  • According to design specifications for structural safety, a bridge in initial design step has been modelled to have larger self-weight, external loads and less stiffness than those of real one in service. Thereby measured buffeting responses of existing bridge show different distributions from those of the design model in design step. In order to obtain accurate buffeting responses of the in-site bridge, the analysis model needs to be modified by considering the measured natural frequencies. Until now, a Manual Tuning Method (MTM) has been widely used to obtain the Measurement-based Model(MBM) that has equal natural frequencies to the real bridge. However, since state variables can be selected randomly and its result is not apt to converge exact rapidly, MTM takes a lot of effort and elapsed time. This study presents Buffeting Response Correction Method (BRCM) to obtain more exact buffeting response above MTM. The BRCM is based on the idea the commonly used frequency domain buffeting analysis does not need all structural properties except mode shapes, natural frequencies and damping ratio. BRCM is used to improve each modal buffeting responses of the design model by substituting measured natural frequencies. The measured natural frequencies are determined from acceleration time-history in ordinary vibration of the real bridge. As illustrated examples, simple beam is applied to compare the results of BRCM with those of a assumed MBM by numerical simulation. Buffeting responses of BRCM are shown to be appropriate for those of in-site bridge and the difference is less than 3% between the responses of BRCM and MTM. Therefore, BRCM can calculate easily and conveniently the buffeting responses and improve effectively maintenance and management of in-site bridge than MTM.

  • Carbonaceous aerosol is generally classified into OC (organic carbon) and EC (elemental carbon) by thermal optical analysis. Both NIOSH (National institute of occupational safety and health) with high temperature (HighT) and IMPROVE-A (Interagency monitoring of protected visual environments) with low temperature (LowT) protocols are widely used. In this study, both protocols were applied for ambient $PM_{2.5}$ samples (Daejeon, Korea) in order to underpin differences in OC and EC measurements. An excellent agreement between NIOSH and IMPROVE-A protocol was observed for TC (total carbon). However, significant differences between OC and EC appeared and the differences were larger for EC than OC. The main differences between two protocols are temperature profile and charring correction method. For the same charring correction method, HighT_OC was 10% higher than LowT_ OC, while HighT_EC was 15% and 33% lower than LowT_EC for TOT (thermal-optical transmittance) and TOR (thermal-optical reflectance), respectively. This difference may be caused by the temperature of OC4 in He step and possibly difference in POC (pryorilized OC) formation. For the same temperature profile, OC by TOT was about 26% higher than that by TOR. In contrast, EC by TOT was about 50% lower than that by TOR. POC was also dependent on both temperature profile and the charring correction method, showing much distinctive differences for the charring correction method (i.e., POC by TOT to POC by TOR ratio is about 2). This difference might be caused by different characteristics between transmittance and reflectance for monitoring POC formation within filters. Results from this study showed that OC and EC depends on applied analysis protocol as shown other studies. Because of the nature of the thermal optical analysis, it may not be possible to have an absolute standard analysis protocol that is applicable for any ambient $PM_{2.5}$. Nevertheless, in order to provide consistent measurement results for scientists and policy makers, future studies should focus on developing a harmonized standard analysis protocol that is suitable for a specific air domain and minimizes variations in OC and EC measurement results. In addition, future elaborate studies are required to find and understand the causes of the differences.

  • Latent heat storage system using micro-encapsuled phase change material is effective method for floor heating of house and building. The temperature profile in capsule block and flow rate of hot water are important parameters for the development of heat storage system. In the present study, a mathematical model based on 3-D, non-steady state, Navier-Stokes equations, scalar conservation equations and turbulence model ($\kappa$-$\varepsilon$), is used to predict the temperature profiles in capsule and the velocity vectors in hot water pipe. The multi-block grids and fine grids embedding are used to join the circle in hot water pipe and square in capsule block. The phase change process of the capsule is quite complex not only because the size of phase change material is very small, but also because phase change material is mixed with the cement to form thermal storage block. In calculation, it's assumed that the phenomena of phase change is limited only the thermal properties of phase change material and the change of boundary is not happened in capsule. The purpose of this study is to calculate the temperature profiles in capsule block and velocity vectors in hot water pipe using the numerical calculation. Two kinds of thermal boundary condition were considered, the first (case 1) is the adiabatic condition for the both outside surfaces of the wall, the second (case 2) is the case in which one surface is natural convection with atmosphere and another surface is adaibatic. Calculation results are shown that the temperature profile in capsule block for case 1 is higher than that for case 2 due to less heat loss in adaibatic surface. Specially, in the domain of near Y=0, the difference of temperature is greater in case 1 than in case 2. The detailed experimental data of capsule block on the temperature profile and the thermal properties such as specific heat and coefficient of heat transfer with the various temperature are required to predict more exact phenomena of heat transfer.

  • Image resizing (or scaling) is one of the most essential issues for the success of visual service because image data has to be adapted to the variety of display features. For 2D imaging, the image scaling is generally accomplished by 2D image re-sampling (i.e., up-/down-sampling). However, when it comes to stereoscopic 3D images, 2D re-sampling methods are inadequate because additional consideration on the third dimension of depth is not incorporated. Practically, stereoscopic 3D image scaling is process with left/right images, not stereoscopic 3D image itself, because the left/right Images are only tangible data. In this paper, we analyze stereoscopic 3D image scaling from two aspects: geometrical deformation and frequency-domain aliasing. A number of 3D displays are available in the market and they have various screen dimensions. As we have more varieties of the displays, efficient stereoscopic 3D image scaling is becoming more emphasized. We present the recommendations for the 3D scaling from the geometric analysis and propose a disparity-adaptive filter for anti-aliasing which could occur during the image scaling process.

  • Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder and is characterized by the progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. Although many studies showed that the aggregation of $\alpha$-synuclein might be involved in the pathogenesis of PD, its protective properties against oxidative stress remain to be elucidated. In this study, human wild type and mutant $\alpha$-synuclein genes were fused with a gene fragment encoding the nine amino acid trans activator of transcription (Tat) protein transduction domain of HIV-l in a bacterial expression vector to produce a genetic in-frame WT Tat-$\alpha$-synuclein (wild type) and mutant Tat-a-synucleins (mutants; A30P and A53T), respectively, and we investigated the protective effects of wild type and mutant Tat-$\alpha$-synucleins in vitro and in vivo. WT Tat-$\alpha$-synuclein rapidly transduced into an astrocyte cells and protected the cells against paraquat induced cell death. However, mutant Tat-$\alpha$-synucleins did not protect at all. In the mice models exposed to the herbicide paraquat, the WT Tat-$\alpha$-synuclein completely protected against dopaminergic neuronal cell death, whereas mutants failed in protecting against oxidative stress. We found that these protective effects were characterized by increasing the expression level of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) in the neuronal cells and this expression level was dependent on the concentration of transduced WT Tat-$\alpha$-synuclein. These results suggest that transduced Tat-$\alpha$-synuclein might protect cell death from oxidative stress by increasing the expression level of HSP70 in vitro and in vivo and this may be of potential therapeutic benefit in the pathogenesis of PD.

  • Nonlinear analysis of RC containment structure under thermal load and pressure is presented to trace the behaviour after an assumed LOCA. The temperature distribution varying with time through the wall thickness is determined by transient finite element analysis with the two time level scheme in time domain. The layered shell finite elements are used to represent the containment structures in nuclear power plants. Both geometric and material nonlinearities are taken into account in the finite element formulation. The constitutive relation of concrete is modeled according to Drucker-Prager yield criteria in compression. Tension stiffening model is used to represent the tensile behaviour of concrete including bond effect. The reinforcing bars are modeled by smeared layer at the location of reinforcements accounting elasto-plastic axial behaviors. The steel liner model under Von Mises yield criteria is adopted to represent elastic-perfect plastic behaviour. Geometric nonlinearity is formulated to consider the large displacement effect. Thermal stress components are determined by the initial strain concept during each time step. The temperature differential between any two consecutive time steps is considered as a load incremental. The numerical results from this study reveal that nonlinear temperature gradient based on transient thermal analysis will produces excessive large displacement. Nonlinear behavior of containment structures up to ultimate stage can be traced reallistically. The present study allows more realistic analysis of concrete containment structures in nuclear power plants.

  • A vertically-averaged, two-dimensional version of the Princeton Ocean Model has been applied to the South Sea to simulate the circulation driven by tides and inflows/outflows across open boundaries. To incorporate both forcing properly, a two-step modeling approach is adopted, in which the tidal circulation is first simulated by specifying the tides along the open boundaries, and then both the calculated tidal currents and the observed steady mean currents are prescribed across the open boundaries. Model results show that the steady, subtidal circulation of the South Sea is different from the residual circulation due to tidal rectification, and subtidal currents become locally as strong as tidal currents. The Cheju Current entering the model domain across the Cheju Strait flows eastward in general while shifting onshore or offshore areas following local isobaths. The Tsushima Current entering across the southern boundary reaches farther to the north in the eastern vicinity of Cheju-Do as compared to that entering across other parts of the southern boundary. The Tsushima Current turns to the east, merges with the Cheju Current, and both the Cheju and Tsushima Current exit to the East Sea through the western channel of the Korea Strait. An intensification of the outflow occurs over the deep trough adjacent to the Tsushima Island, which appears to be due to the formation of the frictional boundary layer in order to remove excess positive relative vorticity generated by an increase in the layer thickness. The circulation driven by both the tidal and inflows/outflows is different from that driven by each forcing separately in coastal areas, which implies that both forcings should be considered simultaneously in the simulation of more realistic coastal circulation.

  • A fully automatic and computationally efficient method is proposed for intelligent display of soccer video on small multimedia mobile devices. The rapid progress of the multimedia signal processing has contributed to the extensive use of multimedia devices with a small LCD panel. With these emerging small mobile devices, the video sequences captured for standard- or HDTV broadcasting may give the small-display-viewers uncomfortable experiences in understanding what is happening in a scene. For instance, in a soccer video sequence taken by a long-shot camera technique, the tiny objects (e.g., soccer ball and players) may not be clearly viewed on the small LCD panel. Thus, an intelligent display technique is needed for small-display-viewers. To this end, one of the key technologies is to determine region of interest (ROI), which is a part of the scene that viewers pay more attention to than other regions. In this paper, the focus is on soccer video display for mobile devices. Instead of taking visual saliency into account, we take domain-specific approach to exploit the characteristics of the soccer video. The proposed scheme includes three modules; ground color learning, shot classification, and ROI determination. The experimental results show the propose scheme is capable of intelligent video display on mobile devices.

  • A thousands of chairs have designed from the Victorian era to the present. Thonet's Nol4 chair in 1859, Wright's high-back chair in 1904, Ritveld's red/blue chair in 1917, Breuer's Wassily chair in 1925, Aalto's Paimio chair in 1932, Eames's DAR chair in 1948, Piero Gatti's Sacco chair in 1969, Starck's Von Volgelsang chair in 1984, Stumpf's Aeron Chair in 1992, Little's 'Coat of arms' chair in 1994 - the list of architects who have seized the opportunity to express their theories in the design of a chair is seemingly endless. Architects such as Machintosh(1868-1928), Wright(1807-1959), Aalto(1898-1976) included chairs within their artistic schemes for interiors and buildings. But as the manufacture of chairs moved away from the domain of the craftsman towards that of the industrial process, architects were also ideally positioned, with their background knowledge of engineering, to pioneer innovative chair design within the constraints of modern manufacturing technology. Beyond matters of function and structure, the fundamental worth of chairs, past or present, lies in their communication of attitudes, ideas and values. The persuasiveness of a chair depend on the clarity of its rhetoric. Chair has become an ideal medium for designers to make their visual statements and construct their individual manifestos. In chair design there is a ping-pong game played out between absurd and useful design, and this game is one way in which the design profession explores itself.

  • The design of large complex mechanical systems, such as automobile, aircraft, and ship, is a kind of Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) because it requires both experience and expertise in many areas. With the rapid development of technology and the demand to improve human convenience, the complexity of these systems is increasing further. The design of such a complex system requires an integrated system design, i.e., MDO, which can fuse not only domain-specific knowledge but also knowledge, experience, and perspectives in various fields. In the past, the MDO relied heavily on the designer's intuition and experience, making it less efficient in terms of accuracy and time efficiency. Process integration and the design optimization framework mainly support MDO owing to the evolution of IT technology. This paper examined the procedure and methods to implement an efficient MDO with reasonable effort and time using RCE, an open-source PIDO framework. As a benchmarking example, the authors applied the proposed MDO methodology to a bulk carrier's conceptual design synthesis model. The validity of this proposed MDO methodology was determined by visual analysis of the Pareto optimal solutions.
