results than AISC 360.
This paper describes a series of compression tests carried out on concrete filled double skin tubes (CFDST). Both outer and inner tubes are cold-formed circular hollow sections (CHS). Six section sizes were chosen for the outer tubes with diameter-to-thickness ratio ranging from 19 to 57. Two section sizes are chosen for the inner tubes with diameter-to-thickness ratio of 17 and 33. The failure modes, strength, ductility and energy absorption of CFDST are compared with those of empty single skin tubes. Increased ductility and energy absorption have been observed for CFDST especially for those having slender outer tubes with larger diameter-to-thickness ratio. Predictions from several theoretical models are compared with the ultimate strength of CFDST stub columns obtained in the tests. The proposed formula was found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.
Due to many advantages such as light weight, fast installation, high durability, composite bridge deck is considered to be one of the promissing alternatives to concrete bridge deck. The paper presents procedures of finite element analysis and laminate design for composite bridge deck of triangular shape for DB24 load. After design of the section glass reinforced composite deck tube of double triangular section with 200mm profile was fabricated with pultrusion and the procedure are presented.

Intentionally weakened girders near the beam-to-colum connection lead ductile failures at the weakened points prior to potential brittle failure at the connection points subjected to strong earthquake. Recent research investigated cyclic behavior of composite beams with a rectangular web opening and find out ductile failure of such beams due to plastic hinge formation of T-section at the four corners of the rectangular opening. But eventual failures of T-sections are resulted from local buckling of T-section having a narrow stem and a narrow bound of plastic hinge formation. This continuing research proposes double-circular opening instead of rectangular one in ofter to improve energy dissipation capacity as well as composite beam strength, Experimental test of two specimens was carried out and its results are compared with those of nonlinear finite element analyses
Double skin composite walls are alternatives to concrete walls to resist gravity load in structures. The composite action between steel faceplates and concrete core largely depends on the internal mechanical connectors. This paper investigates the structural behavior of novel composite wall system with T section and under combined compressive force and bending moment. The truss connectors are used to bond the steel faceplates to concrete core. Four short specimens were designed and tested under eccentric compression. The influences of the thickness of steel faceplates, the truss spacing, and the thickness of web wall were discussed based on the test results. The N-M interaction curves by AISC 360, Eurocode 4, and CECS 159 were compared with the test data. It was found that AISC 360 provided the most reasonable predictions.
Semi-rigid connections with blind bolts could solve the difficulty that traditional high strength bolts were unavailable to splice a steel/composite beam to a closed section column. However, insufficient investigations have focused on the performance of semi-rigid connection to square concrete filled double-skin steel tubular (CFDST) columns. In this paper, a component model was developed to evaluate the mechanical behavior of semi-rigid composite connections to CFDST columns considering the stiffness and strength of column face in compression and column web in shear which were determined by the load transfer mechanism and superstition method. Then, experimental investigations on blind bolted composite joints to square CFDST columns were conducted to validate the accuracy of the component model. Dominant failure modes of the connections were analyzed and this type of joint behaved semi-rigid manner. More importantly, strain responses of CFDST column web and tubes verified that stiffness and strength of column face in compression and column web in shear significantly affected the connection mechanical behavior owing to the hollow part of the cross-section for CFDST column. The experimental and analytical results showed that the CFDST column to steel-concrete composite beam semi-rigid joints could be employed for the assembled structures in high intensity seismic regions.
This paper summarises results of the research performed at the Department of Steel Structures and Structural Mechanics from the "Politehnica" University of Timisoara, Romania, in order to evaluate the performance of beam-to-column extended end plate connections for steel and composite joints. It comprises laboratory tests on steel and composite joints, and numerical modelling of joints, based on tests. Tested joints are double-sided, with structural elements realised of welded steel sections. The columns are of cruciform cross-section, while the beams are of I section. Both monotonic and cyclic loading, symmetrically and antisymmetrically, has been applied. On the basis of tested joints, a refined computer model has been calibrated using a special connection element of the computer code DRAIN 2DX. In this way, a static/dynamic structural analysis of framed structures with real characteristics of the beam to column joints is possible.
