A Study on Control System Design for Ship Mooring Winch System (무어링 윈치 제어시스템 설계에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, the authors consider control system design problem of barge type surface vessel. It is based on the Dynamic Positioning System(DPS) design problem. The main role of barge ship is to carry and supply the materials to the floating units and other places. To carry out this job, it should be positioned in the specified area. Even though sometimes the thrust systems are installed on it, in general the mooring winch system with the rope is used. It may be difficult to compare the control performances of two types. But, if we consider this problem in point of usefulness, we can easily find out that the winch control system is more useful and applicable to the real field than the thrust control system except a special use. Therefore, in this paper we consider a single type mooring winch system and control system design problem in which accurate position control is needed. Because this result can be extended to the general type mooring system in which a number of winch are installed. At first, a mathematical model of winch is obtained and evaluated to verify the usefulness for control system design by experiment. Also, the disturbance model is extracted from experiment data to evaluate the strength of the uncertainty. Based on this results, the robust control system is designed and control performance is evaluated by simulation.

Hypothermia alleviates hypoxic ischemia-induced dopamine dysfunction and memory impairment in rats

  • Hypoxic ischemia injury is a common cause of functional brain damage, resulting from a decrease in cerebral blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain. The main problems associated with hypoxic ischemia to the brain are memory impairment and dopamine dysfunction. Hypothermia has been suggested to ameliorate the neurological impairment induced by various brain insults. In this study, we investigated the effects of hypothermia on memory function and dopamine synthesis following hypoxic ischemia to the brain in rats. For this purpose, a step-down avoidance task, a radial eight-arm maze task, and immunohistochemistry for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) and 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) were performed. The present results indicated that the hypoxic ischemia-induced disturbance of the animal's performances and spatial working memory was associated with a decrement in TH expression in the substantia nigra and striatum, and an increase in cell proliferation in the hippocampal dentate gyrus. Hypothermia treatment improved the animals' performance and spatial working memory by suppressing the decrement in TH expression in the substantia nigra and striatum and the increase in cell proliferation in the dentate gyrus. We suggest that hypothermia can be an efficient therapeutic modality to facilitate recovery following hypoxic ischemia injury to the brain, presumably by modulating the dopaminergic cell loss.

Study on Following of Parmeter ${\alpha}$ of 2-DOF PID Controller Using Fuzzy Algorithm

  • 2-mass system is generally used as controller of the variable-speed to transfer electromotion power to mechanical load such as industrial robot, driving parts of electric vehicle, rolling machine system of steel plant and driving parts of elevator. In this case, PI controller is often used as a velocity controller because of simplicity of system. But PI control algorithm is not enough for obtaining the control characteristics required for this system. To solve this problem, 2-mass system based on the PID controller derives the optimum PID parameters by pole assignment and estimation of the ITAE performance index. In this case, the system have tenacious properties about disturbance, but it causes extreme overshoot and vibration because of rapidly output of controller in early transient response about desired value. And if speed control system is applied by 2-DOF parameter ${\alpha}$, a temporary value, we must induce most suitable parameter by complicate pole assignment and estimation of the ITAE performance index whenever ${\alpha}$ changes. In this paper, to solve this problem we suggest control algorithm to followed exactly value of ${\alpha}$ as 2-DOF parameter by using fuzzy algorithm . So, intelligence algorithm modeled by human knowledge, experience, teachability and judgment follow exact ${\alpha}$ value and it can compose the efficient 2-DOF PID controller to improve following performance, overshoot decrease.

  • Resilience is defined as the intrinsic ability of a system to adjust its functioning prior to, during, or following changes and disturbances, so that it can sustain required operations or functions with the related systems under both expected and unexpected conditions. Resilience engineering is a relatively new paradigm for safety management that focuses on how to cope with complexity under pressure or disturbance to achieve successful functioning. This study aims to develop a quantitative resilience model for severe accident response organizations of nuclear power plants using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. First, we investigated severe accident response organizations based on a radiation emergency plan in the Korean case and developed a qualitative resilience model for the organizations with resilience-influencing factors, which have been identified in the author's previous studies. Then, a quantitative model for entire severe accident response organizations was developed by using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method with a tool for System Dynamics. For applying the AHP method, several experts who are working on implementing, regulating or researching the severe accident response participated in collecting their expertise on the relative importance between all the possible relations in the model. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to discuss which factors have the most influenceable on resilience.

Effects of Nitrogen Deposition on Terrestrial Ecosystems (대기 질소강하물이 육상 생태계에 미치는 영향 및 국내 연구제안)

  • Effects of atmospheric nitrogen deposition on terrestrial ecosystems were reviewed and discussed in this paper. The amount of nitrogen deposition has increased rapidly in Europe, North America and Korean due to industrialization, increase in fossil fuel combustion(automobiles in particular), and intensive agricultural activities. Nitrogen input through such deposition may enhance primary productivity at early stage, but it could cause nitrogen saturation and hence deterioration of forests of disturbance of systems in the long term. Mechanisms of the deterioration of forests by nitrogen deposition include nutrients imbalance, soil acidification, and immobilization of toxic ions. In addition, nitrogen deposition may impede the decomposition rates of soil organic matter, and induce eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems by enhanced leaching of nitrate. Finally, I propose several topics in relation to nitrogen deposition, which warrant further studies in Korea.

  • A control of the body posture and movement is maintained by the vestibular system, vision, and proprioceptors. Afferent signals from those receptors are transmitted to the vestibular nuclear complex, and the efferent signals from the vestibular nuclear complex control the eye movement and skeletal muscle contract. The postural disturbance caused by loss of the vestibular function results in nausea, vomiting, vertigo and loss of craving for life. The purpose of this study is to develop a off-vertical rotatory system for evaluating the function of semicircular canals and otolith organs, selectively, and visual stimulation system for- stimulation with horizontal, vortical and 3D patterns. The Off-vortical axis rotator is composed of a comportable chair, a DC servo-motor with reducer and a tilting table controlled by PMSM. And a double feedback loop system containing a velocity feedback loop and a position feedback loop is applied to the servo controlled rotatory chair system. Horizontal, vertical, and 3D patterns of the visual stimulation for applying head mounted display are developed. And wireless portable systems for optokinetic stimulation and recording system of the eye movement is also constructed. The gain, phase, and symmetry is obtained from analysis of the eye movement induced by vestibular and visual stimulation. Detailed data were described.

A Study on the Load Frequency Control of Power System Using an Optimal Modulation Controller (최적 변조제어기를 이용한 전력시스템의 부하주파수 제어에 관한 연구)

  • The load frequency control(LFC) of power system is one of important subjects in view of system operation and control. That is, even though the rapid load disturbances are applied to the given power system, the stable and reliable power should be supplied to the users, converging unconditionally and rapidly the frequency deviations and the tie-line power flow ones of each area into allowable boundary limits. Nonetheless of such needs, if the internal parameter perturbation and the sudden load variation are given, the unstable phenomena of power systems can be often brought out because of the large frequency deviation and the unsuppressible power line one. So, an optimal modulation controller for UC of multi-area power system is designed by a recursive algorithm that determines the state weighting matrix Q of a linear quadratic performance criterion. The optimal modulation controller is based on optimal control and can obtain the exact dynamic response of the UC of multi-area power system in the time domain. The performances of the resultant optimal modulation control, that is, the steady-state deviations of frequency and tie-line power flow and the related dynamics, were investigated and analyzed in detail by being applied to the UC of multi-area power system in the perturbations of predetermined internal parameters. Through the simulation results tried variously in this paper for disturbance of stepwise load changes, the superiorities of the proposed optimal modulation controller in robustness and stability were proved.

Optimal Reserve Allocation to Maximize Kinetic Energy in a Wind Power Plant

  • Modern wind generators (WGs) are forced or encouraged to participate in frequency control in the form of inertial and/or primary control to improve the frequency stability of power systems. To participate in primary control, WGs should perform deloaded operation that maintains reserve power using speed and/or pitch-angle control. This paper proposes an optimization formulation that allocates the required reserve to WGs to maximize the kinetic energy (KE) stored in a wind power plant (WPP). The proposed optimization formulation considers the rotor speed margin of each WG to the maximum speed limit, which is different from each other because of the wake effects in a WPP. As a result, the proposed formulation allows a WG with a lower rotor speed to retain more KE in the WPP. The performance of the proposed formulation was investigated in a 100-MW WPP consisting of 20 units of 5-MW permanent magnet synchronous generators using an EMTP-RV simulator. The results show that the proposed formulation retains the maximum amount of KE with the same reserve and successfully increases the frequency nadir in a power system by releasing the stored KE in a WPP in the case of a disturbance.

Evaluation of Jeju/Tsushima Hermatypic Corals as Sea Surface Temperature (SST) Recorders (제주/쓰시마 조초성 산호의 수온 기록자로서의 가능성 평가)

  • In an effort to develop high-resolution sea surface temperature (SST) proxies for mid-latitude regions, two massive reef-building coral species, Alveopora and Favia, were collected from Jeju and Tsushima Islands, respectively. Their skeletons were subsequently analyzed for annual growth banding, Sr/Ca and Mg/Ca ratios. Hermatypic corals are thinly distributed in the waters of Jeju Island, where Alveopora japonica was the only dominant coral species. A higher diversity of hermatypic corals were observed in the waters of Tsushima Island, where Favia sp. was the most common coral species and even forming an about 6-m-high reef structure. Both Alveopora and Favia showed annual growth layers consisting of couplets of high- and low-density bands. Sr/Ca ratio of both species and Mg/Ca ratio of Alveopora also showed seasonal variation, likely reflecting SST variation. These results suggest the possibility that Alveopora and Favia species can be used as potential SST proxies. However, this study also highlights the potential growth disturbance of middle latitude corals due to high rainfall during monsoon and low SST during winter. This possibility should be taken into account in the investigation of Sr/Ca(Mg/Ca)-SST relationships.

  • Neural network is used in many fields of control systems currently. However, It is not easy to obtain input-output pattern when neural network is used for the system of a single feedback controller and it is difficult to get satisfied performance with neural network when load changes rapidly or disturbance is applied. To resolve these problems, this paper proposes a new mode to implement a neural network controller by installing a real object in place of activation function of Neural Network output node. As the Neural Network self adaptive control system is designed in simple structure neural network input-output pattern problem is solved naturally and real tin Loaming becomes possible through general back propagation algorithm. The effect of the proposed Neural Network self adaptive control algorithm was verified in a test of controlling the speed of a A.C. servo motor equipped with a high speed computing capable DSP (TMS320C32) on which the proposed algorithm was loaded.
