Reconstruction of Discourse on Curriculum Reconstruction (4차 산업혁명 시대를 대비한 교육과정재구성 담론의 재구성)

  • The purpose of this paper is to reveal the limitation of previous studies on curriculum re-construction and to suggest an alternative for curriculum re-construction. Through the literature review, this paper finds that previous studies quiet over the direction about selecting as well as organizing contents. In order to overcome the weaknesses of previous studies, this paper embraces the interest of learner for establishing the direction of curriculum reconstruction. To be more specific, this study shows that how can the ideas of growth, habit, and interest of John Dewey connect to contents-selecting and organizing in the process of instruction. As a result, this paper helps curriculum discourses to make progress for various direction and helps teachers to reconstruct the contents based on interests of their students.

The Aspects of Small Group Decision-making Process based on Reading News Reports: Focused on Climate Change related Socio-scientific Issues Activity (신문기사 읽기를 활용한 소집단 의사결정 과정 양상 -기후변화 관련 사회적 논쟁 활동을 중심으로-)

  • The research objective of this study is to analyze the aspects of small group decision-making process based on reading news reports in the context of the socio-scientific issues (SSI) activity related to climate change. Twenty-two high school students from Gyeonggi Province, South Korea, were asked to read two news reports on the UN climate change conferences and take a stance on joining the Paris Agreement both as an individual and as a small group. The news reports were analyzed in terms of genre, discourse, and style adapting the critical discourse analysis (CDA) and the decision-making processes of the small groups were examined on recognizing a problem and evaluating alternatives and decisions. The results from analyzing the news reports denoted that the Paris agreement is not only related to finding ideal solutions to climate change, but rather, connected to political or economic interests and power relationship. In the stage of recognizing a problem, meanwhile, different frames which students recognize the Paris agreement and discourses in the foreground of the news reports were the critical causes in terms of identifying the problem. In the stage of evaluating alternatives and decisions, the equity and fairness were the criteria for the small group discussions. This study implies the necessity of the scientific literacy instruction to develop the ability to critical reading in the context of the SSI.

Preliminary Research about Semantic Relations and Linguistic Features in Middle School Students' Writings about Phase Transitions of Water in Air (대기 중 물의 상태변화에 관한 중학생의 글에서 나타나는 의미관계 및 과학 언어적 특성에 관한 예비연구)

  • Recently, scientific literacy means not only the acquisition of scientific knowledge but also the linguistic ability to participate in a scientific discourse community. Keeping this in mind, this study investigated middle school students' writings about phase transitions of water in air. Sixty seven students at 9th grade (age 15) students participated in this study and wrote two individual short texts. The result of text analysis can be summarized as follows: (1) students had problems with familiar scientific terms such as 'water vapor' and 'steam' as well as unfamiliar ones like 'dew point'. (2) Students described right semantic relations and at the same time wrong ones more in the idea formed from everyday experience than those from school instruction. (3) While students showed action and process centered writing in text about everyday phenomenon, they showed more preference for technical words and nouns in text about school science. This study suggest that students could develop linguistic ability of science from both spontaneous process based on experience and formal and theoretical learning; the former in forming various semantic relations, the latter in technical and abstract aspect of scientific writing.
