Three species of Gastrostyla ciliates collected from the sewage treatment plant and a puddle in the valley from Korea were identified as Gastrostyla minima Hemberger, 1985, G. steinii Engelmann, 1862 and G. setifera (Engelmann, 1862). The description was based on the observation of living specimens, protargol impregnated specimens and biometric analysis. The morphological variations among the populations of these species were investigated with morphometry. These species have not been reported in Korea and their diagnostic characteristics are as follows: G. minima normally has two oval macronuclei (Ma) with one spherical micronucleus (Mi) respectively, continuous ventral cirral row (VCR) with additional one postoral ventral cirrus (poVC), five transverse cirri (TC), six dorsal kineties (DK) with broken 4th kinety, and cortical granules. G. steinii has four oval Ma with three to five Mi, discontinuous VCR with additional one poVC, four TCs, six DKs, and no cortical granules. G. setifera has two oval Ma with one spherical Mi respectively, five TCs which distinctly separate in two groups, six DKs, discontinuous VCR with additional two poVCs, and no cortical granules.

In this paper, authors propose a step-up converter of pulse width modulation (PWM) and power factor correction (PFC) by using a novel loss-less snubber. The proposed converter for a discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) eliminates the complicated circuit control requirement and reduces the size of components. The input current waveform in the proposed converter is got to be a sinusoidal form of discontinuous pulse in proportion to magnitude of ac input voltage under the constant duty cycle switching. Thereupon, the input power factor is nearly unity and the control method is simple. In the general DCM converters, the switching devices are fumed-on with the zero current switching (ZCS), and the switching devices must be switched-off at a maximum reactor current. To achieve a soft switching (ZCS and ZVS) of the switching turn-off, the proposed converter is constructed by using a new loss-less snubber which is operated with a partial resonant circuit. The result is that the switching loss is very low and the efficiency of converter is high. Some simulative results on computer and experimental results are included to confirm the validity of the analytical results.
Procedures to separate motile. normal & motile and acrosome-reacted sperm with high efficiency have clinical application in Assisted Reproductive Technology in terms of increasing the probability of fertilization by a normal sperm and subsequent normal embryonic development. This study evaluated the effects of 10 sperm preparation techniques [Swim-up from a washed pellet (SU). Swim-up from semen (SO). Continuous Percoll Gradients I (PIC). Discontinuous Percoll Gradients I (PID). Continuous Percoll Gradients II(P II C). Discontinuous Percoll Gradients II(P II D), SpermPrep (SFC). Wang's tube (WT). Albumin Gradients (AG), Low temperature capacitation (LTC)] on motility (%), normal morphology (%), motile sperm recovery rate(%). morphologically normal & motile sperm recovery rate (%), true acrosome reaction (%) and fertilizing ability. A P II D proved to be an effective means of separating morphologically normal & motile sperm. Our results indicated the P II D has advantages as compared with other methods in terms of recovery rate. enhancement of motility and normal morphology. And a LTC seems to be an effective means of enhancing the true acrosome reaction and fertilizing ability. These results suggest that the combined method of LTC and P II D for separation of morphologically normal & motile sperm and acrosome reacted sperm may be a useful procedure for intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization in the management of male factor infertility as well as for isolation of subpopulation of sperm for basic research.

This paper presents a high efficiency, PSM/DCM/CCM triple mode boost DC-DC converter for mobile application. This device operates at Pulse-Skipping Mode(PSM) when it enters light load, and otherwise operate the operating frequency of 1.4MHz with Pulse-Width Modulation(PWM) mode. Especially in order to improve the efficiency during the Discontinuous-Conduction Mode(DCM) operation period, the reverse current prevention circuit and oscillations caused by the inductor and the parasitic capacitor to prevent the Ringing killer circuit is added. The input voltage of the boost converter ranges from 2.5V ~ 4.2V and it generates the output of 4.8V. The measurement results show that the boost converter provides a peak efficiency of 92% on CCM and 87% on DCM. And an efficiency-improving PWM operation raises the efficiency drop because of transition from PWM to PFM. The converter has been fabricated with a 0.18um Dongbu BCDMOS technology.
From northeast to southwest, discontinuous sand ridges distribute on the western continental shelf of Korean Peninsular. The dimension of sand ridges is 3 to 21 m high, 3.1 to 6.8 km wavelength and 9-64 km long with 0.5 steep slope. they are probably originated and reformed by the intensity of tidal current according to the sea level rise. The characteristics of sand ridges revealed in study area are summarized as follows: (1) The sand ridges line up with the long axes of the tidal current ellipses, indicating a tidal control. (2) these are composed of two sedimentary sequences on the 3.5 kHz seismic profiles and core sediments. The upper sequence characterized by prolonged type is covered with thin veneer of massive fine sand(Mz, 2-3$\phi$) with Olive Gray(5Y 5/2). The lower sequence is characterized by internal reflector type with parallel and discontinuous. It consists of sandy mud or muddy sand(Mz, 5-7$\phi$) with laminar structures. the parallel internal reflectors are truncated on the slope of sand ridges. (3) Asymmetrical sand waves are superimposed on the sand ridges, and facing to the crest. However, symmetrical sand waves lie on the crest. Sand ridges having characteristics above is originated by scouring of tidal current, covered with coarase relict sediments, and modified by sadware.

In a number of predictive video compression standards, the motion is compensated by the block-based motion compensation (BMC). The effective motion field used for the prediction by the BMC is obviously discontinuous since one motion vector is used for the entire macro-block. The usage of discontinuous motion field for the prediction causes the blocky artifacts and one obvious approach for eliminating such artifacts is to use a smoothed motion field. The optimal procedure will depend on the type of motion within the video. In this paper, several procedures for the motion vectors are considered. For any interpolation or approaches, however, the motion vectors as provided by the block matching algorithm(BMA) are no longer optimal. The optimum motion vectors(still one per macro-block) must minimize the of the displaced frame difference (DFD). We propose a unified algorithm that computes the optimum motion vectors to minimize the of the DFD using a conjugate gradient search. The proposed algorithm has been implemented and tested for the affine transformation based motion compensation (ATMC), the bilinear transformation based motion compensation (BTMC) and our own filtered motion compensation(FMC). The performance of these different approaches will be compared against the BMC.

Intelligent Motion Planning System(IMPS) is presented for a robot to achieve an efficient path toward the given target point in two dimensional unknown environment is constructed with unrestricted obstacle shapes. IMPS consists of three components for making intelligent motion. These components are real-time motion planning algorithm based on a discontinous boundary method, fuzzy neural network decision system for heuristic knowledge representation, and world modeling with forgetting and reinforcing memory cells. First of all, in real-time motion planning algorithm, the behavior-based architectural method is used to generate subgoal. A behavior generates a subgoal independently by using the method of discontinuous boundary in sensed area. The discontinuous boundary method is a new proposed fast obstacle avoidance algorithm. The second component is fuzzy neural network decision system for accomplishing the subgoal. The heuristic rules are imbedded on the fuzzy neural network to make an intelligent decision. The last one is a forgetting, reinforcing memory technique for the construction of external world map. The activation values of all activated memory cells in grid space are decreased monotonically and after all they are burned out. Therefore, after sufficient journey, robot can have a stationary world map even if the dynaic obstacles exist. Using the IMPS, several simulations show the efficient achievement of target point in unknown enviroment with obstcles of various shapes.
The host rock of standing sculptured Buddha in the Yongamsa temple was macular biotite granite, which has gone through mechanical and chemical weathering. The principal rock-forming minerals are quartz, plagioclase, alkali feldspar, and biotite, the last two of which have been transformed into clay minerals and chlorite due to weathering processes. The bed rock around the Buddha statue is busily scattered with steep inclinations that are almost vertical and discontinuous planes with the strikes of $N8^{\circ}E$. The major joints have the strikes of N4 to $52^{\circ}W$ and N6 to $88^{\circ}E$ and the dips of 42 to $89^{\circ}$. Especially thee development of the joints that cross the major joints causes tile structural instability of the rock. The host rock of the Buddha image is separated into many different rock masses because of the also many different discontinuity, which group accounts for about $12{\%}$ of the rock. Thus it's estimated that the bed rock has not only plane and toppling failure but also wedge failure in all the sides. Since the earth pressure and the inclination pressure are imposed on the body of the Buddha in the basement rock, it's urgent to give a treatment of geotechnical engineering for the sake of its structural stability. The parts where serious fractures are seen should receive the hardening process using the fillers for stones. It's also necessary to introduce a landfill liner system in order to reduce the ground humidity. The rock surface of the Buddha statue are partly contaminated by lichens and bryophyte. The joints have turned into earth, which promotes the growth of weeds and plant roots. Thus biochemical treatments should also be considered to get rid of the vegetation along the discontinuous planes and prevent further biological damages.

Background: Panax ginseng cannot be cultivated on the same land consecutively for an extended period, and the underlying mechanism regarding microorganisms is still being explored. Methods: Polymerase chain reaction and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) and BIO-LOG methods were used to evaluate the microbial genetic and functional diversity associated with the P. ginseng rhizosphere soil in various cultivation ages and modes. Results: The analysis of microbial diversity using PCR-DGGE showed that microbial communities were significantly variable in composition, of which six bacterial phyla and seven fungal classes were detected in P. ginseng soil. Among them, Proteobacteria and Hypocreales dominated. Fusarium oxysporum, a soilborne pathogen, was found in all P. ginseng soil samples except R0. The results from functional diversity suggested that the microbial metabolic diversity of fallow soil abandoned in 2003was the maximum and transplanted soil was higher than direct-seeding soil and the forest soil uncultivated P. ginseng, whereas the increase in cultivation ages in the same mode led to decreases in microbial diversity in P. ginseng soil. Carbohydrates, amino acids, and polymers were the main carbon sources utilized. Furthermore, the microbial diversity index and multivariate comparisons indicated that the augmentation of P. ginseng cultivation ages resulted in decreased bacterial diversity and increased fungal diversity, whereas microbial diversity was improved strikingly in transplanted soil and fallow soil abandoned for at least one decade. Conclusion: The key factors for discontinuous P. ginseng cultivation were the lack of balance in rhizosphere microbial communities and the outbreak of soilborne diseases caused by the accumulation of its root exudates.
A powerful numerical method that can be used for modeling rock-structure interaction is the Discontinuous Deformation Analysis (D D A) method developed by Shi in 1988. In this method, rock masses are treated as systems of finite and deformable blocks. Large rock mass deformations and block movements are allowed. Although various extensions of the D D A method have been proposed in the literature, the method is not capable of modeling water-block interaction, sequential loading or unloading and rock reinforcement; three features that are needed when modeling surface or underground excavation in fractured rock. This paper presents three new extensions to the D D A method. The extensions consist of hydro-mechanical coupling between rock blocks and steady water flow in fractures, sequential loading or unloading, and rock reinforcement by rockbolts, shotcrete or concrete lining. Examples of application of the D D A method with the new extensions are presented. Simulations of the underground excavation of the \ulcornerUnju Tunnel\ulcorner in Korea were carried out to evaluate the influence of fracture flow, excavation sequence and reinforcement on the tunnel stability. The results of the present study indicate that fracture flow and improper selection of excavation sequence could have a destabilizing effect on the tunnel stability. On the other hand, reinforcement by rockbolts and shotcrete can stabilize the tunnel. It is found that, in general, the D D A program with the three new extensions can now be used as a practical tool in the design of underground structures. In particular, phases of construction (excavation, reinforcement) can now be simulated more realistically.
