Marine algal flora and community structures were examined seasonally at three sites around the Shingori Nuclear Power Plant, Korea from February to November 2016. A total of 76 species were identified, including 9 green, 14 brown and 53 red algae. The greatest number of species occurred at Daesongri (51 species) followed by Sinamri (43 species) and at the discharge area (38 species) during the study period. Of the 76 seaweeds, 59 annuals and 17 warm tolerant species were recorded. Annual average biomass in dry weight varied from $168.02g/m^2$ at the discharge area to $222.53g/m^2$ at Sinamri. The coarsely branched form was the dominant functional form of seaweeds at the three sites. Seaweed community structures at the discharge site were distinguishable by decreasing species richness, biomass, species diversity index, richness index, and evenness index. The ratio of warm tolerance species and the dominance index values were remarkably higher at the discharge than those at the other sites.
This study investigated population fluctuations in two mite species in apple orchards over 20-year period. The occurrence of two major mite pests infesting apple trees, two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae and European red mite Panonychus ulmi (Acari: Tetranychidae), was investigated from 1992 to 2011 in major apple-producing districts, including four to eight cities, in the southern part of the Republic of Korea. The 20-year trend revealed that more orchards were infested by T. urticae from 1992 to 1999, but thereafter P. ulmi became dominant. The observed mean density of P. ulmi was consistent, whereas that of T. urticae fluctuated during this period. The analysis of occurrence in four time periods reveals that the density of T. urticae decreased after 2002. The monthly sampling, revealed that the density of P. ulmi was higher in April, whereas the density of T. urticae was higher from May to August. This change may be due to a change in the frequency of pesticide spraying, ground vegetation management, a decrease in nitrogen fertilization, and the overall orchard management practices. However, this projection should be examined in more detail. On the basis of the findings of this study, it can be concluded that cultural practices, including fertilization, and environmental changes, such as pesticide spray frequency and integrated pest management practices, affect species dominance and population densities of the two mite species in apple orchards.
The study was carried out to investigate distribution and diversity of beetles with pitfall traps and beatings 3 times at Baegyang temple area of Naejangsan National park from July to September in 2010. A total of 333individuals belonging to 32 species from 13 families were captured beetles at Baegyang temple area of Naejangsan National park. The number of individuals by altitude was the highest at 200m, and was order of 500m>400m>700m. A total of 333 individuals belong to 32 species from 13 families were captured at Baegyang temple area of Naejangsan National park. The number of captured individuals by monthly was 95 on July, 178 on August and 60 on September, respectively. Dominance index was the highest to Attelabidae and was the lowest to Rutelidae. Dominance index by monthly was the highest on July and was the lowest on September. Diversity index showed the highest to Rutelidae in family and on August in monthly. Menhinich index was 1.75 which species abundance indicated by beetles at Baegyang temple area of Naejangsan National park.
Temporal variability in lake phytoplankton is controlled by a complex between hydrological and chemical factors, and biological interactions. We explored annual change of phytoplankton in Lake Daecheong, using phytoplankton analysis data from 1997 to 2002 (except 2000). The standing crop of phytoplankton was ranged from 3.5 x 10 to 1.5 x 106 cells mL$^{-1}$ and the highest mean value was at site 1. The class composition ratios of phytoplankton standing crop were divided into three classes. From January to March, diatoms showed a dominance (68.1-77.7%). From April to June, diatoms were mixed with cryptomonad etc. or blue-green algae. From July to October, blue-green algae showed a dominance (54.7-84.0%). In the case of green algae, the class composition ratios were below 10%. But green algae appeared all the year round.
We chose the Mt. Dalum area (located in Gijang-gun, Busan, Korea) for our survey, particularly The pine wilt disease zone and the non-permanent control area. This study investigates the effect of pine wilt disease on the distribution of beetle species in the process of ecosystem change due to insect control; pine forests treated for pine wilt disease were divided into insect control and non-control sites, respectively. The results of this study are as follows. Twen tyseven species belongs to 12 families were identified from 969 ground beetles collected from this sites. Species richness was the highest in Coleoptera (6 species, 469 individuals). In the control site, 21 species belongs to 10 families were identified from 228 individuals, while 24 species of 11 families from 533 individuals in the non-control area. The highest number of species were noted in June and July from the non- control and control sites, respectively. The highest number of insects in control and non-control sites was observed in July, while the lowest in September. Sipalinus gigas gigas, Spondylis buprestoides, Plesiophthalmus davidis, Calosoma maximowiczi, Damaster jankowskii jankowskii, and Damaster smaragdinus were captured in both study sites. Episomustur ntus and Glischrochilus ipsoides were only captured in the control site, while Macrodorcas rectus rectus and Pheropsophus javanus were only captured in the non-control site. Six beetles and five species (such as Calosoma maximowiczi) were found in the control site and six species (including Damaster smaragdinus) in the non-control site. The species distributions by altitude were 163, 518, and 258 individuals, at 100, 200 and 300 m sites, respectively. The diversity, evenness, and dominance indices in the control area were 0.764, 0.812, and 0.367, respectively. The diversity, evenness, and dominance indices in the non-control area were 0.927, 0.837, and 0.352, respectively. The similarity index between the control and non-control area was 80%.
In order to get basic information for establishing weed control methods in greenhouse, weed distribution was surveyed at 42 greenhouses in 10 cities and counties of Gyeongnam and Junnam area from September to December, 1995. Sixty nine weed species in 23 families which were composed of 28 annuals, 16 biennials and 25 perennials were identified. Broadleaf weed species was 50 species, followed by 8 species in grasses, and 11 species in sedges. Cruciferae was the most widely occurring family belong to 9 species, followed by 8 species in Compositae, Cyperaceae and Gramineae, respectively, 6 species in Polygonaceae, and the other 17 families have 1~3 species. The dominant weed species occurred in greenhouses based on summed dominance ratio of weeds were Cardamine flexuosa var. fallax, Digitaria sanguinalis, Eleusine indica, Stellaria aquatica, Centipeda minima, Mollugo pentaphylla, Portulaca oleracea, Rorippa islandica.

In this study, we wanted to obtain the information of the ecological impact of alien species on native fish communities. The Ichthyofauna and fish community in Joongchosan Reservoir and Bukchosan Reservoir in Gunsan-si Korea were investigated over the period from March to October 2020. During the survey period, a total of 1,895 individuals representing eight species, five families, and four orders were caught in the Joongchosan Reservoir. In the Bukchosan Reservoir, a total of 171 individuals were caught, representing seven species, five families, and three orders. The dominant species and subdominant species of Joongchosan Reservoir were Pseudorasvora parva (661 individuals, RA: 34.7%), and Rhodeus ocellatus (660 individuals, RA: 34.7%). Conversely, Micropterus salmoides (77 individuals, RA: 45.0%), and Carassius auratus (60 individuals, RA: 35.1%), were the two most common species in the Bukchosan Reservoir. The community indices showed a dominance of 0.697, diversity of 1.483, evenness of 0.713, and species richness of 0.928 in the Joongchosan Reservoir. In comparison, the community indices in the Bukchosan Reservoir showed a dominance of 0.801, diversity of 1.304, evenness of 0.670, and species richness of 1.167. This study confirms that the number of native fishes and the associated community diversity have decreased due to the influence of Micropterus salmoides. This highlights the need for removal of alien species from reservoirs, while simultaneously preventing future introductions.
Weed control is of fundamental importance when planting horticultural crops, particularly during the establishment phase. Weeds compete for nutrients, water and light, and can severely threaten the survival and early growth of newly planted crops. Failure to control weeds represents one of the single most important factors leading to crop loss. Knowledge on the existence of the diversity of weed species in greenhouses is of our main concern in this study in order to develop a most efficient and effective weed control strategies. Sixty-two greenhouses were surveyed in 3 cities and counties of Gyeongnam area in March to October 2009 to investigate the feature of weed occurrence in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) after harvesting of the main crops. Forty-one weed species were identified and classified to 18 families which were composed of 14 annual weeds, 18 summer annual weeds and 9 perennial weeds. On the other hand, broadleaf, grasses and sedges recorded with 30, 7 and 4 weed species, respectively. Asteraceae was the most dominant weed species (9 species) noted followed by Poaceae (7 species), Cyperaceae (4 species), Caryophyllaceae and Brassicaceae (3 species respectively) and other families have 1~2 species. The dominant weed species occurred in the greenhouse based on the summed dominance ratio. These weeds were Digitaria sanguinalis, Cyperus iria, Portulaca oleracea, Rorippa islandica, Mazus japonicas, Cardamine flexousa, and Eclipta prostrata and others. Weed occurrence in the greenhouse after horticultural crops consisted of summer annuals (4 species), winter annuals (3 species), and perennial annuals (1 specie). The dominant species occurred in tilled soil based on summed dominance ratio of weeds were Cardamine flexousa (88.1%), Eclipta prostrate (57.4%) and Portulaca oleracea (55.2%). Comparison of weed occurrence was thoroughly surveyed also in which field without PVC, weed species were Portulaca oleracea (55.2), Eclipta prostrata (57.9%) and Trigonotis peduncularis (25.1%) and field with PVC, the identified weeds were Portulaca oleracea (98.75), Trigonotis peduncularis (49.1%), and Eclipta prostrata (36.8%).

In most self-incompatible plant species, recognition of self-pollen is controlled by a single locus, termed the S-locus. The self-incompatibility (SI) system in Brassica is controlled sporophytically by multiple alleles at a single locus, designated as S, and involves cell-cell communication between male and female. Two highly polymorphic S locus genes, SLG (S locus glycoprotein) and SRK (S receptor kinase), have been identified, both of which are expressed predominantly in the stigmatic papillar cell. Gain-of-function experiments have demonstrated that SRK solely determines S haplotype-specificity of the stigma, while SLG enhances the recognition reaction of SI. The sequence analysis of the S locus genomic region of B. campestris (syn. rapa) has led to the identification of an anther-specific gene, designated as SP11/SCR, which is the male S determinant. Molecular analysis has demonstrated that the dominance relationships between S alleles in the stigma were determined by SRK itself, but not by the relative expression level. In contrast, the expression of SP11/SCR from the recessive S allele was specifically suppressed in the S heterozygote, suggesting that the dominance relationships in pollen were determined by the expression level of SP11/SCR. Furthermore, recent studies on recessive allele-specific DNA methylation of Brassica self-incompatibility alleles demonstrate that DNA methylation patterns in plants can vary temporally and spatially in each generation. In this review, we firstly present overview of self incompatibility system in Brassica and then describe dominance relationships in Brassica self- incompatibility regulated by allele-specific DNA methylation.
