Taguchi method-optimized roll nanoimprinted polarizer integration in high-brightness display

  • We present the high-brightness large-area 10.1" in-cell polarizer display panel integrated with a wire grid polarizer (WGP) and metal reflector, from the initial design to final system development in a commercially feasible level. We have modeled and developed the WGP architecture integrated with the metal reflector in a single in-cell layer, to achieve excellent polarization efficiency as well as brightness enhancement through the light recycling effect. After the optimization of key experimental parameters via Taguchi method, the roll nanoimprint lithography employing a flexible large-area tiled mold has been utilized to create the 90 nm-pitch polymer resist pattern with the 54.1 nm linewidth and 5.1 nm residual layer thickness. The 90 nm-pitch Al gratings with the 51.4 nm linewidth and 2150 Å height have been successfully fabricated after subsequent etch process, providing the in-cell WGPs with high optical performance in the entire visible light regime. Finally we have integrated the WGP in a commercial 10.1" display device and demonstrated its actual operation, exhibiting 1.24 times enhancement of brightness compared to a conventional film polarizer-based one, with the contrast ratio of 1,004:1. Polarization efficiency and transmittance of the developed WGPs in an in-cell polarizer panel achieve 99.995 % and 42.3 %, respectively.

  • The orientational and dynamic behavior of liquid crystal molecules on the alignment layer surfaces of liquid crystal display (LCD) devices is crucial to their performance, but there are only a few methods of experimentally elucidating the interactions between the liquid crystals and the alignment layers. Inspired by the natural and technical similarities between membrane proteins in lipid bilayers and liquid crystals in LCDs, we employed solid-state NMR methodologies originally developed for the study of membrane proteins in lipid bilayers for the in-situ analysis of liquid crystal display panels.   • 평판 디스플레이(plate panel display)가 휴대용으로 발전하면서 박막화, 고색재현성, 고휘도에 관한 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있으며, 광원으로써 LED, OLED가 주로 이용되고 있다. 이러한 광원의 소재로 양자점에 관한 연구가 많이 이루어 지고 있는데, 양자점은 고색재현성과 유연디스플레이 구현에 있어서 주목받는 차세대 반도체 나노형광체 이다. 본 연구에서는 평판 디스플레이를 구현함에 있어서 양자점을 이용하는 방법에 관하여 제시하였다. CdSe/ZnS 양자점을 PET베리어 필름에 $100{\mu}m$ 두께로 도포하고 455nm의 파장을 갖는 청색 LED를 광원으로하여 빛을 조사하는 디바이스를 제작하고 광특성을 평가하였으며, LCD의 색변환 필름으로써 양자점의 적용 가능성을 제시하였다.

  • 디스플레이산업은 세계 최고의 수준을 달성한 한국의 대표적 주력 산업이다. LCD 패널의 대표기업들을 중심으로 한 기존의 연구와는 달리, 본 연구는 가치사슬 관점과 아키텍처 관점을 결합하여 후방가치사슬(upstream) 영역에 속한 소재부품 장비 공급기업에 중점을 둔 산업의 발달구조와 발전추이 특성을 분석하였다. 2002년부터 2015년까지 208개 기업에 대한 매출액 및 연구개발비 자료를 활용하여, 산업의 가치사슬별 성장 및 혁신 특성을 분석하였다. 결과, 소재부품기업과 장비기업은 패널 제조 공정별로 상반된 발전 추이가 있음을 규명하였다. 본 연구는 디스플레이산업과 같이 대규모 시스템 공정산업의 경우는 공정산업의 특성을 반영하여 기존의 가치사슬 관점에 아키텍처 혁신 관점을 반영한 분석 틀을 통하여 향후 산업 기술 전략과 정책의 방향을 제시하였다는 점에 의의가 있다.

  • Eye Glass Display (EGD) with microdisplay to realize the virtual display can make the large screen, so virtual image has been developed by using microdisplay panel. This paper shows study of low cost lens design and simulation for microdisplay system with 0.6"LCoS panel. Lens design optimized consider to spherical aberration, astigmatism, distortion, and chromatic aberration. Code V is used and it designed an aspheric lens about exit pupil 6mm, eye relief 20mm and 35 degree of field of view (FOV). With the application this aspheric lens to liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) type's microdisplay, virtual image showed 50 inch at 2m. One side of the aspheric lens was constituted from diffractive optical element (DOE) for the improvement in a performance. It had less than 2.5% of distortion value and modulation transfer function in axial had 20% of resolution with 32 lp/mm spatial frequency. The optical system is suitable for display of 15.6 mm-diagonal with SVGA.

White OLED and Dual-plate OLED Display

  • We report single and two-stacked WOLED. Two-stacked WOLED structure adopts fluorescent blue EML and phosphorescent (red+green) EML. Current efficiency, EQE and color coordinate of two-stacked WOLED are 54.5cd/A, 28.8% and CIExy (0.322, 0.345), respectively. Those of single WOLED are also 20cd/A, 10% and CIExy (0.29, 0.37), respectively. Dual-plate OLED Display (DOD) employing the single WOLED shows high aperture ratio up to 67% in 2-inch panel of which pixel size is equivalent to that of 32 inch Full HD.
