This paper proposes a method for expensive black box optimization using radial basis functions (RBFs). The proposed algorithm is a computational strategy that uses a RBF model approximating the expensive black box function to predict an optimum. First, a RBF-based approximation technique is introduced and a sampling plan for estimation of the black box function is described. Then the proposed algorithm is explained, which presents the pseudo-codes for implementation and the detailed description of each step performed in the optimization process. In addition, numerical experiments will be given to analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm, by investigating computation accuracy, number of function evaluations, and convergence history. Finally, geometric distance problem as application example will be also presented for showing the algorithm applicability to different engineering problems.

This paper proposes two distance measures between two cumulative hazard functions that can be obtained by comparing their difference and ratio, respectively. Then we estimate the measures and present goodness of t test statistics. Since the proposed test statistics are expressed in terms of the cumulative hazard functions, we can easily give more weights on earlier (or later) departures in cumulative hazards if we like to place an emphasis on earlier (or later) departures. We also show that these test statistics present comparable performances with other well-known test statistics based on the empirical distribution function for an exponential null distribution. The proposed test statistic is an omnibus test which is applicable to other lots of distributions than an exponential distribution.
A comparison between theoretical and measured transfer function, which relates structure-borne noise source level to underwater radiated noise, of a naval ship is presented in this study. Transfer functions are obtained by dividing far field underwater noise by the value of structure borne noise source levels below machinery mounts. In prediction, statistical energy analysis of the whole ship structure is used to get vibration levels of wetted hull plates below water line. Then, far field radiated noise is calculated by summing up contributions from each plates using vibration levels and radiation efficiencies. And 1/3-octave band underwater sound pressure at the distance of 1 m away from the hull were measured to get experimental transfer functions. The two transfer functions are compared to show resonable agreements in spite of the subtle physical differences between each other.
In this paper, we deal with the separation of data by concurrently determined, piecewise nonlinear discriminant functions. Toward the end, we develop a new $l_1$-distance norm error metric and cast the problem as a mixed 0-1 integer and linear programming (MILP) model. Given a finite number of discriminant functions as an input, the proposed model considers the synergy as well as the individual role of the functions involved and implements a simplest nonlinear decision surface that best separates the data on hand. Hence, exploiting powerful MILP solvers, the model efficiently analyzes any given data set for its piecewise nonlinear separability. The classification of four sets of artificial data demonstrates the aforementioned strength of the proposed model. Classification results on five machine learning benchmark databases prove that the data separation via the proposed MILP model is an effective supervised learning methodology that compares quite favorably to well-established learning methodologies.
This paper describes the construction of an autonomous mobile robot with functions of collision avoidance and speech recognition that is used for teaching path of the robot. The human voice as a teaching method provides more convenient user-interface to mobile robot. For safe navigation, the autonomous mobile robot needs abilities to recognize surrounding environment and avoid collision. We use u1trasonic sensors to obtain the distance from the mobile robot to the various obstacles. By navigation algorithm, the robot forecasts the possibility of collision with obstacles and modifies a path if it detects dangerous obstacles. For these functions, the robot system is composed of four separated control modules, which are a speech recognition module, a servo motor control module, an ultrasonic sensor module, and a main control module. These modules are integrated by CAN(controller area network) in order to provide real-time communication.

The linear and quadratic discrimination functions based on normal theory are widely used to classify an observation to one of predefined groups. But the discriminant functions are sensitive to outliers. A high breakdown procedure to estimate location and scatter of multivariate data is the minimum volume ellipsoid or MVE estimator To obtain high breakdown classifiers outliers in multivariate data are detected by using the robust Mahalanobis distance based on MVE estimators and the weighted estimators are inserted in the functions for classification. A samll-sample MOnte Carlo study shows that the high breakdown robust procedures perform better than the classical classifiers.

An optimal path generation method considering the safety of UGV(Unmanned Ground Vehicle) is proposed and demonstrated through examples. Among various functions of UGV, real-time obstacle avoidance is a key issue to realize realistic scenario in FCS(Future Combat Systems). A two-dimensional narrow corridor environment is considered as a test field. For each step of UGV movement, two objectives are considered: One is to minimize the distance to the target and the other to maximize the distance to the nearest point of an obstacle. A weighted objective function is used in the optimization problem. Equality and inequality constraints are taken to secure the UGV's dynamics and safety. The weighting factors are controlled by a fuzzy controller which is constructed by a fuzzy rule set and membership functions. Simulations are performed for two cases. First the weighting factors are considered as constant values to understand the characteristics of the corresponding solutions and then as variables that are adjusted by the fuzzy controller. The results are satisfactory for realistic situations considered. The proposed optimal path generation with the fuzzy control is expected to be well applicable to real environment.
