Background: Inflammatory diseases can increase the prevalence of anemia. Recent studies confirmed that the prevalence of anemia is increased by atopic dermatitis (AD), a chronic inflammatory disease. Therefore, we aimed to elucidate the correlation between AD severity and prevalence of anemia. Methods: We used data of pediatric patients from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA-PPS-2016). We included pediatric patients (<18 years) with AD diagnosis who were prescribed medications for AD. We applied a propensity score method with inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) adjusting for differences in prevalence of confounders and performed IPTW logistic regression to evaluate associations between the anemia and severity of AD. Results: In total, 91,501 patients (mild AD: 47,054 patients; moderate-to-severe AD: 44,447 patients) <18 years who were prescribed drugs for AD were analyzed. Analysis of the probability of patients with mild AD and prevalence of anemia as a reference revealed an odds ratio (OR) of 1.159 (95% CI, 1.109-1.212; p<0.001) in moderate-to-severe AD patients, indicating a correlation between anemia prevalence and AD severity. Subgroup analysis according to gender, age group, and type of health insurance revealed there was an association between AD severity and anemia except in patients equal or older than 7 years. Conclusion: The prevalence of anemia increased with AD severity despite adjusting for confounding factors. Our results support the hypothesis that AD can cause anemia, and anemia prevalence could be increased in severe AD patients. Further studies are needed to establish a pathological basis.
Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence and lifestyle habits of cardiovascular disease (CVD) according to the type of disability in Korean adults compared to adults without disability. Methods: This study was secondary data analysis using the National Health check-up database from 2010 to 2013. Among the total 395,627 adults aged 30~80, the physically disabled (n=21,614) and the mentally disabled (n=1,448) who met the diagnosis criteria were extracted and compared with non-disabled (n=372,565) through 1:2 propensity score matching for nine characteristics. Results: Prior to matching, the prevalence of CVD was 34.4% in individuals without disabilities, accounting for 53.8% in those with physical disabilities and 22.4% in those with mental disabilities, showing significant differences between groups (p<.001). After matching, compared to the individuals without disability, those with physically disabled had significantly higher prevalence of CVD and the average number of CVD (p<.001). The prevalence of hypertension, diabetes, and vascular disease was significantly higher in the physically disabled (p<.05). Drinking was significantly higher in the non-disabled than in the physically and mentally disabled, and smoking was more in the non-disabled than in the mentally disabled. Physical activity was found to be significantly less in both the physically and mentally disabled than in the non-disabled (p<.01). Conclusion: It is necessary to confirm the differences in the prevalence of CVD risk factors and lifestyle according to the type of disability, suggesting the development and verification of health promotion programs including physical activity for CVD prevention in the disabled with CVD risk factors.
Bordetella (B.) bronchiseptica, Mycoplasma (M.) felis, and Chlamydia (C.) felis are considered as main bacterial pathogens of feline upper respiratory tract disease (URTD). In this study, a new triplex quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (tqPCR) assay was developed for the rapid and differential detection of these bacteria in a single reaction. The assay specifically amplified three bacterial genes with the detection limit of below 10 copies/reaction. The assay showed high repeatability and reproducibility, with coefficients of intra-assay and inter-assay variation of less than 1%. Based on the diagnostic results of the assay using 94 clinical samples obtained from cats with URTD signs, prevalence of B. bronchiseptica, M. felis, or C. felis was 10.6%, 36.2%, or 6.4%, respectively, indicating that the diagnostic sensitivity was comparable to those of previously reported monoplex qPCR assays. The dual infection rates for B. bronchiseptica and M. felis or M. felis and C. felis was 2.1% or 3.2%, respectively. These results indicated that M. felis has been widely spread, and its co-infection with B. bronchiseptica or M. felis has been frequently occurred in Korean cat population. The developed tqPCR assay will serve as a promising tool for etiological and epidemiological studies of these three bacterial pathogens and the prevalence data obtained in this study will contribute to expanding knowledge about the epidemiology of feline URTD in Korea.
The government neonatal screening program has a 17-years history. Therefore, it can now provide information on the prevalence of endocrine and metabolic diseases which included in neonatal screening. Knowledge of the prevalence of metabolic diseases is very important with these results, the most effective screening methods can be determined and diseases can be identified that should be added to neonatal screening. For these purposes regular follow-up of patients with metabolic diseases and quality assuarance are also needed.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to identify the relationship between metabolic syndrome and oral diseases in the middle aged and elderly in Korea. Methods: The study subjects were 6,390 people over 40 years old from 2010 and 2012 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The survey questionnaire consisted of health, nutrition, and oral examination surveys. The independent variables included general characteristics, health behavior, oral health behavior, and metabolic syndrome. The dependent variables included dental caries experience and periodontal disease. The oral examination was carried out by the dentist based on World Health Organization standard. Results: The average prevalence rate of metabolic syndrome MS was 23.79%, including 54.84% of risk group and 21.37% of normal group. The missing teeth rate was 82.38%, DMFT rate was 90.28% and the periodontal disease rate was 33.15%. Those having abnormal fasting blood glucose had 1.17 fold(95% CI: 1.00~1.37) higher periodontal disease than the normal group. The abnormal HDL cholesterol group had 1.25 times higher odds ratio(95% CI: 1.07~1.46) and the obese group had 1.27 times higher odds ratio(95% CI: 1.07~1.51). The risk group had 1.20 times higher odds ration(95% CI: 1.00~1.44) and that of the metabolic syndrome group was 1.60 times higher(95% CI: 1.29~1.97) in periodontal disease. The high blood pressure group had 1.25 times of missing teeth prevalence rate(95% CI: 1.00~1.37). The metabolic syndrome group had 1.47 times of missing teeth prevalence rate(95% CI: 1.11~1.94). Conclusions: The middle aged and elderly people in Korea had higher rate of metabolic syndrome and oral disease. It is necessary to implement the preventive oral health examination for the control of metabolic syndrome and oral diseases prevalence.
Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia duodenalis are the main diarrhea-causing parasitic pathogens; however, their prevalence in Korea is unknown. Here, we conducted a survey to determine the prevalence and genotype distribution of these 2 pathogens causing acute diarrhea in 8,571 patients hospitalized in 17 Regional Institute of Health Environment sites in Korea, during 2013-2016. C. parvum and G. duodenalis were detected and genotyped by nested PCR, and the isolate were molecularly characterized by sequencing the glycoprotein 60 (Gp60) and ${\beta}-giardin$ genes, respectively. The overall prevalence of C. parvum and G. duodenalis was 0.37% (n=32) and 0.55% (n=47), respectively, and both pathogens were more prevalent in children under 9 years old. Molecular epidemiological analysis showed that the C. parvum isolates belonged to the IIa family and were subtyped as IIaA13G2R1, IIaA14G2R1, IIaA15G2R1, and IIaA18G3R1. Analysis of the ${\beta}-giardin$ gene fragment from G. duodenalis showed that all positive strains belong to assemblage A. This is the first report on the molecular epidemiology and subtyping of C. parvum and G. duodenalis in such a large number of diarrheal patients in Korea. These results highlight the need for continuous monitoring of these zoonotic pathogens and provide a basis for implementing control and prevention strategies. Further, the results might be useful for epidemiological investigation of the source of outbreak.
Purpose : Cardiovascular disease is major factor of mortality in worldwide. Previous studies shown that the socioeconomic factors, nutrition factors, health behavior factors, biological factors and co-morbidity are increasing a prevalence of cardiovascular disease. Method : This study examined the risk factors for cardiovascular disease among adults aged 30 years and older using the data from the 2012 to 2014 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). The study participants were 7,555 Cardiovascular disease includes hypertension, stroke, angina pactoris, and myocardial infarction. Descriptive statistic and multivariates logistic regression were calculated. Result : The overall prevalence of cardiovascular disease was 31.16% in the participants. Cardiovascular disease was significantly associated with gender, age, income, education, marital status as socioeconomic factors in unadjusted model. After adjusting socioeconomic status variables, past smoker (OR 1.27, 95% CI 1.05-1.55), obesity (OR 7.14, 95% CI 4.21-12.11), skipping a meal (OR 2.79, 95% CI 2.46-3.16), HDL-C (OR 0.99, 95% CI 0.98-0.99) and WC (OR 1.06, 95% CI 1.05-1.07) were associated with cardiovascular disease. Conclusion : The results marked the importance of finding high risk groups and an early management of cardiovascular disease.
The present study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of PCV2 infection of the aborted pigs in Gyeongbuk province from April in 2004 to March in 2005. The prevalence of PCV1 and PCV2 infection was confirmed by the PCR method against 32 aborted pigs of 19 farms, which were requested of diagnosis of disease. Among 32 aborted pigs, abortions caused by PCVI were $7(21.9\%)$ heads and by PCV2 were $9(28.1\%)$ heads. Using PCR, the rate of PCV1 infection of 19 farms which were requested of diagnosis of disease is positive in $2(10.5\%)$ farms and $5(26.3\%)$ farms were positive in PCV2, and compositive infections of PCVI, PCV2 is $1(5.3\%)$ farms. Among 32 aborted the pigs, only PCV2 infection was one case $(3.1\%)$, compositive infections with abortion disease were 8 cases $(25\%)$, Compositive infections with abortion disease were most of the parvovirus infection $(84.2\%)$.
This study was carried out to investigate the epidemiological prevalence of diseases from birth to weaning in 66 dairy calves which were delivered from three stock farm in Chonbuk area. We examined body weight gain, incidence rate of diseases and population mortality rate in relation to age, season, environmental temperature and rearing management conditions for one year. The results of this experiment were as follows: Birth weight of dairy calves born of primiparae was lower than those of multiparae. But no significant difference in body weight gain was observable between dairy calves born of primiparae and those of multiparae. Body weight gain of diseased calves was lower than normal calves. Of 66 delivered calves, 34 calves(51.5%) were affected with gastronitestinal and/or respiratory diseases. The prevalence of the diseases were gastrointestinal disease(28.7%), respiratory disease(18.2%), and gastronitestinal and respiratory disease(4.6%). The gastronitestinal disease was occurred contrinually regardless of the season. Whereas all of the respiratory disease were occurred in winter and a change of season(December to April). 68.4% of the gastronitestinal disease, and all of the respiratory disease were occurred at atmospheric temperatures below 1$0^{\circ}C$. 89.5% of the gastronitestinal disease were occurred within 3 weeks old, whereas 50% of the respiratory disease were occurred intensively between 3 weeks and 4 weeks old. Of 66 delivered dairy claves, 2 calves were died(3%) with respriratory disease.
