Relationships Between Average Travel Speed, Time-Delayed Rate, and Volume on Two-lane Highways with Simulation Data (2차로도로 평균 통행속도-총지체율-교통량 관계 곡선 재정립)

  • PURPOSES : Two-lane highways have one lane in each direction, and lane changing and passing maneuvers take place in the opposing lane depending on the availability of passing sight distance. 2001 Korea Highway Capacity Manual (KHCM) is classified into two classes of two-lane highways (Type I, II), and average travel speed and time-delayed rate are used as measures of effectiveness (MOEs). However, since existing two-lane highways have both uninterrupted and interrupted traffic flow-system elements, a variety of free-flow speeds exhibits in two-lane highways. In addition, it is necessary to check if the linear-relationship between volumes and time-delayed rate is appropriate. Then, this study is to reestablish the relationship between average travel speed, time-delayed rate, and flow. METHODS : TWOPAS model was selected to conduct this study, and the free-flow speeds of passenger cars and the percentage of following vehicles observed in two-lane highways were applied to the model as the input. The revised relationships were developed from the computer simulation. RESULTS : In the revised average travel speed vs. flow relationship, the free-flow speed of 90km/h and 70km/h were added. It shows that the relationship between time delayed-rate and flow appeared to be appropriate with the log-function form and that there was no difference in time-delayed rate between the free flow speeds. In addition to revise the relationships, the speed prediction model and the time-delayed rate prediction model were also developed. CONCLUSIONS : The revised relationships between average travel speed, time-delayed rate, and flow would be useful in estimating the Level of Service(LOS) of a two-lane highway.

  • The purpose of this study was to discuss how college students who participated in a liberal dancesports class were to relieve stress and academic performance was affected. The participants was conducted on eight college students who took part in a liberal dancesports class. The data was collected via in-depth interviews and participant observation from $19^{th}$ April to $20^{th}$ August 2012. The interviews was flexible, lasting between one and two hours. The results are as follows: First, the students were motivated to take the classes because they were fun and joy, inspiration from the mass media, and the encouragement of fellow participants. Second, the students enjoyed dancing together in a spirited and energetic manner. Third, the students stated that major causes of stress were over gaining suitable employment, long distance commuting and tuition fees ets. While this study has provided positive conclusions, it is suggested that any future research in this field should target male and female students from a variety of geographical regions with a wide range of concerns and interests.

Recognition of Korean Text in Outdoor Signboard Images Using Directional Feature and Fisher Measure (방향성분 특징과 Fisher Measure를 이용한 간판영상 한글인식)

  • In this paper, we propose a Korean character recognition method from outboard signboard images. We have chosen 808 classes of Korean characters by an analysis of frequencies of appearance in a dictionary of signboard names. The proposed method mainly consists of three steps: feature extraction, rough classification, and coarse classification. The first step is to extract a nonlinear directional segments feature, which is immune to the distortion of character shapes. The second step computes an ordered set of 10 recognition candidates using a minimum distance classifier. The last step reorders the recognition candidates using a Fisher discriminant measure. As experimental results, the recognition accuracy is 80.45% for the first choice, and 93.51% for the top five choices.

  • Recently, the rapid development of information technology has brought enormous changes in education. Consolidation of communications and multimedia technologies are enabling the new educational paradigm such as distance learning and virtual education. Furthermore, many studies in the education engineering field report that teaching using multimedia technologies more enhances students' performance than the traditional instructor-teaching method. However, little research regarding the education using multimedia has been done in the MIS filed. None of multimedia-related studies could be found in the top-ranked MIS journals published in Korea for the last five years, and only a few studies were found even worldwide. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to investigate which features of multimedia software are most important to enhance the teaching results of students, From the previous research, we found out the specific features of the educational multimedia software which are considered to affect the students' performance, and defined the research variables related to those educational software features, And, based on the constructivism and motivation theory of the education engineering field, a theoretical research model and research hypotheses were developed. Perceived usefulness of the class and a student's perceived interests in the class were used as surrogate variables to measure teaching performance. Total 277 students participated separately in one of the two multimedia classes which have continued for three weeks. One was C programming language class and the other was multimedia CD-title development class. Each student listened for the multimedia session of the class using multimedia software and, at the end of the multimedia session, answered the survey questionnaire, The results of the study show that motivation to the class and the contents of education were statistically significant to the students' performance in the class. That implies, not only in the traditional instructor-teaching method but also in the multimedia class, that the contents of education itself and student's motivation to the class are most important to raise instructional results.

Analysis of Symptom Determinant of Cucumber mosaic virus RNA3 via Pseudorecombinant Virus in Zucchini Squash

  • Isolates of Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) collected in Korea, were compared with their pathological features in tobacco and zucchini squash. Full-length cDNA clone of RNA3 was generated by using long-distance RT-PCR. Transcript RNA3 from the cDNA clone was inoculated onto host plants with transcripts RNA1 and RNA2 of Fny strain, generating RNA3-pseudorecombinant CMV. Timing and severity of systemic symptom was not significantly different among the pseudorecombinant CMVs in tobacco, compared with strains Fny-CMV and Pf-CMV. However, the pseudorecombinant CMVs induced two different systemic symptoms (mosaic vs. chlorotic spot) in zucchini squash. Based on symptom induction, the pseudorecombinant CMVs were categorized into two classes. The severity and timing of symptoms were correlated with viral RNA accumulations in systemic leaves of zucchini squash, suggesting that different kinetics of virus movement associated with CMV proteins are crucial for systemic infection and symptom development in zucchini squash. The analysis of movement proteins (MP) of CMV strains showed high sequence homology, but the differences of several amino acids were found in the C-terminal region between Class-I-CMV and Class-II-CMV. The analysis of coat proteins (CP) showed that the CMV isolates tested belonged to CMV subgroup I and the viruses shared overall 87-99% sequence identity in their genomes. Phylogenetic analysis of MP and CP suggested that biological properties of Korean CMV isolates have relationships associated with host species.

  • We have been designed and constructed an artificial odour recognition system(electronic nose system) using metal oxide type sensor array for recognizing and analyzing various odours. We proposed an unsupervised clustering method based on Euclidean distances in order for human observer to examine easily multi-dimensional data, which has been measured from an array of sensors. This is a combination of Principal Components Analysis(PCA) used as a starting point for Sammom Mapping Method(SMM). No prior assumptions are made of the classes in which odour belong, and the error due to dimensional reduction at the PCA can be minimized without the disadvantages of rotation of clusters when the order of data sets in a data base was changed in the SMM. An artificial odour recognition system with the proposed unsupervised clustering method was applied to assessment of odour differences of Volatile Organic Compounds(VOCs) and Korean whiskies respectively, and demonstrated the best performances throughout the experimental trails.

Classification of Pollution Patterns in High School Classrooms using Disjoint Principal Component Analysis (분산주성분 분석을 이용한 고등학교교실 내 오염패턴분류에 관한 연구)

  • In regard to indoor air quality patterns, the government introduced various polices that were about managing and monitoring quality of indoor air as a major assignment, and also executed 'Indoor Air Quality Management Act' which was presented in the May, 2004. However, among the multi-usage facilities controlled by the Act, the school was not included yet. This study goal was to investigate PM 10 pollution patterns of the high school classrooms using a pattern recognition method based on cluster analysis and disjoint principal component analysis, and further to survey levels of inorganic elements in May, June, and September, 2004. A hierarchical clustering method was examined to obtain possible objects in pseudo homogeneous sample classes by transformation raw data and by applying various distance. Following the analysis, the disjoint principal component analysis was used to define homogeneous sample class after deleting outliers. Then three homogeneous Patterns were obtained as follows: the first class had been separated and objects in the class were considered to be sampled under semi-open condition. This class had high concentration of Ca, Fe, Mg, K, Al, and Na which are related with a soil and a chalk compounds. The second class was obtained in which objects were sampled while working air-conditioners and was identified low concentration of PM 10 and elements. Objects in the last class were assigned during rainy day. A chalk, soil element and various types of anthropogenic sources including combustions and industrial influenced the third class. This methodology was thought to be helpful enough to classify indoor air quality patterns and indoor environmental categories when controlling an indoor air quality.

A Suggestion for Adaptation of U-Learning in Inclusive Education (U-러닝시스템의 통합교육에의 적용을 위한 제언)

  • The environment of education has been undergoing dramatic developments in recent years with the development of information technology such as digital information transfer, storage and communication methods. Education and training technology is constantly evolving and growing. Because we continually meet the new and interesting advances in our world. The evolution in education and training at a distance can be characterized as a move from traditional learning to u-learning. This paper concerns with the application of u-based education methodology for people with disabilities targeting to empower them. Instead of the classic educational support such as extended time to take exams, a reader and/or scribe to assist with exams and note taking services. In this paper, we introduce the definition of inclusion and disabilities which does not been fully understood what they mean and then possible implementing materials which can empower the students with disabilities with accomplishments. We would like to point out that we concentrate on the aspects of instructional science particularly related with inclusive classes.

Spatial Distribution Pattern of the Populations of Camellia japonica in Busan (부산 사하구 동백나무 집단의 공간적 분포 양상)

  • The spatial distribution of geographical distances at five natural populations of Camellia japonica in Busan, Korea was studied. The four plots (Mollundae, Gadeok-do, Du-do, and Jwiseum) of C. japonica were uniformly distributed in the forest community and only one plot (Amnam-dong) was aggregately distributed in the forest community. Morisita index is related to the patchiness index showed that the plot $20m{\times}50m$ had an overly steep slope when the area was larger than $20m{\times}20m$, which indicated that the degree of aggregation increased significantly with increasing quadrat sizes, while the patchiness indices did not change from the plot $5m{\times}10m$ to $10m{\times}10m$. The spatial structure was quantified by Moran's I, a coefficient of spatial autocorrelation. Ten of the significant values (76.9%) were positive, indicating similarity among individuals in the first 4 distance classes (80 m), i.e., pairs of individuals with dissimilarity characteristics can separate by more than 100 m.

  • In this paper, we introduce two classes of optimal codes, [$2^k-1$, k, $2^{k-1}$] simplex codes and [$2^k-1+k$, k, $2^{k-1}+1$] codes, attaining Griesmer bound with equality. We further present and compare the locality of them. The [$2^k-1+k$, k, $2^{k-1}+1$] codes have good locality property as well as optimal code length with given code dimension and minimum distance. Therefore, we expect that [$2^k-1+k$, k, $2^{k-1}+1$] codes can be applied to various distributed storage systems.
