  • Certainly, we are living in a true mobile society. At the end of 2014, approximately 40million 560thousand people are subscribed to smartphone services in Korea, using more than 2000MB of mobile data per a person. The use of smartphone is expected to increase. Moreover, smartphone moves toward becoming a requisite for modern people. Under the circumstances, high-speed communication services such as LTE provide high quality services anywhere and anytime and, furthermore, the development of high performances of the application makes the life patterns of modern people link directly to smartphone. Almost every day, new creative services are being introduced and the demands of on-line streaming services such as high-performance game and YouTube are increasing day after day. However, although smartphones are getting smarter and high quality services are rapidly growing, consumers still complain about the insufficient usage time caused by the capacity of batteries. In order to solve this problem, this thesis suggests EDLC(Electric Double-Layer Capacitor) uses as a supplemental power supply to keep the continuity of work while switching batteries. Through this approach, the running time of smartphone becomes longer as the number of batteries without power off and the purpose of this study is to maximize the convenience of using smartphone by eliminating the initialization of memories and the loss of time of rebooting while batteries are switched.

The proposed SSFG composes series inverter, DC capacitor as energy storage, rectifier and voltage clamp circuit. This SSFG is designed to generate typical power disturbances, such as voltage sag/swell, over/under voltage and voltage flicker. Also it is designed to generate unexpected voltage phase jumping waveform by controlling the series inverter. In this paper, three kinds of control methods for the proposed 2MVA SSFG we investigated by PSIM simulation. Also typical voltage sag, swell, flicker waveforms are implemented by adopting effective control method.

  • Two sorts of electrode composed of Sulpur/CNT/PVDF and Silver/CNT/PVDF were prepared by in situ chemical method and their electrochemical performance were evaluated by using cyclic voltammetry, impedance measurement and constant-current charge/discharge cycling technique. Also, composite electrodes were characterized by FE-SEM and BET. Raw materials such as CNT/Silver and CNT/Sulfur were mixed in ethanol, dried. These mixed materials were heated at 900 and $320^{\circ}C$ for 2hr, respectively in order to enhance contact among CNT electrodes. Electric double layer capacitor cells were fabricated using these mixed powder with polymer of PVDF. For the charging and discharging characteristics measured at scan rate of 1 mA/s, Supercapacitor of Sulphur-CNT-PVDF electrode showed a better performance than that of Ag-CNT-PVDF, which seems to be related with lower contact resistance of Sulphur-CNT-PVDF electrode.

  • An indirect matrix converter (IMC) is a modern power generation system that enables a direct ac/ac conversion without the need for any bulky and limited lifetime electrolytic capacitor. This system also allows four-quadrant operation, generation of sinusoidal output voltage waveforms with variable frequency and amplitude, and control of input power factor. This study proposes a pulse-width modulation-based sliding-mode controller to achieve unity input-power factor operation of the IMC independently of the active power exchanged with the grid, as well as a fast dynamic response. The designed equivalent control law determines, at each sampling period, the appropriate q-axis component of the modulated input current to be injected into the grid through the LC input filter. An integral term of the error is included in the expression of the sliding surface to increase the accuracy of the control method. A double space vector modulation method is used to synthesize the direction of the space vector of the input currents as required by the sliding-mode controller and the space vectors of the target output voltages. Simulation and experimental results are provided to show the effectiveness and evaluate the performance of the proposed control method.

  • This paper presents the determination method of the hybrid energy storage capacity for compensating the output of wind power when disconnecting from the grid. In the wind power output compensation, a lot of charging and discharging time with lithium-ion battery will be deteriorated the life time. And also, this fluctuation will cause some problems of the power quality and power system stability. To solve these kind of problems, many researchers in the world have been studied with BESS(Battery Energy Storage System) in the wind farm. But, BESS has the limitation of its output during very short term period, this means that it is difficult to compensate the very short term output of wind farm. Using the EDLC (Electric Double Layer Capacitor), it is possible to solve the problem. Installing the battery system in the wind farm, it will be possible to decrease the total capacity of BESS consisting of HESS (Hybrid Energy Storage System). This paper shows simulation results when not only BESS is connected to wind farm but also to HESS. To verify the proposed system, results of computer simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC program with actual output data of wind farms of Jeju Island will be presented.

  • MnO2 can be potentially utilized as an electrode material for redox capacitors. The deposition of MnO2 with poor electrical conductivity onto porous carbons supplies them with additional conductive paths; as a result, the capacitance of the electrical double layer formed on the porous carbon surface can be utilized together with the redox capacitance of MnO2. However, the obtained composites are not generally suitable for industrial production because they require the use of expensive porous carbons and/or inefficient fabrication methods. Thus, to develop an effective preparation procedure of the composite, a suitable structure of porous carbons must be determined. In this study, MnO2/C composites have been prepared from activated carbon gels with various pore sizes, and their electrical properties are investigated via cyclic voltammetry. In particular, mesoporous carbons with a pore size of around 20 nm form a composite with a relatively low capacitance (98 F/g-composite) and poor rate performance despite the moderate redox capacitance obtained for MnO2 (313 F/g-MnO2). On the other hand, using macro-porous carbons with a pore size of around 60 nm increases the MnO2 redox capacitance (399 F/g-MnO2) as well as the capacitance and rate performance of the entire material (203 F/g-composite). The obtained results can be used in the industrial manufacturing of MnO2/C composites for supercapacitor electrodes from the commercially available porous carbons.

  • In this work, a capacitive wireless power transfer (C-WPT) system is presented for wireless sensor system (WSS) applications in marine propulsion shafts. For a single Q factor on both sides of the coupling capacitor and reactive power removal from the circuit, a double-sided LCLC converter and transformers topology are designed to drive the rotary C-WPT system for WSS on the shaft. Parallel-connected parallel plate rotating capacitors with a capacitance of 170 pF are designed and implemented for the C-WPT system on a snow rotating shaft. In the experimental results, the C-WPT system achieved a transmission efficiency of 66.67% with 7.8 W output power at 3 mm distance and 1 MHz operating frequency. Therefore, it was proved that the fabricated C-WPT system can supply power to the WSS of the rotating shaft.

  • This study investigates the effects of a carbon fiber layer formed on the surface of an etched aluminum current collector on the electrochemical properties of the activated carbon electrodes for an electric double layer capacitor. A particle size analyzer, field-emission SEM, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherm analyzer are employed to analyze the structure of the carbon fiber layer. The electric and electrochemical properties of the activated carbon electrodes using a carbon fiber layer are evaluated using an electrode resistance meter and a charge-discharge tester, respectively. To uniformly coat the surface with carbon fiber, we applied a planetary mill process, adjusted the particle size, and prepared the carbon paste by dispersing in a binder. Subsequently, the carbon paste was coated on the surface of the etched aluminum current collector to form the carbon under layer, after which an activated carbon slurry was coated to form the electrodes. Based on the results, the interface resistance of the EDLC cell made of the current collector with the carbon fiber layer was reduced compared to the cell using the pristine current collector. The interfacial resistance decreased from 0.0143 Ω·cm2 to a maximum of 0.0077 Ω·cm2. And degradation reactions of the activated carbon electrodes are suppressed in the 3.3 V floating test. We infer that it is because the improved electric network of the carbon fiber layer coated on the current collector surface enhanced the electron collection and interfacial diffusion while protecting the surface of the cathode etched aluminum; thereby suppressing the formation of Al-F compounds.

  • In this study, electrochemical properties of pitch-based activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were investigated by different heat-treatment temperature of the pitch-based ACFs in order to improve the specific capacitance of electric double-layer capacitor (EDLC). The ACFs were prepared by different heat-treatment temperatures of 1050 and $1450^{\circ}C$, after activation with 4 M KOH at $800^{\circ}C$ using stabilized pitch fiber. The specific surface area of prepared ACFs increased from $828m^2/g$ to $987m^2/g$, also the micropore and mesopore volumes of prepared ACFs were increased. These results because pore was produced by desorbing oxygen and hydrogen elements within the ACFs, and pore size was increased by contraction ACFs by heat-treatment process. Because of the porous properties, the specific capacitance was increased from 73 F/g to 119 F/g using cyclic voltammetry with 1 M $H_2SO_4$ at scan rates of 5 mV/s.

  • The coconut shell based activated carbon was applied for EDLC (electric double layer capacitor) electrode with the post treatments. The electrochemical properties were evaluated with a coin cell using the activated carbon as electrode. The initial gravimetric and volumetric capacitance of the coconut shell based activated carbon electrode s were 66 F/g and 39 F/cc, and these values decreased to 54 F/g and 32 F/cc after 100 cycles, respectively showing 82% of charge-discharge efficiency. The properties of CV graph with the commercial activated carbon electrodes showed the serious polarization as the result of additional reaction between electrolyte and impurities of the electrode materials. In order to remove impurities efficiently, the commercial activated carbon was treated by alkali and acid solutions consecutively, and then heat treated to control the pore size distribution and the content of surface functional groups. The surface functional groups decreased with the increased heat temperature and the specific capacitance increased with the decreased surface functional groups. The initial capacitance of coconut shell based activated carbon elec trode which was treated with NaOH and HNO3, and then heat treated at $800^{\circ}C$ was 44 F/cc, and the value turned out to be 42 F/cc after 100 cycles, showing over 95% of charge-discharge efficiency.
