  • In previous research, large companies were analyzed to focus on their past management performance and patent rights, but in this study we looked at the variability in future sales of small and medium-sized enterprises with patents through empirical analysis. We looked at how the quantitative and qualitative value of patent rights affect management performance of company. We used 'the number of patents' as the quantitative value of patents, 'the average score of patents' as the qualitative value of patents, and the average sales growth rate as the management performance of company. Through a discriminant analysis using the statistical program SPSS, both independent variables used in this study were significant for distinguishing between companies with an average growth in sales more than twice that of general small and medium-sized enterprises and those with less than twice the average sales growth rate. Therefore it is meaningful to provide stakeholders with an analysis framework on how sales will change in the future using the results of this study during guarantee or loan screening for small and medium-sized enterprises with patent rights.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the degrees of cellular phone usage among middle school students and to identify discriminating factors of addictive use of cellular phones among socio-demographic and psychological variables. Methods: From 123 middle schools in Busan, potential participants were identified through stratified random sampling and 747 middle school students participated in the study. The data was collected from December 1, 2004 to December 30, 2004. Descriptive and discriminant analyses were used. Results: Fifty seven percent of the participants were male and 89.7% used cellular phones at school. The participants were grouped into three groups depending on the levels of the cellular phone usage: addicted (n=117), dependent (n=418), non-addicted (n=212). Within the three groups, two functions were produced and only one function was significant, discriminating the addiction group from non-addiction group. Additional discriminant analysis with only two groups produced one function that classified 81.2% of the participants correctly into the two groups. Impulsiveness, anxiety, and stress were significant discriminating factors. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, developing intervention programs focusing on impulsiveness, anxiety and stress to reduce the possible addictive use of cellular phones is suggested.

  • This exploratory study examined the possibility that the notion, willing suspension of disbelief, can explain the processing of animated spokes-character in advertising. Willing suspension of disbelief has originated from Coleridge's explanation of poetic faith. And the term has been theoretically studied in the response of fiction in creative works, such as cinema, dramas, and advertisements, as well as literature. So far, willing suspension of disbelief has been proposed as a mediator of empathy, cognitive responses and affective responses to fiction. On these theoretical bases, a survey was conducted to 64 people with 3 advertisements to test the validity of the discriminant function. Findings of discriminant function analysis are as follows: First, the variable of willing suspension of disbelief well discriminated between the willing group and the non-willing group. Secondly, the Intensity of willing suspension of disbelief showed statistically significant difference between the willing group and the non-willing group. Thus, according to these results, it is proposed that the effects of the willing suspension of disbelief can be examined as a mediator of the response of fiction in further substantial studios.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effect of soaking in dairy products on the reduction of fishy odor in steamed crab meat using a mass spectrometer-based electronic nose. The steamed crab meat was soaked in three different dairy products (whole milk, soymilk, and yogurt) and the changes in the pattern of volatile components were analyzed by discriminant function analysis. The discriminant function first score (DF1) moved significantly from a negative position to a positive direction with an increase in soaking time. This suggested that the intensity of the fishy odor became weaker as soaking time increased. The effect of whole milk on the reduction of fishy odor was better than that of yogurt. The results of this study demonstrate that off-flavors can be reduced using dairy products.

  • The bounce rate is the rate at which a user leaves immediately after visiting, and this study aimed to find out what attributes of a website affect the bounce rate. Web site evaluation items were defined as a total of 4 items and 27 evaluation attributes, including usability, information, service interaction, and technology, so that they can be commonly applied to venture companies in various industries through prior research. As a result of the study, 6 website attributes that affect the bounce rate were verified to be significant by discriminant analysis and decision tree analysis. Suggestions to reduce the bounce rate of venture business websites through this study are as follows. First, the path name of the website is displayed as mandatory and a pull-down menu function is added to facilitate movement to other pages. Second, it is good to expose core content that can attract users' attention in the form of a banner, and place internal link banners in the right place on sub-pages. Third, external links should be linked to a new window so that they do not leave the current page immediately so that they can be re-entered. Lastly, it is recommended to expose the contact information of the person in charge and consultation function as direct information for communication with customers, but if individual response is difficult, at least the consultation function must be added. These suggestions are expected to be of practical help in various fields such as website development, operation, and marketing. However, in special cases, a high bounce rate may be normal, so it should be considered according to the situation.

  • The purposes of this study are 1) to explore the evaluating attribute of family life- insurance 2) to examine the relationship between evaluation attribute variables and level of consumer satisfaction/ dissatisfaction (CS/D), and 3) to investigate the sociodemographic variables and psychological variables which influence the purchase of life-insurance. The data used in this study include 432 households of 208 life-insurance purchasers and 224 non-purchasers Statistics used for the data analysis are x2, factor analysis, multiple regression and a discriminant analysis. The resulting major findings are as follows; 1) The evaluating attributes are saving function, convenience. economic payoff, safety for future accident, agreement of insurance, and reputation of brand. 2) Among these factors. the most important factors. in CS/D of life-insurance are saving function, and reputation of brand. 3) the purchase of life-insurance has been influenced by such sociodemographic variables as husband's age , family income, and family life-cycle. Psychological variables such as attitude of life, perceived risk, consumer attitude about insurance business did not influence the purchase of life -insurance significantly. As mentioned above, we can conclude that Korean purchasers of life-insurance are using irrational evaluating attributes. Therefore more education of the consumers and more information about life-insurance purchases are necessary. Especially low-income households and first step of family life-cycle families are turned out to need more education as well as more information.

  • The variation of needle, cone and seed characteristics and of allelic frequency in isoenzyme, ADH, ME and PGI, according to different resin duct index in Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii and their hybrids was analyzed. The results obtained were as follows : 1. With increase of number of resin ducts, morphological characteristics such as needle length, needle sheath length, cone size, seed size, seed wing size, 1000 seeds weight, etc. tended to he increased, while number of stomata row in needle to be decreased. 2. As the results of discriminant analysis for the morphological characteristics of needle, cone and seed, most individuals are generally coincided with number of resin duct mostly in Pinus densiflora were not. 3. According to the canonical discriminant function obtained from the morphological characteristics in Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii and their hybrids including introgressive hybrid, the resin duct index, 1000 seeds weight, cone size and neelde sheath length characterized fairly their species. 4. With increase of resin duct index, hybrid index tended to be higher. The results obtained from the discriminant analysis and the hybrid index were nearly same each other. 5. With increase of number of resin duct, the allelic frequencies for isoenzyme, ADH-$B_2$, ME-$A_2$ and PGI-$B_1$. $B_2$ tended to increase but those of ADH-$B_3$, ME-$A_4$, and PGI-$B_3$, to decrease. It is thought that this increase of frequency for the former four isoenzymes was resulted in introgressive gene flow from Pinus thunbergii to Pines densiflora and accordingly the frequency of latter three isoenzymes tended to decrease.

  • Objective: This study classified three different emotional states(boredom, pain, and surprise) using physiological signals. Background: Emotion recognition studies have tried to recognize human emotion by using physiological signals. It is important for emotion recognition to apply on human-computer interaction system for emotion detection. Method: 122 college students participated in this experiment. Three different emotional stimuli were presented to participants and physiological signals, i.e., EDA(Electrodermal Activity), SKT(Skin Temperature), PPG(Photoplethysmogram), and ECG (Electrocardiogram) were measured for 1 minute as baseline and for 1~1.5 minutes during emotional state. The obtained signals were analyzed for 30 seconds from the baseline and the emotional state and 27 features were extracted from these signals. Statistical analysis for emotion classification were done by DFA(discriminant function analysis) (SPSS 15.0) by using the difference values subtracting baseline values from the emotional state. Results: The result showed that physiological responses during emotional states were significantly differed as compared to during baseline. Also, an accuracy rate of emotion classification was 84.7%. Conclusion: Our study have identified that emotions were classified by various physiological signals. However, future study is needed to obtain additional signals from other modalities such as facial expression, face temperature, or voice to improve classification rate and to examine the stability and reliability of this result compare with accuracy of emotion classification using other algorithms. Application: This could help emotion recognition studies lead to better chance to recognize various human emotions by using physiological signals as well as is able to be applied on human-computer interaction system for emotion recognition. Also, it can be useful in developing an emotion theory, or profiling emotion-specific physiological responses as well as establishing the basis for emotion recognition system in human-computer interaction.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC)-VA3.0 in patients with hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA). The sample consisted of 301 patients who had received treatments at the physical therapy units of 5 medical institutions in Andong City in june 2006. Questionnaires on the WOMAC were recruited by 12 physical therapists. The internal structure and reliability of the scales were evaluated by means of item-internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient: ${\alpha}$), item-discriminant validity, and Pearson's relation coefficient. To explore construct validity, we conducted a principal component factor analysis with varimax rotation analysis. The criterion for factor extraction was an eigenvalue >1.0. The average age of the patients was 62.1 years. All WOMAC subscales (pain, stiffness, and physical function) were internally consistent with Cronbach's coefficients of .81, .91, and .80, respectively. The internal consistency reliability of item-each scale were also internally consistent with Cronbach's coefficient of .89 (Pearson's correlation coefficient: .71~.84), .93 (.89~.91), and .96 (.67~.91), respectively. However, high correlation was found among 3 items (.66~.83, .66~.67, and .67~.83), so the item-discriminant validity was low (${\alpha}$ coefficient: .81, .91, .80, respectively). The construct validity by factor analysis was low because it was not consistent With WOMAC-VA3.0. In conclusion, the results reported here confirm the reliability of the WOMAC in patients with OA of the hip and knee. The collection of information on the hip and knee osteoarthritis using this instrument was acceptable to patients. A further prospective multi-center study will be necessary to prove the construct validity.

  • 얼굴 인식에서 가장 많이 사용되고 있는 PCA(Principal Component Analysis)는 고차원의 얼굴 데이터를 낮은 차원으로 표현할 수 있다는 장점이 있다. LDA(Linear Discriminant Analysis)는 서로 다른 데이터를 잘 분리할 수 있으며, 얼굴 인식에서 우수한 성능을 보인다. 인식 모듈로는 pRBFNN(Polynomial Based Radial Basis Function Neural Networks) 모델을 구축하여 고차원 패턴인식 문제에 대한 해결책을 제시하고자 한다. 그리고 제안된 패턴분류기는 얼굴 데이터를 사용하여 성능을 확인한다.
