  • In this study, several types of rainfall time distribution of the probabilistic rainfall amount have been applied to the Sihwa Lake, located in Gyounggi Province, Korea and their runoff characteristics, obtained by the Hec-Hms program, according to the rainfall distribution types, were compared and analysed. And then, the influences of the above rainfall distribution types of the highest water level of the reservoir, computed through the reservoir flood routing, were analysed. The tidal variation was considered, performing the flood routing and, in addition, the new program, called “IWSEA”, which can compute the reservoir water level, was developed. To conclude, when the Mononobe type of the rainfall distribution was used, the largest inflow flood discharge into the reservoir was performed and the highest reservoir water level was obtained when the Pilgrim-Cordery type of the rainfall distribution was applied.

  • The change of rainfall pattern and hydrologic factors due to climate change increases the occurrence probability of agricultural reservoir water shortage. Water supply assessment of reservoir is usually performed current reservoir level compared to historical water levels or the simulation of reservoir operation based on the water budget analysis. Since each reservoir has the native property for watershed, irrigation district and irrigation water requirement, it is necessary to improve the assessment methods of agricultural reservoir water capability about water resources system. This study proposed a practical methods that water supply vulnerability assessment for an agricultural reservoir based on a concept of probabilistic reliability. The vulnerability assessment of water supply is calculated from probability distribution of water demand condition and water supply condition that influences on water resources management and reservoir operations. The water supply vulnerability indices are estimated to evaluate the performance of water supply on agricultural reservoir system, and thus it is recommended a more objective method to evaluate water supply reliability.

  • Water supply capacity and operational capability in agricultural reservoirs are expressed differently in the limited storage due to seasonal and local variation of precipitation. Since agricultural water supply and demand basically assumes the uncertainty of hydrological phenomena, it is necessary to improve probabilistic approach for potential risk assessment of water supply capacity in reservoir for enhanced operational storage management. Here, it was introduced the irrigation vulnerability characteristic curves to represent the water supply capacity corresponding to probability distribution of the water demand from the paddy field and water supply in agricultural reservoir. Irrigation vulnerability probability was formulated using reliability analysis method based on water supply and demand probability distribution. The lower duration of irrigation vulnerability probability defined as the time period requiring intensive water management, and it will be considered to assessment tools as a risk mitigated water supply planning in decision making with a limited reservoir storage.

  • Irrigation Reservoir Water Supply Index(IRWSI), which can be applied to the effective supply and management of the irrigation water resources, was developed. IRWSI was formulated as resealed nonexceedance probabilities of two hydrologic components : reservoir storage ratio and precipitation. To generate nonexceedance probability of hydrologic component, it was important to define the optimal one among the various probability distribution function in the state of nature. To define an optimal probability distribution, in this study, four types of probability distribution function were tested by the K-S fitting, and for the calculation of IRWSI, reservoir storage ratio(%) and precipitation used Normal distribution & Gamma distribution, respectively. In this study, the weight coefficients of a and b for each hydrologic component, which is precipitation and reservoir storage ratio, was decided as 0.8 and 0.2, respectively. While some studies changed weight coefficients according to the size of basin area, this study used same values without considering that. From the analysis of drought characteristics, it was found that the IRWSI was sensitive to the size of irrigation area rather than the size of basin area, and the south-eastern region of Korea had been suffered from severe drought damage.

  • Kojima Lake in Okayama prefecture is a freshing reservoir constructed adjacent to the oldest reclaimed land in Japan. This lake has a serious water quality problem because two urban rivers are flowing into it. In the present study, unsupervised classification was performed at intervals of several years using Landsat MSS data in the past 15 years. After geometric correction of these data, MSS data corresponding geographically to the field observation data were extracted and subjected to the multivariate analysis. Water quality distribution in the lake was estimated using the regression equation obtained as a result. In addition, two - dimensional and three-dimensional numerical simulations were performed and compared with the distribution obtained from the satellite images. Behavior of the reservoir flows is complicated and water quality distribution varies greatly with the flows. Here, I report the results of analysis on three factors, field observation, numerical simulation and satellite images.

  • Determining sizes and the locations of reservoirs in the water distribution system(WDS) with multi-reservoirs is much difficult than that with single reservoir. The extended period simulation(EPS) models provide more comprehensive analysis of water distribution systems than the steady-state models can do. Therefore, EPS models should be applied to the WDS with multi-reservoirs. This study is to investigate the variations of required reservoir sizes and residual nodal pressures according to reservoir locations. In this study, EPS was applied to analyze an artificial and a real WDS under several water demand patterns. As a result, it was found that water demand patterns make no significant differences in the determining of the reservoir size, if they have similar peaking factors. And the variations of the peaking factor should be carefully checked in the design and the analysis of the WDS with multi-reservoirs, because the peaking factor itself will affect the minimum allowable sizes of reservoirs in those systems.

  • A calculation model of reservoir pressure field distribution around multiple production wells in a heavy oil reservoir is established, which can overcome the unreasonable uniform-pressure value calculated by the traditional mathematical model in the multiwell mining areas. A calculating program is developed based on the deduced equations by using Visual Basic computer language. Based on the proposed mathematical model, the effects of drainage rate and formation permeability on the distribution of reservoir pressure are studied. Results show that the reservoir pressure drops most at the wellbore. The farther the distance away from the borehole, the sparser the isobaric lines distribute. Increasing drainage rate results in decreasing reservoir pressure and bottom-hole pressure, especially the latter. The permeability has a significant effect on bottom hole pressure. The study provides a reference basis for studying the dynamic pressure field distribution before thermal recovery technology in heavy oilfield and optimizing construction parameters.

  • Hydroacoustic surveys were conducted for spatio-temporal distribution and size estimation of fish in the Yongdam reservoir, Korea, from April to July 2014. Acoustic data were collected along acoustic transects using a 120 kHz scientific echosounder. The received acoustic data were the in situ acoustic target strength (dB) and nautical area scattering coefficient ($m^2/mile^2$). Data on fish behavioral patterns and size were collected using a DIDSON acoustic camera at stationary stations. Fish were mainly distributed in the center channel and close to the outer Yongdam reservoir. Acoustic density of fish in the summer season were higher than in the spring season. The seasonal vertical distribution pattern of fish aggregations may be strongly related to the vertical temperature structure. The size distribution of fish obtained from an acoustic camera correlated well with the acoustic size of fish from an echosounder.

  • Seasonal and vertical distribution of water quality were investigated from May 2001 to June 2002 in Kumoh reservoir located nearby Kumi City, Kyungpook. Kumoh reservoir that lost the role of agricultural irrigation is currently of rapid eutrophication. The vertical distribution of DO was observed clinograde with hypolimnetic anoxic zone. T-P concentrations at the surface ranged from 0.008 to 0.152 mgP/L and T-N concentrations ranged from 1.4 to 3.0 mgN/L. The vertical and seasonal variation of T-N was smaller than T-P. DOC concentrations, indicator of organic matter pollution, ranged from 2.8 to 5.4 mgC/L. Apportionment of Total-DOC (T-DOC) indicated that 14% of T-DOC was attributed to Labile-DOC(L-DOC) and the rest was due to Refractory-DOC(R-DOC). The values of TSI(Trophic State Index) ranged between 44 and 52 indicating that Kumoh reservoir is under mesotrophic condition. The results of this study indicate that Kumoh reservoir is likely to be under influence of eutrophication and thus water quality will be aggravated. Therefore, the Kumoh reservoir requires further treatment to improve water quality and a plan of the reusing water resource should be developed.

  • This study analyzed the effect of irrigation reservoirs, antecedent soil moisture conditions (AMC) and Huff time distribution on peak discharge using Monte Carlo simulation. The peak discharge was estimated for four different cases in combination of irrigation reservoir capacity, AMC, and Huff time distribution. Applying 100% reservoir capacity or AMC-III, the peak discharges corresponding return periods of 50~300 years were overestimated by 25~30% compared to those of cases that considered the probability of occurrence for individual condition. Applying the 3rd quantile huff distribution, the peak discharges were overestimated by 5% over the peak discharge that considered the probability of occurrence. The overall results indicated that the effect on the peak flood of Huff distribution was less than AMC and reservoir storage.
