직업상 피폭에 따른 방사선 위험성 평가를 위한 다차원적 모델 (Multidimensional Model for Assessing Risks from Occupational Radiation Exposure of Workers)

  • 직업상 피폭에 대한 현행 방사선 위험성 평가는 종사자의 피폭선량 평가 및 건강진단에 중점을 두고 있다. 이러한 개인 중심의 위험성 평가는 선량계 미착용 및 개개인의 기호로 인한 건강영향 문제 등 정확한 데이터 확보의 어려움으로 인한 오류의 가능성이 있다. 또한 평가의 기준이 되는 선량한도는 법적 최대 상한값으로 방사선 방호에 최적화된 값을 의미하지는 않는다. 이에 선원적, 환경적 및 인적 측면을 복합적으로 고려할 수 있고 방사선방호의 최적화를 이행할 수 있는 국가적 차원의 새로운 위험성 평가 모델이 요구되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 고용노동부의 위험성 평가에 기반하여 개인이 아닌 작업장 중심의 위험성 평가 모델을 연구하였다. 이를 위해 여러 분야의 위험성 추정 방법을 분석하여 방사선 분야에 적용하기 적합한 모델을 도출하고, 모델에 적용하기 위한 데이터 획득 방법 및 절차에 대해 기술하였다. 본 연구에서 도출한 작업장 중심의 다차원적 위험성 평가 모델은 위험성을 점수화하고 Rader Plot을 이용하여 표현함으로서 보다 정확한 방사선 위험성 평가를 가능하게 하며, 결론적으로 효율적인 종사자 관리, 선제적 종사자 보호 및 방사선 방호의 최적화 이행에 기여할 것으로 판단된다.

Assessment of radiation exposure from cesium-137 contaminated roads for epidemiological studies in Seoul, Korea

  • Objectives We aimed to assess the radiation exposure for epidemiologic investigation in residents exposed to radiation from roads that were accidentally found to be contaminated with radioactive cesium-137 ($^{137}Cs$) in Seoul. Methods Using information regarding the frequency and duration of passing via the $^{137}Cs$ contaminated roads or residing/working near the roads from the questionnaires that were obtained from 8875 residents and the measured radiation doses reported by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, we calculated the total cumulative dose of radiation exposure for each person. Results Sixty-three percent of the residents who responded to the questionnaire were considered as ever-exposed and 1% of them had a total cumulative dose of more than 10 mSv. The mean (minimum, maximum) duration of radiation exposure was 4.75 years (0.08, 11.98) and the geometric mean (minimum, maximum) of the total cumulative dose was 0.049 mSv (<0.001, 35.35) in the exposed. Conclusions An individual exposure assessment was performed for an epidemiological study to estimate the health risk among residents living in the vicinity of $^{137}Cs$ contaminated roads. The average exposure dose in the exposed people was less than 5% of the current guideline.

폴리에틸렌 미세플라스틱의 임신 마우스 위내투여에 따른 모체 및 신생자 독성평가 (Toxicities Demonstrated in Dams and Neonates following Intragastric Intubation of Polyethylene Microplastics to Pregnant Mice)

  • Background: Plastic particles less than 5 mm in diameter (microplastics) are well-known for causing various toxicities such as lung inflammation, oxidative stress, genotoxicity, and reproductive toxicity. As microplastics become smaller, they can move across cell membranes, the placenta, and the blood-brain barrier. Objectives: We evaluated the toxicities of polyethylene microplastics (PE-PMs) in dams and neonates through intragastric intubation of pregnant ICR mice. Methods: Low concentrations (0.01 mg/mouse/day) and high concentrations (0.1 mg/mouse/day) of polyethylene microplastics were administered from the ninth day of pregnancy to postnatal day seven. The control group was administered with distilled water. On the day of sacrifice, the weight of dams and neonates and the organ weight of neonates was measured. Further, acetylcholinesterase levels and glutathione peroxidase levels were evaluated by using a blood sample obtained on the sacrifice day. Results: No significant difference in the number of neonates was found, but the body weight gain of dams was seen to be lower in the low-dose group. On the other hand, we observed a consecutively declining trend in the weight gain and organ weight of neonates among the high-, control, and low-dose groups. Meanwhile, the serum acetylcholinesterase and glutathione peroxidase level were higher in the low-dose group compared to the control group. Further, the dose-dependent accumulation of microplastics in the organs of neonates revealed the transport of plastic particles from dams to their offspring. Conclusions: Although the exact mechanism of toxicity caused by microplastics could not be confirmed, it was validated that exposure to microplastics during pregnancy and lactation causes its migration between generations and accumulation throughout the body. Hence, it is necessary to evaluate the systemic toxicity of microplastics and assessment of co-morbidities such as second-generation toxicity, neurotoxicity, and depression following long-term exposure.

Radioiodine internal dose coefficients specific for Koreans

  • This study developed internal dose coefficients for radioiodine, tailored to the Korean population, by incorporating the Korean biokinetic model along with the Korean S values. The observed differences in dose coefficients for Koreans compared to the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) reference values noticeably varied depending on physical half-lives of iodine isotopes. For longer-lived isotopes such as I-125 and I-129, significant differences in thyroid dose coefficients were observed, with ratios (Korean/ICRP) from 0.30 to 0.55, indicating that actual doses for Koreans can be considerably lower than those evaluated based on the ICRP data. However, for short-lived iodine isotopes, such as I-131, the thyroid dose coefficients were comparable to the ICRP reference values (ratio = 0.95-0.98). These comparable dose coefficients resulted from the lower thyroidal iodine uptake in the Korean model being almost entirely offset by the higher thyroid self-absorption S values in the Korean phantoms. Additionally, this study delves into the substantial differences in absorbed dose coefficients for non-thyroidal regions and effective dose coefficients, which arose not only from physiological/anatomical variability but also technical differences in phantom design. The use of Korean-specific dose coefficients is advisable particularly in scenarios predicting elevated doses, yielding a more precise and clinically relevant dose assessment.

유리선량계를 이용한 저선량 방사선의 마우스 피폭선량 연구 (A Study on Mice Exposure Dose for Low-dose Gamma-irradiation Using Glass Dosimeter)

  • 저선량 조사는 낮은 선량을 지속적으로 장기간 조사시키기 때문에 조사되는 마우스들에 대한 선량분포를 정확히 알고 있어야만 한다. 본 연구는 저선량 방사선에 대한 생물학적 영향평가를 위하여 동남권원자력의학원 연구센터에 설치된 $^{137}Cs$ 조사장치에 대하여 마우스조사 실험 시 마우스에 원하고자 하는 선량을 전달하기 위한 방법에 대하여 연구를 수행하였다. 마우스에 원하고자 하는 정확한 선량을 전달하기 위하여 선원에 대하여 동일한 위치에 마우스 케이지 45개를 설치할 수 있는 아파트를 자체 개발하였으며, 개발된 마우스 아파트 시스템에 대한 선량평가를 하기 위하여 유리선량계(glass dosimeter)를 실험용 마우스 머리와 배에 삽입한 후 기존 조사 시스템과 자체 개발한 마우스 아파트 시스템에 대해 비교 선량평가를 수행하였다. 기존시스템의 조사방식에서 최대 42%의 선량차이를 보였으며 개발한 마우스 아파트 시스템은 6% 이내의 선량차이를 보였다. 본 연구를 통해 개발된 마우스 아파트를 활용한 저선량 방사선에 대한 생물학적 영향평가 연구는 전달하고자 하는 선량을 보다 정확하게 제공할 수 있으며, 생물학적 분석결과에 신뢰성을 확보할 수 있다.
