  • In the present paper, we have considered a layered medium of two semi-infinite nonlocal elastic solids with intermediate transversely isotropic magnetothermoelastic solid. The intermediate slab is of uniform thickness with the effects of two temperature, rotation and Hall current and with and without energy dissipation. A plane longitudinal or transverse wave propagating through one of the nonlocal elastic solid half spaces, is made incident upon transversely isotropic slab and it results into various reflected and refracted waves. The amplitude ratios of various reflected and refracted waves are obtained by using appropriate boundary conditions. The effect of nonlocal parameter on the variation of various amplitude ratios with angle of incidence are depicted graphically. Some cases of interest are also deduced.

  • Inverter driven induction motors with high speed switching and advanced PWM techniques are widely used for variable speed applications. Recently, the insulation failures of stator winding have attracted much concern due to high dv/dt of IGBT PWM inverter output. In this paper, the detailed insulation test results of 26 low-voltage induction motors are presented. Six different types of insulation techniques are applied to 26 motors. The insulation characteristics are analyzed with partial discharge, inception voltage, AC current, and dissipation factor tests. Also, breakdown tests by high voltage pulses are performed. From the above test data the effects due to different wires and insulation techniques on the insulation characteristics of low-voltage induction motors are compared and analyzed. The insulation technique to enhance the insulation strength is suggested from the test results.

  • This research provides machine designers with some intuition to consider both, magnetic and heat transfer effects. A topological multi-objective function includes magnetic energy and heat inflow rate to the system, which equals to the total heat dissipation by conduction and convection. For the thermal field regarding the heat inflow, introduced as a reaction force, topology design sensitivity is derived by employing discrete equations. The adjoint variable method is used to avoid numerous sensitivity evaluations. As a numerical example, a C-core design excited by winding current demonstrates the strength of the multi-physical approach.

  • The treeing inhibitors of barbituric acid derivatives and azocompounds effects on the electrical properties of crosslinked low density polyethylene were investigated. The electrical treeing parameters for tree inception voltage, AC breakdown strength. volume resistivity, capacitance and dissipation factor at 1Mz and thermoluminescence measurements were discussed. From the results, 4- (4-nitrophenylazo) resorcinol among the treeing inhibitors was shown good insulation characteristics.

  • A kinematically admissible velocity field for the numerical analysis of closed-die forging process of spur gear is proposed. The velocity field is divided into three regions of deformation. In the analysis, the involute curve is approximated to be straight line and the upper-bound method is used to calculate energy dissipation rate. A constant frictional frictional factor has been assumed on the contacting surfaces. The effects of root diameter, number of teeth, and friction factor are determined on the relative forging pressure. The frictionless relative pressure is independent of root diameter for the same number of teeth, but increases with the number of teeth on a given root diameter. In the presence of friction, the relative forging presure increasing root diameter at the start of forging, but decreases with increasing root diameter in the processing of forging.

  • This experimental study investigates the hysterestic behavior of traditional timber frames subjected to lateral loads. Prototype frames for this study were selected from one of typical national treasures for timber structures in Korea. For simplicity roof structures and braket systems were excluded from specimens and the joint behavior of beam-to-column system were presumed to have crucial effect on their global behavior. The experimental observation showed stiffness degradation and slip after experiencing initial yield and the first cycle at a new larger displacement due to inherent gaps in traditional timber connection and gradual indentation of interfaces, The cyclic behaviors of all specimens were similar to those os modern timber frames with bolt and nail connections. Additional structural members such as an upper beam and clay-filled wall increased the initial stiffness strength and energy dissipation. It is expected that collapse of Korean traditional timber frames under lateral load is mainly caused from P-$\Delta$ effects rather than local member failure.

  • This paper discusses the error propagation characteristics of the Newmark explicit method, modified Newmark explicit method and ${\alpha}$-function dissipative explicit method in pseudodynamic tests. The Newmark explicit method is non-dissipative while the ${\alpha}$-function dissipative explicit method and the modified Newmark explicit method are dissipative and can eliminate the spurious participation of high frequency responses. In addition, error propagation analysis shows that the modified Newmark explicit method and the ${\alpha}$-function dissipative explicit method possess much better error propagation properties when compared to the Newmark explicit method. The major disadvantages of the modified Newmark explicit method are the positive lower stability limit and undesired numerical dissipation. Thus, the ${\alpha}$-function dissipative explicit method might be the most appropriate explicit pseudodynamic algorithm.

  • Recent trends in the electronic equipment indicate that the power consumption and heat generation in a chip increase as the components are miniaturized and the computing speed becomes faster. Suitable heat dissipation is required to ensure the guaranteed performance and reliable operation of the electronic devices. The aim of the present study is to investigate the forced-convective thermal-hydraulic characteristics of a pin-fin heat exchanger as a candidate for cooling system of the electronic devices. The influence of the structure of the pin-fin assembly on heat transfer is investigated by porous medium model. The results are compared with the experimental data or correlations of several researchers for the heat transfer coefficients for the channel flow with pin-fin arrays. Finally, the effects of design parameters such as the pin-fin diameter and the spacing are examined.

  • The present investigation has focus on the study of deformation due to thermomechanical sources in a thick circular plate. The thick circular plate is homogeneous, transversely isotropic with two temperatures and without energy dissipation. The upper and lower surfaces of the thick circular plate are traction free. The Laplace and Hankel transform has been used for finding the general solution to the field equations. The analytical expressions of stresses, conductive temperature and displacement components are computed in the transformed domain. However, the resulting quantities are obtained in the physical domain by using numerical inversion technique. Numerically simulated results are illustrated graphically. The effects of two temperatures by considering different values of temperature parameters are shown on the various components. Some particular cases are also figured out from the present investigation.

  • Carbon nanotube field-effect transistors (CNTFETs) have been widely studied as a promising technology to be included in post-complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor integrated circuits. Despite significant advantages in terms of delay and power dissipation, the fabrication process for CNTFETs is plagued by fault occurrences. Therefore, developing a fast and accurate method for estimating the reliability of CNTFET-based digital circuits was the main goal of this study. In the proposed method, effects related to faults that occur in a gate's transistors are first represented as a probability transfer matrix. Next, the target circuit's graph is traversed in topological order and the reliabilities of the circuit's gates are computed. The accuracy of this method (less than 3% reliability estimation error) was verified through various simulations on the ISCAS 85 benchmark circuits. The proposed method outperforms previous methods in terms of both accuracy and computational complexity.
