In the four swamps of Jjokjibeol, Mokpo, Upo and Sajipo in the Upo wetland, the nitrogen nutrients, phosphorus nutrients and chl-$\alpha$ had been observed during the period from April 2005 to December 2009 on monthly basis. Based on the results, the fluctuations of trophic state in the Upo wetland were estimated. Measurements of the nitrogen nutrients such as $NO_3$-N, $NH_3$-N and T-N showed to be generally decreased in comparison with those in the precent studies. Yet the T-N was still considerably higher than the general concentration level of eutrophication and algal blooming. $PO_4$-P and T-P showed to have reduced considerably in comparison to precedent studies. However, T-P also turned out to be dissolved over the nutrient standard. Nitrogen nutrients and phosphorus nutrients were the lowest in Jjokjibeol in the Upo wetland. The chl-$\alpha$ concentrations were the highest at summer periods in Jjokjibeol and Mokpo. However, the highest at non-summer periods in Upo and Sajipo. Among the four swamps, Upo had the highest density on average of chl-$\alpha$, and Mokpo the lowest. Through TRIX (Trophic Index) analysis evaluating trophic state of the Upo wetland, all four swamps were estimated of poor water quality (eutrophication).
The chemistry of porewater and exchangeable nutrients of sediment was determined to define potential influence of sediment nutrients on the water quality and the phytoplankton growth in Taechong Reservoir in March and May of 2000. The sediment-water interface showed almost anoxic state, < 0.5 mg $O_2/l$. Conductivity of the porewater was higher 1.9${\sim}$2.6 fold than that of sediment, and its variation was greater in the shallow water. Eh ranged from -12mV to -148 mV and bulk density from $1.17\;g/cm^3$ to $1.30\;g/cm^3$ and they did not differ among stations. The water content in the sediment ranged from 58% to 72% and organics from 8% to 13%, and they were higher toward the lower part of reservoir. Soil texture was in the order of sand>clay>silt and sandy sediment accounted for 97% of the total sediment. The total bacterial numbers and diatom abundance were high in the downstream of the reservoir. In porewater and exchangeable nutrients of sediment, nitrogen and phosphorus were mostly consist of the particulate form. Inorganic nitrogen was mostly composed of $NH_4$. Nitrogen of porewater was mostly an inorganic form while exchangeable nutrients were composed an organic form. However, phosphorus was composed of dissolved organic fraction in the porewater while inorganic fraction in the exchangeable nutrients. Silicon content of sediment was much exchangeable nutrients with 63%, and it was higher than in the porewater. In summary, the sediments of Taechong Reservoir were mostly composed of organics and assessed to be a eutrophic state.

In this work, 222Rn activity, major dissolved ions, and microbial community in ground- and surface waters were investigated to characterize groundwater inflow to the stream located in an urban area, Daejeon, Korea. The measured 222Rn activities in groundwater and stream water ranged from 136 to 231 Bq L-1 and 0.3 to 48.8 Bq L-1, respectively. The spatial distributions of 222Rn activity in the stream strongly suggested groundwater inflow to the stream. The change of geochemical composition of the stream water indicated the effect of groundwater discharge became more pronounced as the stream flows downstream. Furthermore, microbial community composition of the stream water had good similarity to that of groundwater, which is another evidence of groundwater discharge. Although groundwater inflow could not be estimated quantitatively in this study, the results can provide useful information to understand interactions between groundwater and surface water, and determine hydrological processes governing groundwater recharge and hydrogeological cycles of dissolved substances such as nutrients and trace metals.
The distributions of temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphate in the Yellow Sea are described from data collected in June and July, 1994. Based on the observations of water temperature and salinity, the fresh waters originated from the Changjiang River were found to affect the waters adjacent to Cheju Island. In the light of the distributions of dissolved oxygen and chemical oxygen demand, the western part of the Yellow Sea was worse in water quality than the eastern part. Based on data of nutrients, eutrophication indices of the western part were higher than those of the eastern part in summer. It is concluded that the western part of the Yellow Sea appeared to receive high pollution loads from rivers and was evaluated to have high potentiality of red tide occurrence.
Nutrient losses, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, in agricultural runoff can contaminate surface and ground water, leading to eutrophication. Thus, erosion control is crucial to minimizing nutrient losses from agricultural land. Assessments of various erosion control practices were carried out under various cropping system, soil management practices, and slope conditions by means of a lysimeter study and under artificial rainfall. Soil and nutrient losses were monitored in a small agricultural field to evaluate the soil conservation practices. Nutrient losses occur in runoff and leachate (dissolved nutrient) and in sediments (particulate nutrient). Dissolved nitrates accounted for the majority (about 90%) of nitrate transport within the soil. Particulate phosphate in sediments represented the majority (60% to 67%) of phosphate transport. Recently, engineering and agronomic erosion-control practices haver been used to reduce erosion problems in fields on slopes. These practices reduced soil loss, runoff, and nutrient loss to 1/6, 1/2,and 1/3 their original levels, respectively. Bioavailable particulate phosphate in sediments represents a variable but longterm source of phosphate for algae. Dissolved nitrate and phosphate are immediately available for algal uptake, so reducing fluxes of these nutrients should also reduce the risk of eutrophication.
We measured the salinity, pH, and concentrations of $^{222}Rn$ and nutrients in groundwater in the southeastern coastal aquifer off Busan from March to September 2005 to evaluate its submarine discharge and geochemical characteristics. Salinity in coastal groundwater increased sharply at 20 m depth and exceeded 25 ppt below 40 m during the study period, indicating that a strong transition zone between fresh groundwater and seawater developed between 20 and 40 m depths. Fresh groundwater in the upper layer of this transition zone was characterized by high pH, $^{222}Rn$, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) and low dissolved inorganic silicate (DSi) relative to seawater in the lower layer. In addition, the vertical profiles of the $^{222}Rn$, DIN, and DIP concentrations imply that a strong advective groundwater flow occurs along the interface of fresh groundwater and seawater near 20 m depth. The geochemical constituents in coastal groundwater also showed strong seasonal variation, with the highest concentrations in summer (June 2005) due to the changes of groundwater recharge and sea level. This implies that the input of terrestrial chemical species into the coastal ocean through submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) could change seasonally. To ascertain the seasonal variation of SGD and SGD-driven chemical species fluxes, and associated ecological responses in the coastal ocean, more extensive studies are necessary using various SGD tracers or seepage meters in the future.
Alakline phosphatase activity (AP A) as a phosphorus deficiency measurement in flowing waters and of microhabitats (rocks, wood, leaves, and sediments) was measured and its relationship to flux of nutrients and response to rainfall events were determined for two geologically different streams in west Alabama from August to November. Results indicated water column AP A in both streams had a low correlation with levels of orthophosphate, total organic phosphorus, nitrate, ammonia, dissolved organic carbon, and discharge (r=0.075-0.583; n=g-IU. Communities on rock surfaces showed a higher AP A level than those on wood and leaves. Sediment passed through a $106{\mu}m$ sieve showed 2-9 times higher AP A level than material passed through $425{\mu}m$ sieve. The first storm after drought at Yellow Creek introduced substantial quantities of DOC (2.5 times baseflow concentrations) and $N0_3-N$ (5.8 times baseflow concentrations) which did not affect AP A significantly. The second storm at Little Schultz Creek caused minor changes in nutrient cocentrations; however $N0_3-N$ levels and AP A were drastically lower due to the dilution effect. Retention of stream water AP A at Yellow Creek and Little Schultz Creek on $0.45{\mu}m$ filter (54 and 43%, respectively) and $0.22{\mu}m$ (83 and 77% of total APA. respectively) indicated more free dissolved portion of the enzyme was present at Little Schultz Creek. Little Schultz Creek (with carbonate and with a higher productivity and biomass) showed a consistantly greater AP A activity $(132{\pm}54\;{\mu}M{\cdot}1^{-1}{\cdot}min^{-I};\;n=g)$ than Yellow Creek $(41{\pm}23\;{\mu}M{\cdot}1^{-I}{\cdot}min^{-I}$, with a sandstone substrate; n=l1, $p{\leq}O.OO1)$. Overall, a greater APA on all microhabitats and the presence of more dissolved enzyme in Little Schultz Creek during the study period may indicates it is more P deficient than Yellow Creek.
To understand the effects of fluctuations in dam discharge due to river environments and phytoplankton communities, we monitored such environments and phytoplankton communities biweekly, from February 2001 to February 2002 and from February 2004 to February 2005, in the lower Han River (LHR), South Korea. The phytoplankton abundance during the dry season was approximately two times higher than that during the rainy season. In particular, fluctuations in diatom assemblages, which constituted over 70% of the total phytoplankton abundance, were affected severely by the changes in the discharge. When a large quantity of water in a dam was discharged into the LHR, the conductivity and the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) decreased rapidly, whereas the concentrations of suspended solids (SS), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and dissolved silica (DSi) increased immediately. Time-delayed relationship also revealed that the dam discharge had an immediately significant negative relationship with phytoplankton abundance. On the whole, fluctuations in phytoplankton communities in the LHR were influenced much more by hydrodynamics such as dam discharge than by the availability of nutrients. Thus, the variability in these concentrations usually parallels the strength of river flow that is associated with summer rainfall, with higher values during periods of high river discharge.
Water quality data of 81 lakes in Korea, 2013 ~ 2017 were analyzed. Most water quality parameters showed left-skewed distribution, while dissolved oxygen showed normal distribution. pH and dissolved oxygen showed a positive correlation with organic matter and nutrients, which appeared to be a nonsense correlation mediated by the algae. The ratio of $BOD_5$ and $COD_{Mn}$ to CBOD was 21 % and 52 % in the freshwater lakes, respectively. TOC concentration appeared to be underestimated by the UV digestion method, when salinity exceeds $700{\mu}S\;cm^{-1}$. In terms of nitrogen/phosphorus ratio, the limiting factor for algal growth seemed to be phosphorus in most of the lakes. Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ increased acutely with decrease of N/P ratio. However, it seemed to be a nonsense correlation mediated by phosphorus concentration, since the N/P ratio depended on phosphorus. The N/P ratio of brackish lakes was lower than that of the freshwater, at the same concentration of phosphorus. It is worth examining denitrification that occurs, in bottom layer and sediment, during saline stratification. $Chl.{\alpha}$ concentration decreased in the form of a power function with increase of mean depth. The primary reason is that deep lakes are mainly at the less-disturbed upstream. However, it is necessary to investigate the effect of sediment, on water quality in shallow lakes. Light attenuation in the upper layer, was dominated by tripton (non-algal suspended solids) absorption/scattering (average relative contribution of 39 %), followed by CDOM (colored dissolved organic matter) (average 37 %) and $Chl.{\alpha}$ (average 21 %).

In this study, we investigated the variations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in an agricultural reservoir during the monsoon period (June to October, 2020) with respect to the organic carbon concentration (DOC), molecular weight distribution, and optical properties. The monsoon period was divided into three phases - beginning storm (BS), during storm (DS), and after storm (AS). Our results showed significant differences in the concentrations and characteristics of DOM during the summer monsoon. The DOC concentrations were decreased after the monsoon, probably due to a dilution effect. In contrast, increasing trends were observed in the specific UV absorbance (SUVA), and relative abundances of humic-like fluorescence and larger-sized compounds. These observations implied that the large-sized and humic-like organic components with terrestrial origins strongly affected the reservoir DOM after the summer monsoon. Meanwhile, biopolymer size fraction, which is associated with algal activity, became more abundant after the monsoon. These results suggest that DOM with autochthonous sources became dominant as a result of the inflow of nutrients into the reservoir after the storm. Spatial changes in DOM within the reservoir were not pronounced as much as the temporal variations. All taken, it can be concluded that the summer monsoon simply led to the decrease of DOM concentrations while the sources and the quality of DOM underwent substantial changes, which may enrich refractory organic matter in the reservoir. This study reveals the importance of in-depth DOM quality monitoring before and after summer monsoon for effective water quality management in agricultural reservoirs.
