  • As the dependency to network system and demands of efficient storage systems rapidly grows in every networking filed, the current trends initiated by explosive networked data grow due to the wide-spread of internet multimedia data and internet requires a paradigm shift from computing-centric to data-centric in storagesystems. Furthermore, the new environment of file systems such as NAS(Network Attached Storage) and SAN(Storage Area Network) is adopted to the existing storage paradigm for Providing high availability and efficient data access. We describe the design issues and system components of SANiqueTM, which is the cluster file system based on SAN environment. SANiqueTM has the capability of transferring the user data from the network-attached SAN disk to client applications directly We, especially, present the protocol and functionality of the global buffer manager in our cluster file system.

  • We present a direct simulation technique for two-dimensional mold-filling simulations of fluids filled with a large number of circular disk-like rigid particles. It is a direct simulation in that the hydrodynamic interaction between particles and fluid is fully considered. We employ a pseudo-concentration method for the evolution of the flow front and the DLM (distributed Lagrangian multipliers)-like fictitious domain method for the implicit treatment of the hydrodynamic interaction. Both methods allow the use of a fixed regular discretization during the entire computation. The discontinuous Galerkin method has been used to solve the concentration evolution equation and the rigid-ring description has been introduced for freely suspended particles. A buffer zone, the gate region of a finite area subject to the uniform velocity profile, has been introduced to put discrete particles into the computational domain avoiding any artificial discontinuity. From example problems of 450 particles, we investigated the particle motion and effects of particles on the flow for both Newtonian and shear-thinning fluid media. We report the prolonged particle movement toward the wall in case of a shear-thinning fluid, which has been interpreted with the shear rate distribution.

  • We have investigated how the magneto-optical and recording properties of Pt/Co modulated films vary with sample preparation conditions : sputtering at various gas pressures, sputtering with Xe instead of Ar, and etching the buffer layers, etc. The magneto-optical characteristics of Pt/Co multilayers was comparable with those of currently prevailing rare-earth transition-metal alloys(Tb-Fe-Co amorphous films). On a disk of $12{\times}[Pt10.7\;{\AA}/Co2.8{\;}{\AA}]$ multilayer enhanced with 70nm silicon nitride, we have achieved a CNR of 36dB with a reading laser(${\lambda}\;=\;780nm$) power of 2.5-4.5mW for 720KHz carrier at 1.4m/s and the enhanced kerr rotation angle of $1.23^{\circ}$ at 780nm. It is suggested that Pt/Co modulated films clearly are very promising magneto-optical materials for a commercially use.

  • Intensive studies have been made in the area of VOD server Multimedia files in the VOD sever are characterized with the large volume of data, the requirements of synchronization and real-time playback of streams. The basic goal of the study is to find an efficient mechanism to allow maximum number of users under the limited resources such as Buffer size and disk bandwidth. we propose a efficient $pre\_fetching$ policy for multimedia services with dynamic monitoring and management of VOD sever resources. Simulation results show that the rate of buffer usage and service time of proposed scheme are about $28\%$ performance improved than that of traditional methods. This implies that our method can allow much more users for given resources.

  • R-trees are widely used in various areas such as geographical information systems, CAD systems and spatial databases in order to efficiently index multi-dimensional data. As data sets used in these areas grow in size and complexity, however, range query operations on R-tree are needed to be further faster to meet the area-specific constraints. To address this problem, there have been various research efforts to develop strategies for acceleration query processing on R-tree by using the buffer mechanism or parallelizing the query processing on R-tree through multiple disks and processors. As a part of the strategies, approaches which parallelize query processing on R-tree through Graphics Processor Units(GPUs) have been explored. The use of GPUs may guarantee improved performances resulting from faster calculations and reduced disk accesses but may cause additional overhead costs caused by high memory access latencies and low data exchange rate between GPUs and the CPU. In this paper, to address the overhead problems and to adapt GPUs efficiently, we propose a novel approach which uses a GPU as a buffer to parallelize query processing on R-tree. The use of buffer algorithm can give improved performance by reducing the number of disk access and maximizing coalesced memory access resulting in minimizing GPU memory access latencies. Through the extensive performance studies, we observed that the proposed approach achieved up to 5 times higher query performance than the original CPU-based R-trees.

  • [ $(Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5})_{0.99}Co_{x}Fe_{1-x}O_{3-{\delta}}$ ] [x=0.8, 0.2](BSCF) powders were synthesized by a Glycine-Nitrate Process (GNP) and the electrochemical performance of the BSCF cathode on a scandia stabilized zirconia, $[(Sc_{2}O_3)_{0.11}(ZrO_2)_{0.89}]-1Al_{2}O_3$ was investigated. In order to prevent unfavorable solid-state reactions between the cathode and zirconia electrolyte, a GDC ($Gd_{0.1}Ce_{0.9}O_{2-{delta}}$) buffer layer was applied on ScSZ. The BSCF (x = 0.8) cathode formed on GDC(Buffer)/ScSZ(Disk) showed poor electrochemical property, because the BSCF cathode layer peeled off after the heat-treatment. On the other hand, there were no delamination or peel off between the BSCF and GDC buffer layer, and the BSCF (x = 0.2) cathode exhibited fairly good electrochemical performances. It was considered that the observed phenomenon was associated with the thermal expansion mismatch between the cathode and buffer layer. The ohmic resistance of the double layer cathode was slightly lower than that of the single layer BSCF cathode due to the incorporation of platinum particle into the BSCF second layer.

  • Database sharing system (DSS) refers to a system for high performance transaction processing. In DSS, the processing nodes are locally coupled via a high speed network and share a common database at the disk level. Each node has a local memory, a separate copy of operating system, and a DB'\fS. To reduce the number of disk accesses, the node caches database pages in its local memory buffer. However, since multiple nodes may be simultaneously cached a page, cache consistency must be cnsured so that every node can always access the'latest version of pages. In this paper, we propose efficient cache consistency schemes in DSS, where the database is logically partitioned using primary copy authority to reduce locking overhead, The proposed schemes can improve performance by reducing the disk access overhead and the message overhead due to maintaining cache consistency, Furthermore, they can show good performance when database workloads are varied dynamically.

  • In this paper, we propose a system-level simulator for the performance analysis of a Solid-State Disk (SSD) in PC environment by using TLM (Transaction Level Modeling) method. Our method provides quantitative analysis for a variety of architectural choices of PC system as well as SSD. Also, it drastically reduces the analysis time compared to the conventional RTL (Register Transfer Level) modeling method. To show the effectiveness of the proposed simulator, we performed several explorations of PC architecture as well as SSD. More specifically, we measured the performance impact of the hit rate of a cache buffer which temporarily stores the data from PC. Also, we analyzed the performance variation of SSD for various NAND Flash memories which show different response time with our simulator. These experimental results show that our simulator can be effectively utilized for the architecture exploration of SSD as well as PC.

  • This paper proposes a prefetch-based disk buffer management algorithm, which we call W2R (Veighingjwaiting Room). Instead of using elaborate prefetching schemes to decide which blockto prefetch and when, we simply follow the LRU-OBL (One Block Lookahead) approach and prefetchthe logical next block along with the block that is being referenced. The basic difference is that theW2R algorithm logically partitions the buffer into two rooms, namely, the Weighing Room and theWaiting Room. The referenced, hence fetched block is placed in the Weighing Room, while theprefetched logical next block is placed in the Waiting Room. By so doing, we alleviate some inherentdeficiencies of blindly prefetching the logical next block of a referenced block. Specifically, a prefetchedblock that is never used may replace a possibly valuable block and a prefetched block, thoughreferenced in the future, may replace a block that is used earlier than itself. We show through tracedriven simulation that for the workloads and the environments considered the W2R algorithm improvesthe hit rate by a maximum of 23.19 percentage points compared to the 2Q algorithm and a maximumof 10,25 percentage feints compared to the LRU-OBL algorithm.

  • The paper proposes an efficient buffer management scheme to enhance performance of the disk I/O system. Without any user level information, the proposed scheme automatically detects the block reference patterns of applications by associating block attributes with forward distance of a block. Based on the detected patterns, the scheme applies an appropriate replacement policy to each application. We also present a new block allocation scheme to improve the performance of buffer cache when kernel needs to allocate a cache block due to a cache miss. The allocation scheme analyzes the cache hit ratio of each application based on block reference patterns and allocates a cache block to maximize cache hit ratios of system. These all procedures are performed on-line, as well as automatically at system level. We evaluate the scheme by trace-driven simulation. Experimental results show that our scheme leads to significant improvements in hit ratios of cache blocks compared to the traditional schemes and requires low overhead.
