  • This study explores the phoneme distribution and syllable structure of entry words in the CMU English Pronouncing Dictionary to provide phoneticians and linguists with fundamental phonetic data on English word components. Entry words in the dictionary file were syllabified using an R script and examined to obtain the following results: First, English words preferred consonants to vowels in their word components. In addition, monophthongs occurred much more frequently than diphthongs. When all consonants were categorized by manner and place, the distribution indicated the frequency order of stops, fricatives, and nasals according to manner and that of alveolars, bilabials and velars according to place. These results were comparable to the results obtained from the Buckeye Corpus (Yang, 2012). Second, from the analysis of syllable structure, two-syllable words were most favored, followed by three- and one-syllable words. Of the words in the dictionary, 92.7% consisted of one, two or three syllables. This result may be related to human memory or decoding time. Third, the English words tended to exhibit discord between onset and coda consonants and between adjacent vowels. Dissimilarity between the last onset and the first coda was found in 93.3% of the syllables, while 91.6% of the adjacent vowels were different. From the results above, the author concludes that an analysis of the phonetic symbols in a dictionary may lead to a deeper understanding of English word structures and components.

  • Object detection process which makes decision on the existence of meaningful objects in a given image is a crucial part of image recognition in computer vision system. Hausdorff distance metric has been used in object detection and shows good results in applications such as face recognition. It defines the dissimilarity between two sets of points and is used to find the object that is most similar to the given model. This paper proposes a Hausdorff distance based detection method that uses directional information of points to improve detection accuracy when the sets of points are derived from edge extraction as is in usual cases. In this method, elastic energy needed to make two directional points coincident is used as a measure of similarity.

  • Spatial autocorrelation was applied to microgeographic variations of Sasa borealis populations in Korea. Separate counts of each type of join (combination of genotypes at a single locus) for each allele, and for each distance class of separation, were tested for significant deviation from random expectations by calculating the Standard Normal Deviation. Moran's I was significantly different from the expected value in 25 of 150 cases $(16.7\%)$. Seven of these values $(4.7\%)$ were negative, indicating genetic dissimilarity among pairs of individuals in the ten distance classes. Populations of S. borealis are small in Korea, and are distributed with occasional cutting of seed-bearing stems used for sieves. Thus, artificial disturbance may contribute to the fact that the S. borealis population of Jirisan is unusual in lacking spatial genetic structure.

  • Tje dispersion and adaptation of the recently immograted plant, prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola), were studied. The distribution of prickly lettuce was limited to south of the central districts of the Korean peninsula. The distrbution range is being diffused contimnuously by manual transportation. The 10 selected sites showed typical road side vegetation of an early successional stage; tje quadrats had 90% herbaceous cover, 5% shrub cover, and no tree cover. Dominant species were Kummerowia stipulacea, Ixeris chinensis, Ambrosia artemisiifolia, Lactuca indica, Toungia sonchifolia, Cephalonoplos segetum, Rubus parvifolius, Izeris polycdphala, Hemistepta lyrata, Cercis chinensis Artemisia capillaris. The investigated sites were divided into 4 patterns based on vegetation with high dissimilarity. The presence of mant patterns, despite high livels of differences, indicated that the characteristic prickly lettuce communities were not yet formed.

  • The effects of variability of the mechanical properties of lead rubber bearings on the response of a seismic isolation system are investigated. Material variability in manufacturing, aging, and operation temperature is assumed, and two variation models of an isolation system are considered. To evaluate the effect of ground motion characteristics on the response, 27 earthquake record sets with different peak A/V ratios were selected, and three components of ground motions were used for a seismic response analysis. The response in an isolation system and a superstructure increases significantly for ground motions with low A/V ratios. The variation in the mechanical properties of isolators results in a significant influence on the shear strains of the isolators and the acceleration response of the superstructure. The variation provisions in the ASCE-4 are reasonable, but more strict variation limits should be given to isolation systems subjected to ground motions having low A/V ratios. For application of seismic isolation systems to safety-related nuclear structures, the variation in the material and mechanical properties of the isolation system should be properly controlled during the manufacturing and aging processes. In addition, special consideration should be given to minimize the accidental torsion caused by the dissimilarity in the stiffness variations of the isolators.

  • This paper aims to propose a framework of content creating group with creativity under new convergence environments. The framework is built based on content concept hierarchy(deep/surface) relating with the creativity of group members. The diversity of group members(potential creativity) decrease and change into creative abilities in one unified view at each content concept hierarchy in time. To do this, three methods of building a creative group(interaction-base, direction-base, hybrid) are proposed. Cooperating processes and operators are designed to promote creative abilities in the content producing group. These cooperations are considering new media convergence industry's job road map(IPTV) and fundamental content attributes(semantic, narrative, discourse). In the framework, creative content is produced with the help of member's cultural openness, media richness and synchronicity, hierachical adaptability on dissimilarity. Deep level creativity of cognitive semiotics on moving image content is composed of psychological, transformational, situational creating abilities in the structure of group members. Designing analogy, metaphor, symbol operators help members to traverse deep structure of content concept hierarchy. Our framework has strong points to relate fundamental content deep structure with structure of content producing group and to induce creativity on cognitive structure of human being.

  • Generally, component and FR-4 board are connected by solder joint. Because material properties of components and FR-4 board are different, component and FR-4 board show different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) and thus strains in component and board are different when they are heated. That is, the differences in CTE of component and FR-4 board cause the dissimilarity in shear strain and solder joint' failure. The first order Taylor series expansion of the limit state function incorporating with Tresca failure criterion is used in order to estimate the failure probability of solder joints under heated condition. Using shear stresses and shear strains appeared on the solder joint, we estimate the failure probability of solder joints with the Tresca failure criterion. The effects of random variables such as CTE, distance of the solder joint from the neutral point(DNP), temperature variation and height of solder on the failure probability of the solder joint are systematically studied by using the failure probability model with first order reliability method(FORM).

  • RAPD analysis was performed to discuss the taxonomic status and phylogenetic relationships among the tribe Forsythieae and related groups. Two hundred and eighteen scorable polymorphic bands were detected from fourteen oligonucleotide primers. From the results of RAPD analysis by Nei and Li's genetic distance, each individuals of Abeliophyllum distichum showed high genetic relationships with ranging from 0.085 to 0.301, also the genus Forsythia showed from 0.042 to 0.655 among the species and populations. But, Abeliophyllum and Forsythia showed distinct dissimilarity, ranging from 0.610 to 1.258. And genetic differences among the population of Forsythia were 0.042 in F. koreana, 0.275 in F. saxatilis, 0.275 in F. ovata, 0.279 in F. nakaii, and 0.249 in F. viridissima. The UPGMA phenogram of tribe Forsythieae based on the results of RAPD analysis were presented that Abeliophyllum is distinct genus different from Forsythia. NJ tree which applied as the outgroups Fontanesia and Jasminum was derived, and it showed that tribe Forsythieae might be a monophyletic group. The genus Fontanesia was showed as sister group of tribe Forsythieae. Among the populations of taxa in Forsythia, F. koreana and F. saxatilis were more closely related, and F. ovata and F. nakaii were very closely related to F.japonica. And Fontanesia was the sister group of tribe Forsythieae.
