In recent researches, several LOD techniques are used for real-time visualization of large sized terrain data. However, during mesh simplification, geometry popping may occur in consecutive frames, because of the geometric error. We propose an efficient method for reducing the geometry popping using roughness map and bias map. A roughness map and a bias map are used to move vertices of the terrain mesh to appropriate position where they minimize the geometry errors. A roughness map and a bias map are represented as a texture suitable for GPU processing. Moving vertices using bias map is processed on the GPU, so the high-speed visualization can be possible.

Recently, a high speed spindle is an essential part of machine tools to satisfy latest demand of high precision product and machining of hard materials. But, there are many disadvantages such as heat generation of built-in-motor, bearing friction, noise, vibration and displacement because of the high speed. Many researches on spindle systems have been conducted for solving these problems. In this study, technical trend of machine tools spindle systems are analyzed with patent PSM, mapping and grouping. The analysis is carried out for the applied patent during January 2000 and December 2009 in Korea, Japan, EU and U.S.A. And development of the direction, strategy and promising technologies of the spindle system are suggested.
In this paper an energy method is presented for the linear buckling analysis of first order shear deformable plates. The displacement fields are defined in terms of the shape functions, which correspond to a set of predefined points and are composed of significantly high order polynomials. The locations of these points are found by mapping the geometry using the naturalized coordinates and bilinear shape functions. In order to evaluate the method, fully clamped and simply supported rectangular plates subjected to uniform uniaxial compressive loading on two opposite edges of the plate are investigated thoroughly and the results are compared with the exact solution given in the monograph of Timoshenko and Gere (1961). The method is extended to the analysis of perforated plates, wherein the negative stiffness computed over the opening area from in-plane and out-of-plane deformation modes is superimposed to the stiffness of the full plate. Numerical results are then favorably compared with those obtained by finite element methods. Other cases such as; rectangular plates with eccentrically located openings of different shapes are studied and reported in this paper with regards to the effect of aspect ratio, hole size, and hole position on the buckling. For a square plate with a large circular opening at the center, diameter being 80 percent of the length, the present method yields buckling coefficient 12.5 percent higher than the one from the FEM.
This paper provides a new technique for solving the static analysis of arbitrarily shaped composite plates by using Strong Formulation Finite Element Method (SFEM). Several papers in literature by the authors have presented the proposed technique as an extension of the classic Generalized Differential Quadrature (GDQ) procedure. The present methodology joins the high accuracy of the strong formulation with the versatility of the well-known Finite Element Method (FEM). The continuity conditions among the elements is carried out by the compatibility or continuity conditions. The mapping technique is used to transform both the governing differential equations and the compatibility conditions between two adjacent sub-domains into the regular master element in the computational space. The numerical implementation of the global algebraic system obtained by the technique at issue is easy and straightforward. The main novelty of this paper is the application of the stress and strain recovery once the displacement parameters are evaluated. Computer investigations concerning a large number of composite plates have been carried out. SFEM results are compared with those presented in literature and a perfect agreement is observed.
This paper presents a set of methods to evaluate the image quality of smartphone cameras as compared with that of a DSLR camera. In recent years, smartphone cameras have been used broadly for many purposes. As the performance of smartphone cameras has been enhanced considerably, they can be considered to be used for precise mapping instead of metric cameras. To evaluate the possibility, we tested the quality of one DSLR camera and 3 smartphone cameras. In the first step, we compare the amount of lens distortions inherent in each camera using camera calibration sheet images. Then, we acquired target sheet images, extracted reference lines from them and evaluated the geometric quality of smartphone cameras based on the amount of errors occurring in fitting a straight line to observed points. In addition, we present a method to evaluate the radiometric quality of the images taken by each camera based on planar fitting errors. Also, we propose a method to quantify the geometric quality of the selected camera using edge displacements observed in target sheet images. The experimental results show that the geometric and radiometric qualities of smartphone cameras are comparable to those of a DSLR camera except lens distortion parameters.
Over the last few years, autonomous vehicles have progressed very rapidly. The odometry technique that estimates displacement from consecutive sensor inputs is an essential technique for autonomous driving. In this article, we propose a fast, robust, and accurate odometry technique. The proposed technique is light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based direct odometry, which uses a spherical range image (SRI) that projects a three-dimensional point cloud onto a two-dimensional spherical image plane. Direct odometry is developed in a vision-based method, and a fast execution speed can be expected. However, applying LiDAR data is difficult because of the sparsity. To solve this problem, we propose an SRI generation method and mathematical analysis, two key point sampling methods using SRI to increase precision and robustness, and a fast optimization method. The proposed technique was tested with the KITTI dataset and real environments. Evaluation results yielded a translation error of 0.69%, a rotation error of 0.0031°/m in the KITTI training dataset, and an execution time of 17 ms. The results demonstrated high precision comparable with state-of-the-art and remarkably higher speed than conventional techniques.

In this study, the Kernel integration scheme for 2D linear elastic direct boundary element method has been discussed on the basis of subparametric element. Usually, the isoparametric based boundary element uses same polynomial order in the both basis function and mapping function. On the other hand, the order of mapping function is lower than the order of basis function to define displacement field when the subparametric concept is used. While the logarithmic numerical integration is generally used to calculate Kernel integration as well as Cauchy principal value approach, new formulation has been derived to improve the accuracy of numerical solution by algebraic modification. The subparametric based direct boundary element has been applied to 2D elliptical partial differential equation, especially for plane stress/strain problems, to demonstrate whether the proposed algebraic expression for integration of singular Kernel function is robust and accurate. The problems including cantilever beam and square plate with a cutout have been tested since those are typical examples of simple connected and multi connected region cases. It is noted that the number of DOFs has been drastically reduced to keep same degree of accuracy in comparison with the conventional isoparametric based BEM. It is expected that the subparametric based BEM associated with singular Kernel function integration scheme may be extended to not only subparametric high order boundary element but also subparametric high order dual boundary element.
The cut-slope of a large-sectional tunnel portal is recognized as a potential area of weakness due to unstable stress distribution and possible permanent displacement. This paper presents a case study of a slope failure and remediation for a large-scale cut-slope at a tunnel portal. Extensive rock-slope brittle failure occurred along discontinuities in the rock mass after 46 mm of rainfall, which caused instability of the upper part of the cut-slope. Based on a geological survey and face mapping, the reason for failure is believed to be the presence of thin clay fill in discontinuities in the weathered rock mass and consequent saturationinduced joint weakening. The granite-gneiss rock mass has a high content of alkali-feldspar, indicating a vulnerability to weathering. Immediately before the slope failure, a sharp increase in displacement rate was indicated by settlement-time histories, and this observation can contribute to the safety management criteria for slope stability. In this case study, emergency remediation was performed to prevent further hazard and to facilitate reconstruction, and counterweight fill and concrete filling of voids were successfully applied. For ultimate remediation, the grid anchor-blocks were used for slope stabilization, and additional rock bolts and grouting were applied inside the tunnel. Limit-equilibrium slope stability analysis and analyses of strereographic projections confirmed the instability of the original slope and the effectiveness of reinforcing methods. After the application of reinforcing measures, instrumental monitoring indicated that the slope and the tunnel remained stable. This case study is expected to serve as a valuable reference for similar engineering cases of large-sectional slope stability.

The area of investigation belongs to Okchon metamorphic zone and the fault fractured zone runs parallel to the tunnel direction. It causes the independent decline of tunnel face and the slackness of the tunnel surrounding base so, after all, the severe displacement has occurred within the tunnel. Accordingly, the TSP(Tunnel Seismic Prediction) survey has been performed to investigate the extent of fault fractured zone and to analize its characteristics. Also, we have analized the behavior causes by performing the tunnel face mapping and drilling investigation, and confirmed the position and scale of geological anomaly area and front fractured zone which influences tunnel excavation and supporting. Collected data analyzed ground layer condition through 3 dimensional modeling. Several variables included in the modeling were analyzed by geostastistics. The analysis of the modeling data shows that the belt of weathering by fault fractured zone is developing on the basis of the right side of tunnel and that is decreasing to the left side. The fault fractured zone was confirmed that it has strike, $N0\~5^{\circ}E$ dip NW, and it is consisted of large-scale fractured zone including several anomalies. The severe displacement in tunnel is probably caused by asymmetrical load that n generated by the crossing of discontinuity and the rock strength imbalance of tunnel's both side by fault fractured zone, and judge that need tunnel reinforcement method of grouting etc.
aThe elastic properties of the fault zone (width; 3~12m), the shattered zone (width; over 40m) and the fresh rock zone distributed under the core foundation of fill dam in granitic gneiss have widely different range. The deformation moduli of the fresh rock zone, the fault zone and the shattered zone obtained from in situ rock tests - Plate Load Test and Bore Hole Deformation Test - show a range of $42,000~168,000kg/\textrm{cm}^2,{\;}963~2,204kg/\textrm{cm}^2{\;}and{\;}1,238~2,098kg/\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. The differential settlements hetween the fault zone and the fresh rock zone are expected after the dam construction. Therefore, the displacement of foundation and concrete fill are evaluated using FEADAM 84 program of finite element analysis. The geometric distribution of discontinuifies obtained from the site mapping and drilling is considered in the finite element analysis. The analysis shows that the differential settlements between the fault zone and the fresh rock zone is about 6cm, while that of concrete fill is within 0.5cm.
