This study investigates the effects of moisture content on diffuse ultrasound to be applied for the evaluation of micro-structural damage in concrete subjected to various environmental conditions. We monitored diffuse wave parameters for concrete samples in process of water saturation for 5 days. Dried samples were immersed in a water bath, and the change of moisture content in concrete were estimated by measuring the change of mass. For the diffuse wave analysis, a frequency range of 500 kHz, which represents a scattering regime of ultrasound in concrete, was selected. The test results reveal that the ultrasonic diffusivity slightly changed, and the ultrasonic dissipation significantly increased by approximately 120% in the process of water saturation. Therefore, the moisture content in concrete should be considered for the evaluation of micro-structural damage using diffuse wave techniques.

Aluminum nitride (AlN) has excellent electrical insulation property, high thermal conductivity, and a low thermal expansion coefficient; therefore, it is widely used as a heat sink, heat-conductive filler, and heat dissipation substrate. However, it is well known that the AlN-based materials have disadvantages such as low sinterability and poor mechanical properties. In this study, the effects of addition of various amounts (1-6 wt.%) of sintering additives $Y_2O_3$ and $Sm_2O_3$ on the thermal and mechanical properties of AlN samples pressureless sintered at $1850^{\circ}C$ in an $N_2$ atmosphere for a holding time of 2 h are examined. All AlN samples exhibit relative densities of more than 97%. It showed that the higher thermal conductivity as the $Y_2O_3$ content increased than the $Sm_2O_3$ additive, whereas all AlN samples exhibited higher mechanical properties as $Sm_2O_3$ content increased. The formation of secondary phases by reaction of $Y_2O_3$, $Sm_2O_3$ with oxygen from AlN lattice influenced the thermal and mechanical properties of AlN samples due to the reaction of the oxygen contents in AlN lattice.
Dissipation, adsorption and desorption of oxadiazon were examined in two soils containing different amounts of soil organic matter. In addition, reactivity of oxadiazon with humic monomers was searched to clarify binding mechanism of oxadiazon to soil organic matter in the presence of a laccase of Myceliophthera thermophila. Half lives of oxadiazon were 38 days in Soil I and 45 days in Soil II. Freundlich constant, k values of fresh soils were higher than those of oxidized soils. Adsorption rates of oxadiazon were increased 17.1% in Soil I and 9.3% in Soil II in the presence of a laccase but no significant increase was observed in oxidized soils. Desorption rates of oxadiazon in fresh soils were lower than those in oxidized soils. Desorption rates of adsorbed oxadiazon in soils addes with the enzyme were not changed in oxidized soils but decreased in fresh soils. The herbicide oxadiazon alone underwent no transformation by a laccase but in the presence of catechol, guaiacol and gallic acid as humic monomer, transformation rates of it were from 20% to 24%.
The test results from three one fourth scale models using high strength Reinforced Concrete $f_x=704\;kg/cm^2,\;f_y=5.830\;kg/cm^2$ are presented. Such specimens are considered to represent the critical 3 storics of 60-story tall building of a structural wall system in area of high seismicity respectively. They are tested under inplane vertical and horizontal loading. The main varlable is the level of axial stress. The amounts of vertical and horizontal reinforcement are identical for the three walls testcd. The cross-section of all walls is barbell shape. The aspectratio($h_w/I_w$) of test specimen is 1.8. The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of levels of applied axial stresses on the inelastic behavior of high-strength R /C tall walls. Experimental results of high strength R /C tall walls subjected to axial load and simulated sels rnic loading show that it is possible to insure a ductlle dominant performance by promotmg flex ural yielding of vertical reinforcement and that axial stresses within $O.21f_x$ causes an increase in horizontal load-carrying capacity, initial secant st~ffness characteristics, but an decrease in displacement ductility. energy dissipation index and work damage index of high strength K /C tall walls
We investigated the effects of immobilization chemistry on the yield of immobilization and the bioactivity of the immobilized enzymes. Trypsin as a model protein and macroporous polymer beads(Toyopearl AF 650M, Tosho Co., Japan) was used as a model matrix. Four methods were used to immobilize trypsin; covalent conjugation by reductive amination(at pH 10.0 and pH 4.0) and affinity interaction via streptavidin-biotin, and double-affinity interaction via biotin-streptavidin-biotin system. The covalent conjugation immobilized $3{\sim}4$ mg/ml-gel, ca. 3-fold higher than the affinity method. However, the specific activity of the covalently(pH 10.0) and affinity-immobilized trypsin(via streptavidin-biotin) are ca. 37% and 50%, respectively, of that of the soluble enzyme(on the low-molecular-weight BAPNA substrate). When the molecular size of a substrate increased, the affinity-immobilized trypsin showed higher clavage activity on insulin and BSA. This result seemed to indicate the streptavidin-biotin system allowed more steric flexibility of the immobilized trypsin in its interaction with a substrate molecule. To confirm this, we studied the molecular flexibility of immobilized trypsin using quartz crystal microbalance-dissipation. Self-assembled monolayers were formed on the Q-sensor surface by aminoalkanethiols, and gultaraldehyde was attached to the SAMs. Trypsin was immobilized in two ways: reductive amination(at pH 10.0) and the streptavidin-biotin system. The dissipation shift of the affinity-immobilized trypsin was $0.8{\times}10^{-6}$, whereas that of the covalently attached enzyme was almost zero. This result confirmed that the streptavidin-biotin system allowed higher molecular flexibility. These results suggested that the bioactivity of the immobilized enzyme be strongly dependent on its molecular flexibility.
$CdS_{0.67}Se_{0.33}$ single crystal was grown by vertical sublimation method of closed tube physical vapour deposition. The (0001) growth plane of oriented single crystals was confirmed from the back-ref1ection Laue patterns. From the Hall effects by van der Pauw method, the as-grown $CdS_{0.67}Se_{0.33}$ single crystals were found to be n-type semiconductors. The mobility appeared to be decreased by lattice scattering at temperature range from 150K to 293K and by impurity scattering at temperatures ranging from 30K to 150K In order to explore its applicability in photoconductive cells, we measured the ratio of photo-current to dark-current (pc/dc), maximum allowable power dissipation (MAPD), spectral response and response time respectively. The results indicated that for the samples annealed in Cu vapour the photoconductive characteristics are best. We obtained sensitivity of 0.99, the value of pc/de of $1.84{\times}10^{7}$, the MAPD of 323mW and the rise and decay time of 9.3 ms and 9.7 ms, respectively.
The effect of sub-grid turbulence and combustion models on the mean flame height in a heptane pool fire according to the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) version (5 and 6) based on Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was examined. The heat release rate for the fire simulation was provided through experiments performed under identical conditions and the predictive performance of the mean flame height according to FDS version was evaluated by a comparison with the existing correlation. As a result, the Smagorinsky and Deardorff turbulence models applied to FDS 5 and 6, respectively, had no significant effects on the mean flow field, flame shape and flame height. On the other hand, the difference in pool fire characteristics including the mean flame height was due mainly to the difference in the mixture fraction and Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) combustion models applied to FDS 5 and 6, respectively. Finally, compared to FDS 6, FDS 5 provided the predictive result of a significantly longer flame height and more consistent mean flame height than the existing correlation.

Under the leadership of the National Institute of Meteorological Sciences (NIMS), the first domestic autonomous flight-type weather modification experimental drone for fog and lower-level cloud seeding was developed in 2021. This drone is designed based on a multi-copter configuration with a maximum takeoff weight of approximately 25 kg, enabling the installation of up to four burning flares for seeding materials and facilitating weather observations (temperature, pressure, humidity, and wind) as well as aerosol (PM10, PM2.5, and PM1.0) particle measurements. This research aims to introduce the construction of the drone and its recent applications over the past two years, providing insights into the experimental procedures, effectiveness verification, and improvement directions of the weather modification drone-based rain enhancement. In particular, partial confirmation of the experimental effects was obtained through the fog dissipation experiment on December 10, 2021, and the lower-level cloud seeding case study on October 5, 2022. To enhance the scope and rainfall amount of weather modification experiments using drones, various technological approaches, including adjustments to experimental altitude, seeding lines, seeding amount, and verification methods are necessary. Through this research, we aim to propose the development direction for weather modification drone technology, which will serve as foundational technology for practical application of domestic rain enhancement technology.
BACKGROUND: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are one of the most common environmental contaminants. Because of their recalcitrant properties and long-term toxicity, numerous studies have been performed. The toxicological concerns are focused on endocrinological effects of animal. Several different metabolites have been reported, including hydroxy PCBs, PCB quinones, and methylsulfonyl PCBs from animal tissues. However, details in plants have never been studied. It is well-known that plants can produce phytoalexin in response to chemical, physical, or pathological stress.METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, the several PCBs and hydroxy derivatives were prepared by chemical syntheses. Their effects on secondary metabolite biosynthesis were determined in carrot roots. The levels of 6-methoxymellein were determined in several different treatments, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In general, the concentration of 6-methoxymellein reached a maximum at 2 days and gradually decreased to trace level at 5 days in control experiments. However, the effects of PCBs or hydroxy derivatives were highly dependent on compounds. For example, the maximum concentrations of 6-methoxymellein were observed at 3 days for 2-hydroxy/4-hydroxybiphenyl, while 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl and 3,5-dichloro-2-hydroxybiphenyl showed a rapid accumulation within 1 day, followed by rapid dissipation to undetectable levels.CONCLUSION: Biphenyl derivatives were effective elicitor of 6-methoxymellein accumulation. In general, hydroxybiphenyls (phenols) more efficiently induced phytoalexin biosynthesis than those without hydroxy groups. It can be concluded that PCBs or their possible metabolites could change the plant secondary metabolism.
We construct several Milky Way-like galaxy models containing a gas halo (as well as gaseous and stellar disks, a dark matter halo, and a stellar bulge) following either an isothermal or an NFW density profile with varying mass and initial spin. In addition, galactic winds associated with star formation are tested in some of the simulations. We evolve these isolated galaxy models using the GADGET-3 N-body/hydrodynamic simulation code, paying particular attention to the effects of the gaseous halo on the evolution. We find that the evolution of the models is strongly affected by the adopted gas halo component, particularly in the gas dissipation and the star formation activity in the disk. The model without a gas halo shows an increasing star formation rate (SFR) at the beginning of the simulation for some hundreds of millions of years and then a continuously decreasing rate to the end of the run at 3 Gyr. Whereas the SFRs in the models with a gas halo, depending on the density profile and the total mass of the gas halo, emerge to be either relatively flat throughout the simulations or increasing until the middle of the run (over a gigayear) and then decreasing to the end. The models with the more centrally concentrated NFW gas halo show overall higher SFRs than those with the isothermal gas halo of the equal mass. The gas accretion from the halo onto the disk also occurs more in the models with the NFW gas halo, however, this is shown to take place mostly in the inner part of the disk and not to contribute significantly to the star formation unless the gas halo has very high density at the central part. The rotation of a gas halo is found to make SFR lower in the model. The SFRs in the runs including galactic winds are found to be lower than those in the same runs but without winds. We conclude that the effects of a hot gaseous halo on the evolution of galaxies are generally too significant to be simply ignored. We also expect that more hydrodynamical processes in galaxies could be understood through numerical simulations employing both gas disk and gas halo components.
